Reviews the book, Language in the Americas by Joseph H. Greenberg (1987). Greenberg's work on universals of language has crossed disciplinary boundaries to become known to many psychologists interested in language. His equally important work in language classification, of which Language in the Americas is one part, remains unfamiliar to psychologists. This book is a pioneering work in that it is the first genetic classification of the indigenous languages of both North and South America. Greenberg maintains that all of the languages of the Americas belong to three families: Eskimo-Aleut, Na-Dene, and a family that he has named Amerind. This assertion is both important and controversial; the controversy lies in the grouping of most of the languages including all of those of South and Central America into the Amerind family. Most of Language in the Americas consists of the Amerind etymological dictionary, arranged so that the reader can assess lexical similarities within and between subgroups. Greenberg's discussion is informed, articulate, profound, and to the point. He draws on relevant sources and examples from diverse fields of knowledge. The depth and breadth of his scholarship and the clarity of his presentation create a work that is an intellectual pleasure to read. Reviews the book, Learning disabilities and brain function: A neuropsychological approach (rev. ed.), by William H. Gaddes (1985). The neurological substrata of intellectual functioning have long been a topic of interest to psychologists; but with the development of the learning disabilities classification and the interest in the brain, learning behavior relationships have expanded to include the entire educational community. This book, like the first edition, has been designed to draw together the neuropsychologist, the school psychologist, and teacher in common cause. In doing so, it helps to bridge a traditional interdisciplinary communications gap. There is a need for neuropsychological training of school psychologists. This book helps to bring this knowledge to bear directly on practice in the field of learning disabilities. Advantages of the second edition over the first are the inclusion of discussions of new techniques (i.e., new brain scanning devices and methods, new applications of dichotic listening) and expanded examples of case studies. The reviewers feel that Gaddes has provided an updated, thorough treatment of the role of neuropsychology in the diagnosis and remediation of the learning-disabled child. Reviews the book, Succeeding in private practice: A business guide for psychotherapists by Eileen S. Lenson (1994). Lenson, a social worker, has produced a usable and well thought out overview for any psychotherapy practitioner considering private practice. She suggests more than a dozen points such as freedom from routine, the need to be an energetic self-starter, and ability to delay gratification to determine fitness for private practice. After reviewing the various forms for a business (solo, partnership, corporation), Lenson outlines setting up an office and arranging for necessary supplies and services. Only a paragraph or so is allotted to each item, including computers, and the use of consultants such as accountants and attorneys. Lenson's real strengths are in the thorough and detailed discussion she provides for the business of doing business, including record keeping, fee setting, personnel issues, taxes, and marketing. She has drawn extensively from her own experience as well as from Psychotherapy Finances and Practice Builder, two specialized publications for professional practitioners. Chapters on office paperwork, insurance, and collections could stand alone as procedures manuals, they are so well-organized and comprehensive. Sample forms included are clear and attractively laid out. Succeeding in Private Practice is well-organized, attractively laid out with short paragraphs, thorough indexing, and numbered or bulleted lists. It lends itself well for use as a handbook since topics can be found easily. Let this book by Eileen Lenson be the first or second on a list for the beginning practitioner who must then go on to read many other works and seek advice from experienced psychotherapists in his or her own field. Reviews the book, Post-traumatic stress disorder in children edited by Spencer Eth and Robert Pynoos (1985). This book consists of 9 chapters covering 186 pages. Taken collectively, it is apparent that this book reflects a preliminary attempt to deal with the DSM-III nosology as it applies to children. The editors are to be commended for having seized the initiative in this regard. They should also be recognized for devoting separate chapters to various classes of traumata as this approach presents clearer symptomological and epidemiological information. On the other hand, most of the information that is provided is anecdotal and somewhat repetitive. A detailed (i.e., operational) protocol for assessment and treatment is not provided. The book also fails to consider theoretical issues that are apparent in the literature such as the debate over the validity of the classification as a psychiatric entity. In short, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children provides an important but preliminary contribution to the literature. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
