Some of these companies have been remarkably successful but many have failed or struggled to survive. The author examines whether a different approach have led to a greater number of success stories     

Prediction of solvency in construction companies

This paper reviews two models for testing the financial security of construction companies. It discusses the utility of the ratio analysis technique and the Z model in predicting whether companies are heading for insolvency. It then applies these techniques to three construction companies which failed within the last 5 years to test whether the theoretical predictions prescribed in the techniques are applicable to the construction industry. It concludes that whilst the techniques are of value in predicting some difficulties they need to be used in conjunction with financial performance data of other construction firms, in this way comparisons may be made. The development of a refined and construction specific Z model is recommended.

本文以定性研究的方法分析近代日本都市商圈的形成过程以及民营铁路企业与百货零售业的关联性。在城市商圈发展的构成上，交通运输的便利性，大型零售业，尤其是百货公司扮演着不可或缺的重要角色。近代日本都市商圈形成的最大特色是民营铁路企业的参与。铁路公司业务的拓展除了交通运输以外，还延伸到了土地和商业房地产的开发。其多元化的经营改变了都市的传统商业格局。铁路企业经营房地产开发在英国等其他国家也有例可循，但兼营流通业却非常罕见。充分利用铁路沿线和车站的优势，打遣出现代化的都市商圈是日本特有的多元化经营模式。     

Mechanization of underground mining: a quick look backward and forward

Mine mechanization, especially the mechanization of underground hard rock mines provides a large potential for reduced costs and improved profitability. This paper examines a number of successful developments mechanizing underground mine excavation, including raises, shafts, tunnels, and stopes. It then examines mechanization developments, which are under way, and others which are not yet being developed. A look back at mine mechanization projects that have failed is included as a perspective when considering projects for the future. Factors influencing the development of mine mechanization are reviewed, as well as some of the factors that will be required for successful mechanization in the future. It appears that the development of mechanization for fundamentally new mining systems will require complex joint ventures involving mining companies, equipment suppliers, governments, and academic partners working together on a long-term commitment. These technical joint ventures will require long-term commitments of capital to produce the technology that will be required for mechanizing the underground mines of the future.

Drowned in an inch of water: How poor regulation has weakened the Italian water reform

Italy reformed its water and sanitation services in 1994. The strategy aimed at transforming public entities, financed by the central budget, into self-sufficient professional companies regulated at arms' length. Nearly 20 years after, the reform has failed to deliver (despite some partial success). Italians have been divided in two parties: those blaming public sector inefficiencies and calling for competitive tendering; and those refusing to privatize water and willing to go back to the fiscal budget. In this article, we suggest that both parties are wrong. Underperformance is not related to the ownership structure of water companies, but rather to poor regulatory design and lack of understanding of the regulatory requirements that are implicit in the management model chosen, namely the concession contract.
