It is with sadness that we note the passing of Sol Garfield. Sol L. Garfield was born on January 8, 1918, in Chicago and passed away on August 14, 2004 at the age of 86. Sol Garfield's contributions have been recognized many times by awards committees, perhaps most notably in the "Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge" award of the American Psychological Association (APA), the "Distinguished Career Research" award of the Society for Psychotherapy Research, and as an honored figure in the APA Oral History of Psychology Project. There are few practitioner-scientists whose range of influence has stood up so well for such a long period of time. He is one of the most frequently cited and influential psychologists in America. He is also well known for leadership and administration in professional organizations, government research programs, and universities where high standards of performance and ethics are maintained. Sol Garfield will be sorely missed by society. He stood out as a consistent advocate of scientific evidence in service to psychotherapeutic practice. Jane Loevinger died unexpectedly on January 4, 2008. She was well-known for her work in psychometrics, her theory of ego development, and her widely used assessment instrument, the Washington University Sentence Completion Test. Among the first to focus on women as a demographic, Loevinger obtained funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. She developed measures of women's attitudes and formed a research group of her own that focused on the problems facing mothers and women in general. Loevinger was a perennial iconoclast and skeptic within her fields of interest. Despite her wry wit, or perhaps because of it, her opinions and contributions came to be greatly valued by her colleagues. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Obituary for Joseph Church (1918-2003). Among other things the obituary notes that in addition to writing and teaching, Joe was active professionally as a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health, the Children's Bureau, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Educational Testing Service, and other organizations. He served on the editorial board of Child Development from 1964 to 1968 and again from 1971 to 1975. Joe Church was invariably stimulating and often provocative. He encouraged his students to think independently and challenged colleagues to engage in meaningful debate. He will be remembered not only for his contributions to the shaping of developmental psychology in our era but for his sense of humor, sharp intelligence, and generous spirit. Presents an obituary for Arthur Benton, who was one of the pioneers of clinical neuropsychology. Benton introduced novel and objective neuropsychological assessment techniques that expanded psychologists' understanding of the deficits manifested by neurologically compromised patients, both adults and children. Benton also contributed important findings concerning hemispheric specialization. His studies, including innovative clinical assessment techniques, normative data, and examiner manuals, facilitated the emergence of neuropsychology as a separate field of research and stimulated the development of clinical neuropsychology practice in the United States and around the world. His work also exemplifies the cross-fertilization of neurology with cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, a direction that continues today. Obituary [Julian C. Stanley Jr.; 1918-2005]. Julian Cecil Stanley Jr. earned his doctorate in education (1950) studying partial reinforcement with William O. Jenkins. Julian assumed his first academic position at George Peabody College for Teachers (1949), now Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. There he was an associate professor in educational psychology and became president of the Tennessee Psychological Association (1951). In 1965, Julian became a fellow of Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and edited Improving Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis (1966). Julian began his paradigm-shifting work on giftedness in 1971. From Stanford, Julian went to Johns Hopkins University and remained there, working until one week before his death at age 87. Over his professional career, Julian wrote or edited 13 books and produced over 500 professional articles. For his work, Julian received two honorary doctorates and numerous honors. Deep, profound, and visionary, Julian C. Stanley led the life of the mind in the best possible sense: He uncovered basic psychological phenomena, invented methods, counseled intellectually precocious youth, and mentored others in implementing his discoveries and revealing important psychological phenomena. He was a rare blend of scientist and practitioner. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents an obituary of Paul Shafer Siegel. Paul Shafer Siegel was born in Richmond, Virginia, on January 12, 1918. Siegel died at age 84 on December 24, 2002, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Siegel's principal interests were in learning and motivation, but he could become enthusiastic about topics far from his base if they were challenging and subject to good design. He investigated the effects of emotionality on food and water intake, the relation of water intake to privation interval in the absence of food, and the importance of the dark-light cycle, among other topics. He extended the investigations of motivation and learning in laboratory rats to the investigation of behavior in retardates. He was interested in the effects of incentive motivation and in discrimination learning in those research participants. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Arthur W. Melton was born August 13, 1906, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and died November 5, 1978, in San Antonio, Texas. He had retired from his professorship at the University of Michigan in 1974 and had become a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught part time. His health deteriorated badly in the year before his death. Art Melton was a private man; some thought him austere and cold. It is true that he could be a bit brusque with the lazy and the incompetent, yet his kindnesses are legion. Perhaps one never fully got the hang of the man until one engaged him in a game of horseshoes, or on the putting green, or most particularly, in a poker game. No one loved a game of poker more than Art Melton, and he was absolutely relentless in his pursuit of the chips around the table. One began to realize that his fiercely competitive behavior might be just another manifestation of the way he had always viewed his profession; it deserved the best he could give it, and there would be no compromise on that.
