The first formal immunisation schedule for the delivery of triple (DTP) vaccine was drawn up in November 1960. Since 1960 there have been many changes to the immunisation schedule, with a further change proposed for 1996. Two patients, a man aged 33 years and a woman aged 30, suffered from a varicella zoster induced pneumonia. In adults a varicella zoster infection may be accompanied by a very severe pneumonia. In one patient mechanical ventilation was necessary. A chest X-ray and blood gas analysis must be made in adults suffering from a varicella zoster virus infection who have pulmonary complaints. In case of abnormalities in one of these two examinations the patient must be observed in a clinical setting. The pneumonia can be treated with aciclovir.  相似文献

While a considerable amount is known about young male drivers both in New Zealand and overseas, research attention concerning female drivers of any age including those under the age of 25 has been far less prevalent. The present paper explores the reasons behind the historically low research interest in this population of road users, and seeks to provide information on the current status of young female drivers in New Zealand, with regard to both travel patterns and crash involvement statistics. The findings of the present study suggest that the exposure to risk of this group has increased with greater licensing and kilometreage. Increased crash involvement was identified for this group, a finding accentuated by the fact that this has occurred concurrent with a decrease in crash involvement of young male drivers. Drink driving patterns of this group are discussed, in response to the finding that the crash involvement and number of drink-drive convictions of females 15-24 have increased over time. Implications for research and countermeasures are outlined.  相似文献

Susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus has been unequivocally established to be an inherited trait, but the exact genes and how they confer susceptibility remain largely unknown. In this study of (NZB x NZW)F2 intercross mice, we used linkage analysis of markers covering > 90% of the autosomal genome and identified eight susceptibility loci (Lbw1 to -8, chromosomes 17, 4-7, 18, 1, 11, respectively) associated with antichromatin autoantibody production, glomerulonephritis, and/or mortality. Only one locus, the major histocompatibility complex, was linked to all three traits. Two other loci were associated with both glomerulonephritis and mortality, whereas the remaining loci were linked to one of the above traits. Two additional loci (Sbw1 and -2) that contributed to splenomegaly were also identified. The Sbw2 locus mapped to the identical region as Lbw2, a locus on chromosome 4 linked to glomerulonephritis and mortality, suggesting a single locus with pleiotropic effects. The results indicate that the immunopathologic features of lupus are affected by distinct, but additive, genetic contributions. Studies to determine the nature of the genes associated with these loci should help define the genetic mechanisms involved in this systemic autoimmune disease.  相似文献

Sixty-three men aged 17 to 48 who had been concussed were asked 90 days later if it had affected them, if they knew of others who had been affected, and if they would take action to prevent further injury. Twenty percent still had symptoms, mostly impairment of intellectual function. Sixty percent expressed concern about the injury, though only 19 percent intended realistic measures to prevent recurrence, such as giving up football or selling their motorcycle. Concern was commoner after sports than road accidents. Sixty percent had friends who had been concussed, and a third of these had given up sport because of the effects. It is concluded that there is considerable awareness, particularly amongst sportsmen, of the effects of concussion, and that sports administrators would find considerable support for rules to reduce the risk of brain damage from repeated concussion.  相似文献

We studied the effects of 6-chloro-2',3'-dideoxyguanosine (6-Cl-ddG), an antiretroviral drug, in surface lymph nodes of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) chronically infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). The rhesus monkeys were treated with 25 mg/kg of 6-Cl-ddG every 8 hr for 2 weeks. We performed sequential biopsies of the surface lymph nodes three times: before, during, and after the drug treatment. The 6-Cl-ddG dramatically decreased the number of infectious virus (measured by limiting dilution assay) in lymph node mononuclear cells. This decrease was consistent with the decrease in the number of viral RNA-positive cells in lymph nodes (analyzed by in situ hybridization). Histopathological analysis revealed that hyperplastic lymphoid follicles were reduced in size, especially, enlarged areas of centroblasts in lymphoid follicles (the so-called dark areas of germinal centers) were declined. Our results demonstrated that 6-Cl-ddG decreased the viral burden concomitantly with reduced hyper-activation of germinal centers in lymphoid follicles of SIV-infected rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

Epidemiology, surveillance and research New Zealand has a high quality surveillance system for meningococcal disease that successfully integrates notification and laboratory data. Since 1991, New Zealand has had elevated incidence rates of meningococcal disease rising to 6.2 per 100,000 population in 1994. This represents a rate that is four times that recorded in 1989/90. Serogroup B infection predominates and international experience suggests that these elevated rates may continue for 5 to 15 years. Rates of meningococcal disease in Maori and Pacific Islands populations were three times higher than in Europeans at 10.0 and 12.3 per 100,000 respectively in 1994. The rates were particularly high for infants with the rate in Maori infants under 1 year reaching 120 per 100,000. The case fatality rate at 5.3% for 1994 would appear to be relatively low by international standards. Case control studies could be used to investigate potentially modifiable primary risk factors for disease. Intensive case review studies to investigate the role of such factors as preadmission antibiotics in reducing severe outcomes may be of benefit. The Ministry of Health or research funding organisations should consider the potential value of such studies in more detail.  相似文献

Cytology screening, used in New Zealand since 1955 at an intensity comparable to that in Canada generally, has not favourably affected incidence and mortality rates for cervical cancer; these have actually risen significantly in 20 to 34-year-old New Zealand women. Canadian claims that mortality falls are related to intensity of cytological screening are not justifiable, so that the significance of the 'pre-cancers' revealed by cytology and the value of population screening would seem to be doubtful.  相似文献

Forearm rotation affects grip strength. In a study with 40 volunteers, an overall decrease in grip strength was observed when the forearm rotated from pronation to supination. In males grip strength in pronation was significantly lower compared to the neutral and supinated position, with the wrist free as well as in an immobilized wrist position. In females this was only observed with a free wrist position, but with the wrist immobilized, the grip strength was higher in supination compared to neutral and pronation.  相似文献

Pasture-grazed dairy cows, deer, and sheep were tested for the presence of ammonia-hyperproducing (HAP) bacteria in roll tubes containing a medium in which tryptone and Casamino Acids were the sole nitrogen and energy sources. Colonies able to grow on this medium represented 5.2, 1.3, and 11.6% of the total bacterial counts of dairy cows, deer, and sheep, respectively. A total of 14 morphologically distinct colonies were purified and studied further. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms of 16S rRNA genes indicated that all isolates differed from the previously described HAP bacteria, Clostridium aminophilum, Clostridium sticklandii, and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. Carbon source utilization experiments showed that five isolates (C2, D1, D4, D5, and S1) were unable to use any, or very few, of the carbon sources tested. Biochemical tests and phylogenetic analyses of 16S ribosomal DNA sequences indicated that all isolates were monensin sensitive; that D1 and S1 belonged to the genus Peptostreptococcus, that D4 and D5 belonged to the family Bacteroidaceae, where D4 was similar to Fusobacterium necrophorum; and that C2 was most similar to an unidentified species from the genus Eubacterium. Growth on liquid medium containing tryptone and Casamino Acids as the sole nitrogen and energy source showed that D1, D4, and S1 grew rapidly (specific growth rates of 0.40, 0.35, and 0.29 h-1, respectively), while C2 and D5 were slow growers (0.25 and 0.10 h-1, respectively). Ammonia production rates were highest in D1 and D4, which produced 945.5 and 748.3 nmol/min per mg of protein, respectively. Tests of individual nitrogen sources indicated that D1 and D4 grew best on tryptone, S1 grew equally well on Casamino Acids or tryptone, and C2 and D5 grew poorly on all nitrogen sources. The intact proteins casein and gelatin did not support significant growth of any of the isolates. These isolates extend the diversity of known HAP rumen bacteria and indicate the presence of significant HAP bacterial populations in pasture-grazed New Zealand ruminants.  相似文献
