The Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest is presented to a person (or persons) who has advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by distinguished contributions in such areas as the identification or solution of significant social problems; unusual initiative or dedication, in activity that makes psychology more accessible in meeting client and/or community needs; and the integration of psychology with social action. This year awards were presented to Isidor Chein and Nicholas Hobbs at the APA convention in Montreal. Chein and Hobbs each received a check for $1,000 and an engrossed citation detailing their contributions. A citation and brief biography is presented for each award recipient. Distinguished Scientific Awards for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology: 1980.

The Early Career Awards, given for the first time in 1974, recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not be more than eight years post-PhD. For purposes of this award, psychology has been divided into nine areas (human learning/cognition, psychopathology, physiological, animal, personality, developmental, methodological, social, and sensation/perception), and the awards are given in three-year cycles. The awards for 1980 were given in the areas of methodological, social, and sensation/perception psychology. Every year panels are selected for the three areas in which the award is to be given, and these panels recommend nominees to the Committee on Scientific Awards. Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology.

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology recognizes an outstanding career contribution to the teaching of psychology. Recognizing the diversity of roles and activities in which many professional psychologists are engaged, beginning in 1979 Professional Awards have been presented to three individual members of the Association whose distinguished contributions have served to advance psychology as a profession in the area of knowledge, in public service, and in professional practice. The Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who, in the opinion of the Committee on Scientific Awards, has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. In accordance with established custom, the award winner will be invited to present an address on some phase of his or her scientific work at the 1989 APA Convention. This year's winner is Leonard Berkowitz. Berkowitz is cited for his integrative work in combining experimental and social psychology theoretically and methodologically, and a biography and selected bibliography of his works are provided.
