Psi Chi/APA Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award.

The Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award is sponsored jointly by Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, and the APA. The award is presented annually to the psychology graduate student who submits the best research paper that was published or presented at a national, regional, or state psychological association conference during the past calendar year. The Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards are presented each year by the American Psychological Association at the Annual Convention. The award winners for 1972 are Edwin E. Patterson is cited for his tenacious, programmatic, and inventive research on family interaction processes, especially his naturalistic studies of coercive interactions involving aggressive youngsters. In addition, he has produced a carefully devised, meticulously evaluated, and widely respected parental training program. The 2004 Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology was awarded to Edwin A. Fleishman, for his significant contributions to the science and applications of psychology, which he has sustained over his remarkable career. He is cited for his research, which has had a profound influence on our understanding of human capabilities, their measurement, their development, and their application in the world of work. Through his many influential leadership roles, as president of the International Association of Applied Psychology and three divisions of the American Psychological Association, and as editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology, he has helped shape our profession. Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award.

The Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award was established to recognize young researchers at the beginning of their professional lives. Allison M. Ryan was named the winner of the 1999 Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award, in recognition of her article, "Why Do Some Students Avoid Asking for Help? An Examination of the Interplay Among Students' Academic Efficacy, Teachers' Social-Emotional Role, and the Classroom Goal Structure." 1998/1999 award winners: Awards for Distinguished Contributions to the Public Interest.

The Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. Two awards are given, the first to a psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the public interest in the early stages of his/her career, and the second to a senior psychologist. It is announced here that Bonnie R. Strickland was the senior winner of this year's Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Public Interest, "for her four decades of outstanding research, writing, and overall contributions to psychology in the public interest." A citation is presented, along with a biography and selected bibliography of the winner's work. Also included here is the address delivered at the 106th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association by James G. Kelly, winner of the Award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology in the Public Interest in 1997. Finally, included here is a citation, announcing that Leonard Bickman was the winner of the 1998/1999 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy, "for his seminal contributions to our understanding of public policy and societal problems and in recognition of the landmark Fort Bragg study of children's mental health services." The Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who, in the opinion of the Committee on Scientific Awards, has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. In accordance with established custom, the award winner will be invited to present an address on some phase of his or her scientific work at the 1990 APA Convention. The winner for 1989 is Aaron T. Beck. He received this award "for advancing our understanding and treatment of psychopathology." His pioneering work on depression has profoundly altered the way this disorder is conceptualized, assessed, diagnosed, and treated. The Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. The 1984 winner is Gerald R. Patterson.
