The main by‐product from the table olive canning industry is the stone with some residual olive flesh. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the composition – phenolic compounds (hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleuropein) and tocopherol – and the antioxidant activity in different fractions (flesh, stone and seed) from the table olive by‐product and the whole by‐product. The highest amounts of phenolic compounds (1710.0 ± 33.8 mg kg?1) as well as the highest antioxidant activity (8226.9 ± 9.9 hydroxytyrosol equivalents mg kg?1) were obtained in the seed. The highest amounts of hydroxytyrosol (854.8 ± 66.0 mg kg?1) and tyrosol (423.6 ± 56.9 mg kg?1) were found in the whole by‐product from the pepper stuffed olives, while the stone without seed had the maximum oleuropein content (750.2 ± 85.3 mg kg?1). α‐Tocopherol values were between 79.8 ± 20.8 mg kg?1 in the seed of the olive stone and 6.2 ± 1.2 mg kg?1 in the whole by‐product from the anchovy‐stuffed olives. In light of the results obtained, it would seem possible to use table olive by‐product as a source of natural antioxidants in foods, cosmetics or pharmaceutical products, thus contributing to diminishing the environmental impact of table olive by‐product and to its revalorisation.  相似文献

Nine commercial varieties of tomato (Rambo, Senior, Ramillete, Liso, Pera, Canario, Durina, Daniella and Remate) produced in Spain were analysed for their lycopene content, content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. The phenolic compounds were characterised as flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol and naringenin) and hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic and p‐coumaric acids). Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH and ABTS assays. The concentrations of lycopene and the various phenolic compounds as well as the antioxidant activity were significantly influenced by the tomato variety. Quercetin, the most abundant flavonoid, was found in concentrations ranging between 7.19 and 43.59 mg kg?1 fresh weight, while naringenin levels were lower than 12.55 mg kg?1. The most abundant hydroxycinnamic acid was chlorogenic acid, with values ranging from 14 to 32 mg kg?1 fresh weight, followed by caffeic acid, while p‐coumaric and ferulic acids showed similar concentrations lower than 5 mg kg?1. The highest content of lycopene was found in Ramillete, Pera and Durina (>50 mg kg?1 fresh weight), while the concentration in the other varieties was between 50 and 30 mg kg?1, with the exception of Liso (less than 20 mg kg?1). The antioxidant activity of tomato extracts varied with the tomato variety and the assay method used. Individual compounds found to be significantly related to antioxidant capacity were lycopene and ferulic and caffeic acids, but not quercetin and chlorogenic acid. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The bioactive compounds of 16 tomato cultivars, grown in the same field for 2 years (2003 and 2004) were investigated. Lycopene (5.7–26.3 mg kg?1) was the predominant carotenoid, while β-carotene (2.1–11.2 mg kg?1) and a small amount of lutein (0.02–0.49 mg kg?1) were found in all tomato cultivars. Kagome 77, the richest source of total carotenoids and L-ascorbic acid, also showed the highest antioxidant activity. β-Carotene and lutein contents of tomatoes differed between 2 years statistically. Antioxidant activities of tomatoes were found between 48 and 118 μmol TEAC 100 g?1. A significant correlation was only observed between L-ascorbic acid (2.2–13.8 mg 100 g?1) and antioxidant activity using TEAC assay.  相似文献

This study investigated the organic acid and phenolic compound levels, total phenolic (TP) and antioxidant capacity (TEAC) of three miniature tomato cultivars grown on a farmer’s field with three different fertilizer applications. Analysis of phenolic compound (protocatechuic, vanillic, gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, syringic, p-coumaric and ferulic acid, rutin, quercetin, catechin and phloridzine) organic acid (citric, tartaric, malic, succinic and fumaric acid), TP and TEAC levels in fruit samples showed statistically significant (p?<?0.05) differences between tomato cultivars and fertilizer applications. Rutin and chlorogenic acid were the predominant phenolic compounds found in all three cultivars. The highest rutin value (50.48 mg kg?1 FW) was found in the Black Zebra fertilized with DAP plus organic and biochemical fertilizers and the lowest (20.52 mg kg?1 FW) in the Black Zebra fertilized with DAP only. The highest chlorogenic acid value (63.31 mg kg?1 FW) was found in the sweet pea currant fertilized with DAP only and the lowest (21.06 mg kg?1 FW) in the Black Zebra fertilized with DAP plus chemical fertilizer. Citric acid content was the dominant organic acid in all three cultivars, with the highest citric acid value (6439.50 mg kg?1 FW) found in the Sweet Pea Currant cherry tomato fertilized with DAP plus organic and biochemical fertilizers and the lowest (2435.20 mg kg?1 FW) in the Window Box Yellow fertilized with DAP plus chemical fertilizer. Total phenolic and antioxidant levels in the window box yellow were significantly lower as compared to the Black Zebra and sweet pea currant varieties for all three fertilizer applications.  相似文献

Two extractions with methanol and water were used to determine the antioxidant and binding properties of some berries as a supplement to food. Fluorometry, FTIR spectra and radical scavenging assays were used for characterisation of bioactive compounds (polyphenols, flavonoids, flavanols and tannins) and the levels of their antioxidant activities (AAs). The contents of bioactive compounds and AAs in water and methanol polyphenol extracts in gooseberries, blueberries and cranberries differed, but not always significantly. Water extracts of gooseberries showed the lowest amounts of polyphenols (mg GAE g?1), 6.24 ± 0.6, and flavonoids (mg CE g?1), 0.29 ± 0.01, and AAs (μMTE g?1) determined by DPPH, FRAP, ABTS and CUPRAC assays such as 6.05 ± 0.6, 8.07 ± 0.9, 18.70 ± 1.8 and 13.44 ± 1.2, respectively, in comparison with blueberries and cranberries. Polyphenol content highly correlated with antioxidant activity (R2 from 0.94 to 0.81). The quenching properties of berries were studied by the interaction of water and methanol polyphenol extracts with HSA by 3D fluorescence. In conclusion, the bioactivity of gooseberries was lower than in blueberries and cranberries. Gooseberries can be used as a new source for food consumption and supplementation based on their antioxidant and binding properties. 3D fluorescence spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy can be applied as additional analytical tools for rapid estimation of the quality of different food products.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The higher consumption of vegetables and fruits could be a practical approach to the management of oxidative stress. The present study sought to compare the antioxidant properties of polar and non‐polar constituents of some tropical green leafy vegetables (Struchium sparganophora, Amaranthus cruentus, Telfairia occidentalis, Ocimum gratissimum, Talinium triangulare, Cnidoscolous aconitifolius and Vernonia amygdalina). RESULTS: The polar antioxidant constituents (total phenol (3330–17 572 mg kg?1), total flavonoid (1668–4306 mg kg?1) and vitamin C (224–642 mg kg?1)) were higher than the non‐polar antioxidant constituents (total phenol (703–3115 mg kg?1), total flavonoid (130–1303 mg kg?1) and carotenoids (132–1303 mg kg?1)). Furthermore, the polar extracts had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging ability (except T. triangulare), total antioxidant capacity, reducing power (except T. triangulare and A. cruentus) and Fe(II) chelating ability (except C. aconitifolius and S. sparganophora). However, the polar and non‐polar extract of O. gratissimum had the highest antioxidant properties while that of T. triangulare had the least antioxidant properties. CONCLUSION: The polar extract of most of the vegetables had higher antioxidant properties than the non‐polar extract, with O. gratissimum extracts having the highest antioxidant properties. The high temperature antioxidant efficiency of α‐tocopherol, α‐tocotrienol and a mixture of both on hazelnut oil were evaluated. Crude hazelnut oil (HZO), crude hazelnut oil treated with alumina (THZO), as well as three samples of THZO to which 150 mg kg?1 of α‐tocopherol, 140 mg kg?1 of α‐tocotrienol or a mixture containing 70 mg kg?1 of α‐tocopherol and 70 mg kg?1 of α‐tocotrienol, were added and submitted to thermal treatment at 180°C for 18 h. The addition of tocols to THZO decreased the formation of polar compounds and increased its oxidative stability in all the systems studied. However, α‐tocopherol showed a higher antioxidant capacity than α‐tocotrienol at high temperature. In addition, α‐tocotrienol showed a more rapid degradation rate than α‐tocopherol under the conditions studied. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effect of cultivation system on phenolic profile, antioxidant capacity and antiproliferation activity in black and red currants was evaluated. Results from this study showed that Ribes fruit grown in organic system posses significantly higher total phenolics, especially anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP) than fruit grown in conventional system. Phenolic compounds were systematically identified and characterised by UPLC/MS Q‐TOF. The mean value of total polyphenol content in organically grown currants was similar but statistically higher compared with the conventional cultivation (11831.0 and 1543.0 mg/kg of d.m., respectively). The total values of the anthocyanins in ‘Ben Hope’, ‘Ben Alder’, ‘Titania’ and ‘Rondom’ from organic and conventional farms were 1044.5 vs. 1012.4; 1568.3 vs. 1260.4; 1417.2 vs. 1382.2; and 51.8 vs. 57.9 mg kg?1 of d.m., respectively. Conventionally grown red currant had higher anthocyanin content than organically grown red currant (11.8%) but, however, organic fruits of red currant had 2.7 times higher content of oligomeric procyanidins than fruits coming from conventional cultivation. DPPH radical scavenging activity of currant varied from 28.29 to 37.08 mmol Trolox kg?1 (mean 31.20) for organic fruits and from 12.67 to 31.18 mmol Trolox kg?1 (mean 25.76) for conventional fruits. Moreover, all currants from organic cultivation possess higher ferric reducing capacity than conventionally grown fruits. It appeared that extracts of red Ribes cv. ‘Rondom’ coming from organic cultivation revealed stronger antiproliferative effect in comparison with conventional cultivation. However, a similar profile of activity was observed for ‘Ben Hope’, ‘Ben Alder’ and ‘Titania’ independently of the type of cultivation. These results indicate that the cultivation technique had important effect on the ranking of the cultivar systems.  相似文献

In this study, antioxidant and antihemolytic activities of ethanolic extract of flowers, leaves, and stems of Hyssopus officinalis L. Var. angustifolius were investigated employing different in vitro assay systems. Extracts showed good antioxidant activity. IC50 for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical-scavenging activity were 148.8 ± 4.31 μg mL?1 for flowers, 79.9 ± 2.63 μg mL?1 for stems, and 208.2 ± 6.45 μg mL?1 for leaves. All extracts showed moderate iron (II) chelating ability. Extracts exhibited good antioxidant activity in the hemoglobin-induced linoleic acid model and also they were capable of scavenging hydrogen peroxide in a concentration dependent manner. Extracts showed good antihemolytic activity againts hydrogen peroxide-induced hemolysis (IC50 were 48.51 ± 2.27 μg mL?1 for flowers, 19.47 ± 0.73 μg mL?1 for leaves, and 63.1 ± 2.65 μg mL?1 for stems). The total amount of phenolic compounds in the extracts was determined as gallic acid equivalents and total flavonoid content was calculated as quercetin equivalents from a calibration curve.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Total phenolics content, antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of the methanol extracts from leaf parts of 13 Korean traditional salad plants were investigated in order to determine their properties. RESULTS: The highest phenolics content (mg ferulic acid equivalents kg?1 dry weight (d.w.), omit one) was found in methanol extracts from Polygonum aviculare, at 293.7 ± 6.0, followed by Euonymus alatus, at 250.7 ± 3.3, Saxifraga stolonifera, at 125.0 ± 8.1 and Ligularia fischeri, at 122.5 ± 5.9. The methanol plant extracts dose‐dependently increased free radical scavenging activity. Methanol extracts of Polygonum aviculare, Euonymus alatus and Saxifraga stolonifera, at 31 mg kg?1, exhibited the highest 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (%) by 90.8 ± 4.2, 85.7 ± 3.9 and 64.1 ± 3.2, respectively. According to 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the methanol extracts from Portulaca oleracea (IC50 < 25.0 µg mL?1) showed the highest cytotoxicity against Calu‐6, followed by Plantago asiatica (49.2 µg mL?1) and Osmunda japonica (89.6 µg mL?1). CONCLUSION: Total phenolics content of the tested plant extracts was correlated with the DPPH radical scavenging activity, suggesting the phenolics compounds are contributing to the antioxidant properties of Korean salad plants. The leaf parts of the 13 Korean traditional salad plants described here that are currently used as foods may also provide some benefit to human health, and research into their potential benefits as preventative and/or therapeutic agents is warranted. Greenhouse tomato samples (n = 20) was analyzed before and after peel removal in order to determine surface auxin residue. Mean 4‐CPA residue levels of greenhouse tomatoes with and without peels were 0.383 ± 0.123 mg kg?1 and 0.241 ±0.085 mg kg?1, respectively. This difference (36 ±13%) was statistically significant. The frequency distribution curve of tomatoes with peel had a peak point at 4‐CPA reside interval of 0.4‐ < 0.5 mg kg?1 tomato, and shifted back to 4‐CPA residue interval of 0.2‐ < 0.3 mg kg?1 for tomatoes without peel. Percentage of samples having 4‐CPA level lower than the critical concentration of 0.5 mg kg?1 was 80% before peel removal, but increased to 100% upon being peeled. The mean 4‐CPA residue of peels was roughly estimated to be 3.449 mg kg?1 peel based on peeled versus nonpeeled fruit residue.  相似文献

Lycopene, a natural red pigment found in tomato, is correlated with reduced incidence of some cancers. Forty tomato varieties, including cluster F1 hybrid tomatoes, round breeding line tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) and cherry tomato types (L esculentum var cerasiforme), grown under greenhouse and field conditions were evaluated for their lycopene content using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometry. Lycopene content varied significantly among the tomato varieties, with cherry tomato types having the highest lycopene content. Greenhouse‐grown cluster and round tomatoes contained more lycopene (mean = 30.3 mg kg?1) than field‐grown tomatoes (mean = 25.2 mg kg?1), whereas cherry tomato types had a higher lycopene content in field‐grown (mean = 91.9 mg kg?1) than in greenhouse‐grown (mean = 56.1 mg kg?1) fruits. HPLC analysis of lycopene isomeric forms revealed a higher content of all‐trans isomers in all tomato genotypes examined. However, the cis isomeric form was exceptionally higher in the field‐ and greenhouse‐grown cherry tomato L esculentum var cerasiforme cv Gardener's Delight, which contained ~9.3 and 9.9 mg kg?1 cis isomers respectively. Grape juices made using small‐scale production techniques are widely consumed. The extraction procedures employed to produce them, however, can affect bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in the final product. In this study, juices prepared using four extraction methods (steam, extractor, juicer and blender) were evaluated for soluble and hydrolysable polyphenol content, total anthocyanin content, antioxidant capacity, physicochemical characteristics and colour. Acceptance of steam‐extracted juices and their stability during storage were also evaluated. Steam extraction resulted in a higher soluble phenolic (1073 ± 58 mg gallic acid L?1) and anthocyanin content (138 ± 22 mg cyanidin L?1), as well as a higher antioxidant capacity when compared to juices prepared using other methods. Although steam‐extracted juice remained microbiologically stable during 24 months of storage, changes in phytochemical compounds and antioxidant capacity did occur. Our results indicate that steam‐extracted grape juices have high commercial potential.  相似文献

This work is aimed at: (i) analysing the extracts obtained from canning by‐products of three artichoke cultivars (Opal, Capriccio and Catanese) for antioxidant parameters; (ii) comparing UHPLC‐ESI‐MS/MS profile, colour, textural properties and cooking performance of fresh pasta enriched of the most antioxidant extract, with control pasta. The concentrated Catanese cv. extracts showed the highest antioxidant activity (1662 μmol Trolox equivalents L?1) and the highest levels of luteolin‐7‐O‐rutinoside, luteolin‐7‐O‐glucoside and apigenin‐7‐O‐rutinoside compared to other cultivars. Fresh pasta enriched of Catanese extract showed higher (< 0.05) phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity (500 mg gallic acid kg?1 and 1324 μmol Trolox kg?1, respectively) than control pasta (306 mg gallic acid kg?1 and 886 μmol Trolox kg?1, respectively). The extract increased (< 0.05) pasta brownness (from 19.93 to 23.34), and decreased yellowness (from 27.11 to 23.09), but did not alter textural and cooking parameters. So, pasta was a good vehicle to increase the antioxidant dietary intake.  相似文献

The nitrate and nitrite content of leaf vegetables (Swiss chard, sea beet, spinach and cabbage), “inflorescence” vegetables (cauliflower) and fruit vegetables (eggplant and vegetable marrow) grown with organic fertilizers have been determined by a modified cadmium–Griess method. Samples were purchased from organic food stores as well as collected directly from an organic farm in Madrid (Spain). Nitrate levels were much higher in the leaf vegetables (especially Swiss chard species; average over the different samples and species of 2778.6 ± 1474.7 mg kg? 1) than in inflorescence or fruit products (mean values between 50.2 ± 52.6 and 183.9 ± 233.6 mg kg? 1). Following Swiss chard species, spinach (1349.8 ± 1045.5 mg kg? 1) showed the highest nitrate content, and nitrite was found above the limit of detection in some samples only (spinach, 4.6 ± 1.0 mg kg? 1; sea beet, 4.2 ± 0.7 mg kg? 1 and Swiss chard, 1.2 ± 0.4 mg kg? 1). Some vegetables (spinach, cabbage and eggplant) had lower nitrate content in the samples harvested in summer, showing the influence of climatic conditions on the nitrate levels in a plant. The samples taken directly from the organic farm, with the exception of eggplant, had higher or slightly higher average nitrate values than samples purchased in the organic food stores, ranging from 117 to 1077%.  相似文献

Research reports on the ethnomedical and pharmacological potential of Kigelia africana extracts. In this study, the nutritional potential of K. africana seed and seed oil was evaluated by chemical analyses. Organic matter and ash constituted 915.23 ± 7.98 g kg?1 DM and 49.05 ± 4.55 g kg?1 DM of the seed mass, respectively. Oil constituted 492.2 g kg?1 DM of the seed mass with oleic acid, linoleic acid and α‐linolenic acid constituting 17.6%, 12.9% and 54.3%, respectively, of the seed oil. Vitamin E concentration was 0.94 ± 0.25 μg g?1. Crude protein was 357.35 ± 3.39 g kg?1 DM. Arginine (6.14 ± 0.31 g per 100 g) as the most abundant amino acid and hydroxyproline (0.11 ± 0.06 g per 100 g) the least. Phosphorus (1123.2 mg per 100 g) and calcium (56.1 mg per 100 g) were, respectively, the most and least abundant minerals. Gross energy was 29.6 ± 0.06 MJ kg?1. Kigelia africana seeds could be exploited as nutrient‐dense dietary supplement rich in protein, oleic acid and essential fatty acids.  相似文献

Fruits have been the focus of several studies aimed at finding new antioxidant sources for protection against the damage caused by reactive species. In this study, the antioxidant activity and the presence of phenolic compounds in all parts (peel, pulp, and seeds) of Eugenia involucrata DC. fruits were evaluated. DPPH·, ABTS·+, and ORAC methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity, and an UHPLC-MS/MS method was developed for determining the phenolic compounds (gallic, chlorogenic, ferulic, p-coumaric and ellagic acids, quercetin, and myricetin). In the determination of both antioxidant activity and phenolic composition, the efficiency of solvents with different polarities—methanol/H2O (80:20, v/v), ethanol/H2O (80:20, v/v), methanol/acidified water with phosphoric acid pH 3.00 (80:20, v/v), and ethyl acetate—for the extraction of the phenolic compounds, was also evaluated. All parts of E. involucrata fruits showed antioxidant activity, in the range of 36.68 ± 1.44 to 873.87 ± 18.24 μmol TE g?1, being the highest values found in the seeds and peel when more polar extraction solvents were used. Six, five, and three phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the pulp, peel, and seeds, respectively, with the highest abundance as p-coumaric acid (14 ± 2 mg kg?1) in the pulp, quercetin (47 ± 5 mg kg?1) in the peel, and gallic acid (74 ± 4 mg kg?1) in the seeds, also when more polar solvents were used. Although antioxidant activity methods suggested that the peel and seeds have more antioxidant potential, a wider variety of compounds were determined in the pulp.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of phenolic extracts from olives and olive oil has been assessed by scavenging of 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and by studying the effects on the stability of stripped olive oil in the absence and presence of ferric chloride. The olive extracts contained a much higher concentration (1940–5800 mg kg?1) of phenolic components than the olive oil extract (180 mg kg?1). Some olive extracts were more effective than the olive oil extract in scavenging DPPH radicals, but the three varieties of olives examined showed relatively large differences in both polyphenol concentration and antioxidant activity of extracts. α‐Tocopherol and extracts from both olives and olive oil were effective antioxidants in stripped olive oil at 60 °C. Ferric chloride reduced the stability of stripped olive oil, but the olive extract studied was significantly more effective as an antioxidant in the presence of the metal salt than the olive oil extract or α‐tocopherol. Ferric ions catalysed the oxidation of caffeic acid, oleuropein and phenolic components of the olive and olive oil extracts in aqueous solution (pH 5.4). BACKGROUND By‐products generated during the processing of plant food can be considered a promising source of dietary fibre as a functional compound. The dietary fibre composition, soluble sugars and antioxidant activity of the extractable polyphenols of pea and broad bean by‐products have been analysed in this study. RESULTS: Total dietary fibre using AOAC methods plus hydrolysis (broad bean pod: 337.3 g kg?1; pea pod: 472.6 g kg?1) is higher (P < 0.05) in both by‐products than with the Englyst method (broad bean pod: 309.7 g kg?1; pea pod: 434.6 g kg?1). The main monomers are uronic acids, glucose, arabinose and galactose in broad bean pods. However, pea pods are very rich in glucose and xylose. The soluble sugars analysed by high‐performance liquid chromatography in both by‐products have glucose as the most important component, followed by sucrose and fructose. The ferric reducing antioxidant power (broad bean pod: 406.4 µmol Trolox equivalents g?1; pea pod: 25.9 µmol Trolox equivalents g?1) and scavenging effect on 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl radical (EC50 of broad bean pod: 0.4 mg mL?1; EC50 of pea pod: 16.0 mg mL?1) were also measured. CONCLUSIONS: Broad bean and pea by‐products are very rich in dietary fibre, particularly insoluble dietary fibre and their extractable polyphenols demonstrate antioxidant activity. Syzygium cumini, widely known as Jamun, is a tropical tree that yields purple ovoid fleshy fruit. Its seed has traditionally been used in India for the treatment of diabetes. Based on the available ethno‐pharmacological knowledge, further studies were extended to understand the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of three anatomically distinct parts of fruit: the pulp, kernel and seed coat. Fruit parts, their corresponding ethanol extracts and residues were evaluated for chemical composition. The alcoholic extract was evaluated for its antioxidant potential against DPPH?, OH?, O2?? and lipid peroxidation. The whole fruit consisted of 666.0 ± 111.0 g kg?1 pulp, 290.0 ± 40.0 g kg?1 kernel and 50.0 ± 15.0 g kg?1 seed coat. Fresh pulp was rich in carbohydrates, protein and minerals. Total fatty matter was not significant in all three parts of fruit. Detailed mineral analysis showed calcium was abundant in all fruit parts and extracts. Total phenolics, anthocyanins and flavonoid contents of pulp were 3.9 ± 0.5, 1.34 ± 0.2 and 0.07 ± 0.04 g kg?1, respectively. Kernel and seed coat contained 9.0 ± 0.7 and 8.1 ± 0.8 g kg?1 total phenolics respectively. Jamun pulp ethanol extract (PEE), kernel ethanol extract (KEE) and seed coat ethanol extract (SCEE) showed a high degree of phenolic enrichment. DPPH radical scavenging activity of the samples and standards in descending order was: gallic acid > quercetin > Trolox > KEE > BHT > SCEE > PEE. Superoxide radical scavenging activity (IC50) of KEE was six times higher (85.0 ± 5.0 µg mL?1) compared to Trolox (540.0 ± 5.0 µg mL?1) and three times compared to catechin (296.0 ± 11.0 µg mL?1). Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (IC50) of KEE was 151.0 ± 5.0 µg mL?1 which was comparable with catechin (188.0 ± 6.0 µg mL?1). Inhibition of lipid peroxidation of the extracts was also studied and their activity against peroxide radicals were lower than that of standard compounds (BHT, 79.0 ± 4.0 µg mL?1; quercetin, 166.0 ± 13.0 µg mL?1; Trolox, 175.0 ± 4.0 µg mL?1; PEE, 342.0 ± 17.0 µg mL?1; KEE, 202.0 ± 13.0 µg mL?1 and SCEE, 268.0 ± 13.0 µg mL?1.
