Much of the work in today's service industries requires women to deal with people outside of their organizations, namely, customers and clients, yet research on sexual harassment has focused almost exclusively on sexual harassment within organizations. Because the threat of harassment also operates at the boundaries of organizations, our existing models based solely on harassment inside organizations may be too restricted to adequately explain the harassment experiences of women in today's economy. To address this, the authors introduce a theoretical model of the antecedents and consequences of sexual harassment by clients and customers (CSH) and describe 2 field studies conducted to test components of the model. In Study 1, they developed a model of antecedents and consequences of CSH and illustrated that certain contextual factors (client power and gender composition of the client base) affect levels of CSH and that CSH is related to a number of job and psychological outcomes among professional women. Study 2 revealed that CSH is related to lower job satisfaction among nonprofessional women, above and beyond that which is accounted for by internal sexual harassment. Phloretin and its analogs adsorb to the surfaces of lipid monolayers and bilayers and decrease the dipole potential. This reduces the conductance for anions and increases that for cations on artificial and biological membranes. The relationship between the change in the dipole potential and the aqueous concentration of phloretin has been explained previously by a Langmuir adsorption isotherm and a weak and therefore negligible contribution of the dipole-dipole interactions in the lipid surface. We demonstrate here that the Langmuir adsorption isotherm alone is not able to properly describe the effects of dipole molecule binding to lipid surfaces--we found significant deviations between experimental data and the fit with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. We present here an alternative theoretical treatment that takes into account the strong interaction between membrane (monolayer) dipole field and the dipole moment of the adsorbed molecule. This treatment provides a much better fit of the experimental results derived from the measurements of surface potentials of lipid monolayers in the presence of phloretin. Similarly, the theory provides a much better fit of the phloretin-induced changes in the dipole potential of lipid bilayers, as assessed by the transport kinetics of the lipophilic ion dipicrylamine. 相似文献

Gastric carcinomas with DNA replication errors (RER phenotype) display a particular clinicopathologic profile and carry a putative favorable prognosis. The RER phenotype has been identified as microsatellite instability in noncoding regions, as well as in repeat sequences within exons of several "target genes": TGFbeta RII, IGFII R, and BAX. In an attempt to find out whether the RER status is a significant prognostic factor in gastric carcinoma in a multivariate analysis and whether the clinicopathological features of the RER+ tumors are associated with mutations in the "target genes," we evaluated a series of 152 cases of sporadic gastric carcinoma. Five or six microsatellite loci and/or BAT 26, a poly(A) tract, were analyzed in each case using polymerase chain reaction and electrophoresis. Thirty-five cases (23.0%) were RER+. The RER phenotype was closely associated with a low pTNM stage and carried a significantly better prognosis. The repeat sequences of the target genes were screened for mutations in 28 RER+ and 13 RER-tumors. Mutations in TGFbeta RII occurred in 67.9% of the RER+ tumors and were significantly associated with the glandular histotype. IGFII R and BAX mutations occurred, respectively, in 25.0% and 32.1% of the cases; there was a trend toward an association between mutations in these genes and decreased nodal metastization and wall invasiveness, respectively. We conclude that the RER status is a significant prognostic indicator in gastric carcinoma and that such prognostic influence may be mediated by mutations in TGFbeta RII, IGFII R, and BAX genes. 相似文献
