The successful commercial deployment of Hybrid Fibre/Coaxial (HFC) access networks in the residential market has so far been driven by demand for faster Internet access and the prospects of a host of new services based on real‐time voice and video. To sustain their growth rates and compete with alternative approaches, such as ADSL, they must be enhanced with the capability to efficiently handle quality‐intensive real‐time services. The new multi‐service paradigm mandates isolation of traffic classes, conditioning of entering traffic and preventive control in addition to traditional closed‐loop control. The differentiated services (DiffServ) architecture with its relevant traffic control tools and the bundling of behaviour aggregates is particularly suited to the H/W‐based MAC of HFC systems. It constitutes a suitable framework enabling the support of proliferating real‐time voice‐ and video‐based services while aligning the system to the emerging Internet strategy of scalable service differentiation. The implementation of such a solution in the ACTS 327AROMA research project is presented in this paper. The performance of the system is evaluated using computer simulation. The unique capabilities of new cellular systems are expected to provide users with integrated multimedia services. Since the air interface still represents the system bottleneck, this paper proposes novel scheduling techniques to integrate efficiently the support of real‐time traffic (i.e. voice and video) and data bursty traffic under quality of service (QoS) guarantees. Prioritization among traffic classes is adopted and a polling service discipline is employed within a class, where the permission rights of each traffic source are determined on the basis of token bucket regulators. Two polling‐based approaches are compared to serve the sources of a class: (i) when a source is enabled to transmit, a burst of packets is sent at once; (ii) within the time interval destined to a traffic class, a cyclic service of the sources is allowed on a packet basis. With realistic assumptions on both radio channel conditions and protocol signaling overhead, this paper compares these two different approaches and the dynamic slot assignment++ (DSA++) scheme appeared in the literature. The obtained results highlight that our second scheme (case ii) allows increasing the number of supported video traffic sources of many units with respect to DSA++. The integration of voice and data services over PACS systems using a movable boundary scheme is studied. First, we use the theory of discrete‐time Markov chain to analyse the system; then, an approximate analysis using the continuous‐time Markov chain model is conducted. For the initial access of voice calls we consider two distinct schemes: at most one idle slot being marked available, and all the idle slots being marked available. Numerical results show that the performance difference for voice calls between both schemes is trivial, but the former scheme offers a performance advantage for data calls over the latter scheme. Besides, the performance obtained by the continuous‐time Markov model is very close to that obtained by the discrete‐time Markov model. This finding suggests the effectiveness of the usage of the continuous‐time Markov model, which can dramatically simplify the analysis. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The exponential growth in the demand of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services along with the increasing demand for mobility in VoIP services has attracted great research efforts towards provisioning of VoIP services in IEEE 802.11‐based Wireless LANs (WiFi networks). We address one of the important research problems, namely, the quality of service (QoS)‐aware efficient silence suppression in the bursty voice traffic, for provisioning VoIP services in WiFi networks. The research works in the recent literature on silence suppression in voice calls have been surveyed categorising them on how the activity arrival is notified to the access point (AP). In most of the recent schemes, notification of uplink activity arrival is done through contention based medium access mechanisms such as the distributed coordination function (DCF). Contention‐based medium access causes non‐deterministic delays, therefore such schemes are not suited to voice traffic which require strict delay bound guarantees. This paper focuses on the schemes which do not use contention based approaches for silence suppression in voice traffic. Analytical performance evaluation and comparison of such schemes is carried out. Two very important performance metrics are modelled mathematically. One is the expected polling overhead time that the schedulers in these schemes can save per voice call during one voice activity cycle as compared to that in the round‐robin polling scheduler. The other is the expected unnecessary wireless channel access delay that a typical first talk‐spurt frame experiences due to the specific design of each scheme. Future mobile services are expected to include various non‐voice oriented services. One important category of non‐voice oriented mobile services is non‐real‐time services. When a mobile user establishes a connection to access non‐real‐time service, the mobile user usually cares about whether the total time to complete its data transfer is within its time tolerance. In addition, different mobile users may have different bandwidth requirements and different tolerances in the total completion time. It is essential for wireless systems to provide various mobile users with different total completion times. In this paper, two quality‐of‐service (QoS) metrics, called stretch ratio and eligibility percentage, are employed at a connection level to present the degree of the length of the total completion time. We devise a measurement based call admission control scheme that provides multiple QoSs for various mobile users which have different requirements of stretch ratios, eligibility percentages, and bandwidths. Extensive simulation results show that the measurement based call admission control scheme not only provides various satisfactory QoSs for mobile users but also produces high throughput. To support Quality of service (QoS)‐sensitive applications like real‐time video streaming in IEEE 802.11 networks, a MAC layer extension for QoS, IEEE 802.11e, has been recently ratified as a standard. This MAC layer solution, however, addresses only the issue of prioritized access to the wireless medium and leaves such issues as QoS guarantee and admission control to the traffic control systems at the higher layers. This paper presents an IP‐layer traffic control system for IEEE 802.11 networks based on available bandwidth estimation. We build an analytical model for estimating the available bandwidth by extending an existing throughput computation model, and implement a traffic control system that provides QoS guarantees and admission control by utilizing the estimated available bandwidth information. We have conducted extensive performance evaluation of the proposed scheme via both simulations and measurements in the real test‐bed. The experiment results show that our estimation model and traffic control system work accurately and effectively in various network load conditions without IEEE 802.11e. The presence of IEEE 802.11e will allow even more efficient QoS provision, as the proposed scheme and the MAC layer QoS support will complement each other. We propose an opportunistic cross‐layer architecture for adaptive support of Voice over IP in multi‐hop wireless LANs. As opposed to providing high call quality, we target emergencies where it is important to communicate, even if at low quality, no matter the harshness of the network conditions. With the importance of delay on voice quality in mind, we select adaptation parameters that control the ratio of real‐time traffic load to available bandwidth. This is achieved in two ways: minimizing the load and maximizing the bandwidth. The PHY/MAC interaction improves the use of the spectral resources by opportunistically exploiting rate‐control and packet bursts, while the MAC/application interaction controls the demand per source through voice compression. The objective is to maximize the number of calls admitted that satisfy the end‐to‐end delay budget. The performance of the protocol is studied extensively in the ns‐2 network simulator. Results indicate that call quality degrades as load increases and overlonger paths, and a larger packet size improves performance. For long paths having low‐quality channels, forward error correction, header compression, and relaxing the delay budget of the system are required to maintain call admission and quality. Wireless IP networks will provide voice and data services using IP protocols over the wireless channel. But current IP is unsuitable to provide delay or loss bounds and insufficient to support diverse quality of service, both required by real‐time applications. In order to support real‐time applications in wireless IP networks, in this paper a measurement‐based admission control (MBAC) with priority criteria and service classes is considered. First we have shown the suitability of MBAC in wireless IP networks by comparing its performance with a parameter‐based scheme. Next, we have investigated the performance of strictly policy‐based MBAC and policy plus traffic characteristic‐based MBAC schemes in terms of (1) increasing the user mobility, (2) changing traffic parameters and (3) the presence of greedy users. Voice over IP (VoIP) is increasingly replacing the old public switched telephone network (PSTN) technology. In this new scenario, there are several challenges for VoIP providers. First, VoIP requires a detailed monitoring of both users' quality of service (QoS) and experience (QoE) to a greater extent than in traditional PSTNs. Second, such a monitoring process must be able to track VoIP traffic in high‐speed networks, nowadays typically of multi‐Gb/s rates. Third, recent government directives require that providers retain information from their users' calls. Similarly, the convergence of data and voice services allows operators to provide new services such as full‐data retention, in which users' calls can be recorded for either quality assessment (call centers, QoE) or security purposes (lawful interception). This implies a significant investment in infrastructure, especially in large‐scale networks which require multiple points of measurement and redundancy. This paper proposes a novel methodology, architecture and system to fulfill such challenges, called VoIPCallMon, as well as the data structures and necessary hardware‐tuning knowledge for its development. As distinguishing features, VoIPCallMon provides very high performance, being able to process VoIP traffic on‐the‐fly at high bitrates, novel services and significant cost reduction by using commodity hardware with minimal interference with operational VoIP networks. The performance evaluation shows that the system copes with the VoIP load of real‐world operators. We further evaluated the system performance at a fully saturated 10 Gb/s link and no packet loss was reported, therefore demonstrating the potential of commodity hardware solutions. Good quality video services always require higher bandwidth. Hence, to provide the video services e.g., multicast/broadcast services (MBSs) and unicast services along with the existing voice, internet, and other background traffic services over the wireless cellular networks, it is required to efficiently manage the wireless resources in order to reduce the overall forced call termination probability, to maximize the overall service quality, and to maximize the revenue. Fixed bandwidth allocation for the MBS sessions either reduces the quality of the MBS videos and bandwidth utilization or increases the overall forced call termination probability and of course the handover call dropping probability as well. Scalable video coding (SVC) technique allows the variable bit rate allocation for the video services. In this paper, we propose a bandwidth allocation scheme that efficiently allocates bandwidth among the MBS sessions and the non-MBS traffic calls (e.g., voice, unicast, internet, and other background traffic). The proposed scheme reduces the bandwidth allocation for the MBS sessions during the congested traffic condition only to accommodate more calls in the system. Instead of allocating fixed bandwidths for the MBS sessions and the non-MBS traffic, our scheme allocates variable bandwidths for them. However, the minimum quality of the videos is guaranteed by allocating minimum bandwidth for them. Using the mathematical and numerical analyses, we show that the proposed scheme maximizes the bandwidth utilization and significantly reduces the overall forced call termination probability as well as the handover call dropping probability.  相似文献

Thanks to the great possibilities of providing different types of telecommunication traffic to a large geographical area, satellite networks are expected to be an essential component of the next‐generation internet. As a result, issues concerning the designing and testing of efficient connection‐admission‐control (CAC) strategies in order to increase the quality of service (QoS) for multimedia traffic sources, are attractive and at the cutting edge of research. This paper investigates the potential strengths of a generic digital‐video‐broadcasting return‐channel‐via‐satellite (DVB‐RCS) system architecture, proposing a new CAC algorithm with the aim of efficiently managing real‐time multimedia video sources, both with constant and high variable data rate transmission; moreover, the proposed admission strategy is compared with a well‐known iterative CAC mainly designed for the managing of real‐time bursty traffic sources in order to demonstrate that the new algorithm is also well suited for those traffic sources. Performance analysis shows that, both algorithms guarantee the agreed QoS to real‐time bursty connections that are more sensitive to delay jitter; however, our proposed algorithm can also manage interactive real‐time multimedia traffic sources in high load and mixed traffic conditions.  相似文献

A new medium access control (MAC) protocol for mobile wireless communications is presented and investigated. We explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of the protocol when integrating voice, video and data packet traffic over a wireless channel of high capacity (referring to an indoor microcellular environment). Depending on the number of video users admitted into the system, our protocol varies: a) the request bandwidth dedicated to resolving the voice users contention, and b) the probability with which the base station grants information slots to voice users, in order to preserve full priority for video traffic. We evaluate the maximum voice capacity and mean access delay, as well as the aggregate channel throughput, for various voice and video load conditions, and the maximum voice capacity, aggregate channel throughput and average data message delays, for various video, voice and data load conditions. As proven by the comparison with a recently introduced efficient MAC scheme (DPRMA), when integrating voice and video traffic our scheme obtains higher voice capacity and aggregate channel throughput. When integrating all three traffic types, our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load.  相似文献

Integrated services over a shared satellite channel need a MAC protocol that is able to deal with real‐time traffic without substantially affecting the efficiency of the shared medium. Due to its bursty nature, MPEG coded VBR video transmission is one of the most challenging real‐time applications. In this paper, we analyse the statistical performance of a simple allocation method for VBR traffic by using an accurate statistical model of an MPEG‐2 VBR coded movie, whose traffic exhibits a peak to mean ratio of about 4. The results were obtained both analytically and by simulation, and show that our method is suitable for transmitting non‐interactive video and best‐effort traffic on the same satellite link. In this paper, a medium access control protocol is proposed for integrated voice and data services in wireless local networks. Uplink channels for the proposed protocol are composed of time slots with multiple spreading codes per slot based on slotted code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. The proposed protocol uses spreading code sensing and reservation schemes. This protocol gives higher access priority to delay‐sensitive voice traffic than to data traffic. The voice terminal reserves an available spreading code to transmit multiple voice packets during a talkspurt. On the other hand, the data terminal transmits a packet without making a reservation over one of the available spreading codes that are not used by voice terminals. In this protocol, voice packets do not come into collision with data packets. The numerical results show that this protocol can increase the system capacity for voice service by applying the reservation scheme. The performance for data traffic will decrease in the case of high voice traffic load because of its low access priority. But it shows that the data traffic performance can be increased in proportion to the number of spreading codes.  相似文献

Applications of video streaming and real‐time gaming, which generate large amounts of real‐time traffic in the network, are expected to gain considerable popularity in Long Term Evolution networks. Maintaining the QoS such as packet delay, packet loss ratio, median, and cell border throughput requirements in networks dominated by real time traffic, is critical. The existing dimensioning methodology does not consider QoS parameters of real‐time traffic in network dimensioning. Moreover, exhaustive and time‐consuming simulations are normally required to evaluate the performance and QoS of real‐time services. To overcome this problem, we propose an improved radio network dimensioning framework that considers the QoS of real‐time traffic in network dimensioning. In this framework, an analytical model is proposed to evaluate the capacity and performance of real‐time traffic dominant Long Term Evolution networks. The proposed framework provides a fast and accurate means of finding the trade‐off between system load, packet delay, packet loss ratio, required median, and cell border throughput. It also provides network operators with an analytical means for obtaining the minimum number of sites required by jointly considering coverage, capacity and QoS requirements. IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) have reached an important stage and become a common technology for wireless access due to its low cost, ease of deployment, and mobility support. In parallel with the extensive growth of WLANs, the development of an efficient medium access control protocol that provides both high throughput performance for data traffic and quality of service support for real‐time applications has become a major focus in WLAN research. The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Functions (DCF/EDCA) provide contention‐based distributed channel access mechanisms for stations to share the wireless medium. However, performance of these mechanisms may drop dramatically because of high collision probabilities as the number of active stations increases. In this paper, we propose an adaptive collision‐free MAC adaptation. The proposed scheme prevents collisions and allows stations to enter the collision‐free state regardless of the traffic load (saturated or unsaturated) and the number of stations on the medium. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme dramatically enhances the overall throughput and supports quality of service for real‐time services over 802.11‐based WLANs. The IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) media access control (MAC) specification is a hybrid protocol of random access and polling when both distributed coordination function (DCF) and point coordination function (PCF) are used. Data traffic is transmitted with the DCF, while voice transmission is carried out with the PCF. Based on the performance analysis of the MAC protocol for integrated data and voice transmission by simulation, this paper puts forward a self‐adaptive transmission scheme to support multi‐service over the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The simulation results show that, on the premise of satisfying the maximum allowable delay of packet voice, the self‐adaptive transmission scheme can improve the data traffic performance and increase the WLAN capacity through dynamic and appropriate adjustment of the protocol parameters. Especially, voice traffic is sensitive to delay jitter, and the self‐adaptive scheme can effectively decrease it. Satellite-switched code-division multiple access is a system proposed for geostationary fixed satellite service. SS/CDMA provides both multiple access and switching to a multibeam satellite. In this article we present the system architecture and performance. The SS/CDMA consist of the common air interface (CAI) and the onboard code switching mechanism. The CAI provides signaling control and traffic channels. Traffic channel access and modulation is based on a spectrally efficient CDMA scheme. The satellite code-division switch (CDS) routes calls from an uplink to a downlink beam without onboard demodulation and channel decoding. This system operates with demand assignment control; that is, channel bandwidth and switch connections are only assigned per user request. The system can offer a wide variety of bit rates with wireline quality of service. The services provided are circuit-switched calls for voice data and video, and packet-switched for data. As shown, the proposed SE-CDMA can achieve high capacity and very low bit error rates at low signal-to-noise ratio. Next‐generation wireless networks (NGWN) will be heterogeneous, comprising of a number of radio access technologies (RATs) co‐existing in the same geographical area. In NGWN, joint call admission control (JCAC) algorithms are required to select the most appropriate RAT for each incoming call. It is envisaged that these JCAC algorithms will be user‐centric (i.e. will consider users' preferences in making RAT selection decisions) in order to enhance user satisfaction. However, user‐centric JCAC algorithms can lead to highly unbalanced traffic load among the available RATs in NGWN because users act independently, and most of them may prefer to be connected through a particular RAT. Highly unbalanced traffic load in NGWN will result in high overall call blocking/dropping probability and poor radio result utilization. To address this problem, we propose dynamic pricing for balancing traffic load among available RATs in heterogeneous wireless networks where users' preferences are considered in making RAT selection decisions. By dynamically adjusting the service price in each of the available RATs, the proposed user‐centric JCAC scheme evens out the unbalanced traffic load caused by independent users' preferences. The JCAC scheme uses fuzzy multiple attribute decision‐making (MADM) technique to select the most appropriate RAT for each incoming call. We develop a Markov model to evaluate the overall call blocking/dropping probability and percentage load in each RAT in heterogeneous wireless networks. Performance of the proposed JCAC scheme is compared with that of a scheme that does not use dynamic pricing. Simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed JCAC scheme. This paper presents a terminal‐assisted frame‐based packet reservation multiple access (TAF‐PRMA) protocol, which optimizes random access control between heterogeneous traffic aiming at more efficient voice/data integrated services in dynamic reservation TDMA‐based broadband access networks. In order to achieve a differentiated quality‐of‐service (QoS) guarantee for individual service plus maximal system resource utilization, TAF‐PRMA independently controls the random access parameters such as the lengths of the access regions dedicated to respective service traffic and the corresponding permission probabilities, on a frame‐by‐frame basis. In addition, we have adopted a terminal‐assisted random access mechanism where the voice terminal readjusts a global permission probability from the central controller in order to handle the ‘fair access’ issue resulting from distributed queuing problems inherent in the access network. Our extensive simulation results indicate that TAF‐PRMA achieves significant improvements in terms of voice capacity, delay, and fairness over most of the existing medium access control (MAC) schemes for integrated services.  相似文献
