Composite materials based on Alfa fibers and unsaturated polyester resins were manufactured by the hand layup technique. Mechanical properties of composites prepared form Alfa fibers collected from the region of Boussaada (Algeria), treated by various concentrations of NaOH solutions (1, 3, 6, 9, and 12%) during 24 h were found to be better than those of the untreated ones. The 6% NaOH-treated fibers composite showed maximum improvement in tensile strengths about 63% and the 9% NaOH treated fibers composite showed maximum improvement in flexural strength about 52%, respectively. The tensile modulus improved by 50.48%. The flexural modulus was also improved by 44.06% compared to the untreated Alfa fiber composite. FTIR characterization of Alfa fibers showed that the number of hydroxyl groups (OH) decreased and the crystallinity index increase by 16.60% after alkaline treatment. SEM observations on fibers' surfaces showed that the alkaline treatment improved the interface adhesion of fiber–matrix.  相似文献

The scanning electron micrographs (SEM) were taken at different magnifications with respect of the fractured surfaces of the polymer composites prepared from unsaturated polyester resin and jute sliver with 60% fiber loading by weight. The composite specimens were prepared using both untreated (control) and chemically modified (bleached) jute fibers by solution impregnation and hot curing methods and are designated as JPH-60(C) and JPH-60(B), respectively. The method of preparation of the composite specimens have been discussed. The specimens were subjected to tensile and flexural tests and the fractured surfaces were observed under SEM as stated. The fiber surface morphology was also studied from the SEM photographs in the case of the control and bleached jute filaments. The SEM photographs of the fractured surfaces of the composites showed varied extents of fiber pull-outs under both tensile and flexural failure modes. The nature of interfacial adhesion has been discussed on the basis of the SEM study. A good correlation between the SEM study and the mechanical strength properties of the composites could be established. Exceptionally high flexural strength of the composites JPH-60(B) compared to JPH-60(C) could be explained from the SEM study.  相似文献

Composites based on phenolic matrices and both untreated and alkali and ionized air–treated jute fibers were prepared. Different fiber lengths and fiber content were used to reinforce the phenolic matrices. The jute fibers were characterized with respect to lignin, holocellulose, ash, and humidity contents and also to the crystallinity index. The mechanical properties of fibers were investigated by means of tensile analysis and the morphology by SEM. The untreated and treated jute fiber–reinforced composites were characterized as to water absorption. The mechanical property and morphological aspects of the composites were evaluated by impact strength and photomicrographs obtained from SEM. Among the jute fiber treatments considered in the present work, the treatment with a solution of 5% NaOH presented the best results because: (1) the fiber presented a higher tensile strength, and a larger percentage of elongation at break; (2) the composite reinforced with this fiber presented the highest impact strength results when this was the unique treatment (20% of fiber), as well as when it was combined with ionized air (30% of fiber); and (3) the composite that presented the lowest water uptake was that reinforced with this fiber. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Betel nut leaf fiber (BNLF) is a new finding as cellulosic filler for polymer composites. Its main constituents are 75% α‐cellulose, 12% hemicelluloses, 10% lignin, and 3% others matter, viscosity average molecular weight 132,000 and degree of crystallinity 70%. In the present work, BNLF reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared using heat press molding method. 5–20 wt% short length fiber is taken for getting benefits of easy manufacturing and the fiber was chemically treated with NaOH, dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and maleic anhydride‐modified PP (MAPP) to promote the interfacial bond with PP. The extent of modification of fiber was assessed on the basis of morphology, bulk density, moisture absorption, thermal, and mechanical properties of untreated fiber, treated fiber, and their reinforcing PP composites. The tensile and flexural strength of composites increase with the increase of fiber loading up to 10 and 20 wt%, respectively. It was also observed that Young's modulus and flexural modulus increase with fiber loading. The thermal degradation behavior of resulting composites was investigated. Among the various treated fibers, MAPP‐treated fiber composite showed best interfacial interactions as well as mechanical and thermal properties. POLYM. The aim of the present study is to investigate and compare the mechanical properties of raw jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites with sodium hydroxide treated jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites. This is followed by comparisons of the sodium hydroxide treated jute and sisal fiber reinforced composites. The jute and sisal fibers were treated with 20% sodium hydroxide for 2 h and then incorporated into the epoxy matrix by a molding technique to form the composites. Similar techniques have been adopted for the fabrication of raw jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The raw jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites and the sodium hydroxide treated jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites were characterized by FTIR. The mechanical properties (tensile and flexural strength), water absorption and morphological changes were investigated for the composite samples. It was found that the sodium hydroxide treated jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites exhibited better mechanical properties than the raw jute and raw sisal fiber reinforced composites. When comparing the sodium hydroxide treated jute and sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites, the sodium hydroxide treated jute fiber reinforced composites exhibited better mechanical properties than the latter.  相似文献

Industrial hemp fibers were treated with a 5 wt % NaOH, 2 wt % Na2SO3 solution at 120°C for 60 min to remove noncellulosic fiber components. Analysis of fibers by lignin analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXRD) and differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), supported that alkali treatment had (i) removed lignin, (ii) separated fibers from their fiber bundles, (iii) exposed cellulose hydroxyl groups, (iv) made the fiber surface cleaner, and (v) enhanced thermal stability of the fibers by increasing cellulose crystallinity through better packing of cellulose chains. Untreated and alkali treated short (random and aligned) and long (aligned) hemp fiber/epoxy composites were produced with fiber contents between 40 and 65 wt %. Although alkali treatment generally improved composite strength, better strength at high fiber contents for long fiber composites was achieved with untreated fiber, which appeared to be due to less fiber/fiber contact between alkali treated fibers. Composites with 65 wt % untreated, long aligned fiber were the strongest with a tensile strength (TS) of 165 MPa, Young's modulus (YM) of 17 GPa, flexural strength of 180 MPa, flexural modulus of 9 GPa, impact energy (IE) of 14.5 kJ/m2, and fracture toughness (KIc) of 5 MPa m1/2. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural fiber‐reinforced biodegradable polyester composites were prepared from biodegradable polyesters and surface‐untreated or ‐treated abaca fibers (length ca. 5 mm) by melt mixing and subsequent injection molding. Poly(butylene succinate)(PBS), polyestercarbonate (PEC)/poly(lactic acid)(PLA) blend, and PLA were used as biodegradable polyesters. Esterifications using acetic anhydride and butyric anhydride, alkali treatment, and cyanoethylation were performed as surface treatments on the fiber. The flexural moduli of all the fiber‐reinforced composites increased with fiber content. The effect of the surface treatment on the flexural modulus of the fiber‐reinforced composites was not so pronounced. The flexural strength of PBS composites increased with fiber content, and esterification of the fiber by butyric anhydride gave the best result. For the PEC/PLA composites, flexural strength increased slightly with increased fiber content (0–20 wt.‐%) in the case of using untreated fiber, while it increased considerably in the case of using the fiber esterified by butyric anhydride. For the PLA composite, flexural strength did not increase with the fiber reinforcement. The result of soil‐burial tests showed that the composites using untreated fiber have a higher weight loss than both the neat resin and the composites made using acetylated fiber.

Ramie fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composites were successfully prepared by hot compression molding. Different treatment techniques were used to modify the surface of ramie fiber. The influence of diammonium phosphate (DAP) on the interfacial adhesion between ramie fiber and PLA composites was investigated by the contact angle measurements, FTIR and SEM analyses. The contact angle measurement results showed that alkali treatment combined with DAP was very efficient in decreasing the hydrophilicity of fibers. After treatment, the hydrophilicity of untreated ramie fiber from 5.9 ± 1.3 decreased to 2.0 ± 0.8 mJ/m2. The wettability of alkali/silane/DAP-treated ramie fiber/PLA composite was higher (95.4° ± 1.3°) than that of pure ramie fiber/PLA composite (87.3° ± 1.9°). The FTIR results were consistent with the wetting measurements as the increment of hydrophilicity. Thermal analysis indicated that DAP-modified ramie fiber/PLA composites exhibited a lower thermal decomposition temperature, unique decomposition behavior and more residual char formation at decomposition temperature. The tensile, flexural and impact properties of DAP-modified ramie fiber composites were comparable to those of untreated ramie fiber composite. Moreover, proper alignment and uniform distribution of ramie fibers within the PLA matrix were found to be excellent. The morphological structures observed by SEM showed that well-modified ramie fibers enhanced the failure of the PLA composites in tensile, flexural and impact tests.  相似文献

Coir, an important lignocellulosic fiber, can be incorporated in polymers like unsaturated polyester in different ways for achieving desired properties and texture. But its high level of moisture absorption, poor wettability and insufficient adhesion between untreated fiber and the polymer matrix lead to debonding with age. In order to improve the above qualities, adequate surface modification is required. In our present work, fiber surface modification was effected through dewaxing, alkali (5%) treatment, aqueous graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto 5% alkali treated coir for different extents using CuSO4 – NaIO4 combination as an initiator system and cyanoexhylation with a view to improve the mechanical performance of coir‐polyester composites. Mechanical properties like tensile strength (PS), flexural strength (ES) and impact strength (IS) of the composites as a function of fiber loading and fiber surface modification have been evaluated. Composites containing z5 wt% of fiber (untreated) improved tensile and flexural strength by 30% and 27% respectively in comparison to neat polyester. The work of fracture (impact strength) of the composite with 25 wt% fiber content was found to be 967 J/m. The elongation at break of the composites exhibits an increase with the introduction of fiber, All types of surface modification result In improved mechanical properties of the composites. Significant improvement in mechanical strength was also observed for composites prepared from 5% PMMA grafted fiber.  相似文献

In the present study, the mechanical and thermal properties of sisal fiber‐reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP)‐toughened epoxy composites were investigated. The sisal fibers were chemically treated with alkali (NaOH) and silane solutions in order to improve the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The chemical composition of resins and fibers was identified by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. The UP‐toughened epoxy blends were obtained by mixing UP (5, 10, and 15 wt%) into the epoxy resin. The fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by incorporating sisal fibers (10, 20, and 30 wt%) within the optimized UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes of the fibers and the adhesion between the fibers and the UP‐toughened epoxy system. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber (30 wt%) ‐reinforced composites increased by 83% and 55%, respectively, as compared with that of UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber and its composite exhibited higher thermal stability than the untreated and alkali‐treated fiber systems. An increase in storage modulus and glass transition temperature was observed for the UP‐toughened epoxy matrix on reinforcement with treated fibers. The water uptake behavior of both alkali and alkali‐silane‐treated fiber‐reinforced composites is found to be less as compared with the untreated fiber‐reinforced composite. J. VINYL ADDIT. Star‐shaped bio‐based resins were synthesized by direct condensation of lactic acid (LA) with xylitol followed by end‐functionalizing of branches by methacrylic anhydride with three different LA chain lengths (3, 5 and 7). The thermomechanical and structural properties of the resins were characterized by 13C NMR, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, rheometry, DSC, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), TGA and flexural and tensile tests. An evaluation of the effect of chain length on the synthesized resins showed that the resin with five LAs exhibited the most favorable thermomechanical properties. Also, the resin's glass transition temperature (103 °C) was substantially higher than that of the thermoplast PLA (ca 55 °C). The resin had low viscosity at its processing temperature (80 °C). The compatibility of the resin with natural fibers was investigated for biocomposite manufacturing. Finally, composites were produced from the n5‐resin (80 wt% fiber content) using jute fiber. The thermomechanical and morphological properties of the biocomposites were compared with jute‐PLA composites and a hybrid composite made of the impregnated jute fibers with n5 resin and PLA. SEM and DMA showed that the n5‐jute composites had better mechanical properties than the other composites produced. Inexpensive monomers, good thermomechanical properties and good processability of the n5 resin make the resin comparable with commercial unsaturated polyester resins. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In the present study, randomly aligned jute fiber/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and two-directionally aligned jute fabric/PLA green composites with jute (50% by weight) treated with electron beam at different dosages (0, 5, 10, 30, 50, and 100?kGy) were fabricated by compression molding technique and the effect of electron beam treatment on their thermal properties was investigated in terms of thermal expansion, thermal stability, dynamic mechanical thermal property, and heat deflection temperature (HDT). The dynamic storage modulus and HDT of neat PLA were significantly increased by incorporating jute fibers or fabrics into PLA, whereas the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the damping property were decreased, reflecting the enhancement in the interfacial adhesion between the jute and the PLA by electron beam treatment with an optimal dosage of 10?kGy and the reinforcing effect by jute. The result exhibited that the thermal stability, storage modulus, and HDT of jute/PLA green composites were highest with the electron beam irradiation of jute at 10?kGy and lowest at 100?kGy, whereas the CTE and tan δ were lowest at 10?kGy and highest at 100?kGy. The thermal behavior of random jute/PLA green composites shows a similar tendency to that of 2D jute/PLA counterparts and the influence of electron beam irradiation on the thermal properties studied was consistent with each other. The thermomechanical analysis, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and HDT results were in agreement with each other, showing a comparable effect of electron beam irradiation on composites thermal characteristics.  相似文献

Atmospheric plasma treatment (APT) was used to surface‐activate graphite nanoplatelets (GnP) as well as highly graphitic P100 fibers used to manufacture composites. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed an increase in the O/C ratio of the treated surfaces when using either CO or O2 as the active gas, whereas CO exhibited less damage to the treated reinforcement carbon material. APT of P100 fibers resulted in a 75% increase in composite tensile strength when compared to composites using untreated fibers. Surface treatment of GnPs also resulted in GnP/epoxy composites with significantly higher glass transition temperatures (Tg's) and 50% higher flexural strengths than those with no surface treatment because of stronger particle‐to‐resin coupling, which was also evidenced by the fracture surfaces. The effect of GnP loading concentration and plasma treatment duration was also evaluated on the tensile strength of fiber‐reinforced composites. The addition of untreated GnP filler resulted in a decrease in strength up to the 1% loading. However, higher loading conditions resulted in a 20% improvement because of GnP orientation effects. Fracture surfaces suggest that the fibers provided a mechanism for the GnPs to orient themselves parallel to the fiber axis, developing an oriented matrix microstructure that contributes to added crack deflection. Incorporating surface‐treated GnPs in these composites resulted in tensile strengths that were as high as 50% stronger than the untreated systems for all loading conditions. Increased GnP‐to‐matrix bonding as well as enhanced orientation of the GnPs resulted in multifunctional composites with improved mechanical performance. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The development of high performance composites from a cheap natural fiber, jute, as reinforcement is particularly significant from an economic point of view. In this work, jute fiber-unsaturated polyester(GP) composites having appreciable mechanical properties were prepared by using solution impregnation and hot curing methods. Both unbleached (control) and bleached jute slivers with various percentages of fiber loadings were used to prepare the composites and were named JPH (C) i.e., Jute Polyester Hot Curing (control), and JPH (B) i.e., Jute Polyester Hot Curing (bleached), respectively. Mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strain, toughness, and moduli of both the grades have been compared. Composites having 60 wt% of jute fiber yielded the best results. JPH (B) showed much better flexural properties than JPH (C), although the tensile properties of the latter were better. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) of the JPH (B) was found to be higher than JPH (C). The nature of fiber-resin bonding was studied from scanning electron micrographs of the specimens subjected to tensile and flexural fracture. Dynamic mechanical properties were found to be very high, superior even to those of glass fiber reinforced composites. The flexural storage modulus was found to be 12.3 GPa at 30°C and to decrease slowly with temperature. The major finding in this work is the attainment of high mechanical properties of composite specimens with 60 wt %fiber loading. On a weight and cost basis, bleached jute fibres were found to be better reinforcements than other fibers with usual surface modification by coating or grafting processes.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of tossa jute fibers were improved by using NaOH treatment process to improve the mechanical properties of composites materials. Shrinkage of fibers during this process has significant effects to the fiber structure, as well as to the mechanical fiber properties, such as tensile strength and modulus. Isometric NaOH‐treated jute yarns (20 min at 20°C in 25% NaOH solution) lead to an increase in yarn tensile strength and modulus of ∼ 120% and 150%, respectively. These changes in mechanical properties are affected by modifying the fiber structure, basically via the crystallinity ratio, degree of polymerization, and orientation (Hermans factor). Structure–property relationships, developed for cellulosic man‐made fibers, were used with a high correlation factor to describe the behavior of the jute fiber yarns. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract

Jute fiber (Hessian cloth) reinforced low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composites were prepared by heat press molding techniques. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength (TS), bending strength (BS), and elongation at break of the composites were studied. The enhancement of TS (33%) and BS (50%) were obtained as a result of reinforcment jute fabrics in LDPE. In order to improve the mechanical properties and adhesion between jute and LDPE, hessian cloth were each treated with 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The HEMA-treated jute composite showed higher tensile and bending strength compared to untreated jute composite and LDPE. Dielectric properties like dielectric constant and loss tangent (tan δ) of jute, LDPE and composites were studied. Ferro to paraelectric phase transition occurred in both treated and untreated jute composites containing more than 20% jute. Water uptake behaviors of the composite were monitored and HEMA-treated composite showed lower water absorption behavior. The adhesion nature of jute and LDPE also characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), better adhesion was observed between HEMA-treated jute and LDPE over untreated ones.  相似文献

In recent years, environmentally friendly materials have become popular because of the growing environmental demands in human society. Natural fibers are now widely used as reinforcements in polymer matrix composites for their various advantages such as low cost, light weight, abundant resources, and biodegradability. However, the applications of these kinds of composites are limited because of their unsatisfactory mechanical properties, which are caused by the poor interfacial compatibility between the fibers and the thermoplastic matrix. In this paper, three methods, including (i) alkali treatment, (ii) alkali and methyl methacrylate (MMA) treatment, and (iii) alkali and polyamide (PA) treatment (APT), were used to treat jute fibers and improve the interfacial adhesion of jute‐fiber‐reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites (JPCs). The mechanical properties of the JPCs were tested, and their impact fracture surfaces were observed. Infrared spectral analysis showed that MMA was grafted and that PA was coated onto the surface of jute fibers. Mechanical tests indicated that the three kinds of pretreated composites presented better mechanical properties than untreated composites. Among them, the APT composite had the best comprehensive properties. Compared with untreated composites, the tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of APT composite were increased by 24.8, 31.3, and 28.4%, respectively. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that better interfacial compatibility between jute fibers and PP occured in this kind of composite. J. VINYL ADDIT.
