Some trace element contents of samples of human milk, mainly colostrum and transitional milk, collected in the Ljubljana area of Yugoslavia, are reported. Analyses of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, I, Mn, Sb, Se, Sn, V and Zn were performed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis, and the results are discussed briefly in the light of literature values.  相似文献

A prototype miniature neutron source reactor (MNSR) with a thermal neutron flux of 3.0 x 10(11) n cm(-2) s(-1) has been used to determine the concentrations of some nutrient elements leading to short-lived activation products in commercial tea leaf samples from Nigeria. A total of eight elements Al, Ca, Cl, Cu, K, Mg, Mn and Na, that can be routinely used for quality control purposes, were analyzed in this study. Two biological reference materials, tomato leaves (NIST-1573) and citrus leaves (NIST-1572) were used as the standard and quality control materials, respectively. The analytical results show that the average concentrations of Al, Ca, Cl, Cu, K, Mg, Mn and Na in Nigerian tea are slightly higher when compared with a Chinese herbal tea analyzed in this study. The concentration ratios of K/Ca were found to be high in all the samples analyzed suggesting cultivation in potash-rich soils.  相似文献

The concentrations of some elements in a few varieties of cereals and pulses are determined by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis using a single comparator method (k0-standardised NAA method). A total of 15 elements are measured. The method was validated by analysing the Standard Reference Material (SRM-1571) of NIST; the results are within +/-10% of the reported values for the majority of the elements. The measured concentrations of major and minor elements are analysed in terms of the average intake of mineral content and the role of these elements in terms of the nutritional value.  相似文献

This study was performed to investigate the influence of cancer on selected trace elements among Sudanese patients with confirmed breast cancer. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to estimate contents of Se, Zn, Fe, Cr, Rb, Cs, Co and Sc in 40 subjects. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to examine if there was any difference in the concentrations of elements from normal and malignant tissues. It was found that Se, Zn and Cr elements from the malignant tissues are significantly elevated (P < 0.05) compared to the normal tissue. The results obtained have shown consistency with results obtained by some previous studies.  相似文献

This study was performed to examine exposure to typical carcinogenic traffic air pollutants in the city center of an urban area. In all, 123 apartments and 74 nursery schools were analyzed with and without tobacco smoke interference and the households in two measuring periods. Simultaneously, the air outside 61 apartment windows as well as the average daily traffic volume were measured. Elemental carbon (EC), the marker for particulate diesel exhaust and respirable particulate matter (RPM) were determined. The thermographic EC analysis was conducted with and without prior solvent extraction of the soluble carbon fraction. Comparison of these two thermographic EC measurements clearly showed that method-related differences in the results, especially for indoor measurements, when high background loads of organic material were present (e.g. tobacco smoke), existed. Solvent extraction prior to EC determination was therefore appropriate. For the first winter measuring period, the EC concentration levels without solvent extraction in the indoor air were about 50% higher than those measured in the spring/summer period. In the second measuring period (i.e. spring/summer), the median EC concentrations after solvent extraction were 1.9 microg/m3 for smokers' apartments and 2.1 microg/m3 for non-smokers' apartments, with RPM concentrations of 57 and 27 microg/m3, respectively. Nursery schools showed high concentrations with median values of 53 microg/m3 for RPM and 2.9 microg/m3 for EC after solvent extraction. A significant correlation between the fine dust and EC concentrations (after solvent extraction) in the indoor and ambient air was determined. Outdoor EC values were also correlated with the average daily traffic volume. The EC ratios between indoor and ambient concentration showed a median of 0.8 (range: 0.3-4.2) in non-smoker households and 0.9 (range: 0.4-1.5) in smoker apartments. Furthermore, the EC/RPM ratio in indoor and ambient air was 0.01-0.15 (median 0.06) and 0.04-0.37 (median 0.09), respectively. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: In the absence of indoor sources a significant correlation with regard to respirable particulate matter (RPM) and elemental carbon concentrations between the indoor and ambient air of apartments was observed. The high degree of certainty resulting from this correlation underscores the importance of ambient air concentrations for indoor air quality. In nursery schools we found higher concentrations of RPM. An explanation of these results could be the high number of occupants in the room, their activity and the cleaning intensity.  相似文献

The determination of trace elements (TE) in airborne particulate matter collected onto filters requires an accurate evaluation of the entire analytical procedure. Since many elements have to be determined at a few milligrams of air dust at nanogram levels, possible sources of error can arise from uncontrolled parameters such as blank of the filters, sample homogeneity, pre-analytical treatment, primary and comparator standards. These potential critical points are presented here and discussed on the basis of the experience developed in our laboratory in previous studies where several TE monitoring campaigns have been performed for air particulate matter collected in urban as well as in rural residential areas of north Italy. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy (ET-AAS) have been used for the investigation of more than 30 trace elements.  相似文献

Between October 1998 and February 2000, 11 particulate samplings were conducted in an urban area of Rome to evaluate the seasonal trend of PM10 characteristics: seven samplings were made at ground-level and four 30 m above ground level. The samples were analysed by scanning electron microscopy equipped with an EDS X-ray attachment and by transmission electron microscopy and an electron energy-loss spectrometer. The airborne particulate matter was characterised from a physico-chemical point of view to provide information on the particle composition and on the compounds carried on their surface. The data sets, consisting of the atomic concentrations of the constituent chemical elements of the fine (PM3.3) and of the coarse (PM10-3.3) particulate, were subjected to cluster analysis to determine the principal components of PM10. In the particulate matter, the statistical analysis methods allowed us to identify seven groups (clusters) of particles: C-rich particles; carbonates; silica; silicates; sulfates; Fe-rich particles; and metals. Carbonaceous and silicate particles with a surface coating containing S were observed. This sulfur-enriched coating turned out to be a PM3.3 feature strongly dependent upon season.  相似文献

The differences in concentrations of cesium, cobalt, iron, mercury, rubidium, selenium and zinc between serum and plasma were examined with the aid of instrumental neutron activation analysis. Eighty serum and plasma samples obtained from 13 donors were compared. Serum was prepared in plastic tubes immediately after clotting, and plasma was separated with heparin as anticoagulant. No significant differences in the concentrations of cesium, cobalt, mercury and selenium were observed. However, the concentrations of iron, rubidium and zinc were significantly higher in serum than in plasma. The average differences were 322, 12 and 20 ng/ml for iron, rubidium and zinc, respectively. The average differences found for cesium, rubidium and zinc were far below that which can be expected from a complete, or considerable release of these elements from platelets which aggregate or disintegrate during the clotting process in preparing serum.  相似文献

This study has investigated the influence of synoptic weather patterns and long-range transport episodes on the concentration levels of airborne particulate matter (TSP, PM10 and PM2.5) and some major ions (SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-) and NH(4)(+)) at a background rural station in central Spain. Air mass back-trajectories arriving at the site in 1999-2005 have been analysed by statistical methods. First, cluster analysis was used to group trajectories into 8 clusters depending on their direction and speed. Meteorological scenarios associated to each cluster have been obtained and interpreted. Then, the incidence of different air mass transport patterns on particle concentrations and composition recorded at this station was evaluated. This evaluation included PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and chemical composition data, obtained at three representative sites of the Madrid air basin during sampling campaigns carried out in the course of the 1999-2005 period. Finally, a residence time analysis of trajectories was also performed to detect remote sources and transport pathways. Significantly elevated concentrations of TSP and PM10 were observed for Northern African flows as a consequence of the transport of mineral dust. Significant inter-cluster differences were also observed for PM2.5 and secondary inorganic compounds, with the highest concentrations associated with low baric gradient situations and Southern European flows. The residence time analysis confirmed that current TSP and PM10 concentrations in central Spain are likely to be influenced significantly by long-range transport of desert dust from different desert regions in North Africa. Furthermore, emissions from continental Europe with a high time of residence in the western and central areas of the Mediterranean basin, seem to significantly influence PM2.5 and secondary inorganic aerosol concentrations in this region.  相似文献

Tungsten carbide and cobalt are the main components of hard metal alloy while other metals such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, titanium and vanadium are sometimes added in smaller amounts. Exposure to hard metal dusts can induce a lung fibrosis with cobalt playing a major role. In order to provide information on the role that each metal may have in causing this disease, determination of the total content and the distribution of inhaled metals in lung tissue of hard metal workers is of paramount importance. However, samples such as transbronchial biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), often used in the medical diagnosis of pneumoconiosis, only allow for a small amount of material. This calls for sensitive and accurate analytical procedures for microdetermination and distribution of metals in pulmonary tissue and cellular material, such as macrophages. This work proposes a combination of sophisticated analytical techniques such as neutron activation analysis (NAA), currently applied to the determination of the total concentration of more than 30 elements in biological specimens, and PIXE analysis, particularly microPIXE, which has a great potential for microdistribution analysis in small biological samples. Principles and perspectives for the combined use of these techniques for the analysis of human tissue are outlined and discussed. NAA: determination of hard metals in lung tissue are carried out by neutron irradiation (2 × 1014 neutrons cm−2 s−1) in the HFR reactor of Petten. After neutron activation, radiochemical separations of 60Co, 187W, 182Ta, 51Cr followed by computer-based high resolution gamma ray spectrometry allow the measurement of these elements in pulmonary tissues with sensitivities ranging from 10−4 μg (Cr) to 10−6 μg (W). PIXE: this technique is multielemental and of relatively high sensitivity (μg/g) even in small total sample masses of from 10 to 100 μg, thus allowing the analysis of parts of needle biopsies. Whereas PIXE has been successfully applied to many medical problems, its usefulness is limited in the total samples analysis for cobalt-related hard metal disease, due to the low levels of cobalt in tissue combined with severe element interferences from the generally more abundant metal, iron. Nevertheless, microPIXE, a special variety of the method scanning over the sample with a focussed ion beam of about 2 × 2 μm2, could complement the NAA findings in total samples in the sense of achieving a microdistribution analysis of hard metals (including cobalt) in suitable thin tissue sections.The availability of specialized facilities at the JRC such as the powerful HFR reactor (Petten), the NAA laboratories (Ispra) and the microPIXE facility (Geel) could represent a European ‘reference pole’ for the study of metals in tissues of hard metal diseased subjects.  相似文献

A new method using several different chemical scenarios is developed to predict chemical composition of fine (PM2.5) and total (PM10) aerosol. This method improves the accuracy of predicted PM concentrations. The Mesoscale Model version 5 (MM5) and a 3-dimensional Eulerian chemical model (CAMx4.2) are used to predict PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations using gridded input emissions (from the "Total" group) over a 48-72 h time period for Christchurch (New Zealand) for winter 2005. The aerosol concentrations are obtained for four different chemical compositions (chemical scenarios) of the input aerosol emissions. PM2.5 chemical compositions are based on previous Christchurch winter studies and from observations in other countries with similar winter pollution problems, and used in CAMx4.2 to model seven winter 2005 heavy pollution episodes. The error between observed and modelled PM2.5 concentrations is based on predictions of fine aerosol that are derived from linear regression with PM10. It is used to find the minimum difference between modelled and observed PM2.5 for an observation site located in the Christchurch residential area. Combination of the chemical scenarios with analysis of the minimum error is used to create a new complex chemical scenario. The new complex scenario is used to re-calculate all pollution episodes to obtain new values of PM with minimum error compared with observed aerosol concentrations. Mean Absolute Error of the calculated PM2.5 (for all pollution episodes) decreased from 21-24 microg m(-3) to 14-16 microg m(-3) compared with observations. The chemical composition of the modelled PM2.5 is also discussed.  相似文献

Inhalable air particulate matter (APM) was collected in Bahrain from July 31, 1991 to August 4, 1991, during the burning of the oil fields in Kuwait. The filters collected were black and the levels of APM ranged from 139 to 673 micrograms m-3 with an average value of 199 micrograms m-3. APM were analysed for their contents of PAHs, Ni and V. Analysis was carried out for 32 PAHs and total PAHs ranged from 3.1 to 9.1 ng m-3 and averaged 5.3 ng m-3. The highest individual PAH levels were benzo[ghi]perylene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene. The concentration of Ni and V ranged from 7 to 42 and 11 to 42 ng m-3, with an average value of 22 and 26 ng m-3, respectively. A strong correlation was found between Ni and V (r = 0.98, P less than 0.01). The results show that the smoke from burning oil wells in Kuwait has contributed to the concentrations of particulate matter, PAHs, Ni and V in APM in Bahrain.  相似文献

Radioactivation analysis has been used by several workers to determine trace elements in hair. The present work describes investigations on samples of hair from normal and protein-deficient children in Indonesia. The motivation of the work was based on the following reasoning. Hair is a protein which acts as a slow mode of excretion for inorganic elements absorbed from the diet. If the diet is deficient in protein, the excretory pattern may change; for example the hair of protein-deficient children may change colour. It was hoped that some of the changes in metal content might be useful in diagnosing incipient protein deficiency.  相似文献

In this work we apply a trajectory classification approach, aiming at identifying the role exerted by meteorology on air quality in the Naples urban area (Southern Italy). Towards that end, the HYSPLIT (HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model was used; backward trajectories were calculated for the period 1995-2004 and classified, based on a combination of the k-means and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) approaches. The robustness of the classification was strengthened using an ensemble approach, based on back-trajectories calculated for different (in the horizontal and vertical directions) arrival points around Naples and different arrival time. Eight clusters were identified, and the effects on air quality were evaluated. We focused on ozone and PM10 concentration, and evaluated to what extent the prevailing meteorological conditions were associated with different levels and temporal profiles of these two pollutants. We found that ozone and PM10 profiles share some similarities since they both load high during anti-cyclonic, subsiding conditions, a common situation during the summer months. During these days stagnation and recirculation effects enhance the concentration of locally emitted air pollutant. We also found that ozone exhibits a marked seasonal cycle, whose maxima appears during the summer season, but the discrimination with respect to the area of origin indicated the presence of a second relative maxima, appearing early during the spring season. PM10 pollution levels often exceed the annual limit of 50 microg/m(3). The days associated with a significant exogenous contribution from the North African countries were identified.  相似文献

In order to investigate the chemical form of vanadium in freshwater, an analytical method has been developed using 48V radiotracer which involves the absorption of the sample on Chelex 100 and Dowex 1-x8 columns followed by the selective elution of the different vanadium species and their assay by neutron activation analysis. Application of the method to identify the chemical species of vanadium in different freshwaters indicates that the element is present in tetravalent cationic and pentavalent anionic forms as well as in a neutral complexed form. The absence of the complex form in freshwater, collected in an unpolluted area, suggests that this type of vanadium could be an index of long-term pollution of freshwater.  相似文献

The levels of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, caesium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gold, iron, lanthanum, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, phosphorus, rubidium, scandium, selenium, silver, tellurium, tin, tungsten and zinc in the kidney, liver and lungs of autopsy specimens from exposed workers in North Sweden, as well as from a control group, have been assayed quantitatively. The workers had been exposed to several elements and their compounds, e.g. lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium, for long periods in arsenic, lead or selenium plants and in a lead or copper smelter.The chemical analysis was by neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Median levels of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lanthanum, lead or selenium in kidney, liver or lungs in the exposed worker group were found to be about 2 to 16 times as great as the corresponding levels for the control group. Long biological half-life values were observed for these elements, especially in lung tissue.  相似文献
