Nuclear safety analysis remains of crucial importance for both the design and the operation of nuclear reactors. Safety analysis usually entails the simulation of several selected postulated accidents, which can be divided into two main categories, namely reactivity insertion accident (RIA) and loss of flow accident (LOFA). In this paper, thermal-hydraulic simulations of fast LOFA accident were carried out on the new core configuration of the material test research reactor NUR. For this purpose, the nuclear reactor analysis PARET code was used to determine the reactor performance by calculating the reactor power, the reactivity and the temperatures of different components (fuel, clad and coolant) as a function of time. It was observed that during the transient the maximum clad temperature remained well below the critical temperature limit of 110 °C, and the maximum coolant temperature did not exceed the onset of nucleate boiling point of 120 °C. It is concluded that the reactor can be operated at full power level with sufficient safety margins with regard to such kind of transients.  相似文献

The main objective of the reactor safety is to keep the reactor core in a condition, which does not permit any release of radioactivity into the environment. In order to ensure this, the reactor must have sufficient safety margins during all possible operational conditions (normal as well as accidental). To accomplish this, a study has been carried out, for the analysis of loss of flow accident (LOFA), which is one of the probable scenarios among other possible events such as reactivity-induced-accidents, loss of coolant accident, etc. The study has been carried out for Pakistan research reactor, PARR-1, which was initially converted from HEU to LEU fuel. It is a swimming pool type reactor using MTR type fuel. Presently, a new core is proposed to be assembled containing LEU and some of the used (less burnt) HEU fuel elements. The accident is assumed when the reactor is running at a steady-state power level of 9.8 MW. Computer code PARET and standard correlations were employed to compute various parameters. Results predict nucleate boiling in the core but the temperatures would remain far below the fuel clad melting point.  相似文献

Burn-up dependent feedback coefficients of reactivity for the reference operating core of Pakistan Research Reactor-1 (PARR-1), have been calculated employing standard computers codes WIMSD/4 and CITATION. Fast reactivity insertion transient (1.5 $/0.5 s) is simulated at each burn step using computer code RELAP5/MOD3.4 and PARET. Calculation reveals that fuel temperature coefficient of reactivity is 1.77 %Δk/kT less negative while moderator temperature and void coefficients of reactivity are 7.74 %Δk/kT and 2.04 %Δk/kT more negative at end of cycle (EOC), respectively. Fast reactivity insertion transient analysis shows that due to larger value of prompt generation time (Λ), reactor response to transient is slow at EOC. Therefore peak power, maximum fuel centreline and clad temperature decrease as the fuel is burned. This is the sign of enhanced inherent safety with the burn-up of reference operating core of PARR-1. Removal of in-pile experiment accident has also been modelled in RELAP5/MOD3.4 and results in this study are compared with PARET.  相似文献

The course of reactivity insertion in a pool type research reactor, with scram disabled under natural circulation condition is numerically investigated. The analyses were performed by a coupled kinetic–thermal–hydraulic computer code developed specifically for this task. The 10-MW IAEA MTR research reactor was subjected to unprotected reactivity insertion (step and ramp) for both low and high-enriched fuel with continuous reactivity feedback due to coolant and fuel temperature effects. In general, it was found that the power, core mass flow rate and clad temperature under fully established natural circulation are higher for high-enriched fuel than for low enriched fuel. This is unlike the case of decay heat removal, where equal clad temperatures are reported for both fuels. The analysis of reactivity represented by the maximum insertion of positive reactivity ($0.73) demonstrated the high inherent safety features of MTR-type research reactor. Even in the case of total excess reactivity without scram, the high reactivity feedbacks of fuel and moderator temperatures limit the power excursion and avoid consequently escalation of clad temperature to the level of onset of nucleate boiling and sub-cooled void formation. The code can also be modified to provide an accurate capability for the analyses of research reactor transients under forced convection.  相似文献

The paper presents the behavior and properties analysis of the low enriched uranium fuel compared with the original high enriched uranium fuel. The MNSR reactor core was modeled with both fuel materials and the reactor behavior was studied during the steady state and abnormal conditions. The MERSAT code was used in the analysis. The steady state thermal hydraulic analysis results were compared with that obtained from the experimental results hold during commissioning the Syrian MNSR. Comparison with experimental data shows that the steady-state behavior of the HEU core was accurately predicted by the MERSAT code calculations. The validated model was then used to analyze LEU cores with two proposed UO2 fuel pin designs. With each LEU core, the steady state and 3.77 mk rod withdrawal transient were run and the results were compared with the available published data in the literatures for the low enriched uranium fuel core. The results reveal that the low enriched uranium fuel showed a good behavior and the peak clad temperatures remain well below the clad melting temperature during reactivity insertion accident.  相似文献

The IAEA’s reference research reactor MTR-10 MW has been modeled using the code MERSAT. The developed MERSAT model consists of detailed representation of primary and secondary loops including reactor pool, bypass, main pump, heat exchanger and reactor core with the corresponding neutronics and thermalhydraulic characteristics. Following the successful accomplishment of the steady state operation at nominal power of 10 MW, reactivity insertion accident (RIA) for three different initial reactivity values of $1.5/0.5 s, $1.35/0.5 s and $0.1/1.0 s have been simulated. The predicted peaks of reactor power, hot channel fuel, clad and coolant temperatures demonstrate inherent safety features of the reference MTR reactor. Only in case of the fast RIA of $1.5/0.5 s, where the peak power of 133.66 MW arrived 0.625 s after the start of the transient, the maximum hot channel clad temperature arrives at the condition of subcooled boiling with the subsequent void formation. However, due to the strong negative reactivity feedback effects of coolant and fuel temperatures the void formation persists for a very short time so that thermalhydraulic conditions remained far from exceeding the safety design limits of thermalhydraulic instability and DNB. Finally, the simulation results show good agreement with previous international benchmark analyses accomplished with other qualified channel and thermalhydraulic system codes.  相似文献

The sensitivity of various safety parameters, affecting the reactivity insertion limits imposed by clad melting temperature for a typical pool type research reactor, have been investigated in this work. The analysis was done for low enriched uranium (LEU) core with scram disabled conditions. The temperature coefficients of fuel and coolant, void/density coefficient and βeff were individually varied and the reactor behavior for different ramp reactivity transients was studied. In this work ramp reactivity insertions from 1.6 to 2 $/0.5 s were selected and peak power, maximum fuel, clad and coolant temperatures were determined. Results show that peak power decreases with an increase in the Doppler coefficient of reactivity. However, it rises with an increase in the reactivity insertion. Core remains insensitive to the coolant temperature coefficient of reactivity for ramps in the range of 1.6–1.9/0.5 s. Peak power decreases with an increase in the void coefficient of reactivity (0.1 $/%void to 0.8 $/%void). With a decrease in the void coefficient of reactivity, the maximum fuel and clad temperatures show a non-linear rise. Power and temperature peaks in the transient are sensitive to the values of βeff. Finally, it can be concluded that LEU is a safe core due to its smaller βeff, larger Doppler coefficient and void coefficient of reactivity. It is inferred through this work that reactivity insertion limits of LEU core are quite insensitive to βeff, the Doppler coefficient and the coolant temperature coefficient of reactivity. They are highly sensitive to the change of the void coefficient of reactivity in the core.  相似文献

During reactor operation, many complex changes occur in fuel rod which affects its thermal, mechanical and material properties. These changes also affect the reactor response to the transient and accident situations. Realistic simulation of fuel rod behavior under transients such as reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) is of great significance. In this study, thermal hydraulic analysis code THEATRe (Thermal Hydraulic Engineering Analysis Tool in Real-time) has been modified by addition of fuel rod behavior models for dynamic simulation of nuclear reactor. Transient changes in gas-gap parameters were taken into account by modeling the gas-gap behavior. Thermo-mechanical behavior of fuel rod is modeled to take into account the thermal, elastic and plastic deformation. To simulate RIA, point reactor kinetics model is also incorporated in the THEATRe code. To demonstrate the transient fuel rod behavior, AP1000 reactor is modeled and three hypothetical RIA cases are simulated. The RIA is considered at three different reactor power levels, i.e. 100, 50 and 1% of nominal power. The investigated parameters are fuel temperature, cladding stress and strain, fuel and cladding thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient in gas-gap. Modified code calculates the fuel rod temperatures according to updated fuel, clad and gas-gap parameters at the onset of steady-state operation and during the transient. The modified code provides lower steady-state fuel temperature as compared to the original code. Stress and strain analyses indicate that the hoop and radial strain is higher at high power locations of the fuel rod; therefore, gap closure process will initially occur in the central portion of the fuel rod and it should be given more emphasis in the safety analysis of the fuel rod and nuclear reactor during accidents and transients.  相似文献

An analysis of the April 26, 1986 accident at the Chernobyl-4 nuclear power plant in the Soviet Union is presented. The peak calculated core power during the accident was 550 000 MWt. The analysis provides insights that further understanding of the plant behavior during the accident. The plant was modeled with the RELAP5/MOD2 computer code using information available in the open literature. RELAP5/MOD2 is an advanced computer code designed for best-estimate thermal-hydraulic analysis of transients in light water reactors. The Chernobyl-4 model included the reactor kinetics effects of fuel temperature, graphite temperature, core average void fraction, and automatic regulator control rod position. Preliminary calculations indicated the effects of recirculation pump coast down during performance of a test at the plant were not sufficient to initiate a reactor kinetics-driven power excursion. Another mechanism, or “trigger” is required. The accident simulation assumed the trigger was recirculation pump performance degradation caused by the onset of pump cavitation. Fuel disintegration caused by the power excursion probably led to rupture of pressure tubes. To further characterize the response of the Chernobyl-4 plant during severe accidents, simulations of an extended station blackout sequence with failure of all feedwater are also presented. For those simulations, RELAP5/MOD2 and SCDAP/MOD1 (an advanced best-estimate computer code for the prediction of reactor core behavior during a severe accident) were used. The simulations indicated that fuel rod melting was delayed significantly because the graphite acted as a heat sink.  相似文献

This paper discusses the role of the core disruptive accident (CDA) in the safety evaluations and licensing of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors (LMFBR). Parametric studies of transient overpower (TOP) accidents based on calculations for SNR-300 using the HOPE computer code are presented. Major uncertainties in TOP analysis are identified and discussed with emphasis on the need for reliable fuel failure criteria. A series of calculations illustrating the possible behavior of the U.S. LMFBR demonstration plant following a loss-of-flow (LOF) accident without scram using the SAS-IIIA computer code are described. It is shown that for a beginning of life (BOL) core and end of equilibrium cycle (EOEC) core, the reactivity effects from sodium voiding and clad motion can lead to further sustained reactivity additions from subsequent fuel motion and FCI driven sodium voiding. In these calculations we have used the fuel enthalpy criterion which predicts clad failure around the core midplane. For the EOEC case these effects can add sufficient reactivity to take the system above prompt-critical (LOF driven TOP) and into hydrodynamic disassembly. For the BOL case the sodium void may not be sufficient to bring the system near sustained prompt-critical. However, clad motion appears to be effective in raising the reactivity to prompt-criticality. These results are based on clad failure dynamics modeling in SAS-IIIA. Further work is needed in the area of fuel-clad behavior under severe transients before definitive conclusions can be drawn regarding the applicability of current clad failure models at high clad temperatures (>1000°C). The potential significance of a new concept in CDA analysis called the “transition phase” is briefly mentioned.  相似文献

Computer simulation was carried out for reactivity induced transients in a HEU core of a tank-in-pool reactor, a miniature neutron source reactor (MNSR). The reactivity transients without scram at initial power of 3 W were studied. From the low power level, the power steadily increased with time and then rose sharply to higher peak values followed by a gradual decrease in value due to temperature feedback effects. The trends of theoretical results were found to be similar to measured values and the peak powers agreed well with experimental results. For ramp reactivity equivalent of clean core cold excess reactivity of 4 mk (4×10−3 Δk/k), the predicted peak power of 100.8 kW agrees favourably with the experimental value of 100.2 kW. The measured outlet temperature of 72.6 °C is also in agreement with the calculated value of 72.9 °C for the release of the core excess reactivity. Theoretical results for the postulated accidents due to fresh fuel replacement of reactivity worth 6.71 mk and addition of incorrect thickness of Be plates resulting in 9 mk reactivity insertion were 187.23 and 254.3 kW, respectively. For these high peak powers associated with these reactivity insertions, it is expected that nucleate boiling will occur within the flow channels of the reactor core.

A full-scale ATHLET system model for the Syrian miniature neutron source reactor (MNSR) has been developed. The model represents all reactor components of primary and secondary loops with the corresponding neutronics and thermal hydraulic characteristics. Under the MNSR operation conditions of natural circulation, normal operation, step reactivity transients and reactivity insertion accidents have been simulated. The analyses indicate the capability of ATHLET to simulate MNSR dynamic and thermal hydraulic behaviour and particularly to calculate the core coolant velocity of prevailing natural circulation in presence of the strong negative reactivity feed back of coolant temperature. The predicted time distribution of reactor power, core inlet and outlet coolant temperature follow closely the measured data for the quasi steady and transient states. However, sensitivity analyses indicate the influence of pressure form loss coefficients at core inlet and outlet on the results. The analysis of reactivity accidents represented by the insertion of large reactivity, demonstrates the high inherent safety features of MNSR. Even in case of insertion of total available cold excess reactivity without scram, the high negative reactivity feedback of moderator temperature limits power excursion and avoids consequently the escalation of clad temperature to the level of onset of sub-cooled void formation. The calculated peak power in this case agrees well with the data reported in the safety analysis report. The ATHLET code had not previously been assessed under these conditions. The results of this comprehensive analysis ensure the ability of the code to test some conceptual design modifications of MNSR's cooling system aiming the improvement of core cooling conditions to increase the maximum continuous reactor operation time allowing more effective use of MNSR for irradiation purposes.  相似文献

The effects of using different clad materials on the dynamics of a material test research reactor were studied. For this purpose, the aluminum clad of an MTR was replaced separately with stainless steel-316 and zircaloy-4. Simulations were carried out to determine the reactor performance under reactivity insertion and loss-of-flow transients. Nuclear reactor analysis code PARET was employed to carry out these calculations. It was observed that during the fast reactivity insertion transient, Al cladded fuel attained the maximum reactor power of 59.34 MW, while stainless steel-316 cladded attained 48.74 MW and zircaloy-4 cladded attained maximum power of 55.87 MW. During the slow reactivity insertion transient, Al cladded fuel attained the maximum reactor power of 12.38 MW, while stainless steel-316 cladded attained 12.23 MW and zircaloy-4 cladded attained maximum power of 12.34 MW. During the loss-of-flow transients, the reactor power of the stainless steel-316 cladded fuel remained slightly lower than the other two. The fuel temperature of stainless steel-316 and zircaloy-4 cladded fuels remained higher due to poor fuel–clad gap conductance.  相似文献

An accurate prediction of reactor core behavior in transients depends on how much it could be possible to exactly determine the thermal feedbacks of the core elements such as fuel, clad and coolant. In short time transients, results of these feedbacks directly affect the reactor power and determine the reactor response. Such transients are commonly happened during the start-up process which makes it necessary to carefully evaluate the detail of process. Hence this research evaluates a short time transient occurring during the start up of VVER-1000 reactor. The reactor power was tracked using the point kinetic equations from HZP state (100 W) to 612 kW. Final power (612 kW) was achieved by withdrawing control rods and resultant excess reactivity was set into dynamic equations to calculate the reactor power. Since reactivity is the most important part in the point kinetic equations, using a Lumped Parameter (LP) approximation, energy balance equations were solved in different zones of the core. After determining temperature and total reactivity related to feedbacks in each time step, the exact value of reactivity is obtained and is inserted into point kinetic equations. In reactor core each zone has a specific temperature and its corresponding thermal feedback. To decrease the effects of point kinetic approximations, these partial feedbacks in different zones are superposed to show an accurate model of reactor core dynamics. In this manner the reactor point kinetic can be extended to the whole reactor core which means “Reactor spatial kinetic”. All required group constants in calculations are prepared using the WIMS code. In addition CITATION code was used to calculate the flux, power distribution and core reactivity inside the core. To update the last change in group constants and resultant reactivity in point kinetic equations, these neutronic codes were coupled with a developed dynamic program. This study is applied on a typical VVER-1000 reactor core to show the reactor response in short time transients caused during start-up procedure.  相似文献

An analysis is made of locked rotor accidents in a molten salt breeder reactor (MSBR). The evaluation is performed using a point reactor model for the reactor power and a spatially lumped parameter model of primary system for fuel temperature.

In a reactor with circulating fuel such as an MSBR, the reduction or the stoppage of fuel flow caused by locked rotor of fuel pumps will result not only in adding positive reactivity due to the decrease of the loss of delayed neutron precursors out of the core, but also in loosing heat sink. In this report, locked rotor accidents of one, two, three and four pumps out of four fuel salt pumps are evaluated. It is shown that the transients of the reactor system will be within the safety range in virtue of the excellent nuclear and thermal characteristics of the MSBR.  相似文献
