Many Saudi companies, in their journey to improve quality, efficiency and competitiveness, are pursuing and obtaining the ISO 9000 certificate. Many studies have evaluated how to implement ISO 9000 in different sectors, but none have analyzed the effectiveness of ISO 9000 certification (costs and benefits) on improving the overall quality and on meeting expectations. This study addressed these issues by investigating manufacturing organizations in Saudi Arabia that have the ISO 9000 certification. A survey questionnaire was distributed to firms throughout the kingdom. Thirty-two firms participated in the study. Results indicate that increased consistency of operations, improved service, and product quality are among the top motivators for pursuing the ISO certificate. The benefits most often experienced were improved awareness of procedural problems, better management control, keeping existing customers, increased customer satisfaction, and improved customer service. Difficulties experienced during the certification process involved time and cost, but these were not considered to be major problems. A high volume of paperwork was the main problem experienced following initial certification. Respondents in general said that the ISO 9000 certification met their expectations and that their level of satisfaction regarding the impact of ISO 9000 was high. This paper looks at how the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems are implemented in manufacturing. It supports manufacturing companies when modelling a Fulfil Order Process by identifying the links to the ISO 9001 quality standard and highlighting potential impacts from any changes in the process or the standard during a redesign project. Case studies revealed that simply documenting what an organization does in order to satisfy the various elements of ISO 9001 is still a common approach. This results in a process-oriented character only at the documentation stage, and is the result of limited guidance on how to integrate the requirements of ISO 9001 with business processes. This work includes the identification of links between ISO 9001 requirements and a holistic Fulfil Order Process and leads to the development of criteria for modelling a manufacturing business process showing its links to ISO 9001. A modelling technique, named IDEF 9000 , has been developed which will enable companies to take a systemic perspective of a Fulfil Order Process identifying all relevant links to ISO 9001. The evaluation of this technique focuses on IDEF 9000 as a tool that fulfils a common need not fulfilled by existing schemes. IDEF 9000 is based in systems theory and has been validated by review and in practice.  相似文献

A better control of extrusion processes offers clear advantages in the manufacturing of rubber profiles for the automotive industry. This work reports our experience in developing a support system aimed to ease the work of the extruder machinist while improving the quality of the profiles obtained. In order to build the system, an approach based on facts was adopted, following ISO 9000 standard quality principles. The data warehouse service available provided a wealth of information on the conditions of the running processes. The collected data, after being analysed with the appropriate data-mining techniques, allowed us to gain a better understanding of the process and to identify the main causes of variance. In particular, principal components analysis, Sammon projection and several classification techniques were applied for exploratory purposes. Different behaviours could be described for the extrusion process, allowing for the definition of a control strategy and, eventually, the development of a manufacturing support system. The estimates displayed by the system greatly improve the responsiveness of the machinist when the process departs from expected behaviour. The results of using this system in a local factory proved highly satisfactory and encouraging.  相似文献

This study presents an investigation of the relationship between motivation for ISO 9000 certification and internalisation of practices underlying ISO 9000 standards. We use the theoretical lenses of resource-based view and institutional theory to develop our research hypotheses linking motivation with internalisation of ISO 9000 standards. These theories also provide a cogent means to understand the findings from the study. Further, the study presents the performance implications of internationalisation of ISO 9000 standards. A path model is developed that link motivation, internalisation of ISO 9000 standards and performance. Survey data from 281 ISO 9001 certified manufacturing and service organisations in Australia is used to test the research hypotheses of the study. The results suggest that internalisation of practices underlying ISO 9000 standards is affected by functionalist and institutionalist drivers. We find that internalisation of ISO 9000 standards is positively associated with operational performance, and operational performance, in turn, is positively associated with business performance. A closer examination by splitting the sample between high and low performing firms reveals that internalisation of ISO 9000 standards is associated with both functionalist and institutionalist motives in low performing firms, whereas only functionalist driver influence the internalisation of ISO 9000 standards in high performing firms. Over the past decade, the most effective method of implementing a quality system has been ISO 9000 certification. Lebanese companies have recently followed the same path of adopting and improving their status in quality systems. The overwhelming belief is that ISO 9000 is, by itself, not enough. It is a first stepping-stone in the road to business excellence, but ISO 9000 does not guarantee an improvement in the product or service being offered. All indications are that Total Quality Management (TQM) is the method for improving quality as a whole. This improvement is, of course, entirely reliant on the proper implementation and understanding of the scope and underlying objectives. The relatively new adoption of TQM as an effective tool in the struggle to achieve substantial improvements in quality is made clear in the results of a survey that are presented in this article. Recommendations as how to make the transition between ISO 9000 and TQM are made, and a discussion is provided of the need for organizational change, both internal and external, within companies in the Lebanese market. The aim of this work is to present a clear representation of what is actually occurring within the Lebanese domestic market with regards to the understanding the TQM philosophy.  相似文献

This study is aimed to assess and compare the status of quality management (QM) practices in the manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia and the UK, and to develop better insights into the use of and benefits from such QM practices. Furthermore, the intention was to identify the trends for adoption of advanced QM practices such as Lean and Six Sigma. A similar survey instrument was designed and tested in the two countries and data were analysed using SPSS and excel worksheet. The findings confirm that the adoption of Six Sigma is quite slow in Australian and the UK SMEs. ISO 9000 is the most popular QM initiatives in SMEs followed by the recent trend to implement Lean for streamlining business processes. Leadership is critical to the success of any QM practices such as Lean and Six Sigma. Networking with government bodies and academic institutions, and fact-based decision-making emerged as the two new critical success factors for implementing QM in SMEs. Significant improvement in performance metrics was observed in the UK SMEs after implementation of quality initiatives, though similar result was not replicated in the Australian sample.  相似文献

This study proposes an innovative flow management system that includes product (product and logistics) and process (human, information and decision) flow management. We identify three levels of ISO 9000 implementation (basic, advanced and supportive) as enablers, and operational performance as the outcome. The model was tested using the data-set collected from 133 ISO 9001 certified manufacturing companies in Australia. The results show that advanced implementation is positively related to both product and process flow management; supportive implementation is only positively related to process flow management while basic implementation has no significant effect on either product or process flow management. The results also show that both product and process flow management are positively related to operational performance. This study provides managerial guidelines for companies that wish to improve their innovation capabilities through ISO 9000 implementation and flow management. It also contributes to the ISO 9000 and flow management literature.  相似文献

When an organization implements a new managerial practice how should timing affect its decision? Should it be among the organizations that implement the new management practices early, i.e. first movers, or wait for others to implement and implement it a later time, i.e. second movers. The literature's findings with regard to many management practices, especially those that deal with quality, such as total quality management, suggest that while first movers implement a new management practice because of real needs and a high fit between what the practice suggests and their needs (technical efficiency), second movers implement the new management practice because of customer pressure and the fear of falling behind the competition (external pressure). Second movers just mimic first movers, and the new practice does not really fit with their operations. Thus, the new management practice achieves more for the first movers than the second movers. In this paper we ask whether this premise holds for the ISO 9000 quality standard, one which was specified in considerable detail by outside forces but was implemented in many different ways by organizations. Our results are based on a survey of 1150 quality managers who implemented ISO 9000. We find that learning is a more important factor than timing in explaining ISO 9000 performance. First movers achieve a high level of performance because they learn from their own experience, and second movers achieve a high level of performance because they learn from the experience of others. Whether an organization is a first mover or second, the ones that benefit from ISO 9000 are those who learn.  相似文献

While ISO 9000 certification is increasingly becoming 'a passport for business' in the marketplace, its effectiveness in enhancing an organization's performance is highly controversial. In recent years, some researchers have argued that the effectiveness of ISO 9000 is highly dependent on management's attitudes to and understanding of the standard. Specifically, we conducted empirical research in the electronics industry to study how the 'objectives of gaining ISO certification', the 'attitudes to implementation' and 'confidence of understanding the standard' among senior management affect the development of a quality management system (QMS) and subsequently organizational performance. We found that although senior management's confidence in their understanding of the standard and quality management is the most influential factor for the development of their QMS and to the induction of changes in systems, it does not improve organizational performance. On the other hand, organizations that believe the ISO 9000 should be adopted for operational objectives and serve as a system foundation for operations achieve the best organizational performance. Our research suggests that ineffectiveness of the ISO 9000 is largely due to incorrect management objectives and expectations from the standard.  相似文献
