Mumford and Shah functional: VLSI analysis and implementation

This paper describes the analysis of the Mumford and Shah functional from the implementation point of view. Our goal is to show results in terms of complexity for real-time applications, such as motion estimation based on segmentation techniques, of the Mumford and Shah functional. Moreover, the sensitivity to finite precision representation is addressed, a fast VLSI architecture is described, and results obtained for its complete implementation on a 0.13 /spl mu/m standard cells technology are presented.     

Mumford–Shah based registration: a comparison of a level set and a phase field approach

Traditionally, different image processing tasks are mainly considered on their own. The main aim of this paper is a combination of registration, i.e., the spatial alignment of images and egmentation, i.e., the recognition of edges and object contours in images. A proper registration depends on a good initial segmentation and vice versa. In this paper, it is proposed to link these problems together by formulating a coupled variational problem. We will focus on an edge-based approach instead of considering image intensities and propose a variational formulation based on the Mumford–Shah free discontinuity problem. This paper is particularly devoted to a comparison of a sharp interface approach with the phase field analogue.     

Convergent dynamics, a tribute to Boris Pavlovich Demidovich

We review and pay tribute to a result on convergent systems by the Russian mathematician Boris Pavlovich Demidovich. In a sense, Demidovich's approach forms a prelude to a field which is now called incremental stability of dynamical systems. Developments on incremental stability are reviewed from a historical perspective.     

Numerical minimization¶of the Mumford–Shah functional

We consider a discrete approximation of the Mumford–Shah functional defined on finite element spaces. For a relevant model case we study global and local minima; from their behavior, we are led to propose two minimization methods, based on the quasi-Newton algorithm, which can find the absolute minimum of the functional. A Multiphase Level Set Framework for Image Segmentation Using the Mumford and Shah Model

We propose a new multiphase level set framework for image segmentation using the Mumford and Shah model, for piecewise constant and piecewise smooth optimal approximations. The proposed method is also a generalization of an active contour model without edges based 2-phase segmentation, developed by the authors earlier in T. Chan and L. Vese (1999. In Scale-Space'99, M. Nilsen et al. (Eds.), LNCS, vol. 1682, pp. 141–151) and T. Chan and L. Vese (2001. IEEE-IP, 10(2):266–277). The multiphase level set formulation is new and of interest on its own: by construction, it automatically avoids the problems of vacuum and overlap; it needs only log n level set functions for n phases in the piecewise constant case; it can represent boundaries with complex topologies, including triple junctions; in the piecewise smooth case, only two level set functions formally suffice to represent any partition, based on The Four-Color Theorem. Finally, we validate the proposed models by numerical results for signal and image denoising and segmentation, implemented using the Osher and Sethian level set method.
