The startle reflex (SR) elicited by abrupt stimuli can be modified by attention to nonstartling stimuli that shortly precede the startle-eliciting stimulus. The present study of 15 recent-onset, relatively asymptomatic schizophrenic outpatients and 14 demographically matched normal control Ss demonstrated that attentional modulation of SR is impaired in schizophrenic patients. Specifically, the control group exhibited greater startle eye-blink modification following to-be-attended prestimuli than following to-be-ignored prestimuli, whereas the patients failed to show the attentional modulation effect. These results suggest traitlike attentional deficits in schizophrenia because the patients were relatively asymptomatic. The measurement of attentional modulation of SR may provide a nonverbal, reflexive, state-independent marker of the vulnerability to schizophrenia. Event-related potentials were recorded from 7- to 18-year-old children of alcoholics (COAs, n = 50) and age- and sex-matched control children (n = 50) while they performed a visual selective attention task. The task was to attend selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in an attempt to detect the occurrence of target stimuli. COAs manifested a smaller P3b amplitude to attended-target stimuli over the parietal and occipital scalp than did the controls. A more specific analysis indicated that both the attentional relevance and the target properties of the eliciting stimulus determined the observed P3b amplitude differences between COAs and controls. In contrast, no significant group differences were observed in attention-related earlier occurring event-related potential components, referred to as frontal selection positivity, selection negativity, and N2b. These results represent neurophysiological evidence that COAs suffer from deficits at a late (semantic) level of visual selective information processing that are unlikely a consequence of deficits at earlier (sensory) levels of selective processing. The findings support the notion that a reduced visual P3b amplitude in COAs represents a high-level processing dysfunction indicating their increased vulnerability to alcoholism.  相似文献

The attentional blink refers to the finding that the 2nd of 2 targets embedded in a stream of rapidly presented distractors is often missed. Whereas most theories of the attentional blink focus on limited-capacity processes that occur after target selection, the present work investigates the selection process itself. Identifying a target letter caused an attentional blink for the enumeration of subsequent dot patterns, but this blink was reduced when the dots shared their color with the target letter. In contrast, performance worsened when the color of the dots matched that of the remaining distractors in the stream. Similarity between the targets also affected competition between different sets of dots presented simultaneously within a single display. The authors conclude that the selection of targets from a rapid serial visual presentation stream is mediated by both excitatory and inhibitory attentional control mechanisms. Appraisal theories of emotion predict that the relevance of a stimulus to a person's needs and goals influences attentional allocation. We used a modified visual probe task to examine the influence of hunger and trait reward drive on food-related attentional bias. Both hunger and trait reward drive predicted degree of attentional “disengagement” from food images at short (100 ms), but not long (500, 2,000 ms) stimulus durations. Effects of hunger were found for both bland and appetizing foods, while effects of reward drive were restricted to appetizing foods. Our findings extend previous research showing delayed “disengagement” from threat-related stimuli, suggesting that both organismic- and goal-relevance are key biasing factors in attentional competition. Twenty-one older and 21 younger adults were administered a series of visual attention tasks. A series of quantitative models was applied to each observer's data to determine whether he or she performed optimally or suboptimally or showed a deficit-in-attentional processing. The results suggested that (a) older and younger observers were affected equally by the integrality-separability manipulation, (b) there are no age-related differences in selective attention performance for either integral or separable-dimension stimuli, (c) there are no age-related differences in dimensional integration performance with separable-dimension stimuli, and (d) older observers were more likely to be suboptimal when asked to integrate information from integral-dimension stimuli. Implications for current theories of attentional processing in normal aging are discussed.  相似文献

This study investigated the simple reaction time (RT) and event-related potential (ERP) correlates of biasing attention towards a location in the visual field. RTs and ERPs were recorded to stimuli flashed randomly and with equal probability to the left and right visual hemifields in the three blocked, covert attention conditions: (i) attention divided equally to left and right hemifield locations; (ii) attention biased towards the left location; or (iii) attention biased towards the right location. Attention was biased towards left or right by instructions to the subjects, and responses were required to all stimuli. Relative to the divided attention condition, RTs were significantly faster for targets occurring where more attention was allocated (benefits), and slower to targets where less attention was allocated (costs). The early P1 (100-140 msec) component over the lateral occipital scalp regions showed attentional benefits. There were no amplitude modulations of the occipital N1 (125-180 msec) component with attention. Between 200 and 500 msec latency, a late positive deflection (LPD) showed both attentional costs and benefits. The behavioral findings show that when sufficiently induced to bias attention, human observers demonstrate RT benefits as well as costs. The corresponding P1 benefits suggest that the RT benefits of spatial attention may arise as the result of modulations of visual information processing in the extrastriate visual cortex.  相似文献

Event-related potentials were recorded from 80 participants ranging in age from 7 to 24 years while they attended selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in an attempt to detect the occurrence of target stimuli. Color attention effects were identified as frontal selection positivity (FSP; 140-275 ms), selection negativity (SN; 150-300 ms), and N2b (200-450 ms), whereas target detection was reflected in P3b (300-700 ms). There were age-related decreases in the latencies of FSP, N2b, and P3b that paralleled decreases in reaction time and error rates. Also, the SN amplitude increased with advancing age, whereas both N2b and P3b showed changes in scalp topography. These results represent neurophysiological evidence that the efficiency of visual selective processes increases during childhood and adolescence. Developmental growth may take place at both relatively early and late levels of visual selective information processing.  相似文献

Previous studies that have found attentional capture effects for stimuli of motivational significance do not directly measure initial attentional deployment, leaving it unclear to what extent these items produce attentional capture. Visual prior entry, as measured by temporal order judgments (TOJs), rests on the premise that allocated attention accelerates perception, that is, stimuli that receive attention first are perceived first; thus, this method is a sensitive and direct measure of the time course of initial attentional deployment. The authors demonstrate, using a novel TOJ paradigm without cues, that displays of faces and facial threat show visual prior entry effects, that is, these stimuli are prioritized by the perceptual–attentional system over other stimuli competing for awareness. This study provides direct evidence of the extent to which motivationally significant stimuli capture attention over other concurrently displayed items in the visual array. The selective nature of human perception and action implies a modulatory interaction between sensorimotor processes and attentional processes. This paper explores the use of functional imaging in humans to explore the mechanisms of perceptual selection and the fate of irrelevant stimuli that are not selected. Experiments with positron emission tomography show that two qualitatively different patterns of modulation of cerebral blood flow can be observed in experiments where non-spatial visual attention and auditory attention are manipulated. These patterns of modulation of cerebral blood flow modulation can be described as gain control and bias signal mechanisms. In visual and auditory cortex, the dominant change in cerebral blood flow associated with attention to either modality is related to a bias signal. The relation of these patterns of modulation to attentional effects that have been observed in single neurons is discussed. The existence of mechanisms for selective perception raises the more general question of whether irrelevant ignored stimuli are nevertheless perceived. Lavie's theory of attention proposes that the degree to which ignored stimuli are processed varies depending on the perceptual load of the current task. Evidence from behavioural and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of ignored visual motion processing is presented in support of this proposal.  相似文献

Gains and losses in visual search were studied across the life span in a representative sample of 298 individuals from 6 to 89 years of age. Participants searched for single-feature and conjunction targets of high or low eccentricity. Search was substantially slowed early and late in life, age gradients were more pronounced in conjunction than in feature search, and all age groups were uniformly affected by eccentricity manipulations. However, developmental and aging trends were distinctly asymmetrical: Children's performance was particularly affected by the mere presence of distractors; whereas in late life, performance was particularly impaired on target-absent trials and with increasing numbers of distractors. The implications for life span theories of cognitive and attentional development and for cognitive-speed and inhibitory-control accounts are discussed. The attentional blink (J. E. Raymond, K. L. Shapiro, & K. M. Arnell, 1992) refers to an apparent gap in perception observed when a second target follows a first within several hundred milliseconds. Theoretical and computational work have provided explanations for early sets of blink data, but more recent data have challenged these accounts by showing that the blink is attenuated when subjects encode strings of stimuli (J. Kawahara, T. Kumada, & V. Di Lollo, 2006; M. R. Nieuwenstein & M. C. Potter, 2006; C. N. Olivers, 2007) or are distracted (C. N. Olivers & S. Nieuwenhuis, 2005) while viewing the rapid serial visual presentation stream. The authors describe the episodic simultaneous type, serial token model, a computational account of encoding visual stimuli into working memory that suggests that the attentional blink is a cognitive strategy rather than a resource limitation. This model is composed of neurobiologically plausible elements and simulates the attentional blink with a competitive attentional mechanism that facilitates the formation of episodically distinct representations within working memory. In addition to addressing the blink, the model addresses the phenomena of repetition blindness and whole report superiority, producing predictions that are supported by experimental work. Compared time to evaluate stimuli of varying sizes. When Ss expect an upcoming stimulus to be a certain size, response time increases with the disparity between expected and actual size. There are, however, 2 size adjustment processes, and they reflect 2 types of visual selection. In the first, a shape-specific image representation is used to separate a visual object from a superimposed distractor. These representations require the type of slow size scaling demonstrated in imagery experiments. The second size scaling process is faster and not shape-specific. At any given time the visual system is set to process information at a particular scale, and that scale can be adjusted to match an object's size. Because both selection mechanisms depend on size, they probably occur at a relatively low, spatially organized processing level. These findings lead to a new explanation for results that had been taken as evidence for attentional selection at the level of object representations. Recently, the authors presented evidence that new items can be prioritized for selection by the top-down attentional inhibition of old stimuli already in the field (visual marking; D. G. Watson & G. W. Humphreys, 1997). In this article the authors assess whether this inhibition extends to moving old items and test an alternative account of visual marking. Six experiments showed that old moving items could be inhibited provided they did not undergo abrupt property changes. Further, and in contrast to effects with static stimuli, the marking of old moving stimuli was based on inhibition applied at the level of a whole feature map, rather than at their locations. The results also rule out an alternative account of visual marking based on the top-down weighting of dynamic or static processing pathways.  相似文献

Event-related potential (ERP) effects of transient and sustained non-spatial visual attention were investigated in an experiment where subjects were instructed to attend to the color or form of visual stimuli in order to detect infrequently presented targets with the relevant feature. The to-be-attended feature was either varied in a trial-by-trial fashion (transient attention) or was kept constant for an entire experimental block (sustained attention). Both transient and sustained attention resulted in a larger negativity for attended as compared to unattended stimuli between 200 and 300 ms post-stimulus. This effect was more pronounced for sustained attention than for transient attention and larger for attention to color than for attention directed to stimulus form. In the sustained, but not in the transient attention condition, color attention resulted in larger positivities for attended stimuli between 150 and 200 ms and in the P3 time range. These effects are interpreted as evidence for the existence of non-spatial attentional selection processes that are more effective under sustained than under transient attention conditions and are different from processes of visual-spatial attention. Moreover, the results indicate a special status for sustained attention to stimulus color.  相似文献

Pashler (see record 1985-05791-001) reported that when Ss identified a probed letter in a display of 8 characters, the effect of stimulus quality on reaction time (RT) persisted full blown even when Ss had 300 msec to preprocess the display. Pashler argued that these results are incompatible with theories of late selection but that they are naturally accommodated by the ones of early selection. The authors report 14 experiments using Pashler's methodology in which the effects of stimulus quality were reliably attenuated with a preview of the letter array. Pashler's results were also replicated, but only under a narrow set of conditions. Several "early selection" accounts of the interaction of probe delay with stimulus quality were examined and rejected in favor of a late selection account. Attentional selection of an object in the visual field degrades processing of neighboring stimuli in young adults. A pair of experiments examined the effects of aging on such localized attentional interference. In Experiment 1, younger and older observers made speeded same-different judgments of target shapes that varied in spatial separation. Performance declined for both age groups as the distance between targets decreased, but an Age x Distance interaction indicated that the magnitude of this effect was larger for older adults. Experiment 2 ruled out sensory masking as an explanation for these findings. Results indicate that older observers experience losses in the ability to attend to multiple spatially proximal stimuli within the visual field. In rapid serial visual presentation tasks, correct identification of a target triggers a deficit for reporting a 2nd target appearing within 500 ms: an attentional blink (AB). A different phenomenon, termed repetition blindness (RB), refers to a deficit for the 2nd of 2 stimuli that are identical. What is the relationship between these 2 deficits? The present study obtained a double dissociation between AB and RB. AB and RB followed different time courses (Experiments 1 and 4A), increased target-distractor discriminability alleviated AB but not RB (Experiments 2 and 4A), and enhanced episodic distinctiveness of the two targets eliminated RB but not AB (Experiments 3 and 4B). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to trains of rapidly presented auditory and visual stimuli. ERPs in conditions in which subjects attended to different features of visual stimuli were compared with ERPs to the same type of stimuli when subjects attended to different features of auditory stimuli. This design permitted us to study effects of variations in both intramodal and intermodal visual attention on the timing and topography of ERP components in the same experiment. There were no indications that exogenous N110, P140 and N180 components to line gratings of high and low spatial frequencies were modulated by either intra- or intermodal forms of attention. Furthermore, intramodal and intermodal attention effects on ERPs showed similar topographical distributions. These combined findings suggest that the same neural generators in extrastriate occipital areas are involved in both forms of attention. Visual ERPs elicited in the condition in which subjects were engaged in auditory selective attention showed a large positive displacement at the occipital scalp sites relative to ERPs to attended and unattended stimuli in the visual condition. The early onset of this positivity might be associated with a highly confident and early rejection of the irrelevant visual stimuli, when these stimuli are presented among auditory stimuli. In addition, the later onset of selection potentials in the intramodal condition suggests that a more precise stimulus selection is needed when features of visual stimuli are rejected among other features of the same stimulus pattern, than when visual stimuli are rejected among stimuli of another modality.  相似文献

Studied relationships between hypnotic susceptibility and the vertex late component of the sensory evoked response (SER) in 30 undergraduates. Ss were classified as high or low susceptibles according to scores on the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility. The visual and auditory evoked responses were recorded under conditions of selective visual and auditory attention. When they were instructed to selectively attend to stimuli, Ss high in hypnotic susceptibility produced larger SERs than Ss low in hypnotic susceptibility, who showed an opposite pattern, with the largest evoked responses occurring to stimuli they were instructed to ignore. Results are discussed in terms of possible attentional mechanisms in hypnosis and a possible explanation for conflicting results in the literature dealing with the effects of attention upon the SER. The authors examined how visual selection mechanisms may relate to developing cognitive functions in infancy. Twenty-two 3-month-old infants were tested in 2 tasks on the same day: perceptual completion and visual search. In the perceptual completion task, infants were habituated to a partly occluded moving rod and subsequently presented with unoccluded broken and complete rod test stimuli. In the visual search task, infants viewed displays in which single targets of varying levels of salience were cast among homogeneous static vertical distractors. Infants whose posthabituation preference indicated unity perception in the completion task provided evidence of a functional visual selective attention mechanism in the search task.
