Composites of natural rubber (NR) and short pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) were prepared on a laboratory two‐roll mill. The influences of untreated fiber content and orientation on the processing and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The dependence of extent of orientation on fiber concentration was also established. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions (1, 3, 5, and 7% w/v) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) (1, 3, and 5 wt % of fiber) were used to treat the surfaces of PALFs. FTIR and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were made of the treatments in terms of chemical composition and surface structure. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites were later studied. The fiber–matrix adhesion was also investigated using SEM technique. It was found that all surface modifications enhanced adhesion and tensile properties. The treatments with 5% NaOH and 1% BPO provided the best improvement of composite strength (28 and 57% respectively) when compared with that of untreated fiber. The PALF‐NR composites also exhibited better resistance to aging than its gum vulcanizate, especially when combined with the treated fibers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two surface modification methods—plasma surface treatment and chemical agent treatment—were used to investigate their effects on the surface properties of ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. In the analyses, performed using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, changes in weight, and scanning electron microscope observations, demonstrated that the two fiber‐surface‐modified composites formed between UHMWPE fiber and epoxy matrix exhibited improved interfacial adhesion and slight improvements in tensile strengths, but notable decreases in elongation, relative to those properties of the composites reinforced with the untreated UHMWPE fibers. In addition, three kinds of epoxy resins—neat DGEBA, polyurethane‐crosslinked DGEBA, and BHHBP‐DGEBA—were used as resin matrices to examine the tensile and elongation properties of their UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced composites. From stress/strain measurements and scanning electron microscope observations, the resin matrix improved the tensile strength apparently, but did not affect the elongation. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study, the mechanical and thermal properties of sisal fiber‐reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP)‐toughened epoxy composites were investigated. The sisal fibers were chemically treated with alkali (NaOH) and silane solutions in order to improve the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The chemical composition of resins and fibers was identified by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. The UP‐toughened epoxy blends were obtained by mixing UP (5, 10, and 15 wt%) into the epoxy resin. The fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by incorporating sisal fibers (10, 20, and 30 wt%) within the optimized UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes of the fibers and the adhesion between the fibers and the UP‐toughened epoxy system. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber (30 wt%) ‐reinforced composites increased by 83% and 55%, respectively, as compared with that of UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber and its composite exhibited higher thermal stability than the untreated and alkali‐treated fiber systems. An increase in storage modulus and glass transition temperature was observed for the UP‐toughened epoxy matrix on reinforcement with treated fibers. The water uptake behavior of both alkali and alkali‐silane‐treated fiber‐reinforced composites is found to be less as compared with the untreated fiber‐reinforced composite. J. VINYL ADDIT. An aqueous suspension deposition method was used to coat the sized carbon fibers T700SC and T300B with commercially carboxylic acid-functionalized and hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs on the fiber surfaces were expected to improve the interfacial strength between the fibers and the epoxy. The factors affecting the deposition, especially the fiber sizing, were studied. According to single fiber-composite fragmentation tests, the deposition process results in improved fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. Using carboxylic acid-functionalized CNTs, the interfacial shear strength was increased 43% for the T700SC composite and 12% for the T300B composite. The relationship between surface functional groups of the CNTs and the interfacial improvement was discussed. The interfacial reinforcing mechanism was explored by analyzing the surface morphology of the carbon fibers, the wettability between the carbon fibers and the epoxy resin, the chemical bonding between the fiber sizing and the CNTs, and fractographic observation of cross-sections of the composites. Results indicate that interfacial friction, chemical bonding and resin toughening are responsible for the interfacial improvement of nanostructured carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The mechanical properties of the CNT-deposited composite laminate were further measured to confirm the effectiveness of this strategy.

The effects of alkalization surface treatment on hemp fiber properties and the properties of hemp fiber–reinforced polyester composites have been studied. Hemp fibers were exposed to 1, 5, and 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions. The tensile properties and interfacial shear strength of all alkalized fibers were found to lie within the range of nonalkalized fibers. Laminates were made of alkalized fibers with unsaturated polyester resin, using hand lay‐up and compression moulding. Alkalization of fibers at low concentrations of 1 and 5% resulted in improvements in tensile and fatigue properties of composites made from these fibers, but no such improvements were observed for 10% alkalized fiber composites. The improvements were attributed to improvement in fiber/matrix bonding after this treatment, which was also confirmed by scanning electron microscopy images. No improvement in impact damage tolerance was observed for any of these three alkalized fiber composites. Immersion in distilled water reduced water absorption compared with nonalkalized fiber composites; however, the tensile properties in water were similar to those for nonalkalized fiber composites. The dynamic mechanical properties of randomly oriented intimately mixed hybrid composites based on pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) and glass fibers (GF) in unsaturated polyester (PER) matrix were investigated. The PALFs have high‐specific strength and improve the mechanical properties of the PER matrix. In this study, the volume ratio of the two fibers was varied by incorporating small amounts of GF such as PALF/GF, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, and 50/50, keeping the total fiber loading constant at 40 wt%. The dynamic modulus of the compositeswas found to increase on GF addition. The intimately mixed (IM) hybrid composites with PALF/GF, 80/20 (0.2 Vf GF) showed highest E′ values and least damping. Interestingly, the impact strength of the composites was minimum at this volume ratio. The composites with 0.46 Vf GF or PALF/GF (50/50) showed maximum damping behavior and highest impact strength. The results were compared with hybrid composites of different layering patterns such as GPG (GF skin and PALF core) and PGP (PALF skin and GF core). IM and GPG hybrid composites are found more effective than PGP. The activation energy values for the relaxation processes in different composites were calculated. The overall results showed that hybridization with GF enhanced the performance properties. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers

This work reported the effect of surface chemistry and roughness of electrospun fibers on fiber/matrix interfacial structures and the resultant macroscopical properties of composite films. Three types of fibrous mats composed of ultrafine fibers, that is, cellulose acetate (CANM), polyurethane (PUNM), and cellulose acetate/polyurethane composite (CAPUNM) were fabricated through electrospinning. CA fiber surfaces were rough with many hydroxyl groups; PU fiber surfaces were smooth, whereas CAPU composite fibers exhibited cocontiuous structure with rough surfaces. The fiber‐reinforced epoxy composite films were prepared by the solution impregnation method. The fractured surfaces of the composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Severe interfacial debonding and fiber pullouts were observed for PUNM/epoxy composites, while strong interfacial adhesion was formed for CANM/epoxy and CAPUNM/epoxy composites. The interfacial structure played important roles in the visible light transmittance of the composite films. For example, CANM/epoxy films showed the best optical property, whereas PUNM/epoxy films displayed the poorest light transmitting property and were translucent. The interfacial structure also affected the mechanical properties of the composites. The mechanical strength of fibrous mats followed an increasing order of CANM < CAPUNM < PUNM, but the mechanical strength of the composite films was in a reverse order, that is, CANM/epoxy > CAPUNM/epoxy > PUNM/epoxy. In certain applications of fiber reinforced polymer composites flexibility is required. The aim of this study was to improve flexibility of short glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites by using a liquid elastomer. For this purpose, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) based epoxy matrix was modified with hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB). A silane coupling agent (SCA) was also used to improve the interfacial adhesion between glass fibers and epoxy matrix. During specimen preparation, hardener and HTPB were premixed and left at room temperature for an hour before mixing with epoxy resin to allow possible reactions to occur. In order to compare flexibility of the specimens flexural tests were conducted and the data were evaluated numerically by using a derived relation. Test data and scanning electron microscope analysis indicated that surface treatment of glass fibers with SCA, and HTPB modification of epoxy matrix improved flexural properties especially due to the strong interaction between fibers, epoxy, and rubber. It was also observed that HTPB modification resulted in formation of relatively round rubber domains in the epoxy matrix leading to increased flexibility of the specimens.

Interests in improving poor interfacial adhesion in carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites has always been a hotspot. In this work, four physicochemical surface treatments for enhancing fiber/matrix adhesion are conducted on carbon fibers (CFs) including acid oxidation, sizing coating, silane coupling, and graphene oxide (GO) deposition. The surface characteristics of CFs are investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, interfacial shear strength, and interlaminar shear strength. The results showed that GO deposition can remarkably promote fiber/matrix bonding due to improved surface reactivity and irregularity. In comparison, epoxy sizing and acid oxidation afford enhancement of IFSS owing to effective molecular chemical contact and interlocking forces between the fiber and the matrix. Besides, limited covalent bonds between silane coupling and epoxy matrix cannot make up for the negative effects of excessive smoothness of modified CFs, endowing them inferior mechanical properties. Based on these results, three micro‐strengthening mechanisms are proposed to broadly categorize the interphase micro‐configuration of CFRP composite, namely, “Etching” “Coating”, and “Grafting” modifications, demonstrating that proper treatments should be chosen for combining optimum interfacial properties in CFRP composites.

In this article, modification of carbon fiber surface by carbon based nanofillers (multi-walled carbon nanotubes [CNT], carbon nanofibers, and multi-layered graphene) has been achieved by electrophoretic deposition technique to improve its interfacial bonding with epoxy matrix, with a target to improve the mechanical performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Flexural and short beam shear properties of the composites were studied at extreme temperature conditions; in-situ cryo, room and elevated temperature (−196, 30, and 120°C respectively). Laminate reinforced with CNT grafted carbon fibers exhibited highest delamination resistance with maximum improvement in flexural strength as well as in inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) among all the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composites at all in-situ temperatures. CNT modified CE composite showed increment of 9% in flexural strength and 17.43% in ILSS when compared to that of unmodified CE composite at room temperature (30°C). Thermomechanical properties were investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis. Fractography was also carried out to study different modes of failure of the composites.

This study intends to produce plasma polymer thin films of γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-GPS) on glass fibers in order to improve interfacial adhesion of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. A low frequency (LF) plasma generator was used for the plasma polymerization of γ-GPS on the surface of glass fibers at different plasma powers and exposure times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analyses of plasma polymerized glass fibers were conducted to obtain some information about surface properties of glass fibers. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of composites reinforced with plasma polymerized glass fiber were evaluated. The ILSS and IFSS values of non-plasma polymerized glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite were increased 110 and 53%, respectively, after plasma polymerization of γ-GPS at a plasma power of 60 W for 30 min. The improvement of interfacial adhesion was also confirmed by SEM observations of fractured surface of the composites.

In this work, composites based on a phenolic matrix and untreated‐ and treated sisal fibers were prepared. The treated sisal fibers used were those reacted with NaOH 2% solution and esterified using benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA). These treated fibers were modified with the objective of improving the adhesion of the fiber–matrix interface, which in turn influences the properties of the composites. BTDA was chosen as the esterifying agent to take advantage of the possibility of introducing the polar and aromatic groups that are also present in the matrix structure into the surface of the fiber, which could then intensify the interactions occurring in the fiber–matrix interface. The fibers were then analyzed by SEM and FTIR to ascertain their chemical composition. The results showed that the fibers had been successfully modified. The composites (reinforced with 15%, w/w of 3.0 cm length sisal fiber randomly distributed) were characterized by SEM, impact strength, and water absorption capacity. In the tests conducted, the response of the composites was affected both by properties of the matrix and the fibers, besides the interfacial properties of the fiber–matrix. Overall, the results showed that the fiber treatment resulted in a composite that was less hygroscopic although with somewhat lower impact strength, when compared with the composite reinforced with untreated sisal fibers.

In this study, glass fibers were modified using γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane of different concentrations to improve the interfacial adhesion at interfaces between fibers and matrix. Effects of γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites were investigated experimentally. Mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated by tensile tests, short beam tests, and flexural tests. The short‐beam method was used to measure the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of laminates. The tensile and flexural properties of composites were characterized by tensile and three‐point bending tests, respectively. The fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope. On comparing the results obtained for the different concentrations of silane solution, it was found that the 0.5% GPS silane treatment provided the best mechanical properties. The ILSS value of heat‐cleaned glass fiber reinforced composite is enhanced by ∼59% as a result of the glass fiber treatment with 0.5% γ‐GPS. Also, an improvement of about 37% in tensile strength, about 78% in flexural strength of the composite with the 0.5% γ‐GPS treatment of glass fibers was observed. POLYM. Water at the polymer/substrate interface is often the major cause of adhesion loss in coatings, adhesives, and fiber-reinforced polymer composites. This study critically assesses the relationship between the interfacial water layer and the adhesion loss in epoxy/siliceous substrate systems. Both untreated and silane-treated Si substrates and untreated and silane-treated E-glass fibers were used. Thickness of the interfacial water layer was measured on epoxy/Si systems by Fourier transform infrared-multiple total internal reflection (FTIR-MTIR) spectroscopy. Adhesion loss of epoxy/Si systems and epoxy/E-glass fiber composites was measured by peel adhesion and short-beam shear tests, respectively. Little water accumulation at the epoxy/Si substrate interface was observed for silane-treated Si substrates, but about 10 monolayers of water accumulated at the interface between the epoxy and the untreated Si substrate following 100 h of exposure at 24 °C. More than 70% of the initial epoxy/untreated Si system peel strength was lost within 75 h of exposure, compared with 20% loss after 600 h for the silane-treated Si samples. Shear strength loss in composites made with untreated E-glass fiber was nearly twice that of composites fabricated with silane-treated fiber after 6 months of immersion in 60 °C water. Further, the silane-treated composites remained transparent, but the untreated fiber composites became opaque after water exposure. Evidence from FTIR-MTIR spectroscopy, adhesion loss, and visual observation strongly indicated that a water layer at the polymer/substrate interface is mostly responsible for the adhesion loss of epoxy/untreated siliceous substrate systems and epoxy/untreated glass fiber composites and that FTIR-MTIR is a viable technique to reliably and conveniently assess the adhesion loss attributable to water sorption at the interface.

In this research, 9 series of ramie fibers were treated under low-temperature plasma with diverse output powers and treatment times. By analysis of the surface energy and adhesion power with epoxy resin, 3 groups as well as control group were chosen as reinforced fibers of composites. The influences of these parameters on the ramie fiber and its composites such as topography and mechanical properties were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), tensile property and fragmentation test of single-fiber composites. Contact angle and surface free energy results indicated that with the increased treatment times and output powers, surface energy and adhesion work with epoxy resin improved. Compared with the untreated fibers, surface energy and adhesion work with epoxy resin grew 124.5 and 59.1% after 3 min-200 w treatment. SEM and AFM showed low temperature plasma treatment etched the surface of ramie fiber to enhance the coherence between fiber and resin, consequently fiber was not easy to pull-out. After 3 min-200 w treatment, tensile strength of ramie fiber was 253.8 MPa, it had about 30.5% more than that of untreated fiber reinforced composite. Interface shear stress was complicated which was affected by properties of fiber, resin and interface. Fragmentation test showed biggest interface shear stress achieved 17.2 MPa, which represented a 54.0% increase over untreated fiber reinforced composites.

To obtain comprehensive knowledge of the interfacial effect on the impact performance of sisal fiber reinforced epoxy composites, the fiber surface was modified in different ways prior to compounding. By using a surface tensiometer and dynamic mechanical analyzer, interfacial interactions in the composites were characterized. The results indicated that the chemical treatments brought about strong bonding between sisal bundles and the epoxy matrix. The subsequent impact tests revealed that the microfailure mechanism involved is a function of interfacial adhesion and fiber length continuity (i.e., continuous or discontinuous fiber). In the case of unidirectional laminates, an optimum fiber treatment should be able to result in an increased affinity between fiber bundles and matrix and a decreased intercellular adhesion. In this way, extension and uncoiling of the spirally arranged microfibrils, a main energy consumption process of plant fibers, can impart significant toughness to the composites. For short fiber composites, the interfacial strength should be properly tailored so as to increase energy dissipation through debonding and pullout of fiber bundles.

Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) was used as a reinforcement in polyolefins. Polypropylene (PP) and low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) composites with different fiber lengths (long and short fibers) and fiber contents (0–25%) were prepared and characterized. The results showed that the tensile strength of the composites increased when the PALF contents were increased. It was observed that the composites containing long fiber PALF were stronger than the short fiber composites as determined by greater tensile strength. An SEM study on the tensile fractured surface confirmed the homogeneous dispersion of the long fibers in the polymer matrixes better than dispersion of the short fibers. The unidirectional arrangement of the long fibers provided good interfacial bonding between the PALF and polymer which was a crucial factor in achieving high strength composites. Reduction in crystallinity of the composites, as evident from XRD and DSC studies suggested that the reinforcing effect of PALF played an important role in enhancing their mechanical strength. From the rule of mixtures, the stress efficiency factors of the composite strength could be calculated. The stress efficiency factors of LDPE were greater than those of PP. This would possibly explain why the high modulus fiber (PALF) had better load transfers to the ductile matrix of LDPE than the brittle matrix of PP. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
