Over a period of 12 months, 1006 ovine and 1129 caprine genitalia were collected from an abattoir. 57-5 per cent of the sheep and 89 per cent of the goat specimens were gravid of which 26-9 per cent and 30-2 per cent, respectively, of the total were estimated to be over two months of gestational age. Transuterine migration of the early embryo was a feature in both species although it was more frequent in the goat. Signs of fertilisation failure or embryonic death was most frequently observed if associated with multiple ovulations. Three ovine and two caprine fetuses had severe developmental abnormalities, and a total of 30 specimens had either congenital or acquired abnormalities of the ovaries and uterus.  相似文献

During an abattoir survey, 8071 bovine genitalia were examined. Cysts of 2-5 cm or larger were found on one or both ovaries in 307, an incidence of 38 per cent. The cysts were arbitrarily classified anatomically into eight groups according to the number present and their texture, whether thin or thick walled, and to the presence or absence of a corpus luteum. The weight and dimensions of the cysts were recorded and any abnormalities of the genital tracts were noted. Ninety-six specimens (30-67 per cent) were associated with a corpus luteum and 217 (69-33 per cent) had no corpus luteum. One hundred and sixty eight tracts (53-67 per cent) had single cysts and in 145 (46-33 per cent) they were multiple. The incidence of multiple ovulations was higher in the cystic ovaries which had corpora lutea than in the non-cystic population. The incidence of ovaro-bursal adhesions in the cystic population was three times higher than in that found in the genitalia which had no cysts and it is possible that this resulted from trauma during rectal palpation.  相似文献

Thirty-four heifers not conceiving to three or more inseminations or natural service were bled and karyotyped by leucocyte culture. Twelve were found to be sex-chromosome chimeras of which five were single-born. Three out of the five singleton sex-chromosome chimeric heifers were slaughtered and at post mortem examination abnormalities of the reproductive tract were observed. Two the the slaughtered animals were Friesian heifers that had shown normal oestrous cycles and had reproductive organs apparently normal on clinical examination; however, one of them with 5 per cent male cells had a nonpatent cervix, while the other with 12 per cent male cells had non-patent uterine horns. Both heifers possessed functional ovaries, the former had an active corpus luteum and the latter had a developing follicle. The third heifer with 45 per cent male cells had a normal vagina, enlarged clitoris, seminal vesicles and gonads resembling fetal testes with both primitive ovarian and testicular structures. The Old Gloucester and Friesian heifers with 2-5 per cent and 12-0 per cent male cells are alive and have normal external genitalia but rudimentary uterine horns with no palpable gonads. Cytogenetic examination has demonstrated for the first time the existence of single-born freemartins resulting from the death of their male co-twins after fetal vascular anastomosis has been established.  相似文献

An abattoir survey of sheep and goats was carried out in The Gambia for one year. A total of 1248 goats and 438 sheep, predominantly young females, were slaughtered and sampled. Sixty per cent of the females of both species were pregnant. There were no significant differences between the dressing percentages of different breeds and age groups. Sex and stage of pregnancy had a significant influence on carcase yields in both species. In goats the highest carcase yields were obtained during the early dry season. Most of the animals were clinically healthy and there were few pathological findings postmortem. In both species, there was a seasonal fluctuation of packed cell volume (PCV), with a minimum during the rains, and although the prevalence of trypanosomiasis was low it reduced the PCV. Faecal egg counts of Trichostrongylidae were highest during the rainy season and goats had higher faecal egg and coccidial oocyst counts than sheep. In sheep, a breed difference was observed for PCV and an age difference for egg excretion. The peak or higher rates of egg excretion occurred during the rains in both species. The immune status against peste des petits ruminants was significantly lower in goats (39 per cent) than in sheep (49.5 per cent). Antibodies against bluetongue virus were found in 62.6 per cent of goats and 55.8 per cent of sheep.  相似文献

Gross abnormalities of the mammary glands of 1650 culled ewes were recorded. Clinically obvious lesions were detected in 211 (12.8 per cent) of udders; 77 per cent of lesions were abscesses. A generalised calcification of the whole of a gland was observed in 23 udders. It is concluded that abnormalities of the udder are an important reason for the culling ewes. The assessment of the cost-effectiveness of measures to reduce the incidence of mastitis would be worthwhile.  相似文献

Staphylococcal resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents, defined as inhibition of bacteria growth in the presence of an antimicrobial agent, was approximately 75 per cent among coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from milk and the teat skin of sheep. Resistance to broad spectrum antibiotics such as chloramphenicol and tetracycline as well as resistance to the combination of trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole commonly used for the treatment of animals, was high in both groups of isolates. Four isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis and three Staph xylosus isolated from the milk of dairy ewes were resistant to methicillin. Methicillin resistance is prevalent among human staphylococcal isolates and resistance to this antibiotic may reflect human handling of sheep.  相似文献

In order to determine the outcome and associated chromosomal and structural anomalies in fetuses diagnosed in utero as having a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, we reviewed 48 consecutive cases referred to our regional Fetal Diagnostic Unit between 1988 and 1995. All babies were delivered in units with appropriate neonatal resuscitation facilities. Thirteen babies [34 per cent of those tested, confidence interval (CI) 19-49 per cent] had karyotypic abnormalities. Three had trisomies but the other nine had more complex karyotypic abnormalities including translocations, deletions, and marker chromosomes. Twenty-one fetuses (44 per cent, CI 30-58 per cent) had additional ultrasound abnormalities which affected the heart in ten cases (21 per cent). Overall, 13 babies survived (27 per cent, CI 14-40 per cent). In babies with normal chromosomes and no additional structural abnormalities the survival rate was 50 per cent (CI 25-75 per cent). Poor outcome was not predicted by early gestation at diagnosis, the hernial contents, or the presence of polyhydramnios. We conclude that parents should be counselled about prognosis with information derived from series of prenatally diagnosed diaphragmatic hernias. The investigations offered should include a detailed ultrasound examination, particularly of the heart, and karyotyping by fetal blood sampling.  相似文献

Benzimidazole compounds have teratogenic effects in domestic and experimental animals. In this study, 14 Manchega ewes were treated orally, under controlled conditions, with 20 mg netobimin (a prodrug of a benzimidazole compound) per/kg bodyweight on the 17th day of pregnancy. Congenital malformations and abortions affected 60 per cent of the lambs. The main malformations were skeletal and renal, but vascular malformations were observed for the first time. The abnormalities were investigated using radiological, dissection and vascular injection techniques, and associations among them were recorded. The anomalies are discussed in terms of embryological considerations.  相似文献

A survey of the health of South American camelids in the United Kingdom was carried out between December 1992 and June 1993; 123 members of the British Camelid Owners and Breeders Association and 19 non-members were sent questionnaires and usable responses were received from 84 (59 per cent). In total 689 camelids were included, and in 1992, 66 per cent were Ilama, 21 per cent alpaca and 13 per cent guanaco. Their ages ranged from less than six months to over 10 years, with animals aged two to five years constituting the largest proportion. The mortality rates between 1990 and 1992 were 2.7 to 3.3 per cent for Ilama, 3.5 to 6.9 per cent for alpaca and 0 to 11.4 per cent for guanaco. The highest mortality was in animals less than six months and more than 10 years old; 4 to 11 per cent of Ilama deaths and 17 to 33 per cent of alpaca deaths were in animals aged less than six months and a high proportion of these occurred during the first week of life. In the cases for which a cause was reported, accidents and injury accounted for 20 per cent of Ilama deaths, and perinatal deaths accounted for 22 per cent of alpaca deaths. A third of the deaths were reported as being of unknown cause, and a veterinary diagnosis was reported in less than half of the cases. These data suggest that attention to the environment and housing conditions of Ilama, the neonatal care of alpaca and improvements in diagnosis are priorities for reducing the mortality and improving the health of South American camelids in the UK.  相似文献

Between 1982 and 1991, 159 sheep suffering from chronic respiratory disease were subjected to clinical, pathological, histopathological and serological examination. Maedi was diagnosed in 82 sheep and sheep pulmonary adenomatosis (SPA) in another 59. Forty-one of the latter (69.5 per cent) were seropositive for maedi-visna (MV) virus infection, but only six (10.2 per cent) showed concurrent lung lesions of maedi. Even disregarding the MV seronegative sheep and those younger than two years old, the rate of concurrent maedi lesions did not exceed 18 per cent. During a similar period, 5060 sheep from 161 flocks (86 of which also provided the 159 affected animals) were tested for antibodies to MV virus. The average seroprevalence of MV virus infection among flocks in which SPA was detected was 66.4 per cent, whereas in those in which SPA could not be demonstrated, and in those in which necropsies were not performed, the levels of MV virus infection were 55.1 per cent and 43.6 per cent, respectively. The effect of SPA on the seroprevalence of MV virus infection was independent of other factors, such as breed of sheep or the size of the flocks. These results provide evidence that SPA plays a role in the spread of MV virus infection, although a synergistic effect of the simultaneous infection on the expression of concurrent lesions does not seem to occur.  相似文献

The oviducts of 16 Saanen does, superovulated with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and synchronised with prostaglandin F2 alpha were flushed 75 to 86 hours after the injection of prostaglandin. The mean (sd) ovulation rate was 13.7 (3.9). The flushings were directed orthograde through a flexible intravenous catheter, which was introduced into the oviduct via the infundibulum. The flushing medium was recovered by a balloon-catheter, which was placed in the uterine lumen near the uterotubal junction. Five does were flushed unilaterally either because they had one blocked oviduct or because they had ovulated on only one ovary. The overall embryo recovery rate was 72 per cent. Nine weeks later 11 of the donor ewes were examined laparoscopically and no adhesions of the reproductive organs were observed. Eight of these does were synchronised with progestagen-vaginal sponges, superovulated with FSH and their oviducts were flushed again. Their mean ovulation rate was 16.0 (4.3) and 86 per cent of the embryos were recovered. The optimal time to obtain pronuclear stage embryos was 75 to 78 hours after the injection of prostaglandin. All the embryos recovered within this period were at the pronuclear stage whereas 28 per cent of those recovered one to six hours later were at the two- or four-cell stage.  相似文献

The relationship between expression of inhibin mRNA and ovarian secretion of estradiol (E2) and immunoactive inhibin was investigated at midluteal phase and throughout the follicular phase of the sheep estrous cycle. At laparotomy, timed samples of ovarian blood were collected and ovaries were removed from 39 Scottish Blackface ewes (ovulation rate 1.3 +/- 0.1) on Day 10 of the luteal phase or 24, 48, 60, 72, or 84 h after injection of cloprostenol (PG; 100 micrograms) on Days 10-12. Ovaries were removed and fixed for in situ hybridization using 35S-labeled antisense riboprobes transcribed from inhibin alpha, beta A, and beta B cDNAs. LH, E2, and inhibin concentrations were determined by RIA. On the basis of peripheral LH levels and the presence of estrogen-active follicles (E-A; > or = 3 mm in diameter secreting > 1 ng/min E2) or recent ovulations, animals were grouped as follows: presurge (24 or 48 h post-PG; LH < 5 ng/ml; n = 7), midsurge (with E-A; LH > 5 ng/ml; n = 6), late surge (large follicle not E-A; LH > 5 ng/ml; n = 4), postsurge (large follicle not E-A; LH < 5 ng/ml; n = 7), and postovulation (n = 10). As expected, E2 secretion by the "active" ovary (containing preovulatory follicle) tended to increase with follicular development such that secretion was maximal at midsurge and then declined. E2 secretion by the "inactive" ovary was low at all stages. Immunoactive inhibin, in contrast, was secreted in substantial quantities by both ovaries, although secretion from active ovaries was higher at all stages (p < 0.05). Effects of stage on secretion were not significant, but immunoactive inhibin secretion from active ovaries was high in postsurge animals when E2 secretion was very low. Hybridization for inhibin mRNA was specific for granulosa cells of antral follicles. While most sheep in the luteal (4 of 5), presurge (2 of 3), and midsurge groups (5 of 5) had at least one inhibin-positive large follicle (expressing both alpha- and beta-subunit mRNA), none were present between the LH surge and ovulation (late and postsurge groups). Inhibin mRNA was undetectable in midcycle CL, but 4 of 10 recent ovulations hybridized weakly with the alpha probe and one very weakly with the beta A probe. An eight-year study was conducted to define the epidemiology of gastrointestinal nematode infection in Suffolk and Gulf Coast Native (Native) breeds of sheep, and to determine if the Native sheep is more resistant to infection. For the initial three years, each breed grazed separate pastures where anthelmintic treatments were administered to individual animals on a salvage basis. For the last five years, both breeds grazed concurrently; anthelmintic treatments were administered to individual animals on a salvage basis for the first three years, and to all animals, when treatment criteria were met, for the last two years. The fecal egg count (FEC) and blood packed cell volume (PCV) were monitored, and tracer lamb nematode burdens were determined. Overall, FEC for both breeds increased in the spring (periparturient rise) for most years and in the summer for all years. Under separate grazing conditions, Native ewes and lambs had consistently lower infection levels than Suffolk ewes and lambs. During the haemonchosis season (June-September) each year, Suffolk ewe and lamb PCV decreased, and Native ewe and lamb PCV remained relatively stable. The salvage treatment protocol resulted in 27 treatments for Suffolk and one for Native ewes; similarly for lambs, 13 for Suffolk and zero for Native. Tracer lambs grazed with their respective breed, and the FEC and mean total nematode burden corresponded with the pattern of infection for their respective breed. The predominant nematodes found in Suffolk and Native tracer lambs were Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus spp., respectively. Under concurrent grazing conditions, the same seasonal repeatable pattern of infection was present and was exhibited by both breeds, with the Native ewes and lambs being consistently and significantly (p < or = 0.05) lower for FEC and higher for PCV. The salvage treatment protocol resulted in 57 and zero treatments for Suffolk and Native ewes, respectively; for lambs, 46 and 11. Tracer lamb nematode burdens again corresponded to their respective breed pattern of infection, with H. contortus and Trichostrongylus spp. being predominant in Suffolk and Native lambs, respectively. Data from all tracer lambs showed a relatively low level of hypobiosis (H. contortus only), and, although there was no consistent hypobiosis season, the tendency was for a higher level to occur in the fall. These results showed that the classic repeatable seasonal pattern of gastrointestinal nematode infection occurred in both breeds of sheep, and that Native sheep were more resistant to infection (specifically H. contortus) than Suffolk sheep.  相似文献

During the ten years between 1965 and 1974, 207 infants with a major congenital abnormality of the central nervous system were born at Mill Road Maternity Hospital, Liverpool; open neural tube defects occurred in 92 per cent of cases. Only cases of anencephaly were frequently diagnosed clinically before labour and this was rarely so for spina bifida alone. Only 11 patients (5-3 per cent) had previously been delivered of an affected infant. The routine screening of pregnant patients is briefly discussed.  相似文献

A lyophilised chlamydial vaccine was prepared from the 1B temperature-sensitive strain of ovine Chlamydia psittaci. Ewes inoculated with a low titre of the live vaccine four weeks before artificial insemination were challenged on day 70 of gestation with five UK field isolates of C psittaci, including strains A22 and S26/3 previously incorporated into a commercial inactivated vaccine. There was a significantly lower chlamydial abortion rate after challenge in the vaccinated group (7.1 per cent) than in the unvaccinated group (80 per cent). All the lambs born to the vaccinated ewes were viable and of good quality. The vaccine also reduced the number of infected ewes in the group and the severity of the infection. The compatibility of the chlamydial vaccine and a toxoplasma vaccine was also tested. The abortion rate of ewes vaccinated with the two vaccines at separate injection sites (16 per cent) was less than that of ewes vaccinated with both vaccines at one site (32 per cent).  相似文献

Acetylcholine (ACh) and noradrenaline (NA) release in the olfactory bulb (OB) of ewes was monitored using microdialysis. Both ACh and NA release increased at parturition in multiparous but not in primiparous ewes. However, vaginocervical stimulation performed 6 hrs postpartum induced an increase of ACh and NA release in both primiparous and multiparous ewes, indicating that a maturation process had occurred. Finally, pharmacological challenges to the ACh and NA inputs revealed differential responsiveness between nulliparous and multiparous nongestant ewes. A pasture was prepared so that an equilibrium of fresh and ageing eggs of Taenia hydatigena was present. This was done by placing dogs with patent infections on it for six months. Five months after their introduction, groups of lambs were grazed there for two, four, eight, 16 or 32 days. The dogs were then removed. Three and six months later, further groups of sheep were grazed there for a similar period. The infection pressures and the indices of clustering of the eggs were calculated by an examination of the lambs for cysts at autopsy. When the dogs were present, the daily rate of infection was about 60 per cent of the flock. This was reduced to 6.5 per cent then to 3.5 per cent within three and six months respectively after their removal. Very high cyst counts were obtained in some animals and the indices of dispersion diverged from a Poisson model during the period when the lambs were maintained on the pasture in the presence of the dogs. There was a trend for a reduction in the mean cyst counts and the index of dispersion tended to conform more closely to a Poisson model the longer the dogs were excluded. There was also a corresponding reduction in the survival rate of the cysts. It was suggested that an asymptote of less than 100 per cent in the prevalence rate may be accounted for by the acquisition of resistance without the persistence of infection and this was induced in some animals by the initial ingestion of ageing organisms which gradually formed the predominant type after the removal of the dogs from the pasture.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the urological abnormalities linked to spontaneous spongiform encephalopathy and their occurrence in the course of the disease. The animals used in this were 11 healthy and 20 scrapie-affected ewes. The scrapie-affected ewes were studied at a rate of once a month (1 to 5 measures; mean, 2.55) until they died. Urodynamic explorations were performed. The bladder activity was explored using cystometry. The urethral activity was measured during cystometry and during a urethral pressure profile. Both were analyzed using International Continence Society recommendations. Results showed in scrapie-affected ewes a decrease in functional bladder capacity and an increase in detrusor contraction incidence during filling of the bladder and in the occurrence of significant urethral instability. Bladder abnormalities were seen only in scrapie-affected ewes and worsened during the course of the disease. Urethral instability was not typical of the disease but was significantly more frequent in scrapie-affected ewes. It was concluded that lower urinary tract dysfunction occurred in scrapie-affected ewes and worsened during the course of the disease. This dysfunction is in agreement with overactive detrusor function due to neurological lesions.  相似文献

This paper describes a comparative analysis of human and farm animal salmonellosis in Scotland between 1993 and 1996, with particular reference to Salmonella typhimurium definitive type 104 (DT104). Cattle were the main reservoir, accounting for 73.1 per cent of incidents involving all salmonellae and 69.5 per cent of those involving S typhimurium DT104. The annual rates of incidence in people and cattle were recorded in each Health Board area. Dumfries and Galloway had the highest rate of incidence in cattle for all salmonellae (19.0 per 100,000) but people were affected uniformly across mainland Scotland. However, the rate of incidence of S typhimurium DT104 was highest in Dumfries and Galloway for both people (10.1 per 100,000) and cattle (13.0 per 100,000). In Dumfries and Galloway, Wigtownshire had the highest rates for all salmonellae and for S typhimurium DT104 in both people and cattle. In Dumfries and Galloway, 37.8 per cent of the adult cases of S typhimurium DT104 in people were among those known to have had regular contact with animals, and children under six years of age accounted for 36.3 per cent of the human infections in this region.  相似文献

The efficacy of moxidectin was evaluated in young ponies naturally infected with gastrointestinal parasites. Eight animals were treated orally with moxidectin at 0.4 mg/kg bodyweight and eight received only the vehicle. They were all necropsied two weeks later. Faecal samples were examined daily for egg counts and larval cultures. Parasites were recovered from total faecal samples collected daily and from the gastrointestinal tracts at necropsy. Moxidectin reduced the strongyle egg counts by > 99 per cent from three days after treatment but some individuals remained positive for 10 days. The drug had little or no ovicidal activity. As evaluated in the critical-controlled test, moxidectin was 99 to 100 per cent effective (P < 0.05) against luminal stages of parascaris equorum, Strongylus vulgaris, Triodontophorus species, Craterostomum acuticaudatum, 19 cyathostome species and Oxyuris equi. Adult S edentatus were also completely removed. Its efficacy against third stage larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis was 95 per cent (P < 0.05). Luminal nematode stages were removed within a few days, and bots continued to be eliminated for at least two weeks after treatment. No activity was observed against Anoplocephala perforliata. As evaluated in the controlled test, moxidectin was 100 per cent effective against Habronema muscae (P < 0.05) and had a 76 per cent but not significant efficacy against encysted small strongyle larvae.  相似文献
