"In 1955 we offered an undergraduate course, 'Experimental Industrial Psychology: Human Engineering.' " "As a text we selected Applied Experimental Psychology by Chapanis, Morgan, and Garner… ." A number of collateral reading sources were also utilized. "The course consisted of formal lectures on experimental methodology and the analysis of the relevant data of perceptual, learning, and physiological psychology." In the lectures "… emphasis was given in the lectures to various methodological techniques and controls as they might arise in applied research." An individual research project was required of each student. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

"This paper is a proposal to establish counseling psychology as a functionally unique pattern of practice." Three hypotheses are proposed, one of which holds that "… counseling psychologists resemble industrial psychologists to a greater extent than they do psychotherapists." Eight points are made in summarizing "… a relatively unique pattern of function for the counseling psychologist. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In light of N. D. Warren's (see record 1957-09051-001) that the term "human engineering" was first used as a title for the process of selection, placement, and vocational guidance, Stevens calls attention to the use of the term human engineering by Raymond Dodge, who may have been the first professional psychologist to impress the military with the need for the engineering of equipment for human use. Psychologists in public service have supported important federal policies and programs, such as Head Start. Their contribution is still critical. Given such technological national challenges as making solar energy economical, engineering better medicines, preventing nuclear terror, and advancing personal learning, psychologists should be involved in helping translate science, technology, education, and mathematics (STEM) innovations for the lay consumer. Psychologists can also provide useful advice and support for policies to strengthen the public service corps—policies that ensure a proper balance between work and life, including parental leave and telework. The preceding papers serve as a testimony to the strength of developmental psychology in providing insight into the workings of human psychology. We have seen a range of influences, from methodological to theoretical, all having an important impact on general psychological understanding and debate. In this discussion I will attempt to review the influences that each of the researchers has illuminated, and to raise questions that emerge from consideration of their papers. "1 out of every 15 doctoral degrees granted by US universities since 1920 has been in psychology. The total for the 43 yr. 1920-1962 inclusive was 11,951. During the 1920s the proportion was almost 5?% of all doctorates; in the depression years of 1930s it dropped progressively to about 4%, and dropped again during World War II to 3.3%. After the war, the proportion of psychologists among all doctoral holders climbed steadily to about 8% in the early 1950s, and has remained in the 7%-9% range for the past decade." Tables of psychology doctorates by sex, year, and subfields, granted by leading institutions and a table indicating leading Baccalaureate sources for psychologist PhDs, 1920-61 inclusive, are included. "Beginning with the 1953 APA Annual Convention, the Division of Business and Industrial Psychology has sponsored an annual all-day Workshop in Industrial Psychology concurrent with the Convention." The program titles and workshop leaders since 1953 are indicated. Major sections are: The Programs, Participants, Evaluation of the Workshops (Assets of the Workshops, Weaknesses of the Sessions, Suggestions for Improvements). 3 tables summarize information concerning the workshops. "Overall, the Industrial Psychology Workshops seem to have been satisfying and profitable experiences for the participants." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

"Clinical psychology is both a basic and an applied area. Because of the undeveloped state of both psychology and clinical psychology, research is by far the most important responsibility of the clinical psychologist. The university has primary responsibility for integrating training in both the basic and the applied areas. The private practice of clinical psychology is of minor importance. It should be restricted." Clinical psychology "is important both because of the contribution it has made and is making to basic psychology, and because of the potential social significance of its practical contribution." "The objectives of the present study were to get an indication of (a) the degree to which industrial psychologists and their activities have been accepted in the aircraft industry and (b) some of the factors related to this acceptance." "A questionnaire was mailed to 160 personnel executives in plants manufacturing products for the aircraft industry." Inferences are drawn regarding evolving trends, and inferences are drawn which "can be generalized to all the plants in the industry." This article introduces our motivation for producing a special section on new areas of research for I-O psychology. We briefly review presentations that sparked conversations around how I-O psychology could be applied to new contexts or related disciplines. We then introduce the articles that appear in this special section. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

An earlier article by the author outlined basic approaches to community consultation in a large Canadian university. This article discusses community psychology programming where the psychologist is an integral part of the target community. Examples of primary and secondary prevention are discussed, along with an example of how organizational psychological principles can be utilized within a university community. It is suggested that a community psychological approach to universities not only facilitates administrative policy-making but is also valuable in introducing university students to a paradigm of thinking about their living and working environment that they can carry out to the community at large. 89 executives attending a 1960 executive seminar of the American Management Association completed a 13 item questionnaire. "Almost twice as many executives stated that they would hire an industrial psychologist as compared with those who would decide against such a decision… . There are many executives still unconvinced that industrial psychology has any real worth at its present stage of development… . The areas of competence in which the industrial psychologist was judged to be most useful were morale, selection and training." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

By comparing the ratio of abstracts appearing in Psychological Abstracts to membership in American Psychological Association Division 14, the productivity of industrial psychologists over the years 1927-58 was judged not to be increasing as is generally assumed. "Get the academic people to write less; get the people in industrial settings… to write more; get the consulting organization staffs to be interested in research." Influence from psychologists in industry, consulting organizations, and professors of industrial psychology in universities is needed for this to occur. Although survey results seem to indicate an abundant interest among Canadian psychology graduate students in pursuing training in criminal justice psychology, the recruitment and retention of psychologists in the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has been of some concern. The present study is a 2008 survey of sites within CSC that provide opportunities for clinical psychology training with offender clientele. Survey findings demonstrated that a broad range of clinical psychology training opportunities were available across 16 sites. The most frequently cited barrier to providing training was lack of time by prospective trainers, and sites reported retaining relatively few of their trainees for subsequent psychologist positions. Information was also obtained regarding vacant psychologist positions across CSC regions. In light of survey findings, substantive discussion is devoted toward the issues of psychologist recruitment and retention in Canadian federal corrections, including a discussion of both potential and existing training initiatives. Reviews the book, Animal models of human psychology: Critique of science, ethics, and policy by Kenneth J. Shapiro (see record 1998-06437-000). The principle focus of most of this text is on the present-day use of animals in psychological research. In particular, Shapiro examines contemporary animal models of eating disorders, showing how psychology came to rely so heavily on animal models in the first place and how prevalent scientific attitudes about the use of animals in the laboratory have taken shape over the past several decades. In addition, he traces the recent rise of the animal rights movement and highlights the several philosophies upon which it is based. Drawing upon certain historical and empirical analyses, as well as certain themes in contemporary sociology of knowledge, Shapiro attempts to navigate his reader through the twin minefields of impassioned rhetoric and insufficiently examined conceptual commitment to a better understanding of the core issues surrounding the role of animals in scientific psychological investigation. "In general, the findings provide a partial sketch of how industrial psychology is perceived and evaluated by different groups of psychologists. The most common criticism is that industrial psychology is not sufficiently concerned with its ties to basic psychology… . In addition, serious questions are raised concerning the areas of research that are emphasized or slighted, the professional qualifications of many practitioners, tendencies to offer psychological judgments that reach beyond scientific results, frequent overselling of industrial applications, and an excessive accent on the practical in training industrial psychologists. Many psychologists also charge that industrial psychology is too management oriented, that it operates too much within a management frame of reference… . Finally, it should be noted that our results reveal wide differences of opinion among the psychologists questioned, not only between the industrial psychologists and the other professional groups but strikingly also within the ranks of each group."
