Consciousness, privacy, and information

The challenges for a scientific study of conscious experience are discussed, as well as the importance of such research for the foundations of information science. A three pronged approach to the investigation of consciousness and its functions is suggested.     

Consciousness and complexity

Conventional approaches to understanding consciousness are generally concerned with the contribution of specific brain areas or groups of neurons. By contrast, it is considered here what kinds of neural processes can account for key properties of conscious experience. Applying measures of neural integration and complexity, together with an analysis of extensive neurological data, leads to a testable proposal-the dynamic core hypothesis-about the properties of the neural substrate of consciousness.

The influence of increased pulverized-coal consumption on lining failure and the associated heat losses in the cooling system (as well as the increase in the coke consumption required to cover those losses) is assessed on the basis of data from automated lining monitoring in the blast-furnace shop at PJSC Zaporizhstal.     

Consciousness and biological evolution

It has been suggested that if the preservation and development of consciousness in the biological evolution is a result of natural selection, it is plausible that consciousness not only has been influenced by neural processes, but has had a survival value itself; and it could only have had this, if it had also been efficacious. This argument for mind-brain interaction is examined, both as the argument has been developed by William James and Karl Popper and as it has been discussed by C.D. Broad. The problem of identifying mental phenomena with certain neural phenomena is also addressed. The main conclusion of the analysis is that an explanation of the evolution of consciousness in Darwinian terms of natural selection does not rule out that consciousness may have evolved as a mere causally inert effect of the evolution of the nervous system, or that mental phenomena are identical with certain neural phenomena. However, the interactionistic theory still seems, more plausible and more fruitful for other reasons brought up in the discussion.     

Consciousness and metacognition.

This article describes the interplay between psychological and philosophical approaches to consciousness. The role of empirical evidence from psychological research on metacognition is emphasized. The metacognitive approach to subjective reports is helpful for circumventing some fundamental shortcomings in early introspectionist approaches. A central claim of the article is that subjective reports can be useful for testing hypotheses if the way in which they are used is reformulated, and specific reformulations are offered. Illustrative findings about metacognitive monitoring and metacognitive control demonstrate how research on metacognition can produce synergy between the psychological and philosophical approaches to consciousness, by furnishing constraints on the range of acceptable theories and by producing clues to inspire new theories. Reviews attempts to define consciousness and suggests that scientific theory is the best method to explore this concept. The following 7 definitions of consciousness from the Oxford English Dictionary are discussed: joint or mutual knowledge, internal knowledge or conviction, awareness, direct awareness, personal unity, normal waking state, and double consciousness. It is concluded that the last definition may be the most valuable since it requires that consciousness be defined according to situations. This is considered to lead to the integration of 2 or more basic senses and to scientific concept formation at a new level of sophistication.
