Participating in collaborative design discussion may impede the very activity it is supposed to facilitate, causing designers to disattend to listeners' perspectives (speaker centredness) and listeners to assume a more prominent (participatory listening) role in managing common ground. We report an investigation of these hypotheses in the speech and representational activity of teams of pre-expert design engineers engaged in authentic design tasks. Compared with gestural and speech-only discourse, design discourse accompanied by freehand sketching was associated with reduced listener monitoring, speaker-centric design arguments, and speaker-initiated turn-taking and closure. Listeners withdrew from direct and potentially distracting involvement during these presentations, but continued to provide unobtrusive evidence of attentiveness and understanding. These patterns of argumentation and closure point to tacit and intuitive ‘good listenership’ practices, in which listeners actively co-direct the grounding process in sketch discourse by making allowances for the cognitive demands it imposes on their colleagues. We explore the implications of these practices for design education and training, as well as for the use of new technologies for promoting effective design teamwork.  相似文献

Sketching is a most central activity within most design projects. But what happens if we adopt the ideas of collaborative design and invite participants that are not trained to sketch in to the design process, how can they participate in this central activity? This paper offers an introduction to how design material based on ethnography can be understood as sketching material. It suggests a process where the sketching tools are constructed within the scope of the project. Some practical details of how the design material has been co-authored will be explored. Finally, this paper shows how the design material has been used to co-author possible futures within the scope of design sessions.  相似文献

One of the most influential factors in architectural design is creativity. The enhancement of student creativity is a universally sought objective. This research hypothesized that computer-aided design, experience, sketching, physical modeling, learning environment, and images and visual references can serve as powerful tools to stimulate creativity in the architectural design process. It sought to investigate which of these components has the greatest impact on increasing student creativity. A total of 114 bachelor students and 347 master students of Architecture were surveyed using a questionnaire. Data were then analyzed using SPSS and one sample t-test and Friedman test for ranking. Results showed that experience can significantly increase the creativity of students in the architectural design process compared to the other components.  相似文献

The computer, the new media, reaches out and influences the behavior of design as it does almost every facet of life. In recent years, much research into the development of computer-aided design has looked at the concept generation stage of the design process. Most of these applied studies have focused on the testing of computer systems. On the other hand, there are also many studies on the visual thinking and cognitive behavior of designers while sketching or drawing in the stage of concept generation. From the synthesis of the two aforementioned disciplines, we can find that there exists a point of deficiency. That is, the cognitive research about designers using computers as sketching media is absent. It is this area that is discussed in the current paper. The fundamental analytic data of this research is the visual process chronicled from the sketching of subjects. The analytic data is the verbal data from the questions that the subjects are asked after sketching. The data is analyzed using three coding schemes. The cognitive appearance while designers generating concepts with computers or conventional media are propounded and discussed in this research.  相似文献
