The present study investigates the changes in blood cholesterol and total lipids concentrations, as well as changes in milk fat, protein, lactose and total solids content of sows after the long-term administration of virginiamycin (VM) in the feed. Seventy-two (72) healthy Dalland gilts, in 18 groups of four (2 + 2) siblings were used in total. The gilts of each group of siblings were randomly allocated to one of the following four dietary treatments: VM0 = negative control, virginiamycin 0 mg/kg, VM20 = virginiamycin 20 mg/kg feed, VM40 = virginiamycin 40 mg/kg feed and VM60 = virginiamycin 60 mg/kg of feed. Treatments started at the age of 6 months covering three complete breeding cycles (up to the third weaning). The first eight groups of siblings (eight gilts per treatment/32 gilts in total) were used for blood sampling (blood group), while the remaining 10 groups of siblings (10 gilts per treatment/40 gilts in total) were used for milk sampling (milk group). Feeds given at insemination, pregnancy and lactation did not contain any other antibacterial or performance enhancer. The results indicate that all three levels of VM supplementation of gilt/sow feed influenced certain blood parameters by increasing (P < 0.05) both cholesterol and total lipids concentrations on the 30th and 60th day of each pregnancy, at each farrowing and at each weaning. The effect of dietary VM on these blood parameters remained constant throughout three consecutive parities. Moreover, the results indicate a beneficial effect of dietary VM on the milk quality of the sows during the third lactation by increasing (P < 0.05) (i) the mean fat content, (ii) the mean protein content, (iii) the mean lactose content and (iv) the mean total solids content. The highest (P < 0.05) levels in both blood and milk parameters were noticed at the inclusion level of 40 mg/kg of feed.  相似文献

A study was conducted with sows of a high-producing genotype to evaluate their reproductive performance using three breeding weights over a three-parity period in two management systems. A total of 114 F1 gilts (Landrace x Yorkshire) were used in a split-plot, randomized, complete block experiment conducted as a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments in two replicates. Three gilt breeding weights of 120, 135, and 150 kg were achieved by feeding 1.8, 2.3, or 3.2 kg/d of a .73% lysine corn-soybean meal (C-SBM) diet, respectively, from 5 to 8 mo of age. Two locations, each with different management systems, were considered the main plot and consisted of 1) outside, concrete-floored gestation lots and indoor farrowing pens or 2) indoor gestation pens and farrowing crates. All sows were fed 1.8 (Parity 1) or 2.1 (Parity 2 and 3) kg/d of a .73% lysine C-SBM diet during the breeding and gestation periods, whereas a .82% lysine C-SBM diet with 5% added fat was available ad libitum during lactation. All sows lost weight during the first lactation; larger weight losses occurred as breeding weight increased (P < .01). During the second and third lactations the 135- and 150-kg sow breeding groups had less lactation weight change, whereas the 120-kg group lost more weight, resulting in a breeding weight x parity interaction (P < .01). The 120-kg breeding weight group consumed less feed (P < .05) for the three lactation periods than did the heavier weight groups. Initial breeding weight had no effect on number of pigs born (total, live) or pig and litter weights at birth. Pig mortality increased with increasing breeding weight (P < .01) and parity (P < .05), a response that was exacerbated when sows farrowed in pens vs crates. Postweaning breeding intervals and sow removal from the experiment were not significantly affected by initial breeding weight, but a numerically higher percentage of sows in the 120-kg group were anestrous or failed to conceive than the percentage of such sows in the heavier weight groups. These data suggest that an initial breeding weight of approximately 135 kg at 8 mo of age may be best when sows farrow in crates, whereas when sows farrow in pens a lower breeding weight may be more desirable.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering feed and detecting estrous behavior by computer-controlled equipment in a nonconfinement environment. In Exp. 1, gilts were assigned to treatment when detected pregnant by ultrasound at 30 to 35 d after artificial insemination. They were assigned to be fed individually in stalls once/day (0830) with a scoop (controls, n = 20) or with an electronic sow feeding station (ESF, n = 20). The ESF gilts received their feed in 98.6-g aliquots at 80-s intervals as they visited the feeding station. Control vs ESF gilts did not differ (P > .8) for backfat (2.2 vs 2.1 cm) or weight (170 vs 172 kg) before farrowing, total and live pigs/litter (9.3 and 8.7 vs 9.1 and 8.8), or litter birth weight (12.7 vs 12.1). In Exp. 2, proceptive behavior, as measured by visits to a boar's pen, were recorded electronically, and observed estrus was evaluated in two groups of sows during their first (n = 11) and second and third (n = 19) estrous cycles and in one group of gilts (n = 14). A partition prevented visual and physical contact between the boar and the visiting females except where the electronic estrus detection (EED) station was installed. Sixteen farms having an average lactation length between 14.9 and 18.9 days were selected based upon producers' willingness to keep records of production and lactation feed intake. Data contained 9162 subsequent litter-size records abstracted from computerized production information-system files and lactation feed-intake records. Two-way interactions between the associations of parity and lactation length, and parity and weaning-to-conception interval with subsequent litter size were found in the same statistical model. Subsequent litter size did not increase in parities 1 and 2 as lactation length increased--but subsequent litter size in sows of parities 3-6 increased. In only parity 1, sows with weaning-to-conception interval 6-12 days produced 0.5 fewer pigs at subsequent farrowing than those with weaning-to-conception interval 1-5 days. However, in multiparous sows, no difference in subsequent litter size was found between weaning-to-conception intervals 1-5 and 6-12 days.  相似文献

Fifty pure-bred Large White gilts were allocated to two feeding levels from 28 kg until service. They were fed a standard growing diet (13.4 MJ digestible energy (DE) per kg; 18.1% crude protein, CP; 0.96% lysine) either to appetite (AP) or at 80% of the AP level (R). Growth rate was reduced by about 20% in R gilts, whereas feed conversion ratio was unaffected by rearing treatment. First oestrus was detected earlier in AP gilts (234 versus 247 d of age). At service, AP females had larger body weight (190 versus 150 kg) and thicker backfat (20.9 versus 13.4 mm). After service, the reproductive performances of 30 of these gilts were studied during the first reproductive cycle. All gilts received 2.6 kg/d of a standard diet (12.6 MJ DE/kg; 13.9% CP; 0.59% lysine) during pregnancy and were fed ad libitum a commercial lactation diet (13.1 MJ DE/kg; 17.1% CP; 0.90% lysine) from day five after farrowing. At farrowing, AP females were larger (257 versus 225 kg) and had more backfat (23.7 versus 17.4 mm) than R ones. Reproductive performance during the first lactation was not affected by rearing treatment, and weaning to oestrus interval was similar in both groups (4.8 d, on average). During lactation, R sows consumed significantly more feed (+650 g/d) and lost less backfat depth (1.5 versus 3.8 mm) than AP ones.  相似文献

Gilts and sows were bred one, two, or three times during a single estrous period in a commercial herd for evaluating the effect of mating frequency on reproductive performance. Estrus detection started at approximately 0630 daily by applying back pressure to females with the presence of a mature boar. Natural mating was used. Gilts detected in estrus were mated in the morning of d 1 (AM), the morning of d 1 and 2 (AM-AM), and the morning and afternoon of d 1 and morning of d 2 (AM-PM-AM) for mating frequencies 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Sows were bred in the AM, AM-AM, AM-PM-AM (1), and morning of d 1 and morning and afternoon of d 2 [AM-AM-PM (2)] for mating frequency 1, 2, 3 (1), and 3 (2), respectively. Breeding events in the morning and afternoon started at approximately 0730 and 1530. Females were randomly assigned to a mating frequency. Boars were randomly assigned to each breeding event. In total, 256 gilts and 766 sows were involved in the study. Gilts with a single mating (76.5%, P = .06) and triple matings (80.4%, P < .05) had higher farrowing rates than those with double matings (65.3%). No differences (P > .1) in the farrowing rates of sows were observed between mating frequencies 1, 2, 3 (1), and 3 (2). Double-mated gilts had more (P < .03) total born (9.7 vs 8.6) and pigs born alive (9.3 vs 8.2) than did single-mated gilts. There were no differences (P > .3) in total born and pigs born alive in sows between mating frequencies. We concluded that triple-mating gilts and sows did not improve farrowing rate and litter size compared with single and double matings. There were no differences in farrowing rate and litter size between double- and single-mated sows. Gilts with double matings had a larger litter size than those with a single mating.  相似文献

One hundred eighty-five (n = 24 to 27/group; average parity 1.3) sows (PIC, Line C-15) were used to evaluate effects of the interrelationship between isoleucine and valine on sow and litter performance. Diets were formulated to .90% total lysine with all amino acids other than isoleucine and valine at least 110% of their suggested requirement estimate relative to lysine using ratios derived from the National and Agricultural Research Councils. The control diet was formulated to .50% isoleucine and .72% valine. L-Valine and L-isoleucine replaced cornstarch to provide .72 or 1.07% dietary valine, and .50, .85, or 1.20% isoleucine. A seventh diet contained .50% isoleucine and 1.42% valine. Mean litter size after cross-fostering was 11.1 pigs, and average lactation length was 20.3 d. No valine x isoleucine interactions were observed (P > .10) for most response criteria. Number of pigs weaned (mean = 10.9), sow feed intake (mean = 6.13 kg), and lysine intake (mean = 55 g/d) were not affected by dietary isoleucine or valine. Litter weight and weight gain at weaning increased as dietary valine (P < .07), isoleucine (linear, P < .07), and total branched-chain amino acids (linear, P < .02) increased. Twelve sows per treatment (84 total) were milked manually on either d 17 or 18 of lactation. Increasing dietary valine increased milk DM and fat (linear, P < .01). Milk DM, CP, and fat increased (linear, P < .002) as dietary isoleucine increased. The casein fraction of milk protein increased (linear, P < .01) and whey and nonprotein N fractions decreased (linear, P < .06, P < .01, respectively) as dietary isoleucine increased. Based on these results, valine and isoleucine increased litter weights. The independent increases in litter weaning weights from adding valine and isoleucine suggest separate modes of action in lactating sows.  相似文献

Seven pairs of first littermate gilts were used to study the influence of low copper supply and pregnancy on physiological fluids and reproductive performance of first-litter gilts. They were fed semi-purified diets containing either 2.13 or 12.25 micrograms/kg of Cu from 30 days of gestation through two weeks of lactation. Low-Cu gilts had lower plasma Cu in early- and mid- gestation and farrowed piglets with lower plasma Cu and higher plasma Zn concentrations (p < 0.05). Plasma Fe and Mn concentrations were not affected by Cu supply (p > 0.05). Plasma Cu and Fe levels of newborn piglets were lower than those of their dams (p < 0.05) but this was not true for plasma Zn and Mn (p > 0.05). Low-Cu gilts had lower Cu and higher Zn content in colostrum and also lower Cu in milk than control gilts (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in Fe and Mn levels in colostrum and milk between the two treatments (p > 0.05). Colostrum was richer in Cu and Zn than milk (p < 0.05) but not in Fe and Mn (p > 0.05). The low-Cu diet did not affect (p > 0.05) weight changes during pregnancy. The duration of parturition was shorter for low-Cu than for control gilts (3.19h vs. 5.71h, p < 0.05). Control gilts farrowed larger litters than low-Cu gilts (9.71 vs. 7.57 piglets, p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in live litter weights at birth, one wk. or two wks. of age (p > 0.05). The results indicated that a low-Cu diet and pregnancy had some effect on plasma, colostrum and milk mineral concentrations, as well as on litter size of gilts. A trial was designed to determine the effect of season and feed restriction on LH and prolactin secretion, adrenal response, insulin and FFA in the early pregnant gilt. Groups of cross bred gilts (n = 24) were mated and allocated to two feeding levels; a non-restricted group received close to ad libitum feeding of 3.6 kg whereas, the restricted group received 1.8 kg as recommended by the NRC. The trial was carried out in winter-spring and repeated in summer-autumn to investigate the effects of season. The feeding regimen were fed to the group housed animals for the first two weeks of pregnancy. A 12 h period of blood sampling every 15 min thereafter revealed higher amplitude LH pulses with larger area under the curve in winter compared with summer (1.17 +/- 0.03 vs. 0.69 +/- 0.03 ng ml(-1) and 65.09 +/- 1.46 vs. 33.60 +/- 1.25, P < 0.05). Overall, feed restriction reduced LH pulse frequency (2.5 +/- 0.1 and 1.6 +/- 0.1 pulses/12 h for high and low feeding levels, P < 0.05), but the difference was large in winter and no difference was detected in summer. An ACTH challenge test carried out the day after the frequent sampling revealed greater response to the ACTH challenge in winter in comparison with summer. Plasma prolactin values were generally very low and ranged from 1 to 4.5 ng/ml with highest values detected in the feed restricted group in summer. Plasma FFA and insulin concentrations showed greater pre- versus post-prandial variation in the feed restricted groups. It was concluded, that feed restriction and season affected LH secretion and those effects appeared to be related to the metabolic changes in the early pregnant group housed gilt.  相似文献

The efficacy of an in-feed formulation (IVOMEC premix) containing 0.6% ivermectin was tested against Strongyloides ransomi in swine. The efficacy of ivermectin against patent infections of S. ransomi when given via the feed at 2 ppm for 7 days (Days 0-7) to provide 100 mcg ivermectin kg-1 body weight day-1 was evaluated in a study with 16 3-month-old male castrated piglets. Seven days prior to treatment each piglet was infected subcutaneously with 2500 infective larvae of S. ransomi. Fecal egg counts were carried out on Days -7, 0, 7 and 14, and worm counts on Day 14. Efficacy was 100% in all treated piglets. Two trials involving 40 pregnant gilts were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin against the somatic larval stages of S. ransomi when given at a daily dose of 100 mcg kg-1 body weight for 7 days starting on Days 66, 78, 92 or 103 of pregnancy. The gilts were each experimentally infected with three subcutaneous injections of 250,000 infective larvae, with the last infection given between 12 and 30 days prior to commencement of treatment. Gilts were confirmed free of pre-existing intestinal stages of S. ransomi prior to ivermectin treatment. Fecal nematode egg counts were carried out in gilts/sows and piglets subsequently born. The Strongyloides larvae present in sow milk 1, 2 and 7 days post partum were counted. Fourteen days post natum, worm counts were performed in four randomly selected piglets for each litter. IVOMEC premix given to pregnant gilts prevented shedding of larvae in sow milk, egg output in feces and the establishment of S. ransomi in piglets.  相似文献

A study was undertaken on a commercial swine farm to investigate methods of reducing perinatal mortality. During a 12-wk period, 251 sows and gilts were assigned randomly to one of four treatment groups in a 2 x 2 factorial design: 1) supervised/induced, 2) supervised/non-induced, 3) unsupervised/induced, and 4) unsupervised/non-induced. Supervised groups of sows and their litter were observed constantly for a minimum of 3 h before and until 3 d after farrowing. The onset of farrowing was induced with 250 micrograms of cloprostenol administered into the vulvo-vestibular mucosa. There was an increase (P = .012) in the number of pigs weaned from supervised (10.17 pigs/litter) relative to unsupervised group (9.44 pigs/litter). This increase was due to a reduction (P = .001) in both the number of stillborn pigs and the mortality of live-born pigs (P = .026). The latter resulted from fewer pigs that died (P = .003). Induction did not influence the mortality of pigs in the perinatal period in unsupervised groups. Induced sows farrowed an average of .43 d earlier than non-induced sows (P = .029). The mean interval from prostaglandin treatment to farrowing was 23.87 h (SD = 10.96). The results of this study suggest that a controlled farrowing system, coupled with good supervision, can improve pig survival. Financial analyses, based on improvements in pig survival resulting from additional labor in the farrowing house, suggested that this method of reducing preweaning mortality is a viable option for improving the profitability of commercial pig farms.  相似文献

140 sows and gilts of Danish Landrace were inseminated twice per heat with an interval of approximately 24 hours. Half of the females had their first insemination with semen of Danish Landrace and their second insemination with semen of Yorkshire, the other half vice versa. 114 females became pregnant. At farrowing the number of offspring of Danish Landrace and/or Danish Landrace X Yorkshire per sow/gilt was registrated. The results have been set out in tables I and II, from which it can be seen, that 59% conceived only after first insemination, 18% only after second insemination and 23% after both first and second insemination. In the last group 52% of the offspring were from the first insemination and 48% from the second insemination. In the sows no increase in av. litter size after two inseminations was found. The results are discussed and apparent discrepancy with earlier results is explained with a presumbably existing competition in the female genital tract between sperms from two inseminations at different times in the heat, resulting in ageing of the first inseminated sperms.  相似文献

We used 35 primiparous sows to investigate the link between body fatness at farrowing and voluntary feed intake (VFI) during lactation. Two groups of sows were fed differently throughout gestation (either 2.3 kg/d of a diet containing 5.8% CP and 14.6 MJ DE/kg as fed or 1.7 kg/d of a diet containing 15.6% CP and 14.5 MJ DE/kg as fed) so that they commenced lactation at a similar body weight (158 to 152 kg) but with different body compositions: either 340 (fat) or 280 (lean) g of body fat/kg BW (P < .001). During lactation, sows were offered either a low-protein diet (7.9% CP and 15.5 MJ DE/kg as fed) or a high-protein diet (19.0% CP and 15.6 MJ DE/kg as fed) on an ad libitum basis. During lactation, VFI was measured daily, and sow body weight and backfat were measured weekly. Blood samples were collected from sows on d 110 of gestation and d 14 and 28 of lactation, and plasma was analyzed for NEFA, glycerol, insulin, glucose, and beta-hydroxybutyrate. Fat sows ate 30% less than their lean counterparts during lactation (P < .001), which corresponded to a 70% higher concentration of NEFA in plasma (P = .01) and a 30% higher concentration of glycerol (P = .15). The VFI during the first 2 wk of lactation was affected only by body fatness and not by the protein content of the lactation diet. The dietary supply of protein influenced VFI during wk 3 and 4 of lactation, possibly by affecting milk production and hence the drive to consume feed. Weight loss, particularly lean tissue loss, was minimized by feeding the high-protein diet during lactation (P < .002).  相似文献

Number born alive (NBA) and litter weaning weight (LWT) can be influenced by many factors, including environment, parity, age at farrowing, lactation length, and genetic merit as well as number of pigs after transfer (NAT) and weaning age (WNAGE) for LWT. The objectives of this study were to estimate adjustment factors for NBA and LWT using all effects in the model and to refine parity effects by including age of the sow in parity 1 (P1) and parity 2 (P2). The models used included fixed effects of contemporary groups and parity/age class, random direct genetic and permanent environment effects, as well as the fixed effects of NAT and WNAGE for LWT. A large effect due to age of the sow at breeding within P1 and P2 was found and new adjustments were found to differ from previous studies. In the Yorkshire population, for example, the average P1 adjustment was 1.0 pig in this study, compared to the current .69; however, this ranges from 1.46 for the youngest P1 females to .57 for the oldest. Similarly, in P2 the average adjustment was found to be .50, with an adjustment of .99 for the youngest P2 and 0 for the oldest. Also, age of dam was found to contribute variation to P1 litter records for LWT. A residual analysis showed nonsignificant differences (P > .60) across the age classes after using the new adjustments; however, significant differences (P < .01) remained after using the current adjustments.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of n-methyl-d,l-aspartate (NMA), an agonist of the neurotransmitter glutamate, on circulating concentrations of LH, GH, and cortisol in gilts treated during the luteal (n = 4) or follicular (n = 4) phase of the estrous cycle, or after ovariectomy (n = 4). Blood was sampled every 15 min for 10 h on each of two consecutive days. On the 1st d, two gilts from each group received i.v. injections of NMA (10 mg/kg BW) at h 4 and 6, and the remaining gilts received .9% saline (vehicle). The following day, gilts that had received NMA on the 1st d received vehicle, and gilts that had received vehicle on d 1 received NMA. All gilts received an i.v. challenge of GnRH (.1 microg/kg BW) at h 8 on each day. The NMA treatment increased (P < .01) LH pulse frequency in luteal-phase gilts by 125%. In contrast, NMA decreased (P < .05) mean concentrations of LH by 48% and suppressed (P < .01) LH pulse frequency by 33% in ovariectomized gilts. No characteristics of LH secretion were affected (P > .05) by NMA in follicular phase gilts. Serum LH concentrations for the 2-h period following GnRH were lower (P < .05) in follicular-phase gilts than in ovariectomized gilts and were 1.15 +/- .09 (mean +/- SE), .81 +/- .05, and .51 +/- .17 ng/mL for ovariectomized, luteal-phase, and follicular-phase gilts, respectively. Treatment with NMA increased circulating concentrations of GH by 334% (P < .01) and cortisol by 77% (P < .03) in all gilts. We suggest that the effects of NMA on LH release in gilts depend on the circulating steroidal milieu. In contrast, NMA evokes secretion of GH and cortisol irrespective of the reproductive status of treated gilts.  相似文献

Three trials were conducted to test whether feeding the leucine metabolite beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate (HMB) would increase fat content of sows' milk and pig weight gain. All sows received a basal diet and were assigned at random to receive either 2 g of CaCO3/d (control) or 2 g of Ca(HMB)2/d (HMB), which was top-dressed to the basal diet. Treatment began 3 to 4 d before farrowing. In Trials 1, 2, and 3 there were 4, 19, and 11 pairs of sows, respectively. In a combined analysis that included all three trials, milk fat at d 1 was increased by 41% (P = .01) and pig weight at d 21 was increased by 7% (P = .01) for sows fed diets containing HMB compared with sows fed control diets. Sows fed HMB lost more backfat (P = .03); however, sows receiving HMB had more (P < .05) backfat depth at farrowing than control sows. At weaning there was no difference in backfat depth between the treatment groups. Sows fed HMB tended to consume less feed (P = .07) than control sows. In Trials 2 and 3, data were collected on the subsequent reproductive cycles of the sows. A combined analysis of the data revealed no differences in sow performance when sows previously fed the diet containing HMB were compared with sows previously fed the control diet. In conclusion, beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate, when fed to sows at 2 g/d, resulted in an increase in fat percentage of sow's milk and pig performance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Polyvinyl catheters were inserted into the right and left utero-ovarian veins (UOV) and saphenous vein (SV) and artery (SA) of six non-pregnant (O) and five pregnant (P) gilts on day 11 after onset estrus. Beginning on day 12, UOV blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals from 0800 to 1100 hr and 2000 to 2300 hr, and single samples were taken at 1200 and 2400 hrs. Peripheral blood (SA or SV) was sampled at 0800, 1200, 2000 and 2400 hr until gilts returned to estrus (X = 20.6 days) or day 24 of pregnancy. UOV plasma PGF concentrations (ng/ml; n = 1929) were measured by RIA. Status (P vs O) by day interactions were detected (P less than .01) but variances among treatments were heterogenous (P less than .01). Curvilinear day trends were detected for PGF in 0 gilts (P less than .01) but not P gilts. PGF peaks, defined as concentrations greater than two SD above the mean concentration for each gilt, occurred with greater frequency (chi2 = 16.4; P less than .01) in O than P gilts; and mean peak levels (X +/- SE) were 5.04 +/- .27 and 3.84 +/- .13 ng/ml, respectively. Progesterone concentrations were maintained in pregnant pigs and were indicative of luteal maintenance. Systematic differences in day trends of utero-ovarian venous plasma estradiol were detected between O and P pigs. An experiment was designed to verify the effect of dietary NaHCO3 supplementation on performance of guinea fowl raised under high environmental temperatures (23.8 to 33.9 C) and average relative humidity of 78.7%. One hundred and forty guinea fowl in their final period of growth (56 to 84 d of age) were allotted to individual wire cages. Five isocaloric (3,000 kcal ME/kg) 16% CP diets based on corn and soybean meal and containing 0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4% sodium bicarbonate were fed to the birds. The experiment followed a randomized block design with 28 birds per treatment (14 of each sex) with each bird being considered as one repetition. Results showed that weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, mortality, blood pH, carcass yield, and carcass composition were not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary sodium bicarbonate supplementation. Weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, carcass moisture, and fat content, however, were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by sex. Females showed 17.49% better weight gain, 7.16% greater feed intake, and 9.6% better feed conversion than males. These differences were exacerbated at supplementation levels of 1.2 and 1.8% sodium bicarbonate in the diet. Male birds showed carcass moisture values significantly (P < 0.05) greater than those of female birds; the opposite occurred with carcass fat levels. The use of sodium bicarbonate in levels up to 2.4% of the diet did not affect the performance of guinea fowl raised under the environmental conditions registered in this study.  相似文献

Preparturient sows were randomly assigned to either a farrowing crate (n = 12) or farrowing pen (n = 12) across cool and hot seasons (with or without drip cooling) to study space allocation and temperature effects on periparturient maternal behaviors, steroid concentrations, and piglet growth rates. Concentrations of estradiol-17 beta (E2 beta), progesterone (P4), and cortisol were quantified in blood collected from surgically implanted vena cava cannulas. Sows were videotaped from 2 h before to 2 h after farrowing. Similar periparturient behaviors were displayed by all sows, regardless of farrowing environment. Sows in pens had lower (P < .05) prepartum P4 concentrations from d -6 to the day preceding farrowing and a reduced (P < .05) piglet birth interval compared with sows in crates (12.95 +/- 1.35 min vs 18.31 +/- 2.21 min, respectively). Additionally, compared with multiparous sows in crates, multiparous sows in pens weaned heavier piglets (P < .05). Estradiol-17 beta concentrations were lower (P < .01) throughout lactation during hot weather for sows with or without drip cooling, averaging 9.30 pg/mL and 8.57 pg/mL, respectively, compared with 18.65 pg/mL for sows during cool weather. This decrease in E2 beta concentration in sows during hot weather was correlated with an extended (P < .05) interval from weaning to first estrus for the sows in hot weather compared to sows during cool weather. Cortisol concentrations decreased progressively during lactation and were not associated with litter weight gains or the interval between weaning and first estrus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the virulence of selected strains of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) relative to reproductive performance of pregnant gilts. DESIGN: 16 pregnant gilts (principals) were exposed oronasally to 4 strains (vaccine strain RespPRRS, field strains VR-2385, VR-2431, and NADC-8, 4 gilts/strain) of PRRSV on or about day 90 of gestation, 4 pregnant gilts (controls) were kept under similar conditions, except for exposure to PRRSV. Samples and specimens obtained from gilts, pigs (before ingestion of colostrum), and fetuses were tested for PRRSV and homologous antibody. ANIMALS: 20 pregnant gilts. PROCEDURE: The virulence of each strain of PRRSV was evaluated mainly on the clinical status of the corresponding litters at farrowing. RESULTS: Most gilts remained clinically normal throughout the study and farrowed normally at or near the expected farrowing time. All virus strains crossed the placenta of principal gilts to infect fetuses in utero. The number of late-term dead fetuses (which appeared to be the best measure of relative virulence) ranged from 0 for litters of control gilts and gilts exposed to strain RespPRRS, to 38 for gilts exposed to strain NADC-8. All principal gilts became viremic and developed antibody against PRRSV. All strains persisted in alveolar macrophages of at least some principal gilts for at least 7 weeks after exposure. CONCLUSION: Strains of PRRSV vary in virulence. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The effects of PRRSV on reproductive performance are strain dependent and this should be considered in making a tentative diagnosis on the basis of clinical observations.  相似文献
