Dietary factors that alter fermentability, NDF content, or particle size of the diet were evaluated for their effects on chewing behavior and distribution and passage of feed particles in the digestive tract of dairy cows. A double 4 x 4 quasi-Latin square design with a 2(3) factorial arrangement of treatments was used. The dietary factors were: extent of barley grain processing, coarse (1.60 mm) or flat (1.36 mm); forage-to-concentrate ratio (F:C), low (35:65) or high (55:45) (dry matter basis); and forage particle length, long (7.59 mm) or short (6.08 mm). Eight lactating cows with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were offered ad libitum access to total mixed diets. Chewing time, expressed as minutes per day or per kilogram of dry matter or neutral detergent fiber (NDF), was increased with high F:C diets due to increased eating and ruminating times but was decreased when expressed per kilogram of NDF intake from forage. The influence of forage particle length or grain processing on chewing activity was less pronounced than F:C ratio. Chewing activity was positively correlated to proportion of long forage particles in the diet but not to particle length of the diets. Influence of feed particle size on particle size distribution in different sites of the digestive tract was minimal. Particle size distributions of duodenal digesta and feces differed; the proportion of particles retained on the 3.35- or 1.18-mm screens was higher, but proportion of particles that passed through the 1.18-mm screen was lower in duodenal digesta than in feces. Relationships between chewing activities and ruminal pH or fractional passage rate of rumen contents were not significant. These results indicate that particle size of barley-based diets was not a reliable indicator of chewing activity. Forage particle size and NDF content of the diets were more reliable indicators of chewing activity than was the NDF content of forage. Fecal particle size was not an appropriate means of estimating the size of particles exiting the reticulorumen, at least for barley-based diets. Breakdown of coarse particles was necessary, but not a rate-limiting step for particles exiting the rumen. Passage rate of the rumen contents was affected by numerous factors including chewing activity.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to determine particle size of masticates, ruminal digesta, and feces of dairy cows. In Trial 1, three Holstein cows with ruminal cannulae were fed prebloom alfalfa hay in long, chopped, or pelleted form in a Latin square design (21-d periods) conducted in early lactation (wk 3 to 11) and again during the dry period to attain high (3.75) and low (1.95% of BW) feed consumption. In trial 2, prebloom, midbloom, and full bloom alfalfa hay, mature bromegrass hay, and corn silage were fed to early lactation (wk 5 to 15) Holsteins in a 5 X 5 Latin square design (15-d periods). All diets (Trials 1 and 2) were formulated to 17% CP and contained forage:grain in a 60:40 ratio (DM basis). Similar particle distributions of digesta from long and chopped hay diets suggest little influence of chopping forage on particle size reduction when high quality forage is fed. The large proportion of DM in the small particle (less than .6 mm) pool in the rumen in both trials suggests that rate of escape of small particles from the rumen is an important factor influencing ruminal retention time. Increased proportion of coarse (greater than or equal to 2.36-mm screen) fecal particles at high intake and with fine grinding appears related to a reduction in chewing per unit feed consumed. Soluble DM and particulate matter passing a .063-mm screen made up a significant portion (30 to 50%) of the total DM sieved from all sampling sites in both trials.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to study the effects of forage intake and physical form on lactating cow performance. In trial 1, four cows in a 4 X 4 Latin square were fed long alfalfa hay at 28, 36, 45, and 53% of total dry matter plus concentrate. Total dry matter intake was not affected by forage percent. Total chewing time and milk fat percentage increased linearly with increasing forage consumption. Maximum 4% fat-corrected milk production occurred when diets contained 27% neutral detergent fiber and 18% acid detergent fiber. In trial 2, four cows in a 4 X 4 Latin square were fed diets of chopped alfalfa hay and concentrate in proportions to supply 27.4% total ration neutral detergent fiber. Mean particle length measured with an oscillating screen particle separator of the chopped hay was .26, .46, .64, and .90 cm. Total dry matter and forage dry matter intakes and total chewing were not influenced by forage mean particle length. Mean particle length did not affect actual milk or 4% fat-corrected milk production. Depression of milk fat percentage was prevented when forage mean particle length was greater than or equal .64 cm. Apparent digestibility of dietary constituents and rate of passage of hay and concentrate was not influenced by forage intake or physical form.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted during consecutive summers to compare performance of lactating cows fed four varieties of tall fescue soilage. The first trial was conducted in 1983 and the second in 1984 using 25 midlactation Holsteins. Treatments included endophyte-free Kenhy; 8.1% endophyte-infected Johnstone (a prevarietal release); endophyte-free Kentucky 31; 63% endophyte-infected Kentucky 31; and orchardgrass or alfalfa as controls. In 1983, concentrate was fed twice each day at the rate of 4.1 kg per feeding, and in 1984, 4.5 kg were fed twice daily for first 4 wk and 4.1 kg per feeding thereafter. Intake of Kenhy was higher than all other tall fescue treatments when data for both trials were combined. Means of the high endophyte Kentucky 31 group were lower than all other treatments during both trials for milk yield, dry matter intake, body weight change, and serum prolactin in 1984 while higher for rectal temperature. Improved intake and performance of the cows consuming Kenhy compared with those consuming endophyte-free Kentucky 31 indicated the improved forage quality of this variety. Decreased performance of dairy cows consuming endophyte-infected tall fescue, even at a relatively low infection, was evident.  相似文献

Within-farm variation in forage composition can be substantial and potentially costly, and it presents challenges for sampling the forage accurately. We hypothesized that day-to-day variation in forage neutral detergent fiber (FNDF) concentrations and diet variation caused by sampling error would have negative effects on production measures in lactating dairy cows. Twenty-four Holstein cows (73 d in milk) were used in 8 replicated 3 × 3 Latin squares with 21-d periods. Treatments were (1) control (CON), (2) variable (VAR), and (3) overreacting (ORR). On average, over the 21-d period, all 3 treatments were the same [24.7% FNDF and 48.2% forage dry matter (DM) composed of 67% alfalfa silage and 33% grass silage]. The CON treatment was essentially consistent day-to-day in total forage and FNDF concentrations and proportion of alfalfa and grass silages. The VAR treatment changed daily (in a random pattern) in proportion of alfalfa and grass silages fed, which resulted in day-to-day changes in FNDF (range was 21.5 to 28%). The ORR treatment varied in a 5-d cyclic pattern in total forage and FNDF concentrations (26, 24, 28, and 21.5% FNDF). Over the 21 d, ORR (25.1 kg/d) had higher DM intake compared with CON (24.5 kg/d) and VAR (24.3 kg/d). Milk production (42.8 kg/d), milk fat (3.5%), and milk protein (2.8%) were not affected by treatment; however, a treatment × day interaction was observed for milk production. Lower daily milk yields for VAR and ORR compared with CON were rare; they only followed sustained 4- and 5-d periods of feeding higher FNDF diets compared with CON. In contrast, increased daily milk yields for VAR and ORR versus CON were more frequent and followed sustained diet changes of only 2 or 3 d. Lipolytic and lipogenic-related enzyme mRNA abundances in subcutaneous adipose tissue were not affected by treatment. Treatment × day interactions were observed for milk fatty acid markers of cellulolytic bacteria (iso-14:0, iso-15:0, iso-16:0) and lipolysis (18:0) and generally followed the expected response to changes in daily rations. Overall, extreme daily fluctuations in FNDF had no cumulative negative effect on production measures over a 21-d period, and daily responses to transient increases in FNDF were less than expected.  相似文献

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) was induced by replacing 25% of the total mixed ration intake [dry matter (DM) basis] with pellets consisting of 50% wheat and 50% barley. This reduced dietary forage content (DM basis) from 39.7 to 29.8% and increased the dietary concentrate content from 60.3 to 70.2%. Induction of SARA reduced the 24- and 48-h in situ neutral detergent fiber (NDF) degradabilities of grass hay numerically from 31.5% to 24.6% (P = 0.29) and from 51.3% to 36.9% (P < 0.05), respectively. The 24- and 48-h in situ NDF degradabilities of legume hay were reduced from 35.3 to 26.3% (P < 0.05) and from 49.0 to 35.8% (P < 0.05), respectively. The 24- and 48-h in situ NDF degradabilities of corn silage were reduced from 44.0 to 37.2% (P < 0.05) and from 56.1 to 44.8% (P < 0.05), respectively. This study suggests that induction of SARA by excess feeding of wheat/barley pellets reduces the rumen digestion of NDF from grass hay, legume hay, and corn silage.  相似文献

Twelve early lactation Holstein cows (4 fistulated) were used in replicated 4x4 Latin squares with 4-wk periods to determine the effective neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of wet corn gluten feed and to measure the effect of forage particle size on ruminal mat consistency and passage rate of wet corn gluten feed. Diets were 1) 23.3% NDF (17.4 percentage units of NDF from alfalfa silage), 2) diet 1 plus 11.1 additional percentage units of NDF from alfalfa silage, 3) diet 1 plus 10.7 percentage units of NDF from wet corn gluten feed, and 4) 8.6 percentage units of NDF from alfalfa silage plus 8.9 percentage units of NDF from coarsely chopped alfalfa hay and 10.7 percentage units of NDF from wet corn gluten feed. The calculated effective NDF factor for wet corn gluten feed, using change in milk fat concentration per unit change in NDF, was 0.74 compared with an assumed 1.0 for alfalfa silage. Rumination activity was measured to calculate a physically effective NDF factor for wet corn gluten feed, which was only 0.11 compared with 1.0 for alfalfa silage. Physically effective NDF also was determined for wet corn gluten feed by wet sieving; 22% of the particles were retained on the 3.35-mm screen or greater. Ruminal mat consistency increased and passage rate of wet corn gluten feed decreased with added hay. The inclusion of chopped alfalfa hay to a diet containing wet corn gluten feed increased ruminal mat consistency, rumination activity, and slowed passage rate, resulting in greater ruminal digestion of NDF from wet corn gluten feed. Depending on the response variable, the effectiveness of NDF from wet corn gluten feed varied from 0.11 to 0.74.  相似文献

Four multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation were fed 60:40 forage:grain (dry basis) diets containing first-cutting alfalfa harvested at the early bud or early flower stage of maturity. Each of the two maturities was preserved as silage and hay. A 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment (28-d periods) was conducted to measure the impact of alfalfa maturity and method of preservation on milk production and composition, intake, digestion, digesta passage, and particle size of digesta. Milk production and composition were not affected by treatment. Increases in fiber intake resulted from increased maturity and preservation as hay, but this did not appear to limit DMI or milk production. Both increased maturity and preservation as hay resulted in the following effects in cows: more time spent ruminating, greater total chewing time, greater wet and dry rumen fill, and a greater volume of rumen contents. Rumen retention time of La applied to forage was 6 h less, and 0-h disappearance of DM from dacron bags was greater for silage than hay. In situ DM disappearance rates averaged 15%/h for silage and 9.5%/h for hay. Lag time was related inversely to 0-h disappearance. Masticates and mixed rumen samples from cows fed hay showed a greater percentage of DM as particles greater than or equal to 9.5 mm in length. Gross feed efficiency was greater for cows fed alfalfa silage than for those fed alfalfa hay, probably because of more rapid digestion and passage. The potential for rumen fill to limit intake in high producing cows appears to be greater for alfalfa preserved as hay than that preserved as silage.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the feeding value of forage soybean silage (SS) for dairy cows relative to a fourth-cut alfalfa silage (AS). Forage soybean was harvested at full pod stage. Two isonitrogenous diets were formulated with a 48:52 forage:concentrate ratio. Soybean silage and AS constituted 72% of the forage in each diet, with corn silage constituting the remaining 28%. Twenty Holsteins cows in early lactation were used in a switchback design. Four lactating Holsteins cows fitted with ruminal cannulas were used to determine the effects of dietary treatments on ruminal fermentation parameters and in vivo total tract nutrient utilization. Relative to AS, SS contained 15, 28, and 25% more neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and crude protein, respectively. Dry matter intake (23.5 vs. 25.1 kg/d) and milk yield (35.5 vs. 37.2 kg/d) were lower for cows fed SS than for those fed AS. However, energy-corrected milk and milk efficiency were similar for both dietary treatments. Milk protein, lactose, and total solids concentrations were not influenced by dietary treatments (average 3.0, 4.7, and 12.6%, respectively). However, cows fed SS produced milk with greater milk fat (3.8 vs. 3.6%) and milk urea nitrogen concentrations (15.6 vs. 14.3 mg/dL) compared with cows fed AS. Ruminal pH was lower, whereas ruminal NH3-N concentration was greater in cows fed SS than in cows fed AS. Total tract digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber were not influenced by silage type. We concluded that forage SS, when compared with AS, had a negative impact on feed intake and milk yield, whereas energy-corrected milk, milk efficiency, and total tract nutrient digestion were similar.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that increasing carbohydrate fermentation in the large intestine would increase intestinal conversion of blood urea N to microbial protein, thereby reducing urinary N output. In experiment 1, 3 multiparous Holstein cows were used in an incomplete 4 × 4 Latin square with 14-d periods. Cows were fed the same basal diet and treatments were the abomasal infusion of 0, 0.5, or 1 kg/d of citrus pectin, or the addition of 1 kg/d of molasses to the basal diet. Experiment 2 used 6 cows in a double reversal design with four 21-d periods. Cows were fed one basal diet and treatments were the abomasal infusion of either 0 or 1 kg/d of pectin. In experiment 1, pectin infusion linearly decreased basal ration intake from 25.0 to 23.2 kg/d. This was prevented in experiment 2 by restricted feeding, and basal ration intake was 22.2 kg/d. Abomasal pectin caused numeric decreases in total tract apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber and neutral detergent solubles in experiment 1 and significantly decreased starch digestibility in experiment 2, suggesting that pectin may have reduced postruminal nutrient digestibility. Pectin infusion did not affect milk yield but decreased milk fat percentage from 3.69 to 3.53% in experiment 2. Increasing abomasal pectin tended to decrease urinary N and increase fecal N in experiment 1 and these effects were significant in experiment 2. For both experiments, urinary N decreased 26 g/d, approximately 10% of daily urine N output. Abomasal pectin did not affect fecal pH or DM content; however, in experiment 2, pectin decreased fecal ammonia from 19.8 to 13.4 mmol/kg of DM and increased fecal purines from 13.8 to 15.8 mmol/kg of DM. In both experiments, excretion of fecal purines was increased from 15 g/d for 0 kg/d pectin to 18 g/d for 1 kg/d pectin, although this increase was only significant in experiment 2. These results suggest that manipulating dairy diets to increase postruminal fermentation may reduce urinary N and consequently manure ammonia losses. However, abomasal pectin tended to decrease both ruminal ammonia concentration and urinary purine derivative output in experiment 2, suggesting that postruminal pectin fermentation may have compromised rumen microbial protein production.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether the amount of forage in a total mixed ration influences feed sorting by cows and whether the extent of this sorting changes as they adapt to a new diet. Six lactating Holstein cows, individually fed once per day, were provided each of 2 diets in a crossover design (dry matter basis): 1) a higher forage diet (HF; 62.3% forage), and 2) a lower forage diet (LF; 50.7% forage). Dry matter intake, feeding behavior, and sorting activity were monitored for each cow on each diet for 7 d. Fresh feed and orts were sampled daily for each cow and subjected to neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and particle size analysis. The particle size separator contained 2 screens (18 and 9 mm) and a bottom pan, resulting in 3 fractions (long, medium, and short). Sorting activity [for each fraction, NDF and physically effective NDF (peNDF)] was calculated as the actual intake expressed as a percentage of the predicted intake. Overall, sorting activity was greatest on the LF diet, with cows sorting for short particles but against long particles, medium particles, NDF, and peNDF. On the HF diet, cows sorted against long particles, NDF, and peNDF and sorted for short particles. Treatment × day interactions occurred for sorting for short particles and against peNDF, indicating that it took cows 1 d to adjust their sorting behavior to the LF diet. Cows on the LF diet consumed more dry matter but spent less time feeding, which resulted in a greater intake rate compared with cows on the HF diet. These results indicate that cows rapidly adjust their sorting behavior when subjected to a dietary change, and they exhibit more sorting for short particles and against long particles, NDF, and peNDF when fed an LF diet.  相似文献

The effect of dietary fiber on endogenous N secretion was studied using a 15N isotope dilution technique in four fistulated Holstein cows. Two isonitrogenous diets differing only in fiber (NDF and ADF) content were used in a crossover design. One diet (HF) contained 37.4% NDF, while the other (LF) contained 23.3%. A new model was developed to estimate endogenous N secretions and losses for the preintestinal, intestinal, and the total sections of the gastrointestinal tract. Three precursor pools: TCA-soluble fraction of plasma, intestinal mucosa, and milk were compared. Although endogenous losses estimated with the model were numerically different for each precursor pool selected (TCA-soluble fraction > mucosa > milk), treatment effects were similar. As intestinal mucosa is probably closest to the precursor pool, these data are discussed. Non-urea N endogenous secretions contributed 13% of the duodenal N flow but were not affected by the fiber content of the diet. The nonurea N endogenous flow at the duodenum was comprised of approximately equal inputs from endogenous N direct, and that incorporated into the microbial biomass. Total endogenous N flows at the duodenum exceeded, by nearly twofold, estimated inputs of urea-N to microbial biomass. Metabolic fecal output averaged 17% of fecal N and was not affected by level of dietary fiber, but net losses from secretions occurring in the small intestine were higher with the low fiber diet. Overall, endogenous N secretions represented 30% of total digestive tract protein synthesis.  相似文献

Renewed interest exists in using grass forages to dilute the higher crude protein (CP) and lower digestible fiber present in legumes fed to lactating dairy cows. A 3 x 3 Latin square feeding study with 4-wk periods was conducted with 24 Holstein cows to compare ryegrass silage, either untreated control or macerated (intensively conditioned) before ensiling, with alfalfa silage as the sole dietary forage. Ryegrass silages averaged [dry matter (DM) basis] 18.4% CP, 50% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 10% indigestible acid detergent fiber (ADF) (control) and 16.6% CP, 51% NDF, and 12% indigestible ADF (macerated). Alfalfa silage was higher in CP (21.6%) and lower in NDF (44%) but higher in indigestible ADF (26%). A lower proportion of the total N in macerated ryegrass silage was present as nonprotein N than in control ryegrass and alfalfa silages. Diets were formulated to contain 41% DM from either rye-grass silage, or 51% DM from alfalfa silage, plus high moisture corn, and protein concentrates. Diets averaged 17.5% CP and 28 to 29% NDF. The shortfall in CP on ryegrass was made up by feeding 7.6% more soybean meal. Intake and milk yields were similar on control and macerated ryegrass; however, DM intake was 8.3 kg/d greater on the alfalfa diet. Moreover, feeding the alfalfa diet increased BW gain (0.48 kg/d) and yield of milk (6.1 kg/d), FCM (6.8 kg/d), fat (0.26 kg/d), protein (0.25 kg/d), lactose (0.35 kg/d), and SNF (0.65 kg/d) versus the mean of the two ryegrass diets. Both DM efficiency (milk/DM intake) and N efficiency (milk-N/N-intake) were 27% greater, and apparent digestibility was 16% greater for DM and 53% greater for NDF and ADF, on the ryegrass diets. However, apparent digestibility of digestible ADF was greater on alfalfa (96%) than on ryegrass (average = 91%). Also, dietary energy content (estimated as net energy of lactation required for maintenance, milk yield, and weight gain) per unit of digested DM was similar for all three diets. Results of this trial indicated that, relative to ryegrass silage, feeding alfalfa silage stimulated much greater feed intake, which supported greater milk production.  相似文献

This study investigated the usefulness of acid-detergent fiber-bound 15N [acid detergent insoluble (ADI)-15N] as a solid digesta passage marker in dairy cows compared with chromium (Cr) and ytterbium (Yb) (as labeled fiber or forage, respectively). Intrinsically (ADI-15N) or extrinsically (Cr, Yb) labeled alfalfa hay was pulse-dosed intraruminally to 7 lactating dairy cows. Following marker administration, spot fecal samples were collected for up to 72 h for marker analyses. Urine and milk samples were also collected and analyzed for Yb and Cr. Fecal marker excretion data were processed using 2-compartment mathematical age-dependent/age-independent (Gn→G1) models. The rate of passage of the marker in the first, age-dependent compartment tended to be slower for Yb compared with Cr and ADI-15N, which resulted in a trend for longer mean retention time (MRT) in this compartment when Yb was used as a marker (19.0 h) compared with Cr and ADI-15N (14.5 and 13.9 h, respectively). The rate constant of marker disappearance for the second or age-independent compartment tended to be greater for Yb compared with Cr and ADI-15N, which led to a shorter MRT of Yb in this compartment (15.6) versus ADI-15N (32.1) and Cr (24.8 h). The cumulative MRT was greater for ADI-15N versus Cr and Yb (46.0, 39.3, and 34.4 h, respectively). Total MRT of marker tended to be greater for ADI-15N than for Yb (46.6 vs. 36.6 h, respectively). Urine and milk analyses data suggested no measurable losses of Yb along the digestive tract, but about 0.79% of Cr dosed intraruminally was secreted or excreted in milk and urine in the 48-h period following marker administration. Collectively, this study confirmed previous observations that ADI-15N can be used reliably as a solid digesta passage marker for ruminants, producing pre-duodenal and total-tract retention times similar to that of Cr-labeled fiber. Retention time in the age-independent compartment was underestimated when Yb was used as a marker, emphasizing the need to process forages to isolate fiber before labeling with Yb.  相似文献

Effects of forage particle size and sodium bicarbonate on milk production, ruminal fermentation, ruminal fluid dilution rate, dry matter passage from the rumen, and nutrient digestion were measured in four Holstein cows in a 4 X 4 Latin-square experiment. Cows were fed ad libitum amounts of a diet of approximately 46% concentrate and 54% alfalfa hay. The 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments were: 1) long stem alfalfa hay, 2) long stem alfalfa hay + 1.4% sodium bicarbonate (3.0% of concentrate), 3) chopped alfalfa hay (1.3 cm), and 4) chopped alfalfa hay + 1.4% sodium bicarbonate. Feed intake, milk yield, and milk composition were similar among treatments. Ruminal pH and concentration and molar percentages of volatile fatty acids were not altered. Decreasing feed particle size reduced ruminal fluid outflow as estimated by polyethylene glycol and chromium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid dilution rates. Digestion of nutrients was decreased with chopped alfalfa hay but was not related to faster rate of passage of smaller size feed particles as determined by rare earth markers. Sodium bicarbonate increased water intake and tended to improve nutrient digestion. Absence of a significant effect of sodium bicarbonate upon rate of passage of chopped hay indicates that feed particles of this size are not significantly affected by small increases of dilution rate of ruminal fluid. Addition of sodium bicarbonate to an alfalfa hay (forage)-based diet did not improve production responses but did increase nutrient digestion.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to determine dietary factors influencing the apparent digestibility of Mg by lactating dairy cows and to compare empirical apparent digestibility values with Mg absorption coefficients used in the dairy cattle nutrient requirement model of the National Research Council (NRC). Data were compiled from 8 experiments with 39 dietary treatments and 162 cows (all lactating Holsteins) in which apparent digestibility of Mg was measured using total collection of feces and urine. The concentration of dietary Mg ranged from 0.20 to 0.36% of DM (mean = 0.27%). On average, 19% of the dietary Mg came from a Mg supplement (MgO or MgSO4). The concentration of dietary K ranged from 1.07 to 2.65% (mean = 1.60%). The mean apparent digestibility of Mg was 0.18 and ranged from -0.04 to 0.33. The average digestibility was 30% lower than the mean value calculated by the NRC model. The primary reason for the low average Mg digestibility was high concentrations of dietary K. At a dietary K concentration of 1%, empirical data agreed with NRC estimates, but apparent Mg digestibility decreased 0.075 (+/- 0.035)/percentage unit of K in the diet. Effects of forage family on dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, ruminal pool sizes, digestion and passage kinetics, and chewing activity and the relationship of these effects with preliminary DMI (pDMI), an index of nutrient demand, were evaluated using 13 ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows in a crossover design with a 14-d preliminary period and two 18-d treatment periods. During the preliminary period, pDMI of individual cows ranged from 19.6 to 29.5 kg/d (mean=25.9 kg/d) and 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield ranged from 24.3 to 60.3 kg/d (mean=42.1 kg/d). Experimental treatments were diets containing either a) alfalfa silage (AL) or b) orchardgrass silage (OG) as the sole forage. Alfalfa and orchardgrass contained 42.3 and 58.2% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 22.5 and 11.4% crude protein, respectively. Forage:concentrate ratios were 60:40 and 43:57 for AL and OG, respectively; both diets contained approximately 25% forage NDF and 30% total NDF. Preliminary DMI was determined during the last 4 d of the preliminary period when cows were fed a common diet and used as a covariate. Main effects of forage family and their interaction with pDMI were tested by ANOVA. Forage family and its interaction with pDMI did not affect feed intake, milk yield, or milk composition. The AL diet increased indigestible NDF (iNDF) intake and decreased potentially digestible NDF (pdNDF) intake compared with OG. The AL diet increased ruminal pH, digestion rates of pdNDF and starch, and passage rates of pdNDF and iNDF compared with OG, which affected ruminal digestibility. Passage rate of iNDF was related to pDMI; AL increased iNDF passage rate and OG decreased it as pDMI increased. The AL diet decreased ruminal pool sizes of pdNDF, starch, organic matter, dry matter, and rumen digesta wet weight and volume compared with OG. The AL diet decreased ruminating time per unit of forage NDF consumed compared with OG, indicating that alfalfa provided less physically effective fiber than orchardgrass. The AL diet, but not OG, increased ammonia N, nonammonia nonmicrobial N, and nonammonia N fluxes as pDMI increased. Efficiency of microbial protein synthesis was positively related to pdNDF passage rate for OG, but not AL. The faster rates of digestion and passage for AL compared with OG decreased rumen pool size but did not increase feed intake for cows consuming AL. Digestion responses to forage family were affected by nutrient demand of cows.  相似文献

The accuracy of prediction of microbial growth in the rumen and flow of microbial protein to the small intestine is important in predicting protein and carbohydrate utilization in dairy cattle as well as the development of a protein and carbohydrate feeding system that will be an improvement over present systems. Empirical multiple and simple regression equations are presented that demonstrate the impact of body size, proportion of forage in the diet, and dry matter intake on flow of microbial protein into the small intestine from the rumen. Concepts are developed and validated for a mechanistic, dynamic approach for prediction of microbial growth and flow of microbial protein based on Michaelis-Menton equations, microbial substance affinities, and rumen liquid flow kinetics. Emphasis is placed on the importance of quantifying dynamics of rumen function, the need for experimentation to develop a carbohydrate system that will include methods for analysis, and a factorial approach to digestion and utilization.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of corn particle size (CPS) on site and extent of starch digestion in lactating dairy cows. Animals were fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas. Dry corn grain accounted for 36% of dry matter intake. In experiment 1, 6 cows were used in a duplicate 3 x 3 Latin square design. Semiflint corn was used. Corn processing methods were grinding, medium rolling, and coarse rolling. The mean particle size of the processed corn was 730, 1807, and 3668 microm, respectively. Rumen digestibility of starch linearly decreased from 59% with ground corn to 36% with coarsely rolled corn. Similarly, small intestine digestibility linearly decreased with increased CPS, and consequently, the amount of starch digested in the small intestine was not affected by corn processing. In experiment 2, 4 cows were used in a 2 x 2 crossover design. Dent corn was used. Corn processing methods were grinding and coarse rolling. The mean particle size of the processed corn was 568 and 3458 microm, respectively. Rumen digestibility of starch decreased from 70% with ground corn to 54% with coarsely rolled corn. Small intestine digestibility of starch was not significantly affected by CPS, and the amount of starch digested in the small intestine tended to be greater for rolled than for ground corn. In both experiments, starch total tract digestibility decreased with increased CPS. In conclusion, CPS is an efficient tool to manipulate rumen degradability of cornstarch. In midlactation cows, the decrease in the amount of starch digested in the rumen between grinding and coarse rolling is partly compensated for by an increase in the amount of starch digested in the small intestine with dent genotype, but with semiflint genotype postruminal digestion is not increased and rumen escape starch is not utilized by the animal.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of phosphorus (P) availability from feed are needed to allow P requirements to be met with reduced P intake, thus reducing P excretion by livestock. Exogenous phytase supplementation in poultry and swine diets improves bioavailability of P, and limited research suggests that this strategy may have some application in dairy cattle rations. The effects of exogenous phytase and forage particle length on site and extent of P digestion were evaluated with 5 ruminally and ileally cannulated lactating cows (188 ± 35 d in milk). Cows were assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments in 2 incomplete Latin squares with four 21-d periods. Diets contained P slightly in excess of National Research Council requirements with all P from feed sources. During the last 4 d of each period, total mixed ration, refusals, omasal, ileal, and fecal samples were collected and analyzed for total P, inorganic P (Pi), and phytate (Pp). Total P intake was not influenced by dietary treatments but Pp intake decreased and Pi intake increased with supplemental phytase, suggesting rapid action of the enzyme in the total mixed ration after mixing. Omasal flow of Pi decreased with phytase supplementation, but we observed no effect of diet in ileal flow or small intestinal digestibility of any P fraction. Fecal excretion of total P was slightly higher and Pp excretion was lower for cows receiving diets supplemented with phytase. Milk yield and composition were unaffected by diets. When phytase was added to the mixed ration, dietary Pp was rapidly degraded before intake and total-tract Pp digestion was increased. The lack of effect of phytase supplementation on dietary P utilization was probably because these late-lactation cows had a low P requirement and were fed P-adequate diets.  相似文献
