The modern, the postmodern, and George Kelly's personal construct psychology.

Comments on the J. Martin and J. Sugarman (see record 2000-08148-003) discussion on the relationship between modern and postmodern approaches to psychology. The current author notes that, although Martin and Sugarman's efforts are laudable, they ignored an important and seminal figure by failing to examine and incorporate G. Kelly and his personal construct psychology (PCP)—an approach that embraces much of the critique offered by postmodernists without abandoning a traditional emphasis on psychological meaning. Between the modern and the postmodern: The possibility of self and progressive understanding in psychology.

Psychology assumes defensible notions of human subjectivity and understanding. Yet, some versions of postmodernism, including some of those currently influential within psychology, eschew the possibility of the kind of understanding-capable personhood on which modern psychology has depended. The authors argue for a skeptical, middle-ground position that might allow psychologists to resist a forced choice between modernism and postmodernism in their subject matter and understanding. The authors set up their argument with 2 stories of human development and change. These stories assume no fixed, essentialist foundations of the sort favored in classically modern psychologies, yet they maintain the possibility of both self and understanding within a real but contingent physical, biological, and sociocultural world. The authors then articulate a middle-ground position as one that avoids the fixed foundationalism, essentialism, and absolute certitude of modernity, without endorsing the radical arbitrariness, antisubjectivism, and anarchistic relativism of some versions of postmodernity. Theoretical orientations of spanish psychotherapists: Integration and eclecticism as modern and postmodern cultural trends.

In this article, we focus on the theoretical orientations of Spanish psychotherapists with reference to the concepts of integration and eclecticism associated respectively with the cultural patterns of modernity and postmodernity. Data are reported from 179 Spanish therapists who responded to the Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire (Orlinsky et al., 1999). The results indicated that these Spanish therapists do not show a tendency toward postmodern eclecticism, suggesting that present clinical practice in Spain still needs high-profile theoretical constructs. Are there commonalties between modern and postmodern philosophies? An examination of the self and knowledge.

Postmodern theories as exemplified by the work of J. F. Lyotard (1984) and K. Gergen (1991) are contrasted with modern theories with regard to their impact on theories of knowledge and of the self. It is argued that while some postmodern theories and the modernists philosophy of individualism are based on assumptions concerning the origins of knowledge and the nature of the self, both result in a relativism of self and knowledge. A postmodern perspective on feminist gerontology

This article argues the need for research in a feminist gerontology that is informed by postmodern and poststructuralist theories. Feminist gerontology is defined and described as part of a larger movement in the field toward critical gerontology. A brief summary of postmodern thought is followed by questions for researchers in gerontology and guidelines for feminist research which is interpretive, interactive, critical, and change-oriented.
