Designing metallic cellular structures with triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) is a novel approach for preparing multifunctional and lightweight metamaterials. TPMS-structured Batwing Al cellular metamaterials are fabricated using selective laser melting. The mechanical performance, failure/deformation modes, and energy absorption capacity of the metamaterials are investigated. It is demonstrated in experimental results that the unit cell structure has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the metamaterials, and that the sample with large wall thickness exhibits excellent mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity. Furthermore, the Gibson–Ashby equation is developed to estimate the mechanical properties of the Batwing-type Al cellular metamaterials. Herein, a theoretical foundation is provided in these findings for the engineering application of phase-pure Al, which is typically unsuitable as a structural material due to its low yield strength.  相似文献

Mechanical metamaterials inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding have gained considerable attention because of their potential to yield deployable and highly tunable assemblies. The inherent foldability of origami structures enlarges the material design space with remarkable properties such as auxeticity and high deformation recoverability and deployability, the latter being key in applications where spatial constraints are pivotal. This work integrates the results of the design, 3D direct laser writing fabrication, and in situ scanning electron microscopic mechanical characterization of microscale origami metamaterials, based on the multimodal assembly of Miura‐Ori tubes. The origami‐architected metamaterials, achieved by means of microfabrication, display remarkable mechanical properties: stiffness and Poisson’s ratio tunable anisotropy, large degree of shape recoverability, multistability, and even reversible auxeticity whereby the metamaterial switches Poisson’s ratio sign during deformation. The findings here reported underscore the scalable and multifunctional nature of origami designs, and pave the way toward harnessing the power of origami engineering at small scales.  相似文献

The research of metamaterials has achieved enormous success in the manipulation of light in a prescribed manner using delicately designed subwavelength structures, so‐called meta‐atoms. Even though modern numerical methods allow for the accurate calculation of the optical response of complex structures, the inverse design of metamaterials, which aims to retrieve the optimal structure according to given requirements, is still a challenging task owing to the nonintuitive and nonunique relationship between physical structures and optical responses. To better unveil this implicit relationship and thus facilitate metamaterial designs, it is proposed to represent metamaterials and model the inverse design problem in a probabilistically generative manner, enabling to elegantly investigate the complex structure–performance relationship in an interpretable way, and solve the one‐to‐many mapping issue that is intractable in a deterministic model. Moreover, to alleviate the burden of numerical calculations when collecting data, a semisupervised learning strategy is developed that allows the model to utilize unlabeled data in addition to labeled data in an end‐to‐end training. On a data‐driven basis, the proposed deep generative model can serve as a comprehensive and efficient tool that accelerates the design, characterization, and even new discovery in the research domain of metamaterials, and photonics in general.  相似文献

Here we review recent studies of mechanical metamaterials originating from or closely related to marginally jammed solids. Unlike previous approaches mainly focusing on the design of building blocks to form periodic metamaterials, the design and realization of such metamaterials exploit two special aspects of jammed solids, disorder and isostaticity. Due to the disorder, every single bond of jammed solids is unique. Such a bond uniqueness facilitates the flexible adjustment of the global and local elastic responses of unstressed spring networks derived from jammed solids, leading to auxetic materials with negative Poisson’s ratio and bionic metamaterials to realize allostery and flow controls. The disorder also causes plastic instabilities of jammed solids under load. The jammed networks are thus inherently metamaterials exhibiting multi-functions such as auxeticity, negative compressibility, and energy absorption. Taking advantage of isostaticity, topological mechanical metamaterials analogous to electronic materials such as topological insulators have also been realized, while jammed networks inherently occupy such topological features. The presence of disorder greatly challenges our understanding of jammed solids, but it also provides us with more freedoms and opportunities to design mechanical metamaterials.  相似文献

Elastic mechanical metamaterials are the exemplar of periodic structures. These are artificially designed structures having idiosyncratic physical properties like negative mass and negative Young’s modulus in specific frequency ranges. These extreme physical properties are due to the spatial periodicity of mechanical unit cells, which exhibit local resonance. That is why scientists are researching the dynamics of these structures for decades. This unusual dynamic behavior is frequency contingent, which modulates wave propagation through these structures. Locally resonant units in the designed metamaterial facilitate bandgap formation virtually at any frequency for wavelengths much higher than the lattice length of a unit. Here, we analyze the band structure of piezo-embedded negative mass metamaterial using the generalized Bloch theorem. For a finite number of the metamaterial units coupled equation of motion of the system is deduced, considering purely resistive and shunted inductor energy harvesting circuits. Successively, the voltage and power produced by piezoelectric material along with transmissibility of the system are computed using the backward substitution method. The addition of the piezoelectric material at the resonating unit increases the complexity of the solution. The results elucidate, the insertion of the piezoelectric material in the resonating unit provides better tunability in the band structure for simultaneous energy harvesting and vibration attenuation. Non-dimensional analysis of the system gives physical parameters that govern the formation of mechanical and electromechanical bandgaps. Optimized numerical values of these system parameters are also found for maximum first attenuation bandwidth. Thus, broader bandgap generation enhances vibration attenuation, and energy harvesting can be simultaneously available, making these structures multifunctional. This exploration can be considered as a step towards the active elastic mechanical metamaterials design.

In this article, we research the tensile behavior mechanical metamaterial based on the 3D projections of 4D geometries (4-polytopes). The specific properties of these mechanical metamaterials can be enhanced by more than fourfold when optimized within a framework powered by an evolutionary algorithm. We show that the best-performing metamaterial structure, the 8-cell (tesseract), has specific yield strength and specific stiffness values in a similar range to those of hexagonal honeycombs tested out-of-plane. The 8-cell structures are also cubically symmetrical and have the same mechanical properties in three orthogonal axes. The effect of structure is quantified by comparing metamaterial tensile strength against the Young's modulus of constituent solid material. We find that the strength-to-modulus value of the 8-cell structures exceeds that of the hexagonal honeycomb by 76%. The 5-cell (pentatope) and 16-cell (orthoplex) metamaterials are shown to be more effective under tensile loading than gyroid structures, while 24-cell (octaplex) structures display the least optimal structure-properties relationships. The findings presented in this paper showcase the importance of macro-scale architecture and highlight the potential of 3D projections of 4-polytopes as the basis for a new class of mechanical metamaterial.  相似文献

A synthesis strategy for mechanical devices   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Good mechanical designs are often composed of highly integrated, tightly coupled components in which the interactions among the components are essential to the function and economic execution of the design. This assertion runs counter to design methodologies in other engineering fields, such as software design and circuit design, that advocate designs in which each component fulfills a single function with minimal interaction. Because of the geometry, weight, and cost of mechanical components, converting a single functional requirement into a single component is usually not practical. Each component may contribute to the performance of more than one function, and the performance of each function may be distributed over many components. In fact, most mechanical components perform not only the desired function, but also have many additional, unintended behaviors. In good mechanical designs, these additional behaviors often are exploited. We describe a synthesis strategy to utilize these behaviors by transforming design specifications in a function-preserving manner to obtain function structures which correspond closely to collections of available components. This strategy is elaborated in the context of simple gearbox design. We feel that design strategies derived from characteristics of good designs will foster improved design practice and facilitate the development of computer-based assistance to the designer.  相似文献

Hybrid chiral mechanical metamaterials with center squares connecting by bi-layer strips (bi-strips) with patterned interfaces are designed and fabricated via multimaterial 3D printing. Due to the thermal mismatch between the bi-strips and the chirality-induced rotation, the designs will undergo either thermal expansion or shrinkage under constant temperature increase, resulting in widely tuned overall thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) for the chiral mechanical metamaterials. Analytical models of both the bi-strips with arbitrary dissimilar interface morphology and the chiral designs under temperature change are developed to predict the curvature of the bi-strips and the overall CTEs of the chiral designs. Two design regions with opposite trends are observed and explored. The models are verified via systematic finite element (FE) simulations and experiments on 3D-printed specimens. This investigation enlarges the design space of chiral mechanical metamaterials for achieving desired CTEs in a wide range.  相似文献

The concept of metamaterials originates from the proposal of left-hand materials with negative refractive index, followed by which, varieties of metamaterials with kinds of fantastic properties that cannot be found in natural materials, such as zero/negative Poisson’s ratio, electromagnetic/acoustic/thermal cloaking effect, etc., were come up with. According to their application fields, the metamaterials are roughly classified into four categories, electromagnetic metamaterials, acoustic metamaterials, thermal metamaterials, and mechanical metamaterials. By designing structures and arranging the distribution of materials with different physical parameters, the function of metamaterials can be realized in theory. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology provides a more direct and efficient way to achieve a sample of metamaterial and experiment verification due to the great advantages in fabricating complex structures. In this review, we introduce the typical metamaterials in different application situations and their design methods. In particular, we are focused on the fabrication of metamaterials and the application status of AM technology in them. Furthermore, we discuss the limits of present metamaterials in the aspect of design method and the disadvantages of existing AM technology, as well as the development tendency of metamaterials.  相似文献

Photonic metamaterials allow for a range of exciting applications unattainable with ordinary dielectrics. However, the metallic nature of their meta-atoms may result in increased optical losses. Gain-enhanced metamaterials are a potential solution to this problem, but the conception of realistic, three-dimensional designs is a challenging task. Starting from fundamental electrodynamic and quantum mechanical equations, we establish and deploy a rigorous theoretical model for the spatial and temporal interaction of lightwaves with free and bound electrons inside and around metallic (nano-) structures and gain media. The derived numerical framework allows us to self-consistently study the dynamics and impact of the coherent plasmon-gain interaction, nonlinear saturation, field enhancement, radiative damping and spatial dispersion. Using numerical pump-probe experiments on a double-fishnet metamaterial structure with dye molecule inclusions, we investigate the build-up of the inversion profile and the formation of the plasmonic modes in a low-Q cavity. We find that full loss compensation occurs in a regime where the real part of the effective refractive index of the metamaterial becomes more negative compared to the passive case. Our results provide a deep insight into how internal processes affect the overall optical properties of active photonic metamaterials fostering new approaches to the design of practical, loss-compensated plasmonic nanostructures.  相似文献

Most natural materials expand uniformly in all directions upon heating. Artificial, engineered systems offer opportunities to tune thermal expansion properties in interesting ways. Previous reports exploit diverse design principles and fabrication techniques to achieve a negative or ultralow coefficient of thermal expansion, but very few demonstrate tunability over different behaviors. This work presents a collection of 2D material structures that exploit bimaterial serpentine lattices with micrometer feature sizes as the basis of a mechanical metamaterials system capable of supporting positive/negative, isotropic/anisotropic, and homogeneous/heterogeneous thermal expansion properties, with additional features in unusual shearing, bending, and gradient modes of thermal expansion. Control over the thermal expansion tensor achieved in this way provides a continuum‐mechanics platform for advanced strain‐field engineering, including examples of 2D metamaterials that transform into 3D surfaces upon heating. Integrated electrical and optical sources of thermal actuation provide capabilities for reversible shape reconfiguration with response times of less than 1 s, as the basis of dynamically responsive metamaterials.  相似文献

A ubiquitous biological material, keratin represents a group of insoluble, usually high-sulfur content and filament-forming proteins, constituting the bulk of epidermal appendages such as hair, nails, claws, turtle scutes, horns, whale baleen, beaks, and feathers. These keratinous materials are formed by cells filled with keratin and are considered ‘dead tissues’. Nevertheless, they are among the toughest biological materials, serving as a wide variety of interesting functions, e.g. scales to armor body, horns to combat aggressors, hagfish slime as defense against predators, nails and claws to increase prehension, hair and fur to protect against the environment. The vivid inspiring examples can offer useful solutions to design new structural and functional materials.Keratins can be classified as α- and β-types. Both show a characteristic filament-matrix structure: 7 nm diameter intermediate filaments for α-keratin, and 3 nm diameter filaments for β-keratin. Both are embedded in an amorphous keratin matrix. The molecular unit of intermediate filaments is a coiled-coil heterodimer and that of β-keratin filament is a pleated sheet. The mechanical response of α-keratin has been extensively studied and shows linear Hookean, yield and post-yield regions, and in some cases, a high reversible elastic deformation. Thus, they can be also be considered ‘biopolymers’. On the other hand, β-keratin has not been investigated as comprehensively. Keratinous materials are strain-rate sensitive, and the effect of hydration is significant.Keratinous materials exhibit a complex hierarchical structure: polypeptide chains and filament-matrix structures at the nanoscale, organization of keratinized cells into lamellar, tubular–intertubular, fiber or layered structures at the microscale, and solid, compact sheaths over porous core, sandwich or threads at the macroscale. These produce a wide range of mechanical properties: the Young’s modulus ranges from 10 MPa in stratum corneum to about 2.5 GPa in feathers, and the tensile strength varies from 2 MPa in stratum corneum to 530 MPa in dry hagfish slime threads. Therefore, they are able to serve various functions including diffusion barrier, buffering external attack, energy-absorption, impact-resistance, piercing opponents, withstanding repeated stress and aerodynamic forces, and resisting buckling and penetration.A fascinating part of the new frontier of materials study is the development of bioinspired materials and designs. A comprehensive understanding of the biochemistry, structure and mechanical properties of keratins and keratinous materials is of great importance for keratin-based bioinspired materials and designs. Current bioinspired efforts including the manufacturing of quill-inspired aluminum composites, animal horn-inspired SiC composites, and feather-inspired interlayered composites are presented and novel avenues for research are discussed. The first inroads into molecular-based biomimicry are being currently made, and it is hoped that this approach will yield novel biopolymers through recombinant DNA and self-assembly. We also identify areas of research where knowledge development is still needed to elucidate structures and deformation/failure mechanisms.  相似文献

The study of advanced artificial electromagnetic materials, known as metamaterials, provides a link from material science to theoretical and applied electrodynamics, as well as to electrical engineering. Being initially intended mainly to achieve negative refraction, the concept of metamaterials quickly covered a much broader range of applications, from microwaves to optics and even acoustics. In particular, nonlinear metamaterials established a new research direction giving rise to fruitful ideas for tunable and active artificial materials. Here we introduce the concept of magnetoelastic metamaterials, where a new type of nonlinear response emerges from mutual interaction. This is achieved by providing a mechanical degree of freedom so that the electromagnetic interaction in the metamaterial lattice is coupled to elastic interaction. This enables the electromagnetically induced forces to change the metamaterial structure, dynamically tuning its effective properties. This concept leads to a new generation of metamaterials, and can be compared to such fundamental concepts of modern physics as optomechanics of photonic structures or magnetoelasticity in magnetic materials.  相似文献
