The current study sought to investigate and analyze citation‐based trends in the field of human factors and ergonomics over a relatively long period of time. Journals were selected from the Ergonomics Journal List (EJL), originally formulated by Dul and Karwowski in 2004. Data were extracted from the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports via a custom order in 2008. Various bibliometric indicators were examined and analyzed, including total citation counts, cited half‐lives, immediacy indices, and journal impact factors. Overall, the results suggest that, although citation counts have increased in recent years, trends were less clear regarding cited half‐lives and immediacy indices. Impact factors rose over time, however, with individual journals increasing their scores between 200% and 613%, with an overall increase of 416% for the EJL between 1975 and 2007. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A method for selecting and rating scientific and professional journals representing the discipline of ergonomics and human factors is proposed. The method is based upon the journal list, impact factors and citations provided by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), and the journal list published in the Ergonomics Abstracts. Three groups of journals were distinguished. The 'ergonomics journals' focus exclusively on ergonomics and human factors. The 'related journals' focus on other disciplines than ergonomics and human factors, but regularly publish ergonomics/human factors papers. The 'basic journals' focus on other technical, medical or social sciences than ergonomics, but are important for the development of ergonomics/human factors. Journal quality was rated using a maximum of four categories: top quality (A-level), high quality (B-level), good quality (C-level)) and professional (P-level). The above methods were applied to develop the Ergonomics Journal List 2004. A total of 25 'ergonomics journals', 58 'related journals' and 142 'basic journals' were classified.  相似文献

Sustainability is a global issue that has worldwide attention but the role of ergonomics in designing for sustainability is poorly understood and seldom considered. An analysis of the literature on ergonomics, design and sustainability was conducted via a search of electronic databases: Scopus, Business Source Complete, Google Scholar, Emerald Publishing, Academic Search Premiere, Web of Science, Discover and Ergonomics Abstracts, for the years 1995–2012. A total of 1934 articles fulfilled the search criteria, but content analysis of the abstracts indicated that only 14 refereed articles addressed the main search criteria. Of those seven were in ergonomics journals and seven were in other journals (and were not written by ergonomists). It is concluded that the contribution of ergonomics to sustainability and sustainable design has been limited, even though the goals of sustainability and ergonomics are congruent. Ergonomists have not been at the forefront of research contributing to sustainability – and it is time for them to ‘seize the day’ – ‘carpe diem’.

Practitioner Summary: This literature review shows that ergonomics contribution to sustainability is limited but since there is congruence between the disciplines it calls for ergonomists to become more involved and to seize the day – carpe diem.  相似文献

The following abstracts are of work of ergonomic interest which have appeared in other journals and research reports. They are a selection from the quarterl‘Ergonomics Abstracts’ which is published by the Ergonomics Information Analysis Centre, Department of Engineering Production, University of Birmingham, England. This journal offers a comprehensive annotated bibliography of current ergonomics publications. By special arrangement, its contents, printed on unbound adhesive backed sheets, are available at reduced rates to members of national ergonomics and human factors societies on application to the Centre. Selections of the information in the Centre's continuing collection, currently totalling some 64,000 abstracts, are available through special bibliographies prepared on request, and may cover any of the recognized subject headings in the field of ergonomics.  相似文献

Technology offers a promising route to a sustainable future, and ergonomics can serve a vital role. The argument of this article is that the lasting success of sustainability initiatives in ergonomics hinges on an examination of ergonomics’ own epistemology and ethics. The epistemology of ergonomics is fundamentally empiricist and positivist. This places practical constraints on its ability to address important issues such as sustainability, emergence and complexity. The implicit ethical position of ergonomics is one of neutrality, and its positivist epistemology generally puts value-laden questions outside the parameters of what it sees as scientific practice. We argue, by contrast, that a discipline that deals with both technology and human beings cannot avoid engaging with questions of complexity and emergence and seeking innovative ways of addressing these issues.

Practitioner Summary: Ergonomics has largely modelled its research on a reductive science, studying parts and problems to fix. In sustainability efforts, this can lead to mere local adaptations with a negative effect on global sustainability. Ergonomics must consider quality of life globally, appreciating complexity and emergent effects of local relationships.  相似文献

Biblio is an adaptive system that automatically extracts meta-data from semi-structured and structured scanned documents. Instead of using hand-coded templates or other methods manually customized for each given document format, it uses example-based machine learning to adapt to customer-defined document and meta-data types. We provide results from experiments on the recognition of document information in two document corpuses: a set of scanned journal articles and a set of scanned legal documents. The first set is semi-structured, as the different journals use a variety of flexible layouts. The second set is largely free-form text based on poor quality scans of FAX-quality legal documents. We demonstrate accuracy on the semi-structured document set roughly comparable to hand-coded systems, and much worse performance on the legal documents.  相似文献

The International Journal of Intelligent Systems was created in 1986. Today, the journal is 30 years old. To celebrate this anniversary, this study develops a bibliometric review of all of the papers published in the journal between 1986 and 2015. The results are largely based on the Web of Science Core Collection, which classifies leading bibliographic material by using several indicators including total number of publications and citations, the h‐index, cites per paper, and citing articles. The work also uses the VOS viewer software for visualizing the main results through bibliographic coupling and co‐citation. The results show a general overview of leading trends that have influenced the journal in terms of highly cited papers, authors, journals, universities and countries.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper represents an effort to establish an inter-disciplinary field of research toward total educational effectiveness. The traditional educational delivery lacks any systems perspective and precision. The application of ergonomics to education has received only limited attention. A systems analysis has identified 5 components for educational ergonomics: (1) learning ergonomics, (2) instructional ergonomics, (3) orgonomics of educational facilities, (4) ergonomics of educational oqutpment, and (5) the ergonomics of educational environment.

Learning ergonomics explores such areas as educational skills of handwriting, roading, drawing, instrument manipulation, class scheduling and school scheduling, research in examinations, management of learning activities, and grading systems. The instructional ergonomics covers textbook design, teaching devices, instruction techniques, classroom conducts, lecture preparation, and educational T.V. Ergonomics of educational facilities concerns educational furniture, laboratory and library ergonomics, classroom and office design, and equipment allocation. Ergonomics of education equipment investigates needs analysis, C/D design, allocation of equipment, performance analyses, and its safety and construction. Ergonomics of educational environment includes such things as illumination, colour, noise, space utilization, and allocation of equipment. Within each variable, research is reviewed and typical studies are suggested. The value of an integrated discipline of educational ergonomics is also discussed.  相似文献

This paper provided a content analysis of studies in the field of cognition in e-learning that were published in five Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) journals (i.e. Computers and Education, British Journal of Educational Technology, Innovations in Education and Teaching International, Educational Technology Research & Development, and Journal of Computer Assisted Learning) from 2001 to 2005. Among the 1027 articles published in these journals from 2001 to 2005, 444 articles were identified as being related to the topic of cognition in e-learning. These articles were cross analyzed by published years, journal, research topic, and citation count. Furthermore, 16 highly-cited articles across different topics were chosen for further analysis according to their research settings, participants, research design types, and research methods. It was found from the analysis of the 444 articles that “Instructional Approaches,” “Learning Environment,” and “Metacognition” were the three most popular research topics, but the analysis of the citation counts suggested that the studies related to “Instructional Approaches,” “Information Processing” and “Motivation” might have a greater impact on subsequent research. Although the use of questionnaires might still be the main method of gathering research data in e-learning cognitive studies, a clear trend was observed that more and more studies were utilizing learners’ log files or online messages as data sources for analysis. The results of the analysis provided insights for educators and researchers into research trends and patterns of cognition in e-learning.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to determine the influence of multisensory (visual-haptic) integration and the level of interaction (seeing photographs, seeing the actual product, touching it and using it) on the perception of products, including perceived ergonomics. The product selected for the experiment was the hammer, as this will help to establish whether emotional design studies can also apply to ‘commercial’ products. Subjective opinions of users were evaluated through semantic differential tests. A factor analysis identified six semantic factors or axes (Quality/Robustness, Ergonomics/Appearance, Innovation, Lightness, Dynamic Effects, and Efficacy). Results show that Lightness and Dynamic Effects are quite sensitive to the level of interaction, while Ergonomics/Appearance is partially affected. However, the perceptions of Innovation, Quality/Robustness and Efficacy are not so affected and they could be detected through a lower level of interaction (i.e. seeing photographs). This suggests that commercial products seem sensitive to emotional design studies and that multisensory integration enhances the perception of the factors that are clearly linked with physical interaction between users and tools, i.e. Ergonomics/Appearance, Lightness and Dynamic Effects. Additionally, it should be highlighted that some aspects related with the ergonomics and ease of use of products are also perceived at different stages of interaction.  相似文献

Nowadays, the combination of “Nanotechnology” and “Ergonomics” has been known as “Nano-ergonomics.” Nano-ergonomics can help to develop more comfortable conditions in workplaces. So, the aim of this study is to reveal benefits of nanotechnology for occupational health and safety design, especially ergonomic design. The search strategy was provided based on cochrane guidelines with main search terms of “Nanotechnology,” “Nanomaterial,” and “Nanoparticle” combined with “Ergonomics” and “Human Factors.” PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences and Google Scholar Databases were researched for relevant articles. Also, Google search engine was used to find nano-ergonomic commercial products and to complete the research with identifying additional information. A total of 32 articles were first achieved. By providing Synthesis Without Meta-analysis reporting guideline, finally, four studies were regarded as appropriate. The results showed that nanotechnology has developed in three major areas of ergonomics such as physical, environmental, and cognitive ergonomics, which is a positive step toward more protection of workers' health. Although, there are not any original article related to nanotechnology for ergonomic product design, they are offered as the commercial products by the largest companies such as Amazon. Also, workers at the nanotechnology-related industries have the challenges of exposure to toxic nanomaterials. So, before the application of nanomaterials, we should have proper knowledge of nanomaterials-caused toxic hazards and how to handle them.  相似文献

Creating rankings of academic journals is an important but contentious issue. It is of especial interest in the U.K. at this time (2007) as we are only one year away from getting the results of the next Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the importance of which, for U.K. universities, can hardly be overstated. The purpose of this paper is to present a journal ranking for business and management based on a statistical analysis of the Harzing data set which contains 13 rankings. The primary aim of the analysis is two-fold – to investigate relationships between the different rankings, including that between peer rankings and citation behaviour; and to develop a ranking based on four groups that could be useful for the RAE. Looking at the different rankings, the main conclusions are that there is in general a high degree of conformity between them as shown by a principal components analysis. Cluster analysis is used to create four groups of journals relevant to the RAE. The higher groups are found to correspond well with previous studies of top management journals and also gave, unlike them, equal coverage to all the management disciplines. The RAE Business and Management panel have a huge and unenviable task in trying to judge the quality of over 10,000 publications and they will inevitably have to resort to some standard mechanistic procedures to do so. This work will hopefully contribute by producing a ranking based on a statistical analysis of a variety of measures.  相似文献

Abstract

The benefits for the consumer, and for the practising ergonomist of implementing a marketing strategy designed to increase consumer awareness of ergonomics is discussed with reference to the experiences of ICE Ergonomics, a commercial ergonomics research and consultancy organization based in Great Britain. The marketing strategy, which addresses the areas of publicity, education and practical involvement, forms one part of an integrated marketing strategy now being implemented by ICE.  相似文献

Given that journal impact factors now represent such a “hot” topic in the modern scientific world, it is essential that ergonomists remain fully cognizant of the citation‐based research that has been conducted in our field. This article reviews and examines bibliometric research in the ergonomics profession, ranging from seminal work on content analysis and citation indexing, to some of the latest research describing ergonomics journal lists and longitudinal impact factor trends. Overall, history has shown how citation‐based studies have become increasingly common in the ergonomics field during the past few decades, and, as we move through the 21st century, ergonomics journals continue to mature as a result. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: I evaluate the contribution of a pioneering Human Factors special issue on human factors in industrial systems. BACKGROUND: Papers on the content of the journal's first 10 years showed that industrial human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) in 1969 was quite a rarity in the journal and the society. METHOD: The 12 papers in the special issue are reviewed briefly and show a wide range of topics, including traditional industrial engineering, physical HF/E, and more mainstream applications of HF/E in this domain similar to those in military and aerospace domains. The evaluation is through citations, later journal content, society technical group membership, and specific influences of Harris's own paper in the issue. RESULTS: The expected direct citation influence of this special issue was not found: Citation counts were in line with all papers in Human Factors. However, other journals have been founded in North America that serve industrial HF/E and provide an outlet for more papers per year than Human Factors. In addition, the industrial domain is well represented in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Finally, Harris's paper has been influential in the specific area of HF/E in inspection. CONCLUSIONS: Industrial HF/E is now more accepted within the HF/E community, although largely in the physical ergonomics subspecialty. APPLICATION: There is now evidence of use of HF/E techniques more broadly in industry, including service as well manufacturing enterprises.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to describe how and why ergonomics should be promoted in total quality management (TQM). Ergonomics and TQM activities are compared. An approach is proposed to apply ergonomics in TQM using ergonomics circles. An eight-step approach is introduced for applying ergonomics using ergonomics circles and a study that employed this approach in Korea is discussed. In applying this approach, all processes were first evaluated by workers. Processes that were identified as problematic were analysed by a company-wide committee to set priorities for improvement. An ergonomics improvement team consisting of safety and health personnel, process engineers and management innovation personnel then worked on the processes using a low-cost approach. It was found that applying ergonomics using ergonomics circles as quality circles in TQM was effective in improving workplaces and resulted in increasing productivity, cost saving and improved safety.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper (which is based on the presidential address to the Annual Meeting of the Ergonomics Society of Australia and New Zealand, at Melbourne University on 19 August 1971) is to consider ways in which ergonomics could contribute to the quality, even maintenance, of life, and to consider the need and justification for ergonomics to adopt this role. The author discusses society unhealth, environmental degradation, drug abuse and death as examples of social issues in which ergonomics could be applied with advantage. He concludes that ergonomics has much to contribute, and responsibility to contribute, to the quality of living, particularly in bringing and interdisciplinary and scientific approach to such issues, whose improvement is presently hindered by uninformed enthusiasm, prejudice, sectional interests and apathy.  相似文献
