Partially converted crab shell waste, which contains chitosan, was used to remove nickel from water. The chelating ability of chitosan makes it an excellent adsorbent for removing pollutants. Advantages of chitosan in crab shells include availability, low cost, and high biocompatibility. The metal uptake by partially converted crab shell waste was successful and rapid. The sorption occurred primarily within 5 min. The sorption mechanism appears to be quite complicated and cannot be adequately described by either the Langmuir or Freundlich theories. Various anions, including chloride, bromide, fluoride, acetate, sulfate, nitrate, and phosphate, were found to have a very small effect on the capacity of the crab shells for uptake of nickel. The effect of pH was also found not to be prominent.  相似文献

Adsorption of chromium from aqueous solutions by maple sawdust   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
This paper presents the data for the effect of adsorbent dose, initial sorbate concentration, contact time, and pH on the adsorption of chromium(VI) on maple sawdust. Batch adsorption studies have been carried out. An empirical relationship has been obtained to predict the percentage chromium(VI) removal at any time for known values of sorbent and initial sorbate concentration. Under observed test conditions, the equilibrium adsorption data fits the linear Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The experimental result inferred that chelation ion exchange is one of the major adsorption mechanisms for binding metal ions to the maple sawdust.  相似文献

Removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions using modified red pine sawdust   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions on sawdust (SD), base extracted sawdust (BESD) and tartaric acid modified sawdust (TASD) of Turkish red pine tree (Pinus nigra), a timber industry waste, was studied at varying Cr(VI) concentrations, adsorbent dose, modifier concentration and pH. Batch adsorption studies have been carried out. Sawdust was collected from waste timber industry and modified with various amount of tartaric acid (TA) (0.1-1.5M). The batch sorption kinetics has been tested and the applicability of the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms for the present system has been tested at 25+/-2 degrees C. Under observed test conditions, the equilibrium adsorption data fits the linear Freundlich isotherms. An initial pH of 3.0 was most favorable for Cr(VI) removal by all adsorbents. Maximum Cr(VI) was sequestered from the solution within 120 min after the beginning for every experiment. The experimental result inferred that chelation and ion exchange is one of the major adsorption mechanisms for binding metal ions to the SD. Percentage removal of Cr(VI) was maximum at the initial pH of 3.0 (87.7, 70.6 and 55.2% by TASD, BESD, and SD, respectively). Adsorption capacities range from 8.3 to 22.6 mg/g for SD samples.  相似文献

In this work, adsorption of Cu(II) ions on sawdust (SD) and activated sawdust (ASD) has been studied by using batch adsorption techniques. The equilibrium adsorption level was determined to be a function of the pH, initial Cu(II) concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The equilibrium nature of Cu(II) adsorption has been described by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir adsorption model both sawdust and activated sawdust. The equilibrium capacity of sawdust and activated sawdust were 5.432 and 13.495 mg copper per g adsorbent, respectively at room temperature and natural pH. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at the maximum zeta potential value that -74.5 mV (pH 5) for activated sawdust and at -48.4 mV (pH 4) for sawdust. It was observed that activated sawdust was a suitable adsorbent than sawdust for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Removal of cadmium from aqueous solutions by palygorskite   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The sorption characteristics of palygorskite with respect to cadmium were studied with the aim of assessing its use in water purification systems. Using a batch method the influence of time (0.5-48 h), initial Cd concentration (5-150 mg/l or 0.044-1.34 mmol/l), ionic strength ([Ca(II)]: 0-0.1 mol/l), pH (3-7) and mineral dose (1-20 g/l) on Cd removal was evaluated. The sorption of Cd on palygorskite appeared as a fast process, with equilibrium being attained within the first half an hour of interaction. This process could be described by the Langmuir model and gave a maximum Cd sorption of 4.54 mg/g. This sorption capacity value was greatly affected by both pH and ionic strength. Thus, Cd sorption decreased as initial pH lessened, especially at proton concentrations similar to those of Cd, at which competition for variable charge sites (silanol groups on palygorskite surface) appeared to be important. High competing electrolyte concentrations also decreased significantly (close to 60%) the amount of sorbed Cd, suggesting a great contribution of replacement of exchange cations in this metal removal by palygorskite. The increase of mineral dose provoked a Cd removal raise; removal values in the range 85-45% were attained for Cd initial concentrations of 10-150 mg/l (0.089-1.34 mmol/l) when a palygorskite dose of 20 g/l was employed. Column studies were also performed in order to estimate the potential of palygorskite to be used in continuous flow purification systems, showing the effectiveness of this mineral to purify down to the legal limit of waste moderate volumes of Cd-containing solutions with a similar concentration (50mg/l or 0.445 mmol/l) to those mostly found in the upper range of concentrations usually present in industrial wastewaters.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to investigate the feasibility of the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution by electro-coagulation (EC). The current density (CD) between 2.5 and 10 mA cm(-2) and duration in the limits of 5-20 min were tried for different concentrations. In order to determine optimal operating conditions, the EC process used for the phosphate removal was examined in dependence with the CD, initial concentrations and time. The results of the experimental batch processing showed high effectiveness of the EC method in removing phosphate from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Removal of lead from aqueous solutions by activated phosphate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The potential of using activated phosphate as a new adsorbent for the removal of Pb from aqueous solutions was investigated. The kinetic of lead adsorption and the adsorption process were compared for natural phosphate (NP) and activated phosphate (AP). The results indicate that equilibrium was established in about 1h for NP and 3 h for AP. The effect of the pH was examined in the range 2-6. The maximum removal obtained is between two and three for NP and between three and four for AP. The maximum adsorption capacities at 25 degrees C are 155.04 and 115.34 mg/g for AP and NP, respectively. The effect of temperature has been carried out at 25, 35 and 45 degrees C. The data obtained from adsorption isotherms of lead at different temperatures fit to linear form of Langmuir adsorption equation. The thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy (DeltaH), free energy (DeltaG) and entropy (DeltaS) were calculated. They show that adsorption of lead on NP and AP is an endothermic process more effective at high temperatures. These results show that AP is a good adsorbent for heavy metals from aqueous solutions and could be used as a purifier for water and wastewater.  相似文献

The biosorption of the toxic metal (nickel) from aqueous solutions on dried vegetative cell and spore-crystal mixture of Bacillus thuringiensis var. thuringiensis was tested under laboratory conditions as a function of pH, initial metal ion concentration and temperature. The characteristics of the adsorption process were investigated using Scatchard analysis. Scatchard analysis of the equilibrium binding data for metal ions on vegetative cell and spore-crystal mixture of B. thuringiensis gave rise to a linear plot, indicating that the Langmuir model could be applied successfully. Adsorption behaviour of nickel(II) ion on B. thuringiensis is expressed by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption data with respect to the metal provided an excellent fit to both isotherms. Ni(II) ion uptake of B. thuringiensis's spore-crystal mixture at 250 mg l(-1) was 15.7%, whereas its vegetative cell metal uptake was 10%. The best temperature for ion uptake was found to be at 35 degrees C.  相似文献

Organophilic-bentonite, produced by exchange of cetyltrimethylammonium cation for metal cations on the bentonite, was exploited as adsorbent for removal of catechol from aqueous solutions using batch technique. The dependence of removal on various physico-chemical parameters, such as contact time (1–250 min), concentration (0.8–15.3 mmol L−1), temperature (30, 40, 50 ± 1 °C) and pH (5–12) of the adsorptive solution were investigated. Obtained results show that catechol could be removed efficiently (100%) at pH values ≥9.9. The uptake process follows first-order rate kinetics and the equilibrium data fit well into the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms over a wide range of concentration (1–10 mmol L−1). The magnitude of change of free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) were determined.  相似文献

This study deals with the removal of chromium species from aqueous dilute solutions using polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) process. Three water soluble polymers, namely chitosan, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and pectin were selected for this study. The ultrafiltration studies were carried out using a laboratory scale ultrafiltration system equipped with 500,000 MWCO polysulfone hollow fiber membrane. The effects of pH and polymer composition on rejection coefficient and permeate flux at constant pressure have been investigated. For Cr(III), high rejections approaching 100% were obtained at pH higher than 7 for the three tested polymers. With chitosan and pectin, Cr(VI) retention showed a slight increase with solution pH and did not exceed a value of 50%. An interesting result was obtained with PEI. The retention of Cr(VI) approached 100% at low pH and decreased when the pH was increased. This behavior is opposite to what one can expect in the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration of heavy metals. Furthermore, the concentration of polymer was found to have little effect on rejection. Permeate flux remained almost constant around 25% of pure water flux.  相似文献

The present study deals with the extraction of phenols from aqueous solutions by using the emulsion liquid membranes technique. Besides phenol, two derivatives of phenol, i.e., tyrosol (2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol) and p-coumaric acid (4-hydroxycinnamic acid), which are typical components of the effluents produced in olive oil plants, were selected as the target solutes. The effect of the composition of the organic phase on the removal of solutes was examined. The influence of pH of feed phase on the extraction of tyrosol and p-coumaric was tested for the membrane with Cyanex 923 as an extractant. The use of 2% Cyanex 923 allowed obtaining a very high extraction of phenols (97-99%) in 5-6 min of contact time for either single solute solutions or for their mixtures. The removal efficiency of phenol and p-coumaric acid attained equivalent values by using the system with 2% isodecanol, but the removal rate of tyrosol was found greatly reduced. The extraction of tyrosol and p-coumaric acid from their binary mixture was also analysed for different operating conditions like the volume ratio of feed phase to stripping phase (sodium hydroxide), the temperature and the initial concentration of solute in the feed phase.  相似文献

Removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions by hazelnut shell   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There is a great potential of woody hazelnut shell to use in some applications. Sorption studies are one of these. For this reason in this paper, batch adsorption of Cu(2+) ions onto hazelnut shells was studied. The capacity of the adsorption for the removal of copper ions from aqueous solution was investigated under different conditions such as solution contact time (1-360 min), particle size (0-75, 75-150 and 150-200 microm), temperature of solution (25-60 degrees ) and solution pH (3-7). Moreover, zeta potential of particles at different initial pHs (2-10) was measured. The equilibrium data were processed according to Langmuir and Freundlich's models and higher adsorption capacity values towards Cu(2+) ions were shown. The adsorption kinetics was investigated and the best fit was achieved by a second-order equation.  相似文献

Propylthiol functionalized SBA-15 silica was investigated to detoxify aqueous solutions contaminated with the regulated mycotoxin patulin. Micelle templated silicas with a specific pore size were synthetically modified to possess propylthiol groups, a functional group known to form Michael reaction products with the conjugated double bond system of patulin. BET surface area analysis indicated the propylthiol functionalized SBA-15 possesses channels with the pore size of 5.4 nm and a surface area of 345 m(2)g(-1). Elemental analysis indicates the silicon/sulfur ratio to be 10:1, inferring one propylthiol substituent for every ten silica residues. The propylthiol modified SBA-15 was effective at significantly reducing high levels of patulin from aqueous solutions (pH 7.0) in batch sorption assays at room temperature. The material was less effective at lower pH; however heating low pH solutions and apple juice to 60 °C in the presence of propylthiol functionalized SBA-15 significantly reduced the levels of patulin in contaminated samples. Composite molecular models developed by semi-empirical PM3 and empirical force field methods support patulin permeation through the mesoporous channels of propylthiol functionalized SBA-15. Density functional study at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level predicts the proposed patulin adducts formed by reaction with the thiol residues exhibit less electrophilic properties than patulin. It is demonstrated the use of propylthiol functionalized SBA-15 is a viable approach to reduce patulin levels in aqueous solutions, including contaminated apple juice.  相似文献

Removal of cadmium from aqueous solutions by adsorption onto orange waste   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The use of orange wastes, generated in the orange juice industry, for removing cadmium from aqueous solutions has been investigated. The material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and batch experiments were conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of the biomass. A strong dependence of the adsorption capacity on pH was observed, the capacity increasing as pH value rose. Kinetics and adsorption equilibrium were studied at different pH values (4-6). The adsorption process was quick and the equilibrium was attained within 3h. The maximum adsorption capacity of orange waste was found to be 0.40, 0.41 and 0.43 mmol/g at pH 4-6, respectively. The kinetic data were analysed using various kinetic models - pseudo-first order equation, pseudo-second order equation, Elovich equation and intraparticle diffusion equation - and the equilibrium data were tested using four isotherm models - Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson. The data were fitted by non-linear regression and five error analysis methods were used to evaluate the goodness of the fit. The Elovich equation provides the greatest accuracy for the kinetic data and the Sips model the closest fit for the equilibrium data.  相似文献

Fixation of heavy metal ions (Cd(II) and Pb(II)) onto sawdust of Pinus sylvestris is presented in this paper. Batch experiments were conducted to study the main parameters such as adsorbent concentration, initial adsorbate concentration, contact time, kinetic, pH solution, and stirring velocity on the sorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by sawdust of P. sylvestris. Kinetic aspects are studied in order to develop a model which can describe the process of adsorption on sawdust. The equilibrium of a solution between liquid and solid phases is described by Langmuir model. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the process is controlled by a porous diffusion with ion-exchange. The capacity of the metal ions to bind onto the biomass was 96% for Cd(II), and 98% for Pb(II). The sorption followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption of these heavy metals ions increased with the pH and reached a maximum at a 5.5 value. From these results, it can be concluded that the sawdust of P. sylvestris could be a good adsorbent for the metal ions coming from aqueous solutions. Moreover, this material could also be used for purification of water before rejection into the natural environment.  相似文献

A new sorbent (raw rice bran) was investigated for heavy metal ions removal from aqueous solutions. Rice bran characterisation was carried out in order to identify the functional groups possibly involved in the metal binding. The binding process was studied in terms of binding capacity and metal affinity. The adsorption equilibrium was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The negative Gibbs free energy values obtained in this study with rice bran confirm the feasibility of the process and the spontaneous nature of sorption.  相似文献

Removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions by kaolinite and batch design   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions by kaolinite was investigated by using a batch-type method. Effects of factors such as pH, ionic strength, temperature, acid-activation and calcination on copper adsorption were investigated. The uptake of copper was determined from changes in concentration as measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. The extent of copper adsorption increased with increasing pH and temperature and with decreasing ionic strength, acid-activation and calcination temperature. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were used to determine the isotherm parameters associated with the adsorption process. The results provide support for the adsorption of copper ions onto kaolinite. Thermodynamic parameters indicated the endothermic nature of copper adsorption on kaolinite. The experimental results were applied a batch design. As a result, the kaolinite may be used for removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Removal of ammonium from aqueous solutions with volcanic tuff   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents kinetic and equilibrium data concerning ammonium ion uptake from aqueous solutions using Romanian volcanic tuff. The influence of contact time, pH, ammonium concentration, presence of other cations and anion species is discussed. Equilibrium isotherms adequately fit the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results showed a contact time of 3h to be sufficient to reach equilibrium and pH of 7 to be the optimum value. Adsorption capacities of 19 mg NH(4)(+)/g were obtained in multicomponent solutions (containing NH(4)(+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Ca(2+), Na(2+)). The presence of Zn and Cd at low concentrations did not decrease the ammonium adsorption capacity. Comparison of Romanian volcanic tuff with synthetic zeolites used for ammonium removal (5A, 13X and ZSM-5) was carried out. The removal efficiciency of ammonium by volcanic tuff were similar to those of zeolites 5A and 13X at low initial ammonium concentration, and much higher than those of zeolite ZSM-5.  相似文献

Sawdust, SD, was reacted with Sandene 850 (polyamine) in alkaline medium to yield cationized sawdust. The latter was characterized through its Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectra and nitrogen content. Thus, obtained cationized sawdust was harnessed for removal of Direct Red 23 from aqueous solutions. Adsorption studies were performed under different agitation time, adsorbent and adsorbate concentrations and the onset of this on the adsorption capacity of Direct Red 23 onto cationized sawdust. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied in the adsorption studies. The study showed that the cationized sawdust is effectively used in adsorption of Direct Red 23 from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The present study proposed the use of meranti sawdust in the removal of Cu(II), Cr(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from synthetic aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption studies showed that meranti sawdust was able to adsorb Cu(II), Cr(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions in the concentration range 1–200 mg/L. The adsorption was favoured with maximum adsorption at pH 6, whereas the adsorption starts at pH 1 for all metal ions. The effects of contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, adsorbent dosage and temperature have been reported. The applicability of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) isotherm was tried for the system to completely understand the adsorption isotherm processes. The adsorption kinetics tested with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models yielded high R2 values from 0.850 to 0.932 and from 0.991 to 0.999, respectively. The meranti sawdust was found to be cost effective and has good efficiency to remove these toxic metal ions from aqueous solution.  相似文献
