Drivers' ability to react to unpredictable events deteriorates when exposed to highly predictable and uneventful driving tasks. Highway design reduces the driving task mainly to a lane-keeping manoeuvre. Such a task is monotonous, providing little stimulation and this contributes to crashes due to inattention. Research has shown that driver's hypovigilance can be assessed with EEG measurements and that driving performance is impaired during prolonged monotonous driving tasks. This paper aims to show that two dimensions of monotony - namely road design and road side variability - decrease vigilance and impair driving performance. This is the first study correlating hypovigilance and driver performance in varied monotonous conditions, particularly on a short time scale (a few seconds). We induced vigilance decrement as assessed with an EEG during a monotonous driving simulator experiment. Road monotony was varied through both road design and road side variability. The driver's decrease in vigilance occurred due to both road design and road scenery monotony and almost independently of the driver's sensation seeking level. Such impairment was also correlated to observable measurements from the driver, the car and the environment. During periods of hypovigilance, the driving performance impairment affected lane positioning, time to lane crossing, blink frequency, heart rate variability and non-specific electrodermal response rates. This work lays the foundation for the development of an in-vehicle device preventing hypovigilance crashes on monotonous roads.  相似文献

Prolonged driving under monotonous conditions decreases the vigilance of the human controller and his performance of the driving task. Variations of his control activity (vehicle related signals) were measured with the goal of receiving criteria for a warning device, which could improve the active safety of today's traffic. The investigations were performed on a rural circuit and on a driving simulator: the control variable for decreasing vigilance was the electro-encephalogram of the test subjects. Factor analysis and canonical correlation were used to investigate the relation between both data sets. The EEG parameters showed a frontal displacement under prolonged driving: thus a decreasing vigilance could be confirmed. Simultaneously the subjects' control activity in the tracking task became coarser. The accelerator pedal activity—which is a relatively free control variable—decreased with the test duration despite constant driving speed. This was explained with increased risk-acceptance at decreased performance or decreased vigilance.  相似文献

Driving is a complex task, which can be broken down into specific cognitive processes. In order to determine which components contribute to drowsy driving impairments, the current study examined simulated driving and neurocognitive performance after one night of sleep deprivation. Nineteen professional drivers (age 45.3 ± 9.1) underwent two experimental sessions in randomised order: one after normal sleep and one after 27 h total sleep deprivation. A simulated driving task (AusEd), the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT), and neurocognitive tasks selected from the Cognitive Drug Research computerised neurocognitive assessment battery (simple and choice RT, Stroop Task, Digit Symbol Substitution Task, and Digit Vigilance Task) were administered at 10:00 h in both sessions. Mixed-effects ANOVAs were performed to examine the effect of sleep deprivation versus normal sleep on performance measures. To determine if any neurocognitive tests predicted driving performance (lane position variability, speed variability, braking RT), neurocognitive measures that were significantly affected by sleep deprivation were then added as a covariate to the ANOVAs for driving performance. Simulated driving performance and neurocognitive measures of vigilance and reaction time were impaired after sleep deprivation (p < 0.05), whereas tasks examining processing speed and executive functioning were not significantly affected by sleep loss. PVT performance significantly predicted specific aspects of simulated driving performance. Thus, psychomotor vigilance impairment may be a key cognitive component of driving impairment when sleep deprived. The generalisability of this finding to real-world driving remains to be investigated.  相似文献

Many traffic accidents are caused by, or at least related to, inadequate mental workload, when it is either too low (vigilance) or too high (stress). Creating variations in mental workload and accident-prone driving for research purposes is difficult in the real world. In driving simulators the measurement of driver mental workload is relatively easily conducted by means of physiological measures, although good research skills are required and it is time-consuming. The fact that modern driving simulator environments are laboratory-equivalent nowadays allows full control with respect to environmental conditions, scenarios and stimuli, and enables physiological measurement of parameters of mental workload such as heart rate and brain activity. Several examples are presented to illustrate the potential of modern high-standard driving simulator environments regarding the monitoring of drivers’ mental workload during task performance.  相似文献

Time dependent decrements in performance are characteristic of activities that are monotonous and require focused attention for an extended period of time. A vigilance task is a task that participants can perform without difficulty for a short period of time, but with time their performance becomes impaired. A real world example of such a vigilance task is prolonged highway driving. The on-the-road driving test in normal traffic was specifically designed to measure the effects of vigilance decrement associated with driving. The primary parameter of this test is the Standard Deviation of Lateral Position (SDLP), i.e. the weaving of the car. This methodological paper explains the typical vigilance decrement seen in the on-the-road driving test and discusses the importance of sufficient time-on-task to elucidate potential adverse drug effects on driving. Performance decrements (SDLP increment) as a function of time are seen after both drug and placebo treatment, following a similar pattern over distance/time traveled. However, whereas for some drugs SDLP differences between drug and placebo are constant, other drugs produce additional performance decrement that increases over distance traveled. It is concluded that driving tests of short duration (e.g. less than half an hour) may fail to detect drug-related impairment, because participants are capable of, at least in part, counteracting the impairment by increased effort and motivation to perform the test.  相似文献

Monotony of road environment and driver fatigue: a simulator study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Studies have shown that drowsiness and hypovigilance frequently occur during highway driving and that they may have serious implications in terms of accident causation. This paper focuses on the task induced factors that are involved in the development of these phenomena. A driving simulator study was conducted in order to evaluate the impact of the monotony of roadside visual stimulation using a steering wheel movement (SWM) analysis procedure. Fifty-six male subjects each drove during two different 40-min periods. In one case, roadside visual stimuli were essentially repetitive and monotonous, while in the other one, the environment contained disparate visual elements aiming to disrupt monotony without changing road geometry. Subject's driving performance was compared across these conditions in order to determine whether disruptions of monotony can have a positive effect and help alleviate driver fatigue. Results reveal an early time-on-task effect on driving performance for both driving periods and more frequent large SWM when driving in the more monotonous road environment, which implies greater fatigue and vigilance decrements. Implications in terms of environmental countermeasures for driver fatigue are discussed.  相似文献

Ecstasy (MDMA) use raises concerns because of its association with risky driving. We evaluated driving performance and risk taking in abstinent recreational MDMA users in a simulated car following task that required continuous attention and vigilance. Drivers were asked to follow two car lengths behind a lead vehicle (LV). Three sinusoids generated unpredictable LV velocity changes. Drivers could mitigate risk by following further behind the erratic LV. From vehicle trajectory data we performed a Fourier analysis to derive measures of coherence, gain, and delay. These measures and headway distance were compared between the different groups. All MDMA drivers met coherence criteria indicating cooperation in the car following task. They matched periodic changes in LV velocity similar to controls (abstinent THC users, abstinent alcohol users, and non-drug users), militating against worse vigilance. While all participants traveled approximately 55 mph (89 kph), the MDMA drivers followed 64 m closer to the LV and demonstrated 1.04 s shorter delays to LV velocity changes than other driver groups. The simulated car following task safely discriminated between driving behavior in abstinent MDMA users and controls. Abstinent MDMA users do not perform worse than controls, but may assume extra risk. The control theory framework used in this study revealed behaviors that might not otherwise be evident.  相似文献

During a monotonous activity, certain behaviours occur that are not necessary to the performance of the task. These are subsidiary or collateral activities. Our purpose was to find out if the number of these behaviours tends to increase during a monotonous and prolonged activity. A study was carried out with 17 subjects performing a 2-h car drive on the Vigilance Analysis Driving Simulator. An analysis of the drivers' behaviour and of their state of vigilance allowed us to confirm the existence of a relation between the occurrence of these behaviours and the variations of the level of arousal. In addition, we determined for all produced behaviours, those that preceded, those that coincided with, and those that followed low vigilance phenomena. These results were interpreted in terms of behavioural signs, precursory of low vigilance, indicative of low vigilance, or reactivating the driver.  相似文献

Study objective

To compare the impact of extended wakefulness (i.e., sleepiness) and prolonged driving (i.e., fatigue) at the wheel in simulated versus real-life driving conditions.

Design

Participants drove on an INRETS-MSIS SIM2 simulator in a research laboratory or an open French highway during 3 nocturnal driving sessions. A dose–response design of duration of nocturnal driving was used: a 2 h short driving session (3–5 AM), a 4 h intermediate driving session (1–5 AM) and an 8 h long driving session (9 PM–5 AM).

Participants

Two groups of healthy male drivers (20 for simulated driving and 14 drivers for real driving; mean age ± SD = 22.3 ± 1.6 years), free of sleep disorders.

Measurements

Number of inappropriate line crossings, self-rated fatigue and sleepiness were recorded in the last hour of driving sessions to control the effects of prior waking time and time of day.

Results

Compared to the daytime reference session, both simulated and real driving performance were affected by a short nocturnal driving session (P < .05 and P < .001, respectively). Extension of nocturnal driving duration affected simulated performance nonlinearly and more severely than that of real driving (P < .001).Compared to the daytime reference session, short nocturnal simulated and real driving sessions increased self-perceived fatigue and sleepiness. Real and simulated driving conditions had an identical impact on fatigue and sleepiness during extended periods of nocturnal driving.

Conclusions

In healthy subjects, the INRETS-MSIS SIM2 simulator appropriately measures driving impairment in terms of inappropriate line crossings related to extended wakefulness but has limitations to measure the impact of extended driving on drivers’ performance.  相似文献

Research on how older drivers react to natural challenges in the driving environment is relevant for both the research on mental workload and that on age-related compensation. Older adults (M age = 70.8 years) were tested in a driving simulator to assess the impact of three driving challenges: a visibility challenge (clear day, fog), a traffic density challenge (low density, high density) and a navigational challenge (participants followed the road to arrive at their destination, participants had to use signs and landmarks). The three challenge manipulations induced different compensatory speed adjustments. This complicated interpretation of the other measures of driving performance. As a result, speed adjustment indices were calculated for each condition and participant and composite measures of performance were created to correct for speed compensation. (These speed adjustment indices correlated with vision test scores and subscales of the Useful Field of View®.) When the composite measures of driving performance were analyzed, visibility × density × navigational challenge interactions emerged for hazard RT and SD of lane position. Effects were synergistic: the impact of the interaction of challenge variables was greater than the sum of independent effects. The directions of the effects varied depending on the performance measure in question though. For hazard RT, the combined effects of high-density traffic and navigational challenge were more deleterious in good visibility conditions than in fog. For or SD of lane position, the opposite pattern emerged: combined effects of high-density traffic and navigational challenge were more deleterious in fog than in clear weather. This suggests different aspects of driving performance tap different resources.  相似文献

Twenty subjects completed an on-the-road experiment that consisted of two parts on two separate days. One was a one-hour driving test under the influence of alcohol (BAC less than = 0.05%), the second a two-and-a-half-hour driving test under vigilance conditions. Impairment of driving performance was measured in a car-following test as well as in a standard driving test. Changes in relevant physiological parameters, such as ECG and EEG, reflected changes in driver status and predicted driving performance impairment.  相似文献

Background and objective

Strategies adopted by drivers in order to cope with fatigue and falling asleep at the wheel include a variety of activities that may invigorate the body and/or the mind. The objectives of the current study were to examine the effectiveness of an energy drink and a non-traditional manual-dexterity/mastication activity as fatigue countermeasures.

Method

Twenty subjects participated in this driving simulator study. Each driving session lasted 2 h and each driver drove under three conditions: after consumption of an energy drink, while engaged in a self-paced manual-dexterity/mastication secondary task (shelling and eating sunflower seeds), and in a control condition with neither. Fatigue effects were assessed on three dimensions: subjective evaluations (using the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory), a physiological indicator (heart rate variability), and driving performance measures (speed, steering, and lane deviations).

Results

The subjective and physiological measures showed a significant effect of both treatments in counteracting the effects of fatigue when compared to the control condition. The results of the driving performance measures indicated that the energy drink was effective in counteracting fatigue, while the secondary task was as effective as the energy drink in counteracting fatigue on measures that did not rely on hand movements.

Conclusions

Drinking an energy drink prior to the driving task has a significant, positive effect in counteracting fatigue, though it may have long-term negative rebound effects. The manual-dexterity/mastication secondary task can temporarily counteract the subjective and physiological effects of fatigue while driving, but can interfere with vehicle handling.  相似文献

The current research examined the influence of loud music on driving performance, and whether mental effort mediated this effect. Participants (N = 69) drove in a driving simulator either with or without listening to music. In order to test whether music would have similar effects on driving performance in different situations, we manipulated the simulated traffic environment such that the driving context consisted of both complex and monotonous driving situations. In addition, we systematically kept track of drivers’ mental load by making the participants verbally report their mental effort at certain moments while driving. We found that listening to music increased mental effort while driving, irrespective of the driving situation being complex or monotonous, providing support to the general assumption that music can be a distracting auditory stimulus while driving. However, drivers who listened to music performed as well as the drivers who did not listen to music, indicating that music did not impair their driving performance. Importantly, the increases in mental effort while listening to music pointed out that drivers try to regulate their mental effort as a cognitive compensatory strategy to deal with task demands. Interestingly, we observed significant improvements in driving performance in two of the driving situations. It seems like mental effort might mediate the effect of music on driving performance in situations requiring sustained attention. Other process variables, such as arousal and boredom, should also be incorporated to study designs in order to reveal more on the nature of how music affects driving.  相似文献

In this study we examine the effect of several alcohol-related measures on self-reported collision involvement within the previous 12 months while controlling for demographic and driving exposure factors based on a large representative sample of adults in Ontario. Data are based on the 2002–2006 Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Monitor, an ongoing cross-sectional telephone survey of Ontario adults aged 18 and older (n = 8542). Three logistic regressions of self-reported collision involvement in the past 12 months were implemented, each consisting of 3 steps: (1) demographic factors and driving exposure entered, (2) driving after drinking within the last 12 months entered, and (3) one of three alcohol-related measures (AUDIT subscales of alcohol consumption, dependence and problems) entered. In each step, measures from the preceding step were included in order to control for those variables. In Step 1, age (OR = 0.989), region overall, Central East region (OR = 0.71), West region (OR = 0.67), and North region (OR = 0.67), income overall and those who did not state income (OR = 0.64), marital status overall and those married or living common law (OR = 0.60), and number of kilometers driven in a typical week (OR = 1.00) were found to be significant predictors of collision involvement. The analyses revealed that driving after drinking was a significant predictor of collision involvement in Step 2 (OR = 1.51) and each of the Step 3 models (ORs = 1.52, 1.37, 1.34). The AUDIT Consumption subscale was not a significant factor in collision risk. Both the AUDIT Dependence and AUDIT Problems subscales were significantly related to collision risk (ORs = 1.13 and 1.10, respectively). These findings suggest that alcohol, in addition to its effects on collision risk through its acute impairment of driving skills, may also affect collision risk through processes involved when individuals develop alcohol problems or alcohol dependence.  相似文献

A large proportion of crashes in road driving can be attributed to driver fatigue. Several types of fatigue are discussed, comprising sleep-related fatigue, active task-related fatigue (as a consequence of workload in demanding driving situations) as well as passive task-related fatigue (as related to monotonous driving situations). The present study investigated actual states of fatigue in a monotonous driving situation, using EEG measures and a long-lasting driving simulation experiment, in which drivers had to keep the vehicle on track by compensating crosswind of different strength. Performance data and electrophysiological correlates of mental fatigue (EEG Alpha and Theta power, Inter Trial Coherence (ITC), and auditory event-related potentials to short sound stimuli) were analyzed. Driving errors and driving lane variability increased with time on task and with increasing crosswind. The posterior Alpha and Theta power also increased with time on task, but decreased with stronger crosswind. The P3a to sound stimuli decreased with time on task when the crosswind was weak, but remained stable when the crosswind was strong. The analysis of ITC revealed less frontal Alpha and Theta band synchronization with time on task, but no effect of crosswind. The results suggest that Alpha power in monotonous driving situations reflects boredom or attentional withdrawal due to monotony rather than the decline of processing abilities as a consequence of high mental effort. A more valid indicator of declining mental resources with increasing time on task seems to be provided by brain oscillatory synchronization measures and event-related activity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effects of marijuana or THC on driving has been tested in several studies, but usually not in conjunction with physiological and subjective responses and not in comparison to alcohol effects on all three types of measures. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of two dosages of THC relative to alcohol on driving performance, physiological strain, and subjective feelings. METHOD: We tested the subjective feelings and driving abilities after placebo, smoking two dosages of THC (13 mg and 17 mg), drinking (0.05% BAC) and 24 h after smoking the high dose THC cigarette, while monitoring physiological activity of the drugs by heart rate. Fourteen healthy students, all recreational marijuana users, participated in the study. RESULTS: Both levels of THC cigarettes significantly affected the subjects in a dose-dependent manner. The moderate dose of alcohol and the low THC dose were equally detrimental to some of the driving abilities, with some differences between the two drugs. THC primarily caused elevation in physical effort and physical discomfort during the drive while alcohol tended to affect sleepiness level. After THC administration, subjects drove significantly slower than in the control condition, while after alcohol ingestion, subjects drove significantly faster than in the control condition. No THC effects were observed after 24 h on any of the measures.  相似文献

We evaluated the effectiveness of alertness maintaining tasks (AMTs) on driver performance, subjective feelings, and psychophysiological state in monotonous simulated driving in two experiments. In the first experiment, 12 professional truck drivers participated in five sessions of simulated driving: driving only, driving with one of three AMTs (counterbalanced), and driving while listening to music. AMTs were not equally effective in maintaining alertness. The trivia AMT prevented driving performance deterioration, and increased alertness (measured by standardized HRV). The choice reaction time AMT was least demanding but also increased subjective sleepiness and reduced arousal (measured by alpha/beta ratio). The working memory AMT caused a significant decrement in driving speed, increased subjective fatigue, and was regarded by the participants as detrimental to driving. Trivia was preferred by the majority of the drivers over the other two AMTs. Experiment 2 further examined the utility of the trivia AMT. When the drivers engaged in the trivia AMT they maintained better driving performance and perceived the driving duration as shorter than the control condition. The two experiments demonstrated that AMTs can have a positive effect on alertness. The effect is localized in the sense that it does not persist beyond the period of the AMT activation.  相似文献

Conducting polymers exhibit good mechanical and interfacial compatibility with plastic substrates. We prepared an optimized coating formulation based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl acrylate and fabricated a transparent electrode on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate. The surface resistances and transmittance of the prepared thin films were 500-600 Ω/□ and 87% at 500 nm, respectively. To evaluate the performance of the conducting polymer electrode, we fabricated a five-layer flexible polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) device as a PET-PEDOT-PDLC-PEDOT-PET flexible film. The prepared PDLC device exhibited a low driving voltage (15 VAC), high contrast ratio (60:1), and high transmittance in the ON state (60%), characteristics that are comparable with those of conventional PDLC film based on indium tin oxide electrodes. The fabrication of conducting polymer thin films as the driving electrodes in this study showed that such films can be used as a substitute for an indium tin oxide electrode, which further enhances the flexibility of PDLC film.  相似文献

To increase the processing gas flow rate in a fluidized bed filter, the effects of superficial velocity and fluidization state on PM filtration and combustion were examined by experiments using large bed particles (710 μm). The fluidization state at 710 μm was measured by image analysis and recurrence plot, and the superficial velocities as experimental conditions were determined to obtain almost the same fluidization state and filtration efficiency as those for small bed particles (420 μm) in previous studies. The BET-surface area of 710 μm is slightly larger than that of 420 μm, and the amount of potassium catalyst doped on large bed particles is comparable to that at 420 μm. The gas phase velocity is increased by increasing the processing gas flow rate, and the contact probability between PM and oxidizer increases. The PM combustion reaction is significantly promoted owing to the effects of the potassium catalyst and the increase in the gas phase velocity, and the minimum continuous regeneration temperature is 30 °C lower than that at 420 μm. As a result, fluidized bed filters using large bed particles can be operated in continuous regeneration mode at a bed temperature of 320 °C while maintaining a filtration efficiency of 100%.  相似文献
