The effect of different toughening strategies on the mechanical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotube/polycarbonate composite (PC/MWNT) for electromagnetic interference shielding was analyzed from the mechanical and fracture tests using linear elastic fracture mechanics. The effect of processing (injection and compression molding) and manufacturing (annealing) conditions in the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity has been studied. The classic electromagnetic theory predicts a shielding effectiveness around 40 dB for nanocomposites with 5 wt% of MWNT in the frequency range studied. These values make these compounds to be very interesting materials for potential applications as electronic housings. Therefore, a combination of cyclic form of polybutylene terephthalate addition and annealing strategies let to optimize flexural parameters and improve the flexural modulus of PC composites. The rheology results showed that the dynamic moduli and the viscosity grew with increasing MWNT content. A significant change in frequency dependence of the moduli was observed, with respect to pure PC, which indicates a transition from a liquid‐like to a solid‐like behavior. Finally, the morphological study proves that the composites display different toughening mechanisms as function of carbon nanotube quantity. This fact could explain the different fracture behaviors of materials. In summary, it has been proved that it is possible to obtain PC/MWNT nanocomposites with relatively high conductivity, minimizing the loss of mechanical properties, using processing techniques easily scalable at industrial level. The Monte Carlo simulation of filled conductive polymer materials is a method of continuously generating a random conformation and averaging the interesting results to simulate the random dispersion of fillers in space. In our simulation, the irregular shapes of the filler were abstracted into regular ones. Carbon black (CB) aggregates were modeled as spheres, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were modeled as capped cylinders. The connection of the fillers was estimated via the calculation of the shortest distance between them; this determined whether a percolation pathway was formed or not. Numerical results were obtained, and these highlight the effects of the filler size, including the aspect ratio of CNTs and the ratio of the diameter of the CB aggregates to the diameter of the CNTs on the electrical percolation threshold (EPT). We found that the EPT decreased with increasing CNT aspect ratio and decreased the diameter ratio of the CB aggregates to CNTs. The simulation results were obtained by a simple pathway‐finder algorithm, which was proven to be effective compared with existing numerical, theoretical, and experimental simulations. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electrical and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polycarbonate (MWCNT/PC) composites are investigated. The composites were prepared by diluting masterbatch (15 wt.% MWCNT) using a Haake mixer and then injection-molded into a dog-bone mold. Various MWCNT alignments were created by changing operating conditions. Electrical resistivity measurements were carried out at three different areas at both parallel and perpendicular to the flow direction. The results showed higher resistivity and percolation threshold at higher alignments in both parallel and perpendicular to the flow direction. By applying Ohm’s law it was seen that after percolation, the field emission mechanisms are more important at higher orientations. Higher MWCNT alignments were observed in areas with higher resistivities, and this was verified using SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Additionally, EMI SE measurements were done on compression-molded samples at different concentrations and thicknesses. The results showed that both EMI SE by reflection and absorption increased with increase in MWCNT loading and shielding material thickness.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/portland cement(PC) composites have been fabricated to evaluate their electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE). The results show that they can be used for the shielding of EMI in the microwave range. The incorporation of 15 wt.% MWCNTs in the PC matrix produces a SE more than 27 dB in X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), and this SE is found to be dominated by absorption. Furthermore, the structural analysis, surface morphology and surface interaction of MWCNTs with PC matrix have been explored using XRD, SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique.  相似文献

Carbon-matrix composites with self-assembly interconnected carbon nano-ribbon networks were fabricated using natural and inexpensive rice husks by impregnating the rice husks with transitional metal solutions and sintering. The nano-structure of the composite was characterized using transmission electron microscopy. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the composite was evaluated in the frequency range of 30 kHz–1.5 GHz. The electrical conductivity was measured as a function of the sintering temperature. These characteristics were compared with those of carbon-matrix composites without nano-ribbon networks.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity and percolation threshold of single and hybrid carbon filled composites are experimentally investigated. Polystyrene, carbon fiber (CF) and carbon black (CB) at three CF/CB ratios of 1.67, 3.33, 6.67 were compounded in a twin screw extruder micro‐compounder and compression molded into sheets. The through‐plane and in‐plane electrical conductivity of the composites are measured by 2 and 4 probe techniques. The percolation threshold of the single filler and hybrid composites are determined from the experimental results using a percolation model. The hybrid composites have a higher value of electrical conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the single CF filler composite except for the CF/CB ratio of 6.67. The percolation threshold for the cases of single filler and hybrid composites are modeled. The hard core / soft shell model is used and it is assumed that the percolation in a particle filled system depends on the ratio of tunneling distance to particle diameter. This ratio is determined by modeling single filler composites using the experimental data and kept constant in the modeling of the hybrid system. Finite size scaling is used to determine the percolation threshold for the infinite size hybrid system containing (nanosize) particles and micron size fibers for three CF/CB ratios. The simulation results show that the percolations of hybrid composites have the same trends observed in the experimental results. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. We demonstrate a method that involves melt blending of polycarbonate (PC) and melt‐blended acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to prepare electrically conducting PC/MWCNT nanocomposites at significantly low MWCNT loading. The partial solubility of ABS in PC led to a selective dispersion of the MWCNTs in the ABS phase after melt‐blending PC and ABS. Thus, a sudden rise in electrical conductivity (∼108 orders of magnitude) of the nanocomposites was found at 0.328 vol% of MWCNT, which was explained in terms of double percolation phenomena. By optimizing the ratio of PC and the ABS–MWCNT mixture, an electrical conductivity of 5.58 × 10−5 and 7.23 × 10−3 S cm−1 was achieved in the nanocomposites with MWCNT loading as low as 0.458 and 1.188 vol%, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a good dispersion and distribution of the MWCNTs in the ABS phase, leading to the formation of continuous MWCNT network structure throughout the matrix even at very low MWCNT loading. Storage modulus and thermal stability of the PC were also increased by the presence of a small amount of MWCNTs in the nanocomposites.POLYM. This study presents the preparation of electrically conducting poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites with very low percolation threshold (pc). The method involves solution blending of PCL and MWCNT in the presence of commercial PCL beads. The PCL beads were added into high viscous PCL/MWCNT mixture during evaporation of solvent. Here, the used commercial PCL polymer beads act as an ‘excluded volume’ in the solution blended PCL/MWCNT region. Thus, the effective concentration of the MWCNT dramatically increases in the solution blended region and a strong interconnected continuous conductive network path of CNT−CNT is assumed throughout the matrix phase with the addition of PCL bead which plays a crucial role to improve the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and electrical conductivity at very low MWCNT loading. Thus, high EMI SE value (∼23.8 dB) was achieved at low MWCNT loading (1.8 wt %) in the presence of 70 wt % PCL bead and the high electrical conductivity of ∼2.49×10−2 S cm−1 was achieved at very low MWCNT loading (∼0.15 wt %) with 70 wt % PCL bead content in the composites. The electrical conductivity gradually increased with increasing the PCL bead concentration, as well as, MWCNT loading in the composites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. High reliability and high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding polymeric composite was fabricated by introducing carbon nanotube films (CNTf) into an epoxy (EP) matrix as mechanical and EMI shielding reinforcement simultaneously. According to the computed tomography (CT) detection recorded by a high-speed camera, CNTf exhibited excellent mechanical behavior and good energy absorption. While being introduced into laminated EP composite, the CNTf enhanced both the mechanical performance and EMI shielding performance. The damage mechanism of CNTf/EP was studied by CT detection of the impact process, indicating that the CNTf absorbed the impact energy by improving the delamination resistance. Additionally, the multilayered CNTf can trap and attenuate the entered electromagnetic microwaves by repeated adsorption, reflection, and scattering in the composite, resulting in excellent EMI shielding performance. Consequently, the energy absorption and the total shielding effectiveness of the CNTf/EP reached to 4.58 × 10−3 J and 52.31 dB, respectively. Therefore, we demonstrated that the CNTf was an ideal functional reinforcement for mechanically strong and high-performance EMI shielding polymeric composites and the CNTf reinforced EP composite is promising in practical EMI-shielding applications.  相似文献

Electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness at microwave (200–2000 MHz) and X‐band (8–12 GHz) frequency range of polyaniline (PAni) composites were studied. It has been observed that EMI shielding of conductive polyaniline (PAni)–ethylene vinyl acetate composites increases with the increase in the loading levels of the conductive polymer doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid. The result indicates that the composites having higher PAni loading (>23%) can be used for EMI shielding materials and those with lower PAni loading can be used for the dissipation of electrostatic charge. Carbon nanotube reinforced carbon fiber/pyrolytic carbon composites were fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis method and their electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) was investigated over the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz (X-band). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were in situ formed through catalyzing hydrocarbon gases evaporating out of phenolic resin with nano-scaled Ni particles. The content of CNTs increased with the increase of Ni loadings (0.00, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.25 wt.%) in phenolic resin. Thermal gravimetrical analysis results showed that the carbon yield of phenolic resin increased with the addition of Ni catalyst. With the formation of CNTs, the EMI SE increased from 28.3 to 75.2 dB in X-band. The composite containing 5.0 wt.% CNTs showed an SE higher than 70 dB in the whole X-band.  相似文献

This paper reports results on experimental investigation of the conductivity behavior of carbon fiber filled polymer composites at the percolation threshold. Two types of carbon fiber‐epoxy matrix composites have been studied and comparison of the measured data has been made. These two types of composites differ in the surface modification of carbon fibers (in one case the surface of carbon fibers is covered with polymer beads using the microencapsulation technology, in the other their surface stayed unmodified). Experimental data reveal that surface modification of carbon fibers influences greatly the DC conductivity (percolation threshold moves to higher concentrations) but does not influence the AC electrical properties. From the frequency dependence of conductivity upon fiber concentration it becomes clear that it is not possible to predict the high frequency conductivity (electromagnetic interference shielding properties) based on the DC conductivity. Percolation behavior of conductivity as a function of conductive filler concentration is typical only for DC or low frequency AC conductivity. The percolation threshold gradually vanishes for high frequencies of electromagnetic field. The temperature dependence of electrical properties has also been studied. Composites with concentration near the percolation threshold show the switch‐off effect (at the specific temperature the DC conductivity drops by several orders of magnitude). This switch‐off effect does not occur for high frequency AC conductivity.  相似文献

The electrical, mechanical, and piezoresistive properties of ternary composites based on elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and polyaniline (PANI) were studied and compared with those of binary PDMS–CNT composites. The presence of PANI affected the percolating network of the CNTs. At lower PANI concentrations (2.5 and 5%), the conductive network of the CNTs was constructively modified; this led to an enhancement in the conductivity in the sample containing 2% CNTs. A higher PANI content (7.5%) hindered the flow of main charge carriers through the composite. The piezoresistive response of the binary and ternary composites was studied by cyclic experiments under compression loads. In all of the samples, the electrical resistance increased monotonically up to a 10% strain. The reproducibility of the piezoresistive behavior in the binary and ternary composites provided evidence that the fillers could reversibly recover their initial position together with the PDMS chains without a significant displacement with respect to their original positions. The reduction of the piezoresistive sensibility by PANI addition was attributed to the displacement restrictions of the CNTs within the composite under pressure because of the volume exclusion of PANI particles; this maintained the probability of CNT contact and increased the possibility of the formation of new CNT conductive channels. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The addition of various particulate nano‐carbon (PNC) fillers to heat‐resistant poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was carried out to prepare conductive composites for use in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application. Three different PNC fillers, namely N472 (Vulcan XC‐72), N550 (Fast Extruding Furnace) and N774 (Semi‐Reinforcing Furnace), were used in various concentrations to prepare composite systems PVDF/N472, PVDF/N550 and PVDF/N774 by solution casting followed by a moulding technique. These PNC fillers have a particle size at the nanometre level, but they have an aggregating tendency; both these characteristics influence the properties of composites to which such fillers are added. The percolation threshold of the PVDF/PNC composites was theoretically determined using the sigmoidal Boltzmann model and classical theory and compared. Theoretical models were also used to predict composition‐dependent electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity is correlated to that of EMI shielding effectiveness at ambient temperature. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effect of carbon fiber (CF) modification with multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) on the electrical, mechanical, and rheological properties of the polycarbonate (PC)/CF/CNT composite was investigated. The CF and multiwall CNT (MWCNT) were treated with sulfuric acid and nitric acid (3:1 wt %) mixture, to modify the CF with the CNT. For the PC with acid-treated CNT (a-CNT) modified acid-treated CF (a-CF) (PC/a-CF/a-CNT) composite, the electrical conductivity, and the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) showed the highest values, compared with those of the PC/a-CF and PC/a-CF/CNT composites. The EMI SE of the PC/a-CF (10 wt %)/a-CNT (0.5 wt %) composite was found to be 26 (dB at the frequency of 10.0 GHz, and the EMI SE was increased by 91.2%, compared to that of the PC/a-CF composite at the same amount of total filler content. Among the composites studied in this work, the PC/a-CF/a-CNT composite also showed the highest values of relative permittivity (εr) and dielectric loss factor. The above results suggest that the CF modification with the a-CNT significantly affected the electrical conductivity and EMI SE of the composite, and the hybrid fillers of the a-CNT and a-CF resulted in good electrical pathways in the PC/a-CF/a-CNT composite. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the effect of the mixing process on the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of nickel/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) composites. Nickel in either powder or filament form was used as the filler material. It was mixed with ABS by two mixing processes: one was the Brabender‐mixing method, in which nickel was mixed in the polymer melt by a strong shear at high temperatures, and the other was a simple dry mixing method performed in a centrifugal ball mill. Our results showed that the dry‐mixing method could produce EMI shielding effectiveness of 36 dB at the 3 vol % nickel filaments level. In contrast, we need 20 vol % nickel powder to exhibit some shielding effectiveness for the Brabender method. After the nondestructive X‐ray examination and four‐point probe resistivity measurements, we concluded that better EMI shielding effectiveness could be achieved when the mixing method provided a state of uniformity on the macroscale, but not on the microscale. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites were prepared using coagulation method. The electrical conductivity and the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of SWNT/PMMA composites over the X‐band (8–12 GHz) and the microwave (200–2000 MHz) frequency range have been investigated. The electrical conductivity of composites increases with SWNT loading by 13 orders of magnitude, from 10?15 to 10?2 Ω?1 cm?1 with a percolation threshold of about 3 wt% SWNTs. The effect of the sample thickness on the shielding effectiveness has been studied, and correlated to the electrical conductivity of composites. The data suggest that SWNT/PMMA composites containing higher SWNT loading (above 10 wt%) be useful for EMI shielding and those with lower SWNT loading be useful for electrostatic charge dissipation. The dominant shielding mechanism of SWNT/PMMA composites was also discussed. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Electrically conducting rubbery composites based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared through melt blending using a torque rheometer equipped with a mixing chamber. The electrical conductivity, morphology, rheological properties and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the TPU/CNT composites were evaluated and also compared with those of carbon black (CB)‐filled TPU composites prepared under the same processing conditions. For both polymer systems, the insulator–conductor transition was very sharp and the electrical percolation threshold at room temperature was at CNT and CB contents of about 1.0 and 1.7 wt%, respectively. The EMI SE over the X‐band frequency range (8–12 GHz) for TPU/CNT and TPU/CB composites was investigated as a function of filler content. EMI SE and electrical conductivity increased with increasing amount of conductive filler, due to the formation of conductive pathways in the TPU matrix. TPU/CNT composites displayed higher electrical conductivity and EMI SE than TPU/CB composites with similar conductive filler content. EMI SE values found for TPU/CNT and TPU/CB composites containing 10 and 15 wt% conductive fillers, respectively, were in the range ?22 to ?20 dB, indicating that these composites are promising candidates for shielding applications. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of well dispersed single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/polyurethane composites was studied and the results show that they can be used as effective and lightweight shielding materials. The EMI shielding of the composite shows a reflection-dominant mechanism, while a shift from reflection to absorption was observed with increased SWCNT loading and frequency. This is explained using EMI shielding theory and the intrinsic properties of the components.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polystyrene (PS) composites were injection molded into a mold equipped with three different cavities. A high alignment of MWCNTs in PS was achieved by applying high shear force to the melt. The effects of gate and runner designs and processing conditions, i.e., mold temperature, melt temperature, injection/holding pressure and injection velocity, on the volume resistivity of the composites were investigated in both the thickness and in-flow directions. The experiments showed that volume resistivity could be varied up to 7 orders of magnitude by changing the processing conditions in the injection molded samples. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the molded composites was studied by considering the alignment of the MWCNTs. The EMI SE decreased with an increase in the alignment of the injection-molded MWCNTs in the PS matrix. This study shows that mold designs and processing conditions significantly influence the electrical conductivity and shielding behavior of injection molded CNT-filled composites.  相似文献
