The latent thermal energy storage system of the shell-and-tube type during charging and discharging has been analysed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of transient forced convective heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) with moderate Prandtl numbers and the tube wall, heat conduction through the wall and solid–liquid phase change of the phase change material (PCM), based on the enthalpy formulation, has been presented. A fully implicit two-dimensional control volume Fortran computer code, with algorithm for non-isothermal phase transition, has been developed for the solution of the corresponding mathematical model. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows good agreement for both paraffin non-isothermal melting and isothermal solidification. In order to provide guidelines for system performance and design optimisation, unsteady temperature distributions of the HTF, tube wall and the PCM have been obtained by a series of numerical calculations for various HTF working conditions and various geometric parameters, and the thermal behaviour of the latent thermal energy storage unit during charging and discharging has been simulated.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed review of effect of phase change material (PCM) encapsulation on the performance of a thermal energy storage system (TESS). The key encapsulation parameters, namely, encapsulation size, shell thickness, shell material and encapsulation geometry have been investigated thoroughly. It was observed that the core-to-coating ratio plays an important role in deciding the thermal and structural stability of the encapsulated PCM. An increased core-to-coating ratio results in a weak encapsulation, whereas, the amount of PCM and hence the heat storage capacity decreases with a decreased core-to-coating ratio. Thermal conductivity of shell material found to have a significant influence on the heat exchange between the PCM and heat transfer fluid (HTF). This paper also reviews the solidification and melting characteristics of the PCM and the effect of various encapsulation parameters on the phase change behavior. It was observed that a higher thermal conductivity of shell material, a lower shell size and high temperature of HTF results in rapid melting of the encapsulated PCM. Conduction and natural convection found to be dominant during solidification and melt processes, respectively. A significant enhancement in heat transfer was observed with microencapsulated phase change slurry (MPCS) due to direct surface contact between the encapsulated PCM and the HTF. It was reported that the pressure drop and viscosity increases substantially with increase in volumetric concentration of the microcapsules.  相似文献

In this study, a feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm is proposed for heat transfer analysis of phase change process in a finned-tube, latent heat thermal energy storage system. Heat storage through phase change material (PCM) around the finned tube is experimentally studied. A numerical study is performed to investigate the effect of fin and flow parameter by the solving governing equations for the heat transfer fluid, pipe wall and phase change material. Learning process is applied to correlate the total heat stored in different fin types of tubes, various Reynolds numbers and different inlet temperatures. A number of hidden numbers of ANN are trained for the best output prediction of the heat storage. The predicted total heat storage values obtained by an ANN model with extensive sets of non-training experimental data are then compared with experimental measurements and numerical results. The trained ANN model with an absolute mean relative error of 5.58% shows good performance to predict the total amount of heat stored. The ANN results are found to be more accurate than the numerical model results. The present study using ANN approach for heat transfer analysis in phase change heat storage process appears to be significant for practical thermal energy storage applications.  相似文献

The charging and discharging rates of a phase change material (PCM) in a horizontal latent heat storage unit (LHSU) is largely influenced by the lower thermal conductivity of the PCM. In the present research, four different configurations of longitudinal fins are proposed to augment the heat transfer in horizontal shell and tube type LHSUs. Numerical investigations are reported to establish the thermal performance augmentation with rectangular, triangular, and Y‐shaped (bifurcated) fins. From the results, it has been inferred that all fin configurations provide a faster charging and discharging rate. In the present set of geometric dimensions of LHSU considered, a reduction in charging time of 68.71% is evaluated for case III (three rectangular fins with one fin positioned in the area of the heat transfer fluid [HTF] surface) and case V (two bifurcated fins with one fin positioned in the area of the HTF surface). Moreover, overall cycle (charging + discharging) time is reduced by 58.3% for case III. Employment of fins results in a faster rate of absorption and extraction of energy from the PCM.  相似文献

A numerical and experimental investigation of phase change process dominated by heat conduction in a thermal storage unit is presented in this paper. The thermal energy storage involves a shell and tube arrangement where paraffin wax as phase change material (PCM) is filled in the shell. Water as heat transfer fluid (HTF) is passed inside the tube for both charging and discharging cycles. According to the conservation of energy, a simple numerical method called alternative iteration between thermal resistance and temperature has been developed for the analysis of heat transfer between the PCM and HTF during charging and discharging cycles. Experimental arrangement has been designed and built to examine the physical validity of the numerical results. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows a good agreement. A detailed parametric study is also carried out for various flow parameters and system dimensions such as different mass flow rates, inlet temperatures of HTF, tube thicknesses and radii. Numerical study reveals that the contribution of the inlet temperature of HTF has much influence than mass flow rate in terms of storage operating time and HTF outlet temperature. Tube radius is a more important parameter than thickness for better heat transfer between HTF and PCM.  相似文献

An experimental analysis is presented to establish the thermal performance of a latent heat thermal storage (LHTS) unit. Paraffin is used as the phase change material (PCM) on the shell side of the shell and tube‐type LHTS unit while water is used as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flowing through the inner tube. The fluid inlet temperature and the mass flow rate of HTF are varied and the temperature distribution of paraffin in the shell side is measured along the radial and axial direction during melting and solidification process. The total melting time is established for different mass flow rates and fluid inlet temperature of HTF. The motion of the solid–liquid interface of the PCM with time along axial and radial direction of the test unit is critically evaluated. The experimental results indicate that the melting front moves from top to bottom along the axial direction while the solidification front moves only in the radial direction. The total melting time of PCM increases as the mass flow rate and inlet temperature of HTF decreases. A correlation is proposed for the dimensionless melting time in terms of Reynolds number and Stefan number of HTF. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase change and heat transfer characteristics of a eutectic mixture of palmitic and stearic acids as phase change material (PCM) during the melting and solidification processes were determined experimentally in a vertical two concentric pipes energy storage system. This study deals with three important subjects. First is determination of the eutectic composition ratio of the palmitic acid (PA) and stearic acid (SA) binary system and measurement of its thermophysical properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Second is establishment of the phase transition characteristics of the mixture, such as the total melting and solidification temperatures and times, the heat transfer modes in the melted and solidified PCM and the effect of Reynolds and Stefan numbers as initial heat transfer fluid (HTF) conditions on the phase transition behaviors. Third is calculation of the heat transfer coefficients between the outside wall of the HTF pipe and the PCM, the heat recovery rates and heat fractions during the phase change processes of the mixture and also discussion of the effect of the inlet HTF parameters on these characteristics. The DSC results showed that the PA–SA binary system in the mixture ratio of 64.2:35.8 wt% forms a eutectic, which melts at 52.3 °C and has a latent heat of 181.7 J g−1, and thus, these properties make it a suitable PCM for passive solar space heating and domestic water heating applications with respect to climate conditions. The experimental results also indicated that the eutectic mixture of PA–SA encapsulated in the annulus of concentric double pipes has good phase change and heat transfer characteristics during the melting and solidification processes, and it is an attractive candidate as a potential PCM for heat storage in latent heat thermal energy storage systems.  相似文献

The use of a heat exchanger using phase change material (PCM) is an example of latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES). In this study, the charging of PCM (RT50) is studied in a double pipe heat exchanger. The designing of the heat exchanger needs to be optimized for operating and boundary conditions to store latent heat efficiently. The size of the equipment and the amount of PCM are also important to calculate the latent heat storage capacity of the LHTES device. In this study, the amount of PCM taken is quite high to avoid sensible heat transfer and to maximize the heat content of PCM. The charging process of PCM is numerically simulated using an enthalpy-porosity model. The study includes the effect of inlet temperature and flow rate of high-temperature-fluid (HTF) and concludes that both play an important role in determining the charging time. The continuous increase in inlet temperature of HTF can decrease the charging time of PCM in the heat exchanger. However, the continuous increase in the HTF flow rate cannot show the same effect. The charging time can only be minimized with a specified flow rate regime for a specific inlet temperature of HTF. These factors consequently affect the efficiency of the heat exchanger.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage units that utilize latent heat storage materials have received increased attention in the recent years because of their relatively large heat storage capacities and isothermal behavior during charging and discharging. In this study, an analytical approach is presented for the prediction of temperature during the solidification in a two-dimensional rectangular latent heat storage using a phase change material (PCM) with internal plate fins. The basic energy equation is formulated accounting for the presence of a heat thermal fluid (HTF) on the walls. A two-dimensional numerical model is developed based on the enthalpy method to predict the distribution temperature of the fin and solid–liquid interface in storage. Results from the analytical solution and numerical model show a good agreement. The developed analytical model estimates satisfactorily the solidification time of PCM in storage, which is useful in the design of PCM-based thermal energy storages and cooling systems.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to study the thermal performance of latent cool thermal energy storage system using packed bed containing spherical capsules filled with phase change material during charging and discharging process. According to the energy balance of the phase change material (PCM) and heat transfer fluid (HTF), a mathematical model of packed bed is conducted. n-tetradecane is taken as PCM and aqueous ethylene glycol solution of 40% volumetric concentration is considered as HTF. The temperatures of the PCM and HTF, solid and melt fraction and cool stored and released rate with time are simulated. The effects of the inlet temperature and flow rate of HTF, porosity of packed bed and diameter of capsules on the melting time, solidification time, cool stored and released rate during charging and discharging process are also discussed.  相似文献

A horizontal double-pipe heat exchanger with an inverted outer equilateral triangular tube is modeled to numerically investigate the low-temperature thermal energy storage capability of an impure phase change material (PCM). The energy source fluid (hot water) flows through the inner tube and transfers heat to the PCM (heat sink) residing in the annular gap. The results show that the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) has a significant effect on the melting process compared with the mass flow rate (MFR). The configuration, as well the concentricity/eccentricity of the inner tube has a great influence on the energy storage.  相似文献

An experimental energy storage system has been designed using a horizontal concentric tube heat exchanger incorporating a medium temperature phase change material (PCM) Erythritol, with a melting point of 117.7 °C. Three experimental configurations, a control system with no heat transfer enhancement and systems augmented with circular and longitudinal fins have been studied. The results presented compare the system heat transfer characteristics using isotherm plots and temperature-time curves. The system with longitudinal fins gave the best performance with increased thermal response during charging and reduced subcooling in the melt during discharging. The experimentally measured data for the control, circular finned and longitudinal finned systems have been shown to vindicate the assumption of axissymmetry (direction parallel to the heat transfer fluid flow) using temperature gradients in the axial, radial and angular directions in the double pipe PCM system.  相似文献

This paper addresses a numerical and experimental investigation of a thermal energy storage unit involving phase change process dominated by heat conduction. The thermal energy storage unit involves a triplex concentric tube with phase change material (PCM) filling in the middle channel, with hot heat transfer fluid (HHTF) flowing outer channel during charging process and cold heat transfer fluid (CHTF) flowing inner channel during discharging process. A simple numerical method according to conversation of energy, called temperature & thermal resistance iteration method has been developed for the analysis of PCM solidification and melting in the triplex concentric tube. To test the physical validity of the numerical results, an experimental apparatus has been designed and built by which the effect of the inlet temperature and the flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF, including HHTF and CHTF) on the thermal energy storage has been studied. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows good agreement. Graphical results including fluid temperature and interface of solid and liquid phase of PCM versus time and axial position, time-wise variation of energy stored/released by the system were presented and discussed.  相似文献

Employment of latent heat storage unit (LHSU) utilizing phase change material (PCM) in a substantial scale is constrained by the poor thermal conductivity of PCMs. Future utilization of LHSU will therefore to a great extent rely on the heat transfer intensification techniques. Present research is on enhancement techniques in which heat transfer mechanism is altered without altering the mass of PCM and heat transfer surface area. The intensification mechanisms considered in the present research include imparting eccentricity to heat transfer fluid (HTF) pipe, imparting rotation to the LHSU and providing multi HTF tube. Numerical investigations are reported here towards comparative evaluation of the thermal characteristics associated with such intensification mechanisms for horizontal LHSU. In the present study stearic acid (melting point 55.7–56.6?°C) is used as PCM and water is used as HTF. Results infer that all the three mechanisms offer quicker melting rate. For the geometric configuration of LHSU considered in the present research, a reduction in melting time of 47.75% is evaluated for rotating LHSU. The rate of energy storage is higher for both eccentric and rotating LHSU. Solidification process is however not accelerated by such techniques. On the contrary, eccentric and multi HTF tube LHSU takes more time for solidification.  相似文献

A thermal network model is developed and used to analyze heat transfer in a high temperature latent heat thermal energy storage unit for solar thermal electricity generation. Specifically, the benefits of inserting multiple heat pipes between a heat transfer fluid and a phase change material (PCM) are of interest. Two storage configurations are considered; one with PCM surrounding a tube that conveys the heat transfer fluid, and the second with the PCM contained within a tube over which the heat transfer fluid flows. Both melting and solidification are simulated. It is demonstrated that adding heat pipes enhances thermal performance, which is quantified in terms of dimensionless heat pipe effectiveness.  相似文献

Latent thermal energy storage system (LTES) is an integral part of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants for storing sun’s energy during its intermittent diurnal availability in the form of latent heat of a phase change material (PCM). The advantages of an LTES include its isothermal operation and high energy storage density, while the low thermal conductivity of the PCM used in LTES poses a significant disadvantage due to the reduction in the rate at which the PCM can be melted (charging) or solidified (discharging). The present study considers an approach to reducing the thermal resistance of LTES through embedding heat pipes to augment the energy transfer from the heat transfer fluid (HTF) to the PCM. Using a thermal resistance network model of a shell and tube LTES with embedded heat pipes, detailed parametric studies are carried out to assess the influence of the heat pipe and the LTES geometric and operational parameters on the performance of the system during charging and discharging. The physical model is coupled with a numerical optimization method to identify the design and operating parameters of the heat pipe embedded LTES system that maximizes energy transferred, energy transfer rate and effectiveness.  相似文献

The exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine carries away about 30% of the heat of combustion. The energy available in the exit stream of many energy conversion devices goes as waste, if not utilized properly. The major technical constraint that prevents successful implementation of waste heat recovery is due to its intermittent and time mismatched demand and availability of energy. In the present work, a shell and finned tube heat exchanger integrated with an IC engine setup to extract heat from the exhaust gas and a thermal energy storage tank used to store the excess energy available is investigated in detail. A combined sensible and latent heat storage system is designed, fabricated and tested for thermal energy storage using cylindrical phase change material (PCM) capsules. The performance of the engine with and without heat exchanger is evaluated. It is found that nearly 10–15% of fuel power is stored as heat in the combined storage system, which is available at reasonably higher temperature for suitable application. The performance parameters pertaining to the heat exchanger and the storage tank such as amount of heat recovered, heat lost, charging rate, charging efficiency and percentage energy saved are evaluated and reported in this paper.  相似文献

Thermal performance characteristics of a eutectic mixture of lauric and stearic acids as phase change material (PCM) during the melting and solidification processes were determined experimentally in a vertical two concentric pipe-energy storage system. This study deals with three important subjects: The first one is to determine the eutectic composition ratio of the lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA) binary system, and to measure its thermophysical properties by DSC. The second one is to establish the thermal characteristics of the mixture such as total melting and solidification times, the heat transfer modes in melted and solidified PCM, and the effect of Reynolds and Stefan numbers as inlet heat transfer fluid (HTF) conditions on the phase transition behaviors. The final one includes the calculations of the heat transfer coefficients between the outside wall of the HTF pipe and the PCM, and heat fractions during the melting and solidification processes of the mixture, and also the discussion of the effect of inlet HTF parameters on these characteristics. The LA–SA binary system in the mixture ratio of 75.5:24.5 wt % forms a eutectic, which melts at 37°C and has a latent heat of 182.7 J g−1, and, thus, these properties make it an attractive phase change material used for passive solar space heating applications such as building and greenhouse heating with respect to the climate conditions. The experimental results indicated that the mixture encapsulated in the annulus of two concentric pipes has good thermal and heat transfer characteristics during the melting and solidification processes, and it has potential for heat storage in passive solar space heating systems.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage (TES) using phase change materials (PCMs) has recently received considerable attention in the literature, due to its high storage capacity and isothermal behaviour during the storage (melting or charging) and removal (discharging or solidification). In this study, a novel modification on a tube-in-shell-type storage geometry is suggested. In the proposed geometry, the outer surface of the shell is inclined and it is the objective of this study to determine the optimum range for the inclination angle of the shell surface. Paraffin with a melting temperature of 58.06°C, which is supplied by the Merck Company, is used as the PCM. The PCM is stored in the vertical annular space between an inner tube through which the heat transfer fluid (HTF), hot water, is flowing and a concentrically placed outer shell. At first, the thermophysical properties of this paraffin are determined through the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis. Temporal behaviour of the PCM undergoing a non-isothermal solid–liquid phase change during its melting or charging by the HTF are determined for different values of the inlet temperature and the mass flow rate of the HTF. The new geometry is shown to respond well with the melting characteristics of the PCM and to enhance heat transfer inside the PCM for a specific range of the shell inclination angle.
