A depth-averaged two-dimensional (2D) numerical model for unsteady flow and nonuniform sediment transport in open channels is established using the finite volume method on a nonstaggered, curvilinear grid. The 2D shallow water equations are solved by the SIMPLE(C) algorithms with the Rhie and Chow’s momentum interpolation technique. The proposed sediment transport model adopts a nonequilibrium approach for nonuniform total-load sediment transport. The bed load and suspended load are calculated separately or jointly according to sediment transport mode. The sediment transport capacity is determined by four formulas which are capable of accounting for the hiding and exposure effects among different size classes. An empirical formula is proposed to consider the effects of the gravity on the sediment transport capacity and the bed-load movement direction in channels with steep slopes. Flow and sediment transport are simulated in a decoupled manner, but the sediment module adopts a coupling procedure for the computations of sediment transport, bed change, and bed material sorting. The model has been tested against several experimental and field cases, showing good agreement between the simulated results and measured data.  相似文献

A proprietary one-dimensional numerical model was developed for predicting the amounts of sediment flushed and deposited in the reservoirs in series, the bed evolutions, and variations of the suspended solids concentrations along a river during the concerted sediment flushing events. The model consists of a flow movement module and sediment transport module in which the bed material load is taken as sediment mixture. The nonuniform property of the bed material load is modeled by the introduction of a mixing layer, transition layer, and deposition strata. The model was calibrated on the basis of the field data at Dashidaira and Unazuki reservoirs on the Kurobe River in Japan. The calculated results are in good agreement with the measurements. For the reservoirs out of Japan, the Ashida and Michiue bed load formula used in the model should be verified or replaced by other formulas.  相似文献

Numerical Modeling of Bed Deformation in Laboratory Channels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A depth-average model using a finite-volume method with boundary-fitted grids has been developed to calculate bed deformation in alluvial channels. The model system consists of an unsteady hydrodynamic module, a sediment transport module and a bed-deformation module. The hydrodynamic module is based on the two-dimensional shallow water equations. The sediment transport module is comprised of semiempirical models of suspended load and nonequilibrium bedload. The bed-deformation module is based on the mass balance for sediment. The secondary flow transport effects are taken into account by adjusting the dimensionless diffusivity coefficient in the depth-average version of the k–ε turbulence model. A quasi-three-dimensional flow approach is used to simulate the effect of secondary flows due to channel curvature on bed-load transport. The effects of bed slope on the rate and direction of bed-load transport are also taken into account. The developed model has been validated by computing the scour hole and the deposition dune produced by a jet discharged into a shallow pool with movable bed. Two further applications of the model are presented in which the bed deformation is calculated in curved alluvial channels under steady- and unsteady-flow conditions. The predictions are compared with data from laboratory measurements. Generally good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

Based on a method of combining stochastic processes with mechanics, a new bedload formula for the arbitrary kth size fraction of nonuniform sediment is theoretically developed by using a stochastic model of sediment exchange and the probabilistic distribution of fractional bedload transport rates. The relations, proposed recently by Sun, for the probability of fractional incipient motion and for the average velocity of particle motion are introduced to bedload formula. Plenty of experimental data for the bedload transport rate of uniform sediment are used to determine two constants. The theoretical bedload formula for any fraction of nonuniform sediment possesses several advantages, including a clear physical concept, a strict mathematical derivation, and a self-adaptability to uniform sediment. The formula is verified with natural data expressing the transport of nonuniform sediment under full motion in laboratory flume. The result shows that the experimental observations agree well with the predicted fractional bedload transport rates. Comparison of the theory with field data finds that the proposed formula still applies to partial transport of bedload in gravel-bed streams as long as the immobile percentage of bed material is taken into account.  相似文献

Problems and difficulties in modeling sediment transport in alluvial rivers arise when one uses the theory of equilibrium transport of uniform sediment to simulate riverbed variation. A two-dimensional mathematical model for nonuniform suspended sediment transport is presented to simulate riverbed deformation. Through dividing sediment mixture into several size groups in which the sediment particles are thought to be uniform, the nonuniformity and the exchange between suspended sediment and bed material are considered. The change of concentration along the flow direction, size redistribution, and cross-sectional bed variation can then be described reasonably well by the model. In simulating the flow field with big dry-wet flats, moving boundary problems are solved very well by introducing a so-called finite-slot technique. Verification with laboratory data shows that the model has a good ability to simulate channel bed variations. Last, the model was applied to a real alluvial river system. Variables such as water level, sediment concentration, suspended sediment size distribution, and riverbed variation were obtained with encouraging results.  相似文献

In bed-load sediment transport, the lifting force plays an important role in reducing the friction between sediment particles and the bed surface, and it makes particle transportation by the shear force easier. Because the lifting force is related to vorticity, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model incorporating large eddy simulations was applied to simulate the vorticity field in a channel bend. The results show that the distribution of vorticity is highly nonuniform, and it can lead to significant variations in lifting force and bed-load sediment transport per unit width in a channel bend. Relevant theories are modified on the basis of physical reasoning and then incorporated into numerical models to investigate the lifting-force effects on the bed topography and bed-surface sediment size gradation in a channel bend. With the lifting-force effects considered, it is shown that the errors in simulated bed topography can be reduced by approximately 40% and in bed-surface sediment size by 50%.  相似文献

Stochastic Prediction of Sediment Transport in Sand-Gravel Bed Rivers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Classical deterministic bedload transport predictors are applied to sand-gravel bed rivers. The turbulent bed shear stress is modeled according to a probability distribution to obtain realistic bedload transport rates at incipient motion. In extending the predictors to stochastic predictors for nonuniform sediment, many parameters that represent near-bed turbulence and the particle size distribution must be chosen. The parameters that give realistic results are chosen by analyzing the results of a new experimental flume dataset with relatively large water depths. Choosing other combinations of parameters may give equal total bedload transport rates, but at the cost of large errors in fractional transport rates. Attention is given to the hiding-exposure phenomenon and a hindrance effect related to nonuniform sediment. Validation based on two independent field datasets shows that successful predictions of particle sizes near the threshold for motion are feasible using the stochastic approach, while the deterministic approach gives successful predictions well above incipient motion.  相似文献

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) mathematical model for suspended load transport in turbulent flows. Based on the stochastic theory of turbulent flow proposed by Dou, numerical schemes of Reynolds stresses for anisotropic turbulent flows are obtained. Instead of a logarithmic law, a specific wall function is used to describe the velocity profile close to wall boundaries. The equations for two-dimensional suspended load motion and sorting of bed material have been improved for a 3D case. Numerical results are in good agreement with the measured data of the Gezhouba Project. The present method has been employed to simulate sediment erosion and deposition in the vicinity of the Three Gorges Dam. The size distribution of the deposits and bed material, and flow and sediment concentration at different times and elevations, are predicted. The results agree well with the observations in physical experiments. Thus, a new method is established for 3D simulation of sediment motion in the vicinity of dams.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model was applied to compute uniform and nonuniform sediment transport and bed deformation in an S-shaped laboratory channel located at the University of Innsbruck, where detailed measurements of the velocity field and bed elevation changes were made. The channel had two bends, a trapezoidal cross section, and a slope of S = 0.005. Gravel with a mean diameter of 4.2?mm was used as movable bed material and for sediment feeding. Wu’s formula for multiple grain sizes was compared with van Rijn’s formula using one grain size. Fairly good agreement was found between the computed and measured bed elevations for both approaches, whereas Wu’s formula could further improve the numerical results. Looking at the physics of the erosion pattern, the computed scour areas were located slightly more downstream than what was observed in the physical model. The current study also includes several parameter tests: grid distribution in vertical, lateral, and longitudinal direction; time step; number of inner iterations/time step; active sediment layer thickness; and the Shields coefficient. The variation of those parameters gave some differences in the results, but the overall pattern of bed elevation changes remained the same.  相似文献

The development of a fully three-dimensional finite volume morphodynamic model, for simulating fluid and sediment transport in curved open channels with rigid walls, is described. For flow field simulation, the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved numerically, without reliance on the assumption of hydrostatic pressure distribution, in a curvilinear nonorthogonal coordinate system. Turbulence closure is provided by either a low-Reynolds number k?ω turbulence model or the standard k?ε turbulence model, both of which apply a Boussinesq eddy viscosity. The sediment concentration distribution is obtained using the convection-diffusion equation and the sediment continuity equation is applied to calculate channel bed evolution, based on consideration of both bed load and suspended sediment load. The governing equations are solved in a collocated grid system. Experimental data obtained from a laboratory study of flow in an S-shaped channel are utilized to check the accuracy of the model’s hydrodynamic computations. Also, data from a different laboratory study, of equilibrium bed morphology associated with flow through 90° and 135° channel bends, are used to validate the model’s simulated bed evolution. The numerically-modeled fluid and sediment transportation show generally good agreement with the measured data. The calculated results with both turbulence models show that the low-Reynolds k?ω model better predicts flow and sediment transport through channel bends than the standard k?ε model.  相似文献

One-Dimensional Modeling of Dam-Break Flow over Movable Beds   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A one-dimensional model has been established to simulate the fluvial processes under dam-break flow over movable beds. The hydrodynamic model adopts the generalized shallow water equations, which consider the effects of sediment transport and bed change on the flow. The sediment model computes the nonequilibrium transport of bed load and suspended load. The effects of sediment concentration on sediment settling and entrainment are considered in determining the sediment settling velocity and transport capacity. In particular, a correction factor is proposed to modify the Van Rijn formulas of equilibrium bed-load transport rate and near-bed suspended-load concentration for the simulation of sediment transport under high-shear flow conditions. The governing equations are solved by an explicit finite-volume method with the first-order upwind scheme for intercell fluxes. The model has been tested in two experimental cases, with fairly good agreement between simulations and measurements. The sensitivities of the model results to parameters such as the sediment nonequilibrium adaptation length, Manning’s roughness coefficient and the proposed correction factor have been verified. The proposed model has also been compared to an existing model and the results indicate the new model is more reliable.  相似文献

In this study, the proposed one-dimensional model simulates the nonequilibrium transport of nonuniform total load under unsteady flow conditions in dendritic channel networks with hydraulic structures. The equations of sediment transport, bed changes, and bed-material sorting are solved in a coupling procedure with a direct solution technique, while still decoupled from the flow model. This coupled model for sediment calculation is more stable and less likely to produce negative values for bed-material gradation than the traditional fully decoupled model. The sediment transport capacity is calculated by one of four formulas, which have taken into consideration the hiding and exposure mechanism of nonuniform sediment transport. The fluvial erosion at bank toes and the mass failure of banks are simulated to complement the modeling of bed morphological changes in channels. The tests in several cases show that the present model is capable of predicting sediment transport, bed changes, and bed-material sorting in various situations, with reasonable accuracy and reliability.  相似文献

One-dimensional numerical sediment transport models (DREAM-1 and DREAM-2) are used to simulate seven experimental runs designed to examine sediment pulse dynamics in a physical model of forced pool-riffle morphology. Comparisons with measured data indicate that DREAM-1 and -2 closely reproduce the sediment transport flux and channel bed adjustments following the introduction of fine and coarse sediment pulses, respectively. The cumulative sediment transport at the flume exit in a DREAM-1 simulation is within 10% of the measured values, and cumulative sediment transport at flume exit in a DREAM-2 simulation is within a factor of 2 of the measured values. Comparison of simulated and measured reach-averaged aggradation and degradation indicates that 84% of DREAM-1 simulation results have errors less than 3.3?mm, which is approximately 77% of the bed material geometric mean grain size or 3.7% of the average water depth. A similar reach-averaged comparison indicates that 84% of DREAM-2 simulation results have errors less than 7.0?mm, which is approximately 1.7 times the bed material geometric mean grain size or 11% of the average water depth. Simulations using measured thalweg profiles as the input for the initial model profile produced results with larger errors and unrealistic aggradation and degradation patterns, demonstrating that one-dimensional numerical sediment transport models need to be applied on a reach-averaged basis.  相似文献

An existing two-dimensional mobile-bed hydrodynamic model has been modified to simulate bed-load transport in a complex gravel-bed river. We investigated the sensitivity of predicted bed load to control parameters, and compared model predictions of flow depth, shear stress, and gravel transport with field measurements made from the river. The predictions are based on concurrent field data of flow discharge, water level, and sediment for model input. The model takes into account multiple-fraction transport rates, and continuously updates the river bed and surface grain-size distribution. The model predictions are in reasonable agreement with field measurements.  相似文献

A model is presented to determine the threshold shear stress for noncohesive sediment (uniform and nonuniform) motion on horizontal and stream-wise sloping sedimentary beds, under a unidirectional steady-uniform streamflow. Hydrodynamic and particle-mechanic forces on a solitary sediment particle, resting over a sedimentary bed under the slip-spinning condition, are analyzed including the effect of turbulent fluctuations. Hydrodynamic forces such as drag, shear lift, and Magnus lift are taken into consideration. The drag coefficient is determined using an empirical formula. The inclusion of Magnus lift is significant because spherical particles spin just before dislodging downstream from their original position due to the differential hydrodynamic force along the vertical. The experimental data of sediment threshold are used to calibrate the model making the lift coefficient as a free parameter. The dependency of normalized threshold shear stress on particle parameter for various angles of repose and stream-wise bed slopes is presented graphically. The results obtained using the present model are compared with the curves proposed by different investigators and the experimental data of sediment (uniform and nonuniform) threshold for horizontal and stream-wise sloping beds.  相似文献

The paper presents a study on the influence of gravity on the incipient motion and the bed-load transport of sediment. The computation of critical bed-shear stress is revisited considering the balance of forces (hydrodynamic forces and submerged self-weight) acting on a solitary sediment particle lying on an arbitrary sloping bed. Modified effective bed-shear stress and the corresponding critical bed-shear stress, which are defined to assess the incipient motion of sediment in the direction of resultant force, are applied for the estimation of bed-load transport rate in the direction of resultant force. The sediment transport induced by the gravitational force, which is oblique to the direction of the drag force induced by flow, is incorporated into the bed-load transport equation. This modified model provides a reasonable prediction of the critical bed-shear stress and the bed-load transport rate. The model is validated by experimental data. It can be applied to steep slopes and can also avoid the problem of singularity that arises in numerically calculation of sediment transport rate. Additionally, the vectorial transport rate obtained in the model calculation can be implemented in a numerical simulation of channel bed evolution.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to develop a formula for the relationship between flow strength and sediment discharge. The appropriate definition of energy dissipation rate E in the theorem of Bagnold in 1966 is discussed and it is found that the sediment transport rate gt in unidirectional flows can be well predicted when E is defined as the product of bed shear stress τ0 and near bed velocity u*′. Then the linear relationship between u*′E and the sediment transport rate is examined using measured data. The good agreement between measured and predicted values indicates that the phenomena of sediment transport can be reasonably described by the near bed flow characteristics. As the hydrodynamic modelers are able to calculate the bed shear stress and near bed velocity in various cases now, thus the new relationship may provide numerical modelers a tool to calculate the sediment transport in rivers, estuaries and coastal waters. To prove this, the simplified analytical expressions of E and u*′ in wave-current flows and coastal waters are derived, the results are checked with the available data over a wide range of flow conditions; and good agreements are achieved, indicating that the presumption is valid in the cases investigated.  相似文献

Attention is given to the properties of sediment beds over the full range of conditions (silts to gravel), in particular the effect of fine silt on the bed composition and on initiation of motion (critical conditions) is discussed. High-quality bed-load transport data sets are identified and analyzed, showing that the bed-load transport in the sand range is related to velocity to power 2.5. The bed-load transport is not much affected by particle size. The prediction of bed roughness is addressed and the prediction of bed-load transport in steady river flow is extended to coastal flow applying an intrawave approach. Simplified bed-load transport formulas are presented, which can be used to obtain a quick estimate of bed-load transport in river and coastal flows. It is shown that the sediment transport of fine silts to coarse sand can be described in a unified model framework using fairly simple expressions. The proposed model is fully predictive in the sense that only the basic hydrodynamic parameters (depth, current velocity, wave height, wave period, etc.) and the basic sediment characteristics (d10, d50, d90, water temperature, and salinity) need to be known. The prediction of the effective bed roughness is an integral part of the model.  相似文献

The bed material found in gravel-bed streams is nonuniform in terms of grain size and can typically be classified as unimodal or bimodal. The latter type of sediment distribution is usually represented by two modes, one of sand size and another of gravel. For this case, the movement of one mode becomes nonlinearly influenced by the other. As a result, the presence of the two modes in a bimodal material complicates the calculation of bed-load transport rates. The present study proposes an approach to separate the calculation of bed-load transport rates for bimodal materials into two independent fractions of sand and gravel, thereby rendering the bed sediment into two unimodal components. This approach is accomplished by decoupling the two fractions through scaling the reference Shields stresses of the sand and gravel modes to match the value of the mode of unimodal materials. Consequently, the contribution of each fraction to bed load can be estimated using a suitable relation derived for unimodal materials. Laboratory and field bed-load data available in the literature are used to examine the validity of the overall approach.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to develop an unsteady 2D depth-averaged model for nonuniform sediment transport in alluvial channels. In this model, the orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system is adopted; the transport mechanisms of cohesive and noncohesive sediment are both embedded; the suspended load and bed load are treated separately. In addition, the processes of hydraulic sorting, armoring, and bed consolidation are also included in the model. The implicit two-step split-operator approach is used to solve the flow governing equations and the coupling approach with iterative method are used to solve the mass-conservation equation of suspended sediment, mass-conservation equation of active-layer sediment, and global mass-conservation equation for bed sediment simultaneously. Three sets of data, including suspension transport, degradation and aggradation cases for noncohesive sediment, and aggradation, degradation, and consolidation cases for cohesive sediment, have been demonstrated to show the rationality and accuracy of the model. Finally, the model is applied to evaluate the desilting efficiency for Ah Gong Diann Reservoir located in Taiwan to show its applicability.  相似文献
