TheAzolla pinnata (Vietnam) inoculated in rice field 10 days after transplanting (DAT) at a rate of 500 kg ha–1 fresh biomass along with phosphorus fertilizer application produced a mat on the water surface at 30 DAT. The three split application of phosphorus as 4.4, 2.2 and 2.2 kg P ha–1 applied at 10, 15 and 20 DAT, respectively produced 67% more biomass and 57% more Nitrogen inAzolla than those obtained by applying 8.8 kg P ha–1 at 10 DAT. Whereas, the two splits of phosphorus as 6.6 and 2.2 kg and 4.4 and 4.4 kg P ha–1 applied 10 and 15 DAT, respectively produced 20 and 33% more biomass and 14 and 27% more Nitrogen only. The three split application of phosphorus also increased the grain and straw yields, panicle number and weight, nitrogen concentration and its uptake in rice significantly over application of the entire amount once only. An increase of 10% grain yield and 13% straw yields was observed when 8.8 kg P ha–1 was applied in three splits rather than applied at one time. On the average an increase of 24% grain and 23% straw yields in rice were observed due toAzolla intercropping and 22% and 16%, respectively due to phosphorus application. The intercropping ofAzolla with rice along with phosphorus application also increased the fertility level of soil by increasing the total nitrogen, organic carbon and available phosphorus of soil.  相似文献

By the year 2020, an additional 300 million tons of rice are needed annually to meet the demands of a growing population. If our natural resource base is to be preserved, intensification strategies should rely on integrated nutrient management, making full use of biological nitrogen fixation. TheAzolla-Anabaena complex is amongst the most effective systems of fixing nitrogen. In this paper we present evidence from greenhouse studies on the potential ofAzolla to curb the volatilization of NH3 following the application of urea to a mixedAzolla-rice culture, providing a new incentive for developing ways of integratingAzolla in intensive rice cultivation systems. The results of a series of short term greenhouse experiments show that a full cover ofAzolla can significantly reduce losses of applied urea-N from 45 and 50% to 20 and 13% for the 30 and 60 kg N ha–1 treatments, respectively. About one-quarter of the applied N was tied up in theAzolla biomass. The applied N inhibitedAzolla growth as well as the amount of N fixed. Inoculation with smaller quantities ofAzolla allowing for more vigorousAzolla multiplication was equally effective in reducing NH3 volatilization and doubled the amount of15N tied-up byAzolla. The reduction in NH3 volatilization is largely related to the depression byAzolla of the floodwater pH, which in its absence may reach values between 9 and 10 as a result of algal activity.Early rice growth responded positively to urea as well as the large quantities of appliedAzolla and increased the yield potential of the crop. Smaller quantities ofAzolla alone were not effective in this regard. The conservation of fertilizer N byAzolla, particularly when it fully covered the water, was reflected in a synergistic effect on rice dry matter production, amounting to 9% at the 30 kg N rate and 16% at the 60 kg N rate. In all likelihood this interaction is attributable to the higher efficiency of the applied N. The benefits ofAzolla in conserving basal urea-N even in small quantities (200-500 kg fresh material ha–1), outweighed competition for the applied N and may be as important as its BNF. The most promising integratedAzolla/rice management systems emerging from our studies should be given further attention under field conditions.  相似文献

The influence of different methods of N fertilizer application-sub-surface placement (SS) and broadcast application (BC) as a single basal dose of 40 kg N ha–1 of urea (U) and ammonium sulphate (AS)-on fresh weight (FW) and acetylene reduction activity (ARA) ofAzolla pinnata (Bangkok) and yield of rice was studied for consecutive three seasons. The FW, ARA and N yield ofAzolla were significantly superior with SS placement than with BC application. Of the two N sources, AS was superior to U in recording higher FW, ARA and N yield of Azolla irrespective of methods of N application. Crop yield and crop N uptake were higher with SS application alone and in combination with Azolla as compared to that of surface application of N fertilizers. The combined use of AS and Azolla recorded significantly higher crop yield and crop N uptake than that of U combined with Azolla, irrespective of methods of application.  相似文献

How environmental factors modify the effect of time of nitrogen application on grain yield and yield components of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were studied under field experiments during the 1975 dry and wet seasons on a fertile Maahas clay soil (an isothermic clayey mixed Aquic Tropudalf). Two rice varieties, one early maturing (IR28) and one medium maturing (IR26), which are highly responsive to nitrogen fertilizer, were tested. These varieties were planted monthly from January through December. Three nitrogen levels were applied in a single or in split doses to examine the maximum nitrogen efficiency under different climatic conditions.Low solar radiation values during the reproductive growth periods of both varieties reduced the spikelet number per unit area. IR26 rice, with an excessive number of spikelets per panicle, was more sensitive to solar radiation. It produced a high percentage of unfilled spikelets at low solar radiation.Nitrogen levels higher than 120 kg N ha–1 were required to obtain maximum grain yields from both varieties under high solar radiation values during the reproductive growth periods. At low solar radiation levels, 60 kg N ha–1 was adequate to get an optimum grain yield with high fertilizer efficiency.Increased grain yields greater than 1.0 t ha–1 were obtained when the nitrogen fertilizer was applied at appropriate times. Proper application minimized the adverse effects of low solar energy.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted for two years on a rapidly percolating loamy sand (Typic Ustochrept) to evaluate the effect of green manure (GM) on the yield,15N recovery from urea applied to flooded rice, the potential for ammonia loss and uptake of residual fertilizer N by succeeding crops. The GM crop ofSesbania aculeata was grownin situ and incorporated one day before transplanting rice. Urea was broadcast in 0.05 m deep floodwater, and incorporated with a harrow. Green manure significantly increased the yield and N uptake by rice and substituted for a minimum of 60 kg fertilizer N ha–1. The recovery of fertilizer N as indicated by15N recovery was higher in the GM + urea treatments. The grain yield and N uptake by succeeding wheat in the rotation was slightly higher with GM. The recovery of residual fertilizer N as indicated by the15N recovery in the second, third and fourth crops of wheat, rice and wheat was only 3, 1 and 1 per cent of the urea fertilizer applied to the preceding rice crop. Floodwater chemistry parameters showed that the combined use of the GM and 40 kg N ha–1 as urea applied at transplanting resulted in a comparatively higher potential for NH3 loss immediately after fertilizer application. The actual ammonia loss as suggested by the15N recoveries in the rice crop, however, did not appear to be appreciably larger in the GM treatment. It appeared the ammonia loss was restricted by low ammoniacal-N concentration maintained in the floodwater after 2 to 3 days of fertilizer application.  相似文献

Brazil has approximately 30 million hectares of lowland areas, known locally as Varzea, but very little is known about their fertility and crop production potential. A field experiment was conducted for three consecutive years to evaluate response of lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown in rotation with common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) on a Varzea (low, Humic Gley) soil. Rice was grown at low (no fertilizer), medium (100 kg N ha–1, 44 kg P ha–1, 50 kg K ha–1, 40 kg FTE-BR 12 ha–1), and high (200 kg N ha–1, 88 kg P ha–1, 100 kg K ha–1, 80 kg FTE-BR 12 ha–1 fritted trace element-Brazil 12 as a source of micronutrients) soil fertility levels. Green manure with medium fertility was also included as an additional treatment. Average dry matter and grain yields of rice and common bean were significantly (P < 0.01) increased with increasing fertilization. Across the three years, rice yield was 4327 kg ha–1 at low fertility, 5523 kg ha–1 at medium fertility, 5465 kg ha–1 at high fertility, and 6332 kg ha–1 at medium fertility with green manure treatment. Similarly, average common bean yield was 294 kg ha–1 at low soil fertility, 663 kg ha–1 at medium soil fertility, 851 kg ha–1 at high fertility, and 823 kg ha–1 at medium fertility with green manure treatment. Significant differences in nutrient uptake in bean were observed for fertility, year, and their interactions; however, these factors were invariably nonsignificant in rice.  相似文献

Green manuring of rice with dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) is widely practised under irrigated puddle-transplanted conditions. In flood-prone lowlands, the rice is established through direct seeding early in the season and flooding occurs after 1–2 months of crop growth following regular rains. The low yields are due to poor crop stands and difficulty in nitrogen management under higher depths of water. The effect of green manuring with dhaincha intercropped with direct-seeded rice vis-à-vis the conventional practice of incorporating pure dhaincha before transplanting was investigated under flood-prone lowland conditions (up to 50–80 cm water depth) at Cuttack, India. Treatment variables studied in different years (1992, 1994 and 1995) were: rice varieties of different plant heights, crop establishment through direct seeding and transplanting, varying length of periods before dhaincha incorporation, and urea N fertilizer levels. Dhaincha accumulated 80–86 kg N ha-1 in pure stand and 58–79 kg N ha-1 when intercropped with direct-seeded rice in alternate rows at 50 days of growth. The growth of rice improved after dhaincha was uprooted manually and buried in situ between the rice rows when water depth was 10–20 cm in the field. The panicle number was lower but the panicle weight was higher with dhaincha green manuring than with recommended level of 40 kg N ha-1 applied as urea. The grain yield was significantly higher with direct seeding than with transplanting due to high water levels (>60 cm) immediately after transplanting. Dhaincha manuring was at par with 40 kg N ha-1 as urea in increasing the yield of direct-seeded and transplanted crops. The highest yield of direct-seeded crop was obtained when 20 kg N ha-1 was applied at sowing and dhaincha was incorporated at 50 days of growth. The results indicate that green manuring of direct-seeded rice with intercropped dhaincha is beneficial for substituting urea fertilizer up to 40 kg N ha-1 and augmenting crop productivity under flood-prone lowland conditions.  相似文献

The quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supplied by an average African soil cleared from bush fallow, assuming no losses, were approximated. Values ranged from 23 to 120 Kg N ha–1, 1.8 to 12 Kg P ha–1, 47 to 187 Kg K ha–1, depending on type of fallow, length of fallow, drainage and extent of depletion of native supplies. Additional amounts of 4 to 5 Kg N ha–1, 4 to 6 Kg P ha–1 and 14 to 20 Kg K ha–1 are obtained from the ash.Using crop nutrient removal data and approximate efficiencies of native and fertilizer N, P and K, fertilizer requirements at the reconnaissance level were estimated for selected target yields. For newly cleared uplands at cropping/fallow ratio of 2:7, N fertilizer requirements for cassava (30 t ha–1), maize (4 t ha–1), and sweet potato (16 t ha–1), were 138, 98, 42 kg ha–1 respectively. Wetland rice (4 t ha–1) required 55 kg N ha–1. Corresponding P fertilizer requirements for cassava, maize, sweet potato, upland rice (1.5 t ha–1) and ground-nut (1 t ha–1) were 190, 80, 30, 30 and 16 kg P ha–1 respectively. Wetland rice required 83 kg P ha–1. Substantial residual values of applied P are to be expected. Cassava required 60 kg ha–1 of K on newly cleared land. In soils of lowered nutrient status higher N, P, and K fertilizer requirements were indicated for all crops.Land use data from Sierra Leone were used to illustrate how the total quantities of N, P and K fertilizers in a country in the forest zone of Africa can be approximated. Fertilizer needs in Sierra Leone were in decreasing order P > N K. N, P and K requirements were estimated to be 10,000 t, 20,000 t and 4,000 t respectively. The nutrient balance sheet method described in this paper is a useful tool to estimate the order of magnitude of fertilizer requirement at selected target yields for countries in Africa.  相似文献

Sixteen experiments were carried out on maincrop potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) in the main growing areas of the United Kingdom to compare broadcast, sideband placed and split applications of compound fertilizer. In experiments without irrigation, yield increased up to about 1250 kg ha–1 of compound fertilizer (N:P:K 15:6.6:15.8 or 15:8.3:15.8), while with full irrigation there was a response to at least 1875 kg ha–1. Placement gave a higher yield than broadcast at 625 kg ha–1, while at 1250 kg ha–1 and 1875 kg ha–1 broadcast, placed and split applications gave similar yields.  相似文献

Mineral fertilizer use is increasing in West Africa though little information is available on yield response in farmers' fields. Farmers in this region plant at low density (average 5,000 pockets ha–1, 3 plants pocket–1), which can affect fertilizer use efficiency. A study was conducted with 20 farmers in Niger to assess the response of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] to phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers under farm conditions. In each field, treatments included control, single superphosphate (SSP) only, SSP plus N (point placed near plant), and either SSP or partially acidulated phosphate rock (PAPR) plus N broadcast. N and P were applied at 30 kg N ha–1 and 30 kg P2O5 ha–1. Farmers were allowed to plant, weed, etc., as they wished and they planted at densities ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 pockets ha–1. In the absence of fertilizer, increasing density from 2,000 to 7,000 pockets ha–1 increased yield by 400%. A strong interaction was found between fertilizer use and density. Farmers planting at densities less than 3,500 pockets ha–1 had average yields of 317 kg grain ha–1 while those planting at densities higher than 6,500 pockets ha–1 showed average yields of 977 grain ha–1. Though phosphate alone increased yields significantly at all densities, little response to fertilizer N was found at densities below 6,000 pockets ha–1. Significant residual responses in 1987 and 1988 were found to P applied in high-density plots in 1986. Depending on fertilizer and grain prices, analysis showed that fertilizer use must be be combined with high plant density (10,000 pockets ha–1) or no economic benefit from fertilizer use will be realized.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted during the 1980–82 seasons to study the response dryland sorghum to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in a ferruginous tropical soil. Treatments tested were factorial combinations of three rates of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha–1) and four rates of phosphorus (0, 11, 22 and 33 kg P ha–1). Grain and straw yields and yield components were enhanced by nitrogen fertilization in two out of three years. The optimum N rate for grain yield was 60 kg N ha–1 while straw yield responded up to 120 kg N ha–1. The optimum P rate for dryland sorghum was 11 kg P ha–1. Both N and P enhanced grain weight per head, grain number, test weight and tillering significantly but it was only N which enhanced 1000-grain weight and flag leaf area. Dry matter productin was increased by N fertilization but not by P. There were no significant N × P interactions for any of the parameters studied. Dryland sorghum response to N and P fertilization was influenced by season, time of planting and rainfall distribution.  相似文献

Researches on the mineral nutrition and fertilizer response of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) carried out during the last 25 years in India are reviewed here. In general, N,P,K, Fe and Mn concentrations in vegetative plant parts decreased with crop age, while the concentrations of Ca, Mg and Cu increased. The concentration of N and P increased in panicle or grains of sorghum with advance in crop age. The seasonal change for other nutrients has not, however, been studied.Accumulation and uptake of N,P, and K by grain sorghum were characterized. Usually N and P accumulated slowly compared with the rapid accumulation of K in early crop growth stage and vice-versa in later stages of growth. As against the sizable mass of N and P into panicle, K was partitioned into stalk.Fertilizer responses to N and P were observed throughout India. Improved varieties and hybrids of sorghum responded to N rates ranging from 60 to 150 kg N ha–1, whereas a response to P application was observed up to 40 kg P ha–1. Although responses to K application had been inconsistent, an increase in grain yield of sorghum was observed due to 33 kg K ha–1. A balanced fertilizer schedule consisting of 120 kg N ha–1, 26 kg P ha–1, 33 kg K ha–1 and 15–25 kg Zn504 ha–1 is recommended for improved productivity of grain sorghum. It is concluded that systematic research efforts should be directed so as to identify problem soils showing deficiencies and toxicities of different nutrients. Characterization of the seasonal changes in the concentration and uptake of different nutrients and determination of critical concentration and hidden hunger of different nutrients in plant tissues would lead to the recommendation of balanced fertilization for different sorghum-growing regions in India.A part of the paper presented in the Silver Jubliee Conference of Indian Society of Agronomy held at H.A.U., Hissar (India) in March, 1981  相似文献

Dry-seeded delayed-flooded rice in Italy is important in some areas with high sand content. The effects of N application timing and rates on grain yield, milling yield, plant height, total biomass, harvest index (HI) and crop N content were evaluated for dry-seeded delayed-flooded rice in Italy to increase the N use efficiency and to study N fertilizer recommendations. Two widely grown non-semi-dwarf varieties were studied: Drago and Loto. Three N rates were used: 60, 120 and 180 kg N ha–1. For each rate the fertilizer was applied in seven splits across three growth stages: pre-sowing, pre-flooding and panicle differentiation. Drago produced higher yields and N application at all stages increased yield. Late N application caused the development of secondary sterile tillers, decreasing harvest index. Loto responded to earlier N applications but not to late N applications. In contrast with other trials outside Italy, pre-plant N fertilization was effective in increasing yield. Brown rice and total milled rice yields were higher for Loto. Increasing the applied N rate increased the head rice yield range. With low N no low values were recorded and variation between splits was small. With high N the highest head yield was observed with split application. Height was significantly affected by N rate and split, with a range of 65 to 92 cm and 54 to 86 cm for Drago and Loto, respectively. N application at tillering was more effective. N rate and split affected biomass and decreased HI. Crop N content at maturity was affected by late N application and by total applied fertilizer. N content in the panicle showed lower variation with N split and rate and was negatively correlated with yield. At 120 and 180 kg N ha–1 all nitrogen applied pre-flooding gave good results in both sites, but the best results were obtained with N split at pre-sowing and pre-flooding, with low yield increase moving from 120 to 180 kg N ha–1. We recommend late N applications for Drago (medium-late variety), but not for Loto (early variety).  相似文献

Intercropping perennials with corn has the potential to improve utilization of the growing season over monocropping corn in regions where a substantial portion of the growing season is too cool for corn growth. The biomass potential and fertilizer N requirements of monocropped corn (Zea mays) grown using conventional tillage were compared with those of corn intercropped with alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in 1987 and 1988. The intercropped alfalfa was harvested once prior to planting the corn each spring. Rotation effects on and N fertilizer requirements for monocropped corn following these treatments and also following monocropped alfalfa, were evaluated in 1989 and 1990. During the two years of intercropping for which data is presented, the critical intercropped corn biomass (13.05 Mg ha–1) estimated using a quadratic-plus plateau model, was close to the monocropped corn biomass (13.01 Mg ha–1), but an estimated 83 kg ha–1 more N was required for intercropped corn to reach the critical biomass. Total biomass (intercropped corn and alfalfa) was 25% greater than that of the monocropped corn, and the total N uptake was 55% greater than that by monocropped corn over the two- year period. After rotation to monocropped corn using conventional tillage in 1989, corn biomass averaged over N rates following intercropping or monocropped corn was lower (P=0.01) than following monocropped alfalfa. Critical corn biomass estimated was highest following alfalfa and lowest following monocropped corn, and more N fertilizer was required to attain the critical biomass under continuous monocropped corn in 1989. Corn yields and N uptake values in 1990 were not significantly different among the cropping systems. The N fertilizer replacement values due to intercropping decreased from above 90 kg N ha–1 in the first year of rotation to less than 40 kg N ha–1 in the second year of rotation. Considering the higher potential for total biomass production and rotation benefit, intercropping is a viable alternative to conventional corn monoculture for forage production.  相似文献

Nitrogen response of maize under temporary flooding   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adverse effect of temporary flooding on maize (Zea mays L.) yields and the nitrogen management required to mitigate the effect of flooding were studied for five years in field experiments on Choa sandy loam soil.Maize yields decreased with increase in duration of flooding and with decrease in the age of the crop at the time of flooding. Flooding periods exceeding 48 hours caused significant crop damage. The loss in yield on account of flooding was, however, less in 40-day old crops. A 24 hours flooding decreased grain yield by 17.7 and 3.9 per cent in 20-day and 40-day old crops respectively. Maximum yield loss amounted to 1.23 t ha–1 of grains with 72 hours of flooding of 20-day old crop indicating that a younger crop is more prone to the deleterious effect of flooding. The nitrogen content of grains decreased significantly with increase in flooding period. A supplemental dose of 7 kg N ha–1 as urea spray significantly increased grain yield. Soil application of supplemental nitrogen at the rate of 14 or 20 kg N ha–1 enhanced the maize yield by 0.7 to 0.9 t ha–1 under temporary flooded conditions. Spraying with urea solution increased nitrogen removed by the crop.Successive increments of 60 kg N ha–1 gave an additional yields of 1.23, 1.01 and 0.41 t ha–1 over the crop that received no nitrogen. Flooded maize responded to even higher rates of N fertilization than the dose of 120 kg N ha–1 which is recommended in this region.  相似文献

Experiment with different split applications of 40 kg N ha–1 of urea (U) at transplanting:30 days after transplanting:40 days before crop maturity with different proportions of 50:25:25, 25:50:25 and 0:50:50 splits, with and without Azolla, carried out for two consecutive seasons, revealed that fresh weight (FW), N2-fixation measured by acetylene reduction activity (ARA) and N yield of newly introducedAzolla caroliniana were higher with 0:50:50 treatment followed by 25:50:25 and 50:25:25.Azolla was unincorporated and left for self decomposition. The crop yield (grain yield, straw yield) and crop N uptake data indicated that among the no Azolla treatments, the use of 50:25:25 split resulted in highest crop yield and crop N uptake followed by 25:50:25 and 0:50:50 treatments, while these parameters recorded maximum value with 25:50:25 split in combination with Azolla followed by 50:25:25 and 0:50:50 treatments. The use of Azolla increased crop yield and crop N uptake significantly over no Azolla treatments.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted in the Philippines and India during 1989 and 1990 seasons to study comparative yield responses of transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L.) to pillow-shaped urea briquettes (UB) deep placed by an applicator (prototype developed by IFDC) and by hand immediately after transplanting. The applicator-placed UB consistently increased grain yields over the split-applied prilled urea, and the additional yields ranged from 0.23 to 1.48t ha–1 (5 to 83%) for 25 to 63 kg N ha–1. Agronomic responses of transplanted rice to the UB placed by the applicator and by hand were statistically equal. Modified rice hill spacing may be considered as a requirement for efficient use of the applicator. The results demonstrate that with the UB applicator it is possible to deep place UB mechanically and achieve the agronomic efficiency that is achieved by hand deep placement of the UB.  相似文献

This study consisted of a survey on the nutritional status of rice plants in relation to nutrient application and yield in 70 farmers' fields in four provinces of Bangkok plain during the 1977 wet season. In addition a series of fertilizer experiments were carried out on rice experimental stations in the same provinces to study yield response to N and P fertilization and to develop a fertilizer recommendation system based on plant analysis. The average grain yield in the survey was 3.2 t ha–1 and the early (high yielding varieties), medium (local) and late maturity (local) types yielded 3.3, 2.8 and 3.0 t ha–1, respectively. The average amount of fertilizers applied to these maturity types were 33, 15 and 7 kg N ha–1 and 15, 8 and 6 kg P ha–1, respectively. Regression analysis indicated only a slight correlation between yield and any level of fertilizer application. On experimental stations yields over 6 t ha–1 were obtained with applications of N over 100 kg ha–1 and P over 22 kg ha–1. Evaluation of nutritional status of plants based on plant analysis showed that in all provinces there were strong and widespread nutrient deficiences primarily of N and secondarily of P, and possibly of some other nutrients. Fertilizer application based on plant analysis gave high yield responses. It was concluded that the major constraints of yield on Bangkok plain are too low fertilizer application especially of N, and unbalanced fertilization of N and P.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted during two consecutive wet seasons in flooded rice (Oryza sativa L.) to determine the effect of green manure on urea utilization in a rice-fallow-rice cropping sequence. Replicated plots were fertilized with 60 to 120 kg of urea N ha–1 in three split applications (50, 25 and 25%) with or without incorporation of dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata L.) (100 kg N ha–1). During the first crop only 31 to 44% of the urea added was used by the rice. Incorporatingin situ grown dhaincha (GM) into the soil at transplanting had little effect on urea utilization. Forty-four to 54% of the N added was not recovered in the soil, rice crop, or as nitrate leachate during the first cropping season. Incorporation of GM had no effect on fertilizer N recovery. Only about 2% of the urea N added to the first rice crop was taken up by the second rice crop and, as in the first crop, the GM had little effect on residual N, either in amount or utilization.  相似文献

Fertigation versus broadcasting in an orange grove   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A long-term experiment was carried out in a mature orange grove comparing broadcasting versus continuous application of nitrogen at three rates (80, 160, 280 kg ha–1), 22 kg P ha–1 and 126 kg K ha–1 annually. The trees were irrigated with minispriklers wetting 70% of the soil area. The level of NO3-N in the leaves varied according to the rate of N application. Leaf K and P content were not affected by fertilization. High N applications caused excess N in the soil solution. The rate of N application did not affect orange yield, fruit size or quality. Fertigation at 160 kg N ha–1 caused higher yields than when the same amount of fertilizer was broadcast. At the high application rate, no differences between modes of application were found. This study was initiated by A. Bar-Akiva, who died suddenly early in 1986.
