Reproductive performance of dairy cows fed two concentrations of phosphorus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary P concentrations of 0.37 (recommended) or 0.57% (excess; dry matter basis) on reproductive performance. At calving, Holstein cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments (n = 134 for 0.37% P and n = 133 for 0.57% P). Cows were fitted with a radiotelemetric transmitter (50 d in milk [DIM]) to record mounting activity during estrus and bred to natural estrus from 50 to 100 DIM, then to synchronized estrus (Ovsynch protocol) after 100 DIM. Weekly ultrasonography was performed from 50 DIM until pregnancy was diagnosed (-30 d after artificial insemination). Pregnancy was confirmed approximately 60 d after artificial insemination (artificial insemination). Weekly blood samples were analyzed for progesterone concentrations. Days to first increase (>1 ng/ml) in progesterone, days to first estrus detected by radiotelemetry, days to first service detected by herd personnel, and conception rate at first service did not differ between the recommended and excess P groups, respectively. Similarly, conception rate at 30 d, days open, pregnancies lost from 30 to 60 d, multiple ovulation rate, and the incidence of anovulatory condition at 71 DIM did not differ between these groups. The mean duration of estrus was 8.7 +/- 0.5 and 8.7 +/- 0.7 h, and the average number of mounts per estrus was 7.4 +/- 0.5 and 7.8 +/- 0.5 for a total mounting time during estrus of 25.8 +/- 1.8 and 24.5 +/- 1.6 s for cows fed the recommended and excess P diet, respectively. Phosphorus treatment had no detectable effect on reproductive performance.  相似文献

Health and reproductive performance were observed in a lactational study involving 188 d of treatment with bovine somatotropin. Treatments commenced 84 +/- 10 d postpartum and consisted of 27 mg/d of pituitary somatotropin and 0, 13.5, 27, and 40.5 mg/d of recombinantly derived somatotropin (six cows per treatment group). Cows were high yielding (greater than 9600 kg/305 d), and somatotropin increased milk yield by 16 to 41% depending on source and dose. Somatotropin had no discernible effect on mammary health based on somatic cell count and incidence of clinical mastitis. Cows receiving somatotropin averaged 96% conception rate, 2.0 services per conception, and 116 d open, which were comparable to controls. No subclinical or clinical evidence of ketosis or milk fever was observed. Thirty-two blood chemistry and physical examination variables were examined at several intervals during the study and no adverse treatment effects of physiologic importance for any of the variables were observed. Somatotropin treatment had no discernible effect on gestation length or birth weight and growth rate (first 28 d) of calves. Milk yields for the first 60 d postpartum were compared for the period just prior to start of treatment and the lactation subsequent to treatment; no treatment effects were observed. Overall, our results for a well-managed herd demonstrate somatotropin treatment did not cause any serious health effects. However, examination of subtle health effects will require large numbers of animals treated under a range of environmental and management conditions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the association between different dry period lengths and somatic cell counts, milk yield, reproductive performance, and risk of early culling during the subsequent lactation of Chilean dairy cows. The length of the dry period was classified into 5 categories: 0 to 30 d, 31 to 52 d, 53 to 76 d, 77 to 142 d, and 143 to 250 d. Generalized mixed models were used and included herd as random effect. Time-to-event analyses were performed for evaluation of reproductive performance and culling risk. The odds of subclinical mastitis (log linear score, LNSCC ≥ 4.5) during early lactation increased with extended dry periods (143 to 250 d) during first, second, and third test day compared with the reference dry period of 53 to 76 d [odds ratio (OR) = 1.27, 1.16, and 1.31, respectively]. Short (0 to 30 d) and extended dry periods had a detrimental effect on early lactation and 305-d milk yield compared with the reference dry period. Longer dry periods were associated with increased number of days for calving-to-first service interval and calving to conception interval. Average calving-to-first service interval for short and extended dry period were 83 d and 89.4 d, respectively. Average days to conception were 127.8 d and 131.4 d for a dry period of 31 to 52 d and extended dry period, respectively. Similarly, the number of services per conception increased with length of previous dry period from 1.62 (31 to 52 d) to 2.44 (143 to 250 d). Cows with previous short and extended dry period had higher odds of culling when compared with cows in the reference group (OR = 2.20 and 1.57, respectively). Compared with the reference group, cows in the dry period category 77 to 142 d had the highest odds of death followed by the category 143 to 250 d (OR = 1.27 and 1.18, respectively). When death and live culling were combined, the highest odds of combined death and culling were for cows in the categories 0 to 30 d and 143 to 250 d (OR = 1.63 and 1.44, respectively). We conclude that extended dry periods (143 to 250 d) increase the odds of subclinical mastitis occurrence during early lactation and have a negative association with reproductive performance. Short and extended dry periods were negatively associated with early lactation and 305-d milk yield and were related to increased overall culling when compared with the reference dry period.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to quantitatively characterize the effects of mastitis on the reproductive performance of dairy cows as well as to identify factors that interact with this relationship. A total of 29 publications were identified that contributed 24, 41, 27, 38, and 13 trial results to the meta-analysis of how mastitis is related to time to first service (TFS), days open (DO), services per conception (SPC), pregnancies per insemination at first service (FSP/AI) and pregnancy loss (PL), respectively. The meta-analyses were conducted using multilevel linear mixed-effects models. Overall, high levels of heterogeneity were present and meta-regression models only explained a small amount of heterogeneity. Results suggest that cows with mastitis pre-first insemination experience, on average, an additional 13.29 d to first service [95% confidence interval (CI): 6.64, 19.95] when compared with cows with no mastitis in the same time period. Moreover, in relation to cows with no mastitis in the same time period, 22.34 additional DO (95% CI: 12.89, 31.79) were estimated, on average, for cows with clinical mastitis at pre-insemination leading to conception. Additionally, 32.41 added DO (95% CI: 20.58, 44.25) were estimated, on average, for cows with clinical mastitis at pre- or post-insemination leading to conception compared with cows with no mastitis in the same time period. Finally, 20.03 additional DO (95% CI: 3.11, 36.95) were estimated, on average, for cows with subclinical mastitis pre- or post-insemination leading to conception compared with cows with no mastitis in the same time period. Effect size estimates from the meta-regression models for SPC, in relation to cows with no mastitis in the same time period, suggest that, on average, SPC increases by 0.46 inseminations (95% CI: 0.30, 0.62) for a cow experiencing mastitis pre-insemination leading to conception. When mastitis occurs either pre- or post-insemination leading to conception, SPC is expected to increase, on average, by 0.72 inseminations (95% CI: 0.48, 0.95) compared with cows with no mastitis in the same time period. The estimated effect sizes for FSP/AI suggest a risk ratio of conceiving at first insemination of 0.90 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.99) for cows with mastitis diagnosed pre-first insemination with respect to cows with no mastitis in the same time period, and a risk ratio of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.86) for cows diagnosed with mastitis either pre- or post-first insemination with respect to cows with no mastitis in the same time period. Publication bias was identified in 4 of the meta-analysis models (TFS, DO, SPC, and FSCR), but no influential trials were identified in any models; the reliability of the meta-analysis results should be interpreted carefully keeping these limitations in mind. Further meta-regression analysis would be valuable as additional studies are published that report other potential sources of heterogeneity.  相似文献

Trends in average days open and services per conception from 1976 to 1999 were examined in 532 Holstein and 29 Jersey herds from 10 Southeastern states. Three-year averages for eight intervals (time) were calculated (first: 1976 to 1978; eighth: 1997 to 1999). Milk, fat, fat-corrected milk, and number of cows increased across time. Herds of both breeds had linear, quadratic, and cubic effects of time on days open and services per conception. For 1976 to 1978, respective averages of days open and services per conception were 122 +/- 2.8 d and 1.91 +/- 0.08 for Jerseys, 124 +/- 0.7 d and 1.91 +/- 0.02 for Holsteins. Days open increased nonlinearly to 152 +/- 2.8 d for Jerseys and 168 +/- 0.7 d for Holsteins by 1997 to 1999, resulting in a breed x time interaction. Services per conception also increased nonlinearly, reaching 2.94 +/- 0.04 services for both breeds in 1994 to 1996, changing only slightly after 1996. Fat-corrected milk and number of cows had small but significant effects. Five subregions (one to three states) differed in mean days open and services per conception, but changes in those measures across time among subregions were similar. Days to first service increased by 16 (Holsteins) and 18 d (Jerseys) during the last five 3-yr periods, associated with increasing days open. Estrus detection rates generally declined from 1985 to 1999, associated inversely with services per conception. Reduced reproductive performance in Southeastern dairy herds is of concern. Multiple strategies are needed to attenuate further declines.  相似文献

The objectives were to evaluate the effect of high linear somatic cell counts (LNSCC ≥4.5) during early lactation on reproductive performance and to estimate their association with the risk of abortion in a population of central-southern Chilean dairy cattle. The analysis included records from a population of 157 farms and considered 1,127,405 test-day records including 101,944 lactations that began between 1997 and 2006. After data edits, the analyses of calving to first service and calving to conception intervals consisted of 88,633 and 70,877 lactations, respectively. Once controlling for significant variables, time to first breeding was 21.8 d longer in cows with at least 1 high LNSCC before the first breeding compared with controls. Cows with at least 1 high LNSCC before the fertile breeding had an increment in time to conception of 48.7 d and required, on average, 0.49 more services to conceive. The odds of conception at first service in cows with a high LNSCC within 30 d before [after] breeding were 0.85 (0.81 to 0.89; 95% confidence interval) [0.82 (0.78 to 0.87; 95% confidence interval)] times the odds of conception for cows without a high LNSCC during that period. The Cox proportional hazard model indicated that after correction by calving year, lactation number, and milk yield standardized to 305 d, the risk of pregnancy decreased by 44% if a high LNSCC occurred before breeding. Cows registering a high LNSCC during the first 90 d of gestation had an increased risk of abortion, being 1.22 (1.07 to 1.35; 95% confidence interval) times more likely to abort than nonaffected cows. It is concluded that subclinical mastitis, measured as LNSCC ≥4.5, had a significant effect on reproductive performance in Chilean dairy cattle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the association between clinical mastitis and abortion during early gestation in lactating dairy cows. During the study period, there were 2087 cows diagnosed pregnant, 60 cases of clinical mastitis, and 127 cases of abortion. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between the occurrence of mastitis and subsequent abortion. This study found that cows that had clinical mastitis during the first 45 d of gestation were at 2.7 (95% confidence interval = 1.3 to 5.6) times higher risk of abortion within the next 90 d than were cows without mastitis. Cows with a calving to conception interval > 174 d were at lower risk (43%) of abortion compared with cows with a calving to conception interval < 79 d (odds ratio = 0.6; 95% confidence interval = 0.3 to 0.9). Conception on a breeding detected by secondary signs of estrus was also significantly associated with increased risk of abortion (odds ratio = 1.7; 95% confidence interval = 1.1 to 2.8). No significant association was found between parity, breeding season, or milk production or use of prostaglandin F2 to induce successful estrus and subsequent abortion.  相似文献

The main objective of the study reported here was to examine the association between pregnancy loss (PL) and previous exposure to clinical or subclinical mastitis before breeding or during gestation in primiparous Holstein cows. A secondary objective was to estimate the cost of clinical mastitis during gestation, including that of PL attributable to mastitis in study cows. A total of 687 primiparous Holstein cows from 1 dairy farm were included in a matched case-control study. Study cows were declared pregnant via ultrasound on d 33 after timed artificial insemination (TAI). Case cows (n = 78) were those diagnosed as nonpregnant by rectal palpation on d 47 or 75 after TAI. Control cows were those confirmed as pregnant by rectal palpation on d 47 and 75 after TAI. Case cows were matched with eligible controls according to year of calving and calving-to-conception interval ±3 d. Cows were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: (1) cows not affected with clinical or subclinical mastitis; (2) cows affected with subclinical mastitis (Dairy Herd Improvement Association somatic cell score >4.5); and (3) cows affected with clinical mastitis during 2 exposure periods, 1 to 42 d before breeding or during gestation (1 to PL diagnosis day for case cows, and 1 to 75 d for control cows). Conditional logistic regression was used to model the odds of PL as a function of previous exposure to mastitis in study cows. Mastitis before breeding was not associated with PL. The odds of PL were 2.21 times greater in cows affected with clinical mastitis during gestation (95% confidence interval = 1.01, 4.83), compared with cows without mastitis, after controlling for breeding type and lameness. The cost of clinical mastitis during gestation was $149, which includes the cost ($27) of PL attributable to mastitis. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that clinical mastitis during gestation can cause PL in primiparous dairy cows leading to economic losses.  相似文献

Lactating dairy cows (n = 228) in a semiseasonal, grazing-based dairy were subjected to artificial insemination (AI) to start the 23-d breeding season (d 0 to 22) followed by natural service (d 23 to 120). Cows were randomly assigned to: 1) Ovsynch (GnRH, d -10; PGF2,, d -3; GnRH, d -1; timed AI, d 0) followed by AI at estrus (tail paint removal) on d 1 to 22 (Ovsynch; n = 114); or 2) AI at estrus (tail paint removal) throughout 23 d of AI breeding (tail paint; n = 114). Days to first AI service were greater and the 23-d AI service rate was less for tail paint vs. Ovsynch cows (12.0 +/- 0.6 d vs. 0 d; and 84.2 vs. 100%, respectively). However, conception to first AI was greater for tail paint vs. Ovsynch cows (47.3 vs. 27.3%, respectively). Cows in the tail paint group received only one AI, during 23 d of AI, but 46.4% of Ovsynch cows received a second AI, with similar conception (43.1%) to that of tail paint cows at first AI (47.3%). Based on serum progesterone, incomplete luteal regression after PGF2alpha, and poor ovulatory responses to GnRH contributed to lower conception to timed AI in the Ovsynch group. Cumulative pregnancy rates for tail paint and Ovsynch cows did not differ after 23 d of AI breeding (47.3 vs. 46.3%, respectively) nor after 120 d of AI/ natural service breeding (80.5 vs. 83.3%, respectively). Lactating cows in this grazing-based dairy synchronized poorly to Ovsynch resulting in reduced conception to timed AI compared with AI after tail paint removal.  相似文献

The objectives were to (1) compare blood metabolites and reproductive outcomes in lactating dairy cows not inseminated before (early) and after (late) 100 d in milk (DIM) because of prolonged anovulation or anestrus; and (2) evaluate reproductive responses of cows ≤100 DIM to GnRH + PGF treatments after a fixed-time artificial insemination (AI; Ovsynch) or after induced estrus (Select Synch). In blood samples collected before initiating hormone-based breeding programs, anovular cows ≤100 DIM had the greatest serum total protein and globulin concentrations and the lowest tri-iodothyronine concentrations. Anovular and ovular cows >100 DIM had the greatest serum urea concentrations. Ovaries in cows (n = 40) >100 DIM were examined by transrectal ultrasonography, and those without a detectable corpus luteum (CL; anovular) were given GnRH and then PGF 7 d later (Select Synch), whereas cows with a CL (ovular) were given 2 PGF injections 12 d apart. Cows were inseminated at observed estrus after the second or only PGF injection. More ovular (79%; 15/19) than anovular cows (24%; 5/21) were detected in estrus. No differences were detected between ovular and anovular cows in DIM at first AI, conception rate to first AI, cumulative pregnancy rates, number of services per conception, or days open. Cows (n = 93) ≤100 DIM were assigned randomly to 3 treatments: (1) control (n = 20) AI at estrus; (2) GnRH and then PGF on 7 d (Select Synch; n = 42) and monitored for signs of estrus for 5 d and AI accordingly; or (3) 2 GnRH injections 9 d apart with PGF given 48 h before second GnRH injection and AI at 16 h after the second GnRH injection (Ovsynch; n = 31). Among cows ≤100 DIM, controls had more days to first service (149 ± 16 d) than Select Synch cows (117 ± 7 d). Ovsynch cows had the fewest days to first service (84 ± 10 d) compared with control (149 ± 16 d) and Select Synch (117 ± 7 d) cows. Conception rates in control (25%) and Select Synch (26.2%) cows did not differ from those in Ovsynch cows (29%). Ovsynch cows had greater cumulative pregnancy rates and fewer days open than control (161 ± 20 vs. 258 ± 29 d), but did not differ from Select Synch (233 ± 19 d). Timed AI produced comparable fertility and superior cumulative pregnancy rates, fewer days to first service, and fewer days open than AI at observed estrus in cows inseminated ≤100 DIM.  相似文献

A controlled field study examined conception rates after 2 timed artificial insemination (TAI) breeding protocols conducted on 2 commercial dairy farms. Estrous cycles in postpartum lactating cows were presynchronized with 2 injections of PGF(2alpha) given 14 d apart (Pre-synch) and then, after 12 d, the standard Ovsynch protocol (injection of GnRH 7 d before and 48 h after an injection of PGF(2alpha), with one TAI at 12 to 16 h after the second GnRH injection) or Heatsynch protocol [injection of GnRH 7 d before an injection of PGF(2alpha), followed 24 h later by 1 mg of estradiol cypionate (ECP) and one TAI 48 h after ECP] was applied. Experimental design allowed artificial insemination to occur anytime after the second Presynch injection and during the designed breeding week when estrus was detected. Of the 1846 first services performed, only 1503 (rate of compliance = 81.4%) were performed according to protocol. Numbers of cows inseminated, logistic-regression adjusted conception rates, and days in milk (DIM) were for inseminations made: 1) during 14 d after first Presynch injection (n = 145; 22.6%; 54 +/- 0.4 DIM); 2) during 12 d after second Presynch injection (n = 727; 33%; 59 +/- 0.2 DIM); 3) during 7 d after the first GnRH injection of Ovsynch or Heatsynch (n = 96; 32.1%; 74 +/- 0.5 DIM); 4) after estrus as part of Heatsynch (n = 212; 44.6%; 76 +/- 0.3 DIM); 4) after TAI as part of Heatsynch (n = 154; 21.1%; 76 +/- 0.4 DIM); 5) after estrus as part of Ovsynch (n = 43; 48.7%; 77 +/- 0.7 DIM); and 6) after TAI as part of Ovsynch (n = 271; 24.4%; 77 +/- 0.3 DIM). Conception rates when AI occurred after one Presynch injection were less than when AI occurred after 2 Presynch injections. Conception rates for those inseminated after either Presynch injection did not differ from those inseminated after combined Heatsynch + Ovsynch. Cows in the Ovsynch and Heatsynch protocols inseminated after estrus during the breeding week had greater conception rates than those receiving the TAI, but overall conception rates did not differ between protocols. Among cows inseminated after detected estrus, conception was greater for cows in the Heatsynch + Ovsynch protocol (77 +/- 0.4 DIM) than for those inseminated after either Presynch injection (54 +/- 0.4 or 59 +/- 0.2 DIM). We concluded that conception rates after Heatsynch and Ovsynch were similar under these experimental conditions, and that delaying first AI improved fertility for cows inseminated after detected estrus.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether organically complexed Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn would improve the reproductive performance and milk and milk component production in lactating dairy cows that began receiving bovine somatotropin in the ninth week of lactation. Holstein (n = 50) and Jersey (n = 10) cows were blocked by breed, lactation number, and incidence of retained fetal membranes. Two diets assigned within blocks and fed from parturition until 154 d of lactation were control or control supplemented daily with 26 mg of Co as Co glucoheptonate, 125 mg of Cu as Cu-Lys, 199 mg of Mn as Mn-Met, and 359 mg of Zn as Zn-Met. Cows were fitted with electronic pressure-sensing devices in the second week of lactation for detection of estrus. Ovarian structures were determined via transrectal ultrasonography at 7-d intervals from parturition until observation of the first corpus luteum. Blood samples were taken at 7-d intervals and analyzed for plasma concentrations of progesterone, insulin, and urea nitrogen. Onset of luteal activity was identified by progesterone concentrations > or = 1 ng/ml. Retained fetal membranes increased days to first estrus (detected via electronic estrous detection), first luteal activity, and first corpus luteum in control cows but not in supplemented cows. Days to first observed estrus were greater for control cows than for supplemented cows. Days to first service, days open, days from first service to conception, services per conception, milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell counts were similar for control and supplemented cows. Supplementation with complexed trace minerals effectively reduced days to first estrus.  相似文献

Our objectives were to evaluate the effect of left displacement of abomasum (LDA) after correction by toggle-pin suture (TPS) on lactation performance, reproduction and health in Holstein dairy cows in a commercial dairy farm. Cows diagnosed with LDA and corrected by the TPS procedure (188 cows) during the first 70 d postpartum were matched with control herd-mates (186 controls) according to lactation number, calving date, and previous lactation 305-d mature equivalent milk yield. Cows were grouped according to parity and days in milk and fed the same total mixed ration throughout a 321-d lactation. Data collected included yields of milk and 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM), concentration and yields of milk fat, somatic cell count, incidence of mastitis, abortion, death and culling, in addition to reproductive measures. Cows affected with LDA corrected by the TPS procedure produced less milk and tended to produce less 3.5% FCM than control cows, but the decrease in production occurred only during the first 4 mo of lactation. Left displacement of abomasum did not affect the interval from calving to conception and conception rates, but it extended the period from calving to first postpartum artificial insemination. Incidences of abortions and mastitis were not influenced by LDA. Cows affected with LDA remained in the study for a shorter period than their control herdmates, and higher proportions of cows with LDA were sold or died. Death and culling were more pronounced immediately after the diagnosis of LDA and the TPS procedure.  相似文献

Dairy cows in confinement and pasture-based feeding systems were compared across four spring-calving and three fall-calving replicates for differences in reproduction, mastitis, body weights, and body condition scores. Feeding systems and replicates included both Jersey and Holstein cows. Cows in confinement were fed a total mixed ration, and cows on pasture were supplemented with concentrates and provided baled hay or haylage when pasture supply was limiting. Breeding periods were for 75 d in spring or fall. Reproductive performance did not differ significantly due to feeding system or season. Jerseys had higher conception rates (59.6 vs. 49.5 +/- 3.3%) and higher percentages of cows pregnant in 75 d (78.1 vs. 57.9 +/- 3.9%) than Holsteins. Cows in confinement had 1.8 times more clinical mastitis and eight times the rate of culling for mastitis than did cows on pasture. Jerseys had half as many clinical cases of mastitis per cow as Holsteins. Only 41 +/- 5% of confinement Holsteins remained for a subsequent lactation, starting within the defined calving season compared with 51 +/- 5% of pastured Holsteins and 71 and 72 +/- 5% of Jerseys, respectively. Body weights and condition scores were generally higher for confinement cows than pastured cows, and Jerseys had higher condition scores and lower body weights than Holsteins. In summary, pastured cows had fewer clinical cases of mastitis, lower body condition scores, and lower body weights than confinement cows. Holsteins were less likely to rebreed, had more mastitis, higher culling rates, and lower body condition scores than Jerseys.  相似文献

Our objective was to examine further the potential profertility effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and prostaglandin F2 alpha in postpartum Holstein cows. Reproductive performance was monitored in 843 cows milked thrice daily. One group of cows (n = 218) was untreated, while three groups received either 100 micrograms gonadotropin-releasing hormone administered once between d 11 and 25 (n = 211); 25 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha given once between d 11 and 25 (n = 215); or 25 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha given once between d 25 and 40 postpartum (n = 190). No profertility effects were detected in cows, regardless of their health status during the periparturient period, except cows given gonadotropin-releasing hormone between d 11 and 18 had shorter intervals to first estrus and to first service than controls. Cows with reproductive disorders (abnormal health status) in the concurrent lactation had longer intervals from calving to conception after receiving gonadotropin-releasing hormone between d 18 and 25 or prostaglandin F2 alpha between d 33 and 40. Abnormal health status adversely affected every reproductive trait measured. Early postpartum treatments with either hormone failed to improve reproductive performance of dairy cows, in contrast to several reports of profertility effects for gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and a few reports for prostaglandin F2 alpha.  相似文献

The objective of this prospective field study was to evaluate the effects of extending the lactation period on various reproductive measurements of high-yielding Holstein cows. On 40 d in milk (DIM), cows were gynecologically examined (transrectal palpation, sonography, vaginoscopy). Cows without signs of clinical endometritis were blocked by parity and were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 experimental groups with a voluntary waiting period (VWP) of 40, 120, and 180 d, respectively (G40, n = 135; G120, n = 141; G180, n = 139). Cows of G120 and G180 were reexamined at the end of the VWP. If natural estrus was detected within 46 d after the end of the VWP, an artificial insemination was performed. If no estrus was detected, the respective cows were synchronized by applying the classical Ovsynch protocol. We found no difference in the proportion of cows in which estrus was detected between 40 to 86 DIM or in the days to first estrus between the 3 groups. Estrus detection in this period was lower in cows with body condition score <3 on 90 DIM compared with body condition score ≥3 (61.5 vs. 76.0%) and in cows with high energy-corrected milk production (ECM) on 92 DIM [58.6 vs. 70.1%, for cows with higher and lower than the median (39.9 kg) ECM, respectively]. The proportion of cows that estrus was detected within 46 d after the VWP was greater in G120 (88.9%) and G180 (90.8%) compared with G40 (70.4%). These effects were more apparent in cows with high ECM. The rate of estrus detection and of becoming pregnant in this period was greater for G120 (hazard ratio = 2.2 and 1.6, respectively) and for G180 (hazard ratio = 2.4 and 1.8) compared with G40. Cows in both groups with extended lactation had greater overall first service conception rates (G120 = 48.9%; G180 = 49.6%) and a lower number of services per pregnant cow (G120 = 1.56 ± 0.1; G180 = 1.51 ± 0.1) compared with G40 (36.6%; 1.77 ± 0.1). We observed no difference in pregnancy loss or in the proportion of cows culled up to 305 d of lactation between the 3 groups. The number of Ovsynch protocols per 1,000,000 kg of ECM was reduced by 75% in G180 and by 74% in G120 compared with G40 (5.9 vs. 7.1 vs. 25.1). In conclusion, extending the lactation of dairy cows can improve main reproductive measurements in high-yielding cows.  相似文献

Ovarian function was compared between nulliparous heifers (n = 29; 10 to 16 mo old) and lactating Holstein cows (n = 31; 55.9 +/- 3.5 d postpartum). Follicular dynamics, corpus luteum growth, and regression, and serum steroid concentrations were evaluated through ultrasonography and daily blood sampling. Most heifers (27 of 29) but only 14 of 31 cows had typical spontaneous estrous cycles after cycles were initiated. Twelve cows had atypical cycles, and 5 became anovulatory during the study. The 12 cows with atypical estrous cycles had low serum estradiol after luteolysis and failed to ovulate the dominant follicle present at luteolysis. Heifers and cows with typical cycles were compared directly. Interovulatory intervals were similar between heifers (22.0 +/- 0.4 d) and cows (22.9 +/- 0.7 d). Those animals had estrous cycles with either 2 (15 heifers; 11 cows), 3 (9 heifers; 2 cows), or 4 follicular waves (3 heifers; 1 cow). Cows ovulated later after luteolysis than heifers (5.2 +/- 0.2 vs. 4.6 +/- 0.1 d, respectively), and had more multiple ovulations (17.9 vs. 1.9%). Maximal serum estradiol concentration preceding ovulation was lower in cows than in heifers (7.9 +/- 0.8 vs. 11.3 +/- 0.6 pg/mL) even though ovulatory follicles were larger in cows (16.8 +/- 0.5 vs. 14.9 +/- 0.2 mm). Similarly, maximal serum progesterone concentration was lower for cows (5.6 +/- 0.5 vs. 7.3 +/- 0.4 ng/mL), whereas maximal volume of luteal tissue was larger for cows than heifers (11,120 +/- 678 vs. 7303 +/- 308 mm3). Thus, higher incidence of reproductive anomalies in lactating cows, such as low conception rate, ovulation failure, delayed ovulation, and multiple ovulations, may be due to lower circulating steroid concentrations in spite of larger ovulatory follicles and luteal structures.  相似文献

The objective of this field trial was to determine whether delaying the start of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) supplementation from 9 to 10 wk postpartum to 17 to 18 wk postpartum would improve reproductive performance in lactating dairy cows. Cows from nine herds (n = 798 cows; 766 Holsteins, 32 Jerseys) were assigned at random to receive rbST supplementation at 14-d intervals beginning during wk 9 to 10 (n = 399) or wk 17 to 18 (n = 399) after calving. Effects of herd, season of calving, parity, and onset of rbST supplementation (9 to 10 wk vs. 17 to 18 wk) on days to first service and days open were determined. In primiparous but not multiparous cows, there tended to be fewer days to first service and fewer days open when onset of rbST supplementation was delayed. Percentages of cows pregnant at 150, 200, and 250 d postpartum were also examined. Time of onset of rbST did not affect percentages of multiparous cows pregnant at 150, 200, and 250 d postpartum. However, there appeared to be a slight tendency for percentages of pregnant primiparous cows to be greater at 200 and 250 d postpartum for those receiving rbST supplementation beginning at 17 to 18 wk compared to those receiving rbST starting at 9 to 10 wk. In conclusion, delaying the start of rbST supplementation to wk 17 to 18 postpartum had no beneficial effect on reproductive performance of multiparous cows but tended to improve some measures of reproductive performance in primiparous cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding synthetic zeolite A for 3 wk before expected calving on peripartal serum mineral concentrations, hypocalcemia, oxidant status, and performance. Holstein cows (n = 55) entering their second or greater lactations were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 dietary treatments starting 21 d before expected calving: control (CON: 40% corn silage, 33% wheat straw, and 27% concentrate; n = 29) or experimental [EXP: CON plus zeolite A (X-Zelit, Protekta Inc., Lucknow, ON, Canada/Vilofoss, Graasten, Denmark; n = 26) at an inclusion rate of 3.3% of dry matter, targeting 500 g/d as-fed]. Cows were fed the same postpartum diet and housed in individual tiestalls through 28 d in milk. Cows fed EXP had higher serum Ca concentrations as parturition approached and during the immediate postpartum period. Serum P concentrations were lower for the EXP-fed cows during the prepartum period and the first 2 d of lactation, whereas serum Mg concentrations were lower than those of the CON-fed cows only during the immediate periparturient period. Cows fed EXP had decreased prevalence of subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) from d −1 through 3 relative to day of parturition, with the largest difference occurring within the first day postpartum. Prepartum dry matter intake tended to be decreased and rumination was decreased in cows fed EXP; however; postpartum dry matter intake, rumination, milk yield, milk component yield, and colostrum measurements did not differ between treatments. Cows fed EXP tended to have increased hazard of pregnancy by 150 d in milk when controlling for parity compared with CON-fed cows; potential reproductive benefits merit further study. This study demonstrated that zeolite A supplementation during the prepartum period results in markedly improved serum Ca concentrations around parturition and similar postpartum performance compared with controls and is effective at decreasing hypocalcemia in multiparous Holstein cows.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of treating Holstein cows with pegbovigrastim on periparturient diseases, milk production, and reproductive performance while exploring the mode of action of an immunomodulatory protein. Cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 treatments, untreated control (CTR, n = 423) and pegbovigrastim (PEG, n = 417). At 7 d from the anticipated calving date (d ?7), cows allocated to PEG received a subcutaneous injection of 15 mg of pegylated recombinant bovine granulocyte colony stimulating factor (pegbovigrastim injection, Imrestor, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN). A second injection was administered within 24 h after calving (d 0). Blood samples were obtained from a subset of cows (CTR, n = 103; PEG, n = 102) at ?7 and 0, 3, 7, and 14 d relative to parturition. Samples were used for hemogram and quantification of haptoglobin, nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, and trace and macro minerals. Vaginal cytobrush was performed on the same subset cows at d 0, 7, and 14 to assess the relative neutrophil count. Additionally, colostrum samples were collected to measure IgG, IgM, IgA, and lactoferrin concentrations. Postpartum disease occurrence was recorded from calving until 30 d in milk (DIM). Weekly milk yield was recorded for the first 12 wk after calving. Cows treated with PEG had a 3- to 4-fold increase in circulating polymorphonuclear leukocyte, lymphocyte, and monocyte numbers, with a peak at 3 d after treatment followed by a gradual decline, but the counts remained significantly greater compared with CTR at 14 DIM. The administration of PEG did not affect the incidence of clinical and subclinical mastitis, retained fetal membranes, metritis, puerperal metritis, and endometritis. Primiparous cows treated with PEG tended to have lower odds of developing hyperketonemia than CTR [odds ratio (OR) = 0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.23 to 1.42]. Cows treated with PEG had higher odds of being diagnosed with lameness within 30 DIM compared with CTR (OR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.16 to 2.76); however, we found no significant differences by 60 DIM. Treatment with PEG increased the odds of displaced abomasum (OR = 8.27, 95% CI = 1.02 to 66.6). Cows treated with PEG had higher odds of being diagnosed with 1 or more clinical diseases compared with CTR cows (OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.90). We observed no differences in linear scores or milk composition between treatments. Furthermore, primiparous cows treated with PEG produced more milk than CTR primiparous cows during the first 12 wk postpartum (PEG = 37.51 ± 0.66; CTR = 35.91 ± 0.65 kg), but no differences were observed on energy-corrected milk. Treatment did not alter reproductive performance; additionally, cows diagnosed with metritis or puerperal metritis and treated with PEG tended to have higher proportion of neutrophils in the vaginal mucosa when compared with CTR metritic cows. Although PEG treatment increased circulating polymorphonuclear leukocyte, monocyte, and lymphocyte numbers, as expected, it was detrimental to cow health because it increased morbidity.  相似文献
