Rats received unsignaled shocks in an observation chamber, with different groups varying with respect to time between shocks. Twenty-four hours later the rats were returned to the observation chamber for a test of conditioning to contextual stimuli. The freezing response served as the dependent variable. In Experiment 1 we found that distributed shock trials (60 s) resulted in more context conditioning than did massed trials (3 s or 6 s). Experiment 2 replicated this intertrial interval (ITI) effect when total time in the context was equated for the massed and distributed groups. The observed beneficial effect of distributed practice for conditioning to contextual stimuli runs counter to the predictions of Pavlovian conditioning models that posit that the benefit of distributed conditioning trials for discrete conditional stimuli arises because of decreased contextual conditioning with longer ITIs (e.g., Gibbon & Balsam, 1981; Rescorla & Wagner, 1972). Although the basic effect of enhanced performance with longer ITIs is consistent with Wagner's rehearsal model (e.g., 1978), three findings argue against such an account. First, posttrial stimulation did not reduce the benefit obtained from distributed trials (Experiment 3). Second, intertrial distractors did not improve performance of the animals subjected to massed trials (Experiment 4). In four experiments we investigated whether signaled and unsignaled unconditional stimuli (US) presentations resulted in differential context conditioning. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that the presence of a tone during grain presentation facilitated the formation of tone–food associations in pigeons. Experiment 2 also showed that the acquisition of associative value by the tone did not diminish associations between context and the US. Experiment 3 showed that signaled USs did not interfere with the acquisition of context–US associations, and Experiment 4 showed that even when the signal was extensively pretrained, context–US associations could not be blocked. The results of these experiments are inconsistent with conditioning models that require competition between cues and contexts for associative value. The influence of trial spacing on simple conditioning is well established: When successive reinforced conditioned stimulus, CS+, trials are separated by a short interval (massed training), conditioned responding emerges less rapidly than when such trials are separated by longer intervals (spaced training). This study examined the influence of trial spacing on the acquisition of an appetitive visual discrimination in rats. Experiments 1 and 2 established that massed training facilitates the acquisition of such discriminations. The results of subsequent experiments demonstrated that this trial-spacing effect reflects the proximity of nonreinforced, CS-, trials to preceding (Experiment 3) and signaled (Experiment 4) presentations of the reinforcer. Standard models of Pavlovian conditioning neglect local effects of unsignaled unconditioned stimuli (USs) on learning and performance. Using the approach-withdrawal behavior of pigeons toward keylights as conditioned stimuli (CSs), the authors varied the specific times (5–210 s) that USs occurred before or after a CS. Withdrawal from a CS generally increased as the time between a US before and/or after the CS was lengthened. Combinations of 2 distant USs produced more withdrawal from the CS than either US alone, whereas combinations of a distant and a nearby US yielded behavior intermediate between that for either US alone. Postacquisition retardation tests supported similar conclusions. Based on the temporal isolation of CSs and USs, a tentative model was offered to summarize these data. The results and the model suggest that a more molecular, possibly perceptual approach to Pavlovian excitation and inhibition is needed. In Experiment 1, delayed reward generated low response rates relative to immediate reward delivered with the same frequency. Lister rats exposed to delayed reward subsequently responded at a higher rate in extinction if they received nonreinforced exposure to the conditioned context after instrumental training and prior to test, compared with animals that received home cage exposure. In Experiment 2, a signaled delay of reinforcement resulted in higher rates than an unsignaled delay. Nonreinforced exposure to the conditioning context elevated response rate for subjects in the unsignaled condition relative to a home cage group, but had no effect on response rates for subjects that had received the signaled delay. In Experiment 3, following an unsignaled reinforcement delay, groups receiving either no event or signaled food in the context responded faster in extinction than groups receiving no context exposure or unsignaled food. The nonpeptide δ-opioid agonist BW373U86 (3 to 300 μg/kg) was tested in rabbits for effects on heart rate, cardiac orienting and Pavlovian conditioned responses to tones, and unconditioned cardiac and somatomotor responses to signaled and unsignaled shocks. BW373U86 did not alter shock-evoked somatomotor reflexes and had few effects on the development or retention of Pavlovian conditioned heart rate discrimination. However, BW373U86 appeared to modulate cardiac conditioning indirectly, by facilitating sympathetic reflexes evoked by the signaled stressor, and the dose effect was ∪-shaped within the dose range tested. The pronounced tachycardiac effect of BW373U86 was completely blocked, or rapidly reversed, by the selective δ-opiate antagonist naltrindole. BW373U86 was more potent in increasing signaled than unsignaled shock-evoked tachycardia, suggesting release of an endogenous substance (e.g., a δ-opioid) because of the Pavlovian conditioning contingency. The ability of auditory stimuli to modulate rats' tendency to orient to visual targets was assessed. In Experiment 1, trials where an auditory stimulus (A) signaled one visual array (X) were intermixed with unsignaled presentations of a second array (Y). Comparison of the orienting responses (ORs) to X and Y revealed that A produced a transient (unconditioned) and an emerging (conditioned) disruptive influence on the OR to X. In Experiments 2 and 3, trials where A signaled X were intermixed with others where another auditory stimulus (B) signaled Y. Stimulus A's ability to modulate the OR to X was then assessed by presenting A prior to test arrays containing both X and Y Control rats were more likely to orient to Y than X (Experiments 2 and 3) and rats with excitotoxic lesions of the hippocampus were more likely to orient to X than Y (Experiment 3). These results show that auditory stimuli exert distinct modulatory influences on the OR to visual stimuli with which they are associated. Gerbils learned to approach a spatial-olfactory stimulus that signaled access to their pairmate. Experiments 1 and 3 used a discrimination procedure in which 1 conditioned stimulus (the CS+) was presented immediately before access to the pairmate and another (the CS-) was presented alone. Both male and female gerbils came to approach the CS+ sooner than the CS- and spent more time near the CS+ than the CS-. Discrimination learning was facilitated by making the CS+ and CS- spatially distinct (Experiment 3). Learning also was demonstrated in male gerbils, using a between-subjects design with a single CS. Pairing the CS with the opportunity for social interaction resulted in greater approach to the CS within 10 trials than presenting the CS and social opportunity in an unpaired fashion (Experiment 2). These findings demonstrate social-affiliative learning in the Mongolian gerbil. Similarities and differences between these findings and sexual conditioning effects in other species are discussed.  相似文献

Three appetitive Pavlovian conditioning experiments with rats examined the associability of stimuli A and B that had a history of compound conditioning (AB+), relative to stimuli X and Y that had a history of conditioning in isolation (X+, Y+). Following this training, Experiment 1 revealed that conditioned responding was higher to X and Y than to A and B (overshadowing). In a subsequent AY+, AX?, BY? test discrimination, the AY/BY discrimination was solved more readily than the AY/AX discrimination. In Experiment 2, following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and Y were presented as a compound and signaled the availability of reinforcement upon the performance of an instrumental response. Test trials in which A and Y were presented alone, and in extinction, revealed that A acquired greater control of instrumental responding than Y. Experiment 3 revealed that following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and B served as more effective discriminative stimuli for instrumental responding than X and Y. Overall, these results imply that the associability of stimuli conditioned in compound is higher than stimuli conditioned in isolation. Electrolytic lesions of the dorsal hippocampus (DH) produce deficits in both the acquisition and expression of conditional fear to contextual stimuli in rats. To assess whether damage to DH neurons is responsible for these deficits, we performed three experiments to examine the effects of neurotoxic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) lesions of the DH on the acquisition and expression of fear conditioning. Fear conditioning consisted of the delivery of signaled or unsignaled footshocks in a novel conditioning chamber and freezing served as the measure of conditional fear. In Experiment 1, posttraining DH lesions produced severe retrograde deficits in context fear when made either 1 or 28, but not 100, days following training. Pretraining DH lesions made 1 week before training did not affect contextual fear conditioning. Tone fear was impaired by DH lesions at all training-to-lesion intervals. In Experiment 2, posttraining (1 day), but not pretraining (1 week), DH lesions produced substantial deficits in context fear using an unsignaled shock procedure. In Experiment 3, pretraining electrolytic DH lesions produced modest deficits in context fear using the same signaled and unsignaled shock procedures used in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. Electrolytic, but not neurotoxic, lesions also increased pre-shock locomotor activity. Collectively, this pattern of results reveals that neurons in the DH are not required for the acquisition of context fear, but have a critical and time-limited role in the expression of context fear. The normal acquisition and expression of context fear in rats with neurotoxic DH lesions made before training may be mediated by conditioning to unimodal cues in the context, a process that may rely less on the hippocampal memory system.  相似文献

Evaluated backward conditioning of appetitive jaw movement and aversive nictitating membrane responses in rabbits, using 3 procedures: test trials, forward acquisition of the same response, and crossmotivational acquisition of the other response system. In both experiments, backward conditioning consisted of 3 conditioned stimulus/stimuli (CS) alone and 22 CS and unconditioned stimulus/stimuli (UCS) pairings. Contrasting the backward conditioning group with explicitly unpaired and no-treatment controls revealed that backward pairings produced no associative effects. The forward acquisition and crossmotivational acquisition tests suggest that excitatory backward acquisition of jaw movement was obtained. The forward acquisition test identified weak inhibitory conditioning of nictitating membrane responses, but the crossmotivational test implicated excitatory conditioning. Experiment 1 used Pavlovian conditioning procedures to show that rats formed distinct memorial representations of 2 (peanut oil and sucrose pellets) unconditioned stimuli (USs) that could be activated by 2 different conditioned stimuli (CSs). After training in Experiment 2, rats injected with the lipid antimetabolite Na-2-mercaptoacetate (MA) responded more to the CS for oil than to the CS for sucrose. This pattern was not shown by rats that received isotonic saline or systemic 2-deoxy-d-glucose (a glucose antimetabolite). By contrast, intracerebroventricular infusion of the glucose antimetabolite 5-thioglucose selectively promoted responding to the CS for sucrose (Experiment 4). Thus, lipoprivic and glucoprivic treatments selectively promoted the activation of the memories of fat and carbohydrate USs, respectively. In Experiment 3, the capacity of MA to augment responding to a CS for oil was abolished for rats that received subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation. This indicates that the capacity of lipoprivic signals to selectively activate the representations of fat USs may depend on vagal afferent fibers. The effects of altering the contingency between the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (US) on the acquisition of autoshaped responding was investigated by changing the frequency of unsignaled USs during the intertrial interval. The addition of the unsignaled USs had an effect on acquisition speed comparable with that of massing trials. The effects of these manipulations can be understood in terms of their effect on the amount of information (number of bits) that the average CS conveys to the subject about the timing of the next US. Five autoshaping experiments with pigeons exposed excitatory and neutral stimuli to treatments that made those stimuli uninformative with respect to the unconditioned stimulus (US). Experiment 1 found that adding sufficient USs in the absence of the conditioned stimulus (CS) to make it uninformative prevented conditioning of that CS but did not undermine conditioning of a previously trained CS. Experiment 2 found a similar data pattern when an excitatory or neutral B stimulus was embedded in an A+/BA+ paradigm with an excitatory A. Experiments 3–5 verified that finding when the salience of A and B or the conditioning level of B was varied. These results, which are largely unanticipated by current theories of conditioning, suggest that the consequences of making a stimulus redundant depend on its conditioning level prior to that treatment. The effects of presenting various episodes after serial presentation of two conditioned stimuli (CS2-CS1 sequences) on second-order conditioning to CS2 were examined in three experiments using rat subjects in an appetitive conditioning situation. In Experiment 1, presentation of food unconditioned stimuli (USs) immediately after CS2-CS1 sequences interfered with second-order conditioning of CS2. In Experiment 2, postsequence presentation of a "surprising" US interfered with second-order conditioning more than did presentation of an "expected" US; similarly, less second-order conditioning of CS2 was observed when postsequence nonpresentation of a US was surprising than when US omission was expected. In Experiment 3, the interfering effect of US presentation on second-order conditioning was smaller when a brief delay was introduced between presentation of the CS2-CS-1 sequence and the US. The results are discussed in terms of an information-processing theory recently proposed by Wagner and his colleagues.  相似文献

The role of conscious awareness in human Pavlovian conditioning was examined in 2 experiments using masked fear-relevant (snakes and spiders; Experiments 1 and 2) and fear-irrelevant (flowers and mushrooms; Experiment 1) pictures as conditioned stimuli, a mild electric shock as the unconditioned stimulus, and skin conductance responses as the primary dependent variable. The conditioned stimuli were presented briefly (30 ms) and were effectively masked by an immediately following masking stimulus. Experiment 1 demonstrated nonconscious conditioning to fear-relevant but not to fear-irrelevant stimuli. Even though the participants could not recognize the stimuli in Experiment 2, they differentiated between masked stimuli predicting and not predicting shocks in expectancy ratings. Two studies investigated the effects of conditioning to masked stimuli on visuospatial attention. During the conditioning phase, masked snakes and spiders were paired with a burst of white noise, or paired with an innocuous tone, in the conditioned stimulus (CS)+ and CS- conditions, respectively. Attentional allocation to the CSs was then assessed with a visual probe task, in which the CSs were presented unmasked (Experiment 1) or both unmasked and masked (Experiment 2), together with fear-irrelevant control stimuli (flowers and mushrooms). In Experiment 1, participants preferentially allocated attention to CS+ relative to control stimuli. Experiment 2 suggested that this attentional bias depended on the perceived aversiveness of the unconditioned stimulus and did not require conscious recognition of the CSs during both acquisition and expression. Three experiments were conducted to ask if conditioned emotional responses (CERs) controlled by contextual cues modulate the acquisition of eyelid conditioned responses (CRs) to discrete conditioned stimuli (CSs). Experiment 1 showed that 30-s auditory stimuli that were paired with aversive shocks to one paraorbital region or the other controlled discriminated CERs, as measured by potentiation of a startle response. In Experiments 2 and 3, similarly trained 30-s stimuli served as contexts in which 1,050-ms CSs were paired with a paraorbital unconditioned stimulus (US). Reinforced contexts both impaired (Experiments 2A and 2B) and facilitated (Experiment 3B) acquisition of the eyeblink CR, depending on the locus of the USs involved. The data are consistent with the interpretation that CERs controlled by contextual cues facilitate CR acquisition, but do so in the face of blocking effects of CR tendencies also conditioned to the contextual cues. In the random control procedure, responding to a conditioned stimulus (target CS) is prevented when the probability of unsignaled, unconditioned stimuli (UCS) in the intertrial interval (ITI) is equal to the probability of the UCS in the presence of the target CS. Three experiments used an autoshaping procedure with White Carneaux pigeons to examine the effects of the temporal duration of signals for the ITI UCS (cover CSs) and for concomitant periods of nonreinforcement. In Experiment 1, a short duration cover, but not a long duration cover, resulted in responding to the target CS. In Experiment 2, an explicit CS– cue during periods of nonreinforcement did not affect target acquisition. In Experiment 3, a long CS–, but not a short cover CS, was a sufficient condition for the acquisition of responding to the target CS. These results imply that the acquisition of responding to a target CS requires a discriminable period of nonreinforcement that is long relative to the target CS duration. The authors performed a differential conditioning experiment in 30 rats, using 2 odors as the conditioned stimuli (CS+ and CS-) and hypoxia (8% O2) as the unconditioned stimulus. Vanillin was the CS+ and rose the CS- in half of the rats, and vice versa in the other half. Fifteen paired CS+/hypoxia trials and 15 CS- only trials were performed in random order, followed by 3 CS+ only and 3 CS- only trials to test for conditioning. The increase in ventilation from prestimulus levels averaged 116 +/- 85% in response to CS+ versus 55 +/- 36% in response to CS-. This effect was supported by the significant Pre-Post Stimulus x CS Type interaction for this variable (p < .003). The data confirm the sensitivity of breathing to conditioning processes and also indirectly support the hypothesis that feedforward responses may complement feedback reflex pathways in respiratory homeostasis.  相似文献
