In practice, direct current (DC) is used in an electrocoagulation processes. In this case, an impermeable oxide layer may form on the cathode as well as corrosion formation on the anode due to oxidation. This prevents the effective current transfer between the anode and cathode, so the efficiency of electrocoagulation processes declines. These disadvantages of DC have been diminished by adopting alternating current (AC) in electrocoagulation processes. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of AC and DC on the removal of iron from water using zinc as anode and cathode. The results showed that the optimum removal efficiency of 99.6% and 99.1% with the energy consumption of 0.625 and 0.991 kWh kL?1 was achieved at a current density of 0.06 A dm?2, at pH of 7.0 using AC and DC, respectively. For both AC and DC, the adsorption of iron was preferably fitting Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the adsorption process follows second order kinetics and the temperature studies showed that adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous in nature. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

BACKGROUND: When direct current (DC) is used in electrocoagulation processes, an impermeable oxide layer may form on the cathode and corrosion of the anode may occur due to oxidation. This prevents effective current transfer between the anode and cathode, so the efficiency of the electrocoagulation process declines. These disadvantages of DC have been reduced by adopting alternating current (AC). The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of AC and DC on the removal of fluoride from water using an aluminum alloy as anode and cathode. RESULTS: Results showed that removal efficiencies of 93 and 91.5% with energy consumption of 1.883 and 2.541 kWh kL?1 was achieved at a current density of 1.0 A dm?2 and pH 7.0 using an aluminum alloy as electrodes using AC and DC, respectively. For both AC and DC, the adsorption of fluoride fitted the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption process follows second‐order kinetics and temperature studies showed that adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous in nature. CONCLUSIONS: The aluminum hydroxide generated in the cell removed the fluoride present in the water and reduced it to a permissible level thus making it drinkable. It is concluded that an alternating current prevents passivation of the aluminum anode during electrocoagulation and avoids the additional energy wasted due to the resistance of the aluminum oxide film formed on the anode surface. In this study, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of hydroxyapatite (HA) powder on titanium plate was performed using butanol as solvent under direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) fields. The zeta potential of the suspensions was measured to define their stability and the charge on the particles. Coating thickness was varied by adjusting the voltage and time of deposition. Surface morphology and cross section thickness were studied using scanning electron microscopy and image analysis software. Surface crack density was calculated from the micrographs. The results showed that the samples of similar thickness have higher grain density when coated using AC as compared to DC EPD. This facile but novel test proves the capability of AC-EPD to attain denser and uniform HA coatings from non-aqueous medium.  相似文献

采用交、直流交替氧化的方法,改变3005铝合金在硫酸介质中阳极氧化膜的结构与组成,探讨其对膜层电解着色性能的影响。结果表明,交、直流氧化的顺序及相关电解着色参数对电解着色膜性能产生明显的影响。最佳氧化及着色工艺条件为:直流氧化电流密度1~2A/dm2,交流氧化电压15~20V,着色电压5~7V,着色温度20~30℃,着色时间2~7min。由此可获得浅茶色、桃红色、朱红色、紫黑色等一系列具有高装饰性的铝阳极氧化着色膜。  相似文献

In the current study, sorption of methylene blue dye (MB) from aqueous solutions, using sawdust modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS/SD) has been investigated. Sorption experiments were performed using batch and fixed-bed column systems. The effects of important parameters, such as pH, initial dye concentration, flow rate, and bed depth on the sorption of MB dye have been studied. Thomas and the bed-depth service time model (BDST) were applied for analysis of sorption data and estimating of sorption capacity. In order to drive adsorption isotherms, sorption experiments were conducted in batch mode and the treatment of the obtained data were carried out using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Based on the breakthrough analysis obtained from continuous sorption experiments, the highest column capacity of 129.68 mg g?1 was obtained for the SDS/SD adsorbent. The results of this study indicated that surfactant-modified sawdust is much more effective for basic MB dye removal compared to untreated sawdust (SD) and the exhausted SDS/SD column can be easily regenerated using dilute HCl solution with high performance (>95%). The results of this study also indicated the successful applicability of the introduced adsorbent as a very efficient and cost effective adsorbent for the removal of cationic dye molecules from aqueous wastes.  相似文献

A coupling process between Electrocoagulation (EC) and GAC was employed to separate dyes from aqueous solutions. The removal of an indigoid dye, namely C.I. Acid Blue 74, was tested. A novel approach for optimizing EC-based techniques is presented. In addition to maximizing removal efficiency, minimizing consumptions of energy and electrode materials were also targeted by means of multi-objective optimization in order to reduce the specific costs. A very good cost-efficiency feature of EC/GAC coupling process operated under optimal conditions to treat wastewater from dyestuff has been revealed. The independent variables considered were the current density, influent pH, contact time, granular activated carbon dose, and initial dye concentration. Simple maximization of color removal efficiency and multi-objective optimization were compared. Two different constraints were considered for each type of optimization. The determined costs outline the cheapness feature of the EC/GAC system as a potential dye wastewater treatment technology.  相似文献

The investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of using activated carbon (AC) in conjunction with ultrafiltration (UF) in the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The combination of activated carbon with UF in this work was to exploit the high adsorption capabilities of AC and the particle removal ability of UF simultaneously. The process was experimentally investigated using granulated and commercial powder-activated carbons. Experiments were conducted in order to study the effects of carbon type, carbon dose, and operating pressure on the process performance. The results obtained showed that the combined process achieved better rejection of dye than the OF process. Furthermore, powder-activated carbons were more effective than the granulated type.  相似文献

Calcium carbonate is one of the most common scaling minerals. In this paper we have used different electrical current modes (direct current [DC], pulsed DC, and alternating current [AC]) to control the amount, morphology, and distribution of calcium carbonate deposit on electroconductive epoxy/carbon nanofiber (CNF) coating. The effect of different current modes on surface scaling was visualized using scanning electron microscopy. It has been shown that both AC and DC anodic polarization limited scale deposition on epoxy/CNF coated surfaces, although the mechanisms of scale inhibition during AC and DC polarization were different. DC polarization of the coating at +2 V resulted in the smallest scale buildup without leading to coating degradation, while DC polarization at potentials as high as +5 V caused the coating to degrade. Interestingly, application of pulsed DC with high pulse frequency (50 Hz) inhibited the degradation. The type of current applied affected also the morphology of the precipitate at the cathode. The results presented in this work show, for the first time, how different modes of electrical current applied to electroconductive composite coatings can be used to control the morphology and distribution of calcium carbonate scale, and how the organic coating degradation at high polarization potentials can be avoided.  相似文献

In this study, the microstructure and defect characteristics of flash sintering under direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) were investigated and compared for the ZnO system. DC flash sintering resulted in grain size and porosity gradients within the sample, whereas AC flash sintering produced a sample with homogeneous and fine grain size. Raman spectroscopy revealed asymmetric peaks correlated to the lattice disorder. Using the Breit-Wigner-Fano model, the asymmetric peak fitting revealed redistribution of defects within the DC flash sintered ZnO, while the AC flash sintered ZnO had a comparable defect concentration to conventionally sintered ZnO.  相似文献

This research has two parts: at first part electro coagulation (EC) method was used to remove the dye Direct Black 22 (DB22 (in aqueous media. All experiments were done in a 2 liter reactor with two electrodes made of steel (SS-304) as cathodes and one aluminum electrode as anode. Parameters affecting the process, such as anode material, electrolyte concentration, current density, initial pH of solution and the initial dye concentration, were investigated. Total amount of consumed energy was used for determination of optimal conditions. According to the results obtained for DB22 at optimized conditions, color and COD removal percentage were 92% and 85%, respectively. In addition, the current efficiency for aluminum anode in removal of DB22 was 90%. At the second part of the research work, color removal by EC for six different dyes was evaluated. The results showed that dye structure and anode type are very important factors on performance of the process.  相似文献

The influence of an alternating (AC) sinusoidal perturbation, of known frequency and small amplitude, superimposed to the usual applied continuous (DC) signal in a desalination electrodialysis process has been studied. The experiments were carried out with two types of ion-exchange membranes and sodium chloride aqueous solutions of two initial concentrations and at different frequencies of the AC signal. The results show that the presence of the AC perturbation favours the desalination process, mainly at the lowest frequencies. This fact is considered as a consequence of that the electroosmotic transport accompanying ion transfer during the process is affected by the AC perturbation. This behaviour suggests that the presence of an AC perturbation may influence on the efficacy of the desalination process.  相似文献

The removal of basic dye such as methylene blue (MB) dye from the synthetic wastewater was experimentally investigated using an electrolytic cell (EC), adsorption and the combined effect of EC and adsorption technology called a three-phase three-dimensional electrode reactor (TPTDER). The performance of the each technology was checked on the basis of the efficiency of the systems. The experimental results are expressed in terms of the removal efficiency of the dye molecules. The results show that the TPTDER could efficiently remove the dye molecules from the aqueous solutions when compared with the EC and adsorption process. The removal efficiency reached as high as about 99% for an initial MB dye concentration in the range of 100–1,000 mg/L by TPTDER for 10 min at 12 V cell voltage and at specific airflow conditions. It was also observed that the removal of dye molecules depends upon the initial solution pH, applied cell voltage, contact time, and initial dye concentration. The recyclability of the particle electrodes in the TPTDER process was also checked. These findings suggest that TPTDER is a promising technology for the removal of dyes from the aqueous solution, and can be applied to the removal of dyes from the industrial effluents.  相似文献

Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical method to treat polluted wastewaters and aqueous solutions. In this paper, the removal of Diazinon was studied by EC on aluminum electrode. The effect of several parameters such as initial concentration of Diazinon, current density, solution conductivity, effect of pH, and electrolysis time were investigated on EC performance. The obtained results showed that the removal efficiency of EC depends on the current density, initial concentration of Diazinon and electrolysis time. The optimum pH is 3 and also the solution conductivity has no significant effect on removal efficiency.  相似文献

Malachite green (MG), which is primarily used as a dye, is a chemical that is listed as a class II health hazard because of its toxicity to humans and the environment. Adsorption is frequently used to remove this cationic dye from aqueous solutions. Structural changes of the molecule should be considered during removal, because MG (or chromatic MG+ at neutral pH) turns into protonated MG (MGH+) at acidic pHs and a carbinol base at basic pHs. In this study, batch sorption experiments were conducted to remove MG from aqueous solutions using talc. We studied specific removal behaviors and mechanisms of the MG for different pH solutions, including adsorption, precipitation, and alkaline fading.  相似文献

In this research, the removal of carmoisine dye from aqueous solutions using polypyrrole coated onto sawdust (PPy/SD) has been investigated. The sorption experiments were performed using both batch and column systems. The effects of some important parameters such as pH, initial concentration, sorbent dosage, exposure time, and temperature on uptake of carmoisine dye were investigated. Based on the data obtained in batch system, it was found that maximum adsorption is occurred under acidic conditions. Complete removal was observed when a dye solution with the initial concentration of 100 mg L?1 was treated by 1.0 g of the used adsorbent (PPy/SD) at pH value of 4 and room temperature. However, higher sorption was observed at elevated temperature. According to the kinetics study, it was found that the experimental data fitted very well the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model (k2 = 0.184 g mg?1 min?1). It was found that polypyrrole chemically coated on SD is an efficient system for the removal of carmoisine dye from aqueous solutions. Scallop shell was used as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of two anionic textile dyes, Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) and Acid Cyanine 5 R (AC5R), from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was characterized using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dye removal efficiency of scallop shell was determined as function of contact time, solution pH, initial dye concentration and adsorbent dosage. With increasing dye concentration, the adsorption of both dyes decreased, while it increased with increasing adsorbent dosage. Optimum removal of RB19 and AC5R was achieved at pH=6. Adsorption equilibrium data were well described by the Freundlich model. The maximum dye adsorption capacity of scallop shell as estimated from the Langmuir isotherm was 12.36 and 12.47 mg/g for RB19 and AC5R, respectively. The adsorption kinetic data showed excellent correlation with the pseudosecond-order model. It was concluded that scallop shell has a remarkable potential for the sorption of RB19 and AC5R and can be used for treatment of the dye contaminated wastewater.  相似文献

The viability of resistively sintering aluminum 5083 powder with an alternating current (AC) was explored under both as-atomized and cryomilled conditions. Samples were processed under an AC field and a direct current (DC) field. Samples processed by both methods exhibited similar microstructures and densities at different die wall temperatures. For as-atomized powders, similar densities (99% of theoretical [TD]) were achieved at die wall temperatures of 564°C under DC fields and 525°C under AC fields. For cryomilled 5083, densities up to 90% of theoretical were achieved at 550°C under DC fields, while density values 99% of TD were achieved at 500°C under AC fields. Based on these findings, it has been determined that AC fields can be used as an alternative to SPS for achieving optimal density.  相似文献

采用间歇实验,考察了初始pH、柚子皮投加量、柚子皮粒径、离子强度、染料初始含量及接触时间对柚子皮去除废水中的活性艳蓝KN-R及活性艳橙X-GN这2种染料影响。结果表明,酸性pH条件下吸附效果良好,柚子皮能有效地去除废水中的KN-R和X-GN,对KN-R和X-GN的去除率达到97.48%和95.63%;柚子皮粒径变化对吸附效果影响不明显,吸附时间宜控制在480 min以上。柚子皮可作为一种新型吸附剂应用于活性染料废水的处理,作为一种农业废物的资源化加以利用。  相似文献
