Livestock movement is thought to be a risk factor for the transmission of infectious diseases of farm animals. Simple mathematical models were constructed for the transmission of Escherichia coli serogroup O157 between Scottish cattle farms, and the models were used in a preliminary exploration of factors contributing to the levels of infection reported in the field. The results suggest that cattle movement can make a significant contribution to the observed prevalence of E. coli O157-positive farms, but is not by itself sufficient for the persistence of E. coli O157. The results also suggest that cattle movements involving infected farms with cattle shedding an exceptional amount of E. coli O157, 'super-shedders', also make a substantial contribution to the prevalence of infected farms. Simulations indicate that E. coli O157 could have reached the currently observed prevalence levels in less than a decade. Implications and findings from our models are discussed in relation to possible control of E. coli O157 in Scottish cattle.  相似文献

This purpose of this work is to explore means of optimizing multi-stage wind farms using two derivative-free optimization methods: a hybrid Extended Pattern Search/Genetic Algorithm (capitalizing on the benefits of each), and a multi-objective Extended Pattern Search. Large onshore wind farms are often installed in discrete phases, with smaller sub-farms being installed and becoming operational in succession, creating the completed large wind farm in a piece-wise fashion over multiple years. Multi-stage wind farms present a complex and relevant optimization challenge in that in addition to accounting for the site-specific objectives of a wind farm (such as power development and profit), optimization of both the discrete sub-farms and the completed farm must be jointly considered. Two different problem formulations are explored: the first uses the optimal layout of a complete farm and then systematically “removes” turbines to create smaller sub-farms; the second uses a weighted multi-objective optimization over sequential, adjacent land that concurrently optimizes each sub-farm and the complete farm. For both problem formulations, two wind test cases are considered for both a square and a rectangular field: a constant wind speed from a predominant wind direction, and a multidirectional test case with three wind speeds and a defined probability of occurrence for each. The exploration of these resulting layouts indicates the value of the advanced multi-objective EPS and the hybrid EPS/GA, and gives insight into how to approach optimizing both completed wind farms and sub-farm stages. The behavior exhibited in these tests cases suggests strategies that can be employed by wind farm developers to facilitate predictable, optimal performance of multi-stage wind farms throughout their useful life.  相似文献

In this study, we parametrize a stochastic individual-based model of the transmission dynamics of Escherichia coli O157 infection among Scottish cattle farms and use the model to predict the impacts of both targeted and non-targeted interventions. We first generate distributions of model parameter estimates using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. Despite considerable uncertainty in parameter values, each set of parameter values within the 95th percentile range implies a fairly similar impact of interventions. Interventions that reduce the transmission coefficient and/or increase the recovery rate of infected farms (e.g. via vaccination and biosecurity) are much more effective in reducing the level of infection than reducing cattle movement rates, which improves effectiveness only when the overall control effort is small. Targeted interventions based on farm-level risk factors are more efficient than non-targeted interventions. Herd size is a major determinant of risk of infection, and our simulations confirmed that targeting interventions at farms with the largest herds is almost as effective as targeting based on overall risk. However, because of the striking characteristic that the infection force depends weakly on the number of infected farms, no interventions that are less than 100 per cent effective can eradicate E. coli O157 infection from Scottish cattle farms, implying that eliminating the disease is impractical.  相似文献

An important engineering challenge of today, and a vital one for the future, is to develop and harvest alternative sources of energy. This is a firm priority in the UK, with the government setting a target of 10% of electricity from renewable sources by 2010. A component central to this commitment will be to harvest electrical power from the vast energy reserves offshore, through wind turbines or current or wave power generators. The most mature of these technologies is that of wind, as much technology transfer can be gained from onshore experience. Onshore wind farms, although supplying 'green energy', tend to provoke some objections on aesthetic grounds. These objections can be countered by locating the turbines offshore, where it will also be possible to install larger capacity turbines, thus maximizing the potential of each wind farm location. This paper explores some civil-engineering problems encountered for offshore wind turbines. A critical component is the connection of the structure to the ground, and in particular how the load applied to the structure is transferred safely to the surrounding soil. We review previous work on the design of offshore foundations, and then present some simple design calculations for sizing foundations and structures appropriate to the wind-turbine problem. We examine the deficiencies in the current design approaches, and the research currently under way to overcome these deficiencies. Designs must be improved so that these alternative energy sources can compete economically with traditional energy suppliers.  相似文献

Turbine operations in a wind farm benefit from an understanding of the near-ground behavior of wind speeds. This article describes a probabilistic spatial-temporal model for analyzing local wind fields. Our model is constructed based on measurements taken from a large number of turbines in a wind farm, as opposed to aggregating the data into a single time-series. The model incorporates both temporal and spatial characteristics of wind speed data: in addition to using a time epoch mechanism to model temporal nonstationarity, our model identifies an informative neighborhood of turbines that are spatially related, and consequently, constructs an ensemble-like predictor using the data associated with the neighboring turbines. Using actual wind data measured at 200 wind turbines in a wind farm, we found that the two modeling elements benefit short-term wind speed forecasts. We also investigate the use of regime switching to account for the effect of wind direction and the use of geostrophic wind to account for the effects of meteorologic factors other than wind. These at best provide a small performance boost to speed forecast.  相似文献

Currently, a large proportion of proposed UK wind farms have either concerns raised at the pre-planning stage or formal objections made by radar operators on the basis of the potential for wind turbines to cause interference to radar systems. The current generation of on and off-shore three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbines have radar signatures consistent with their often very large physical size and hence considerable potential to reduce the ability of ground-based radars to detect targets in the vicinity of the farm. The impact of wind farms, particularly on ground-based aviation radars such as those operated for air defence and military and civil air traffic control purposes is likely to become particularly acute as European Union member governments strive to meet the requirements for energy generation under the Renewables Obligation. In addition, the increasing number of offshore wind farm projects proposed has the potential to cause interference to marine radars such as coastal vessel traffic services and those on-board vessels for navigational purposes. This study considers the options available for the reduction of turbine radar signature and presents solutions for each of the main external turbine components. The radar signature reduction approaches are based on existing technologies developed for aerospace stealth applications. However, the realisation of these for the purposes of reducing wind turbine radar signatures is a novel development, particularly in the solutions proposed. The reduction of wind turbine-induced radar interference is a growing area of research.  相似文献

Identifying ecological drivers of tick-borne pathogen spread has great value for tick-borne disease management. However, theoretical investigations into the consequences of host movement behaviour on pathogen spread dynamics in heterogeneous landscapes remain limited because spatially explicit epidemiological models that incorporate more realistic mechanisms governing host movement are rare. We built a mechanistic movement model to investigate how the interplay between multiple ecological drivers affects the risk of tick-borne pathogen spread across heterogeneous landscapes. We used the model to generate simulations of tick dispersal by migratory birds and terrestrial hosts across theoretical landscapes varying in resource aggregation, and we performed a sensitivity analysis to explore the impacts of different parameters on the infected tick spread rate, tick infection prevalence and infected tick density. Our findings highlight the importance of host movement and tick population dynamics in explaining the infected tick spread rate into new regions. Tick infection prevalence and infected tick density were driven by predictors related to the infection process and tick population dynamics, respectively. Our results suggest that control strategies aiming to reduce tick burden on tick reproduction hosts and encounter rate between immature ticks and pathogen amplification hosts will be most effective at reducing tick-borne disease risk.  相似文献

The placement of wind turbines is crucial for a wind farm because the power generation of wind turbine is greatly affected by the wake effect produced by the upstream turbines. The optimum placement of wind turbines in a wind farm will give the maximum total power output. The effective methodology is imperative to place turbines in such a way that effect of the wake is minimum on a performance of turbines and has a proper utilization of the wind farm area. The present study proposes a novel approach based on the geometrical pattern-inspired placement methodology to locate wind turbines and maximize the power output of a wind farm. In the proposed approach, various geometrical patterns made from circle, hexagon, pentagon and triangle are considered for the numerical investigation. Further, wind behavior is modeled for uniform and variable wind speed from all directions. The present approach is also experimented numerically with and without land availability constraints. Heat transfer search algorithm is used to solve the wind farm layout optimization problem with the proposed approach and the results are compared with other approaches available in the literature. Results show that the proposed geometrical pattern-based approach produces the higher power generation (~4–8%) compared to other approaches for the variable wind speed scenario. In the case of land availability constraints, about 4% higher power generation compared to the grid-based approach is achieved. In order to place turbines with an optimum performance of a wind farm, the present approach can be helpful to wind farm developers.  相似文献

Agricultural machinery is a major source of injury on farms. The importance of machinery safety practices as potential determinants of injury remains incompletely understood. We examined two such safety practices as risk factors for injury: (1) the presence of safety devices on machinery and (2) low levels of routine machinery maintenance. Our data source was the Saskatchewan Farm Injury Cohort baseline survey (n = 2390 farms). Factor analysis was used to create measures of the two operational safety practices. The farm was the unit for all analyses and associations were evaluated using multiple Poisson regression models. Limited presence of safety devices on machinery during farm operations was associated with higher risks for injury (RR 1.94; 95% CI 1.13-3.33; ptrend = 0.02). Lower routine maintenance scores were associated with significantly reduced risks for injury (RR 0.54; 95% CI 0.29-0.98; ptrend = 0.05). The first finding implies that injury prevention programs require continued focus on the use of safety devices on machinery. The second finding could indicate that maintenance itself is a risk factor or that more modern equipment that requires less maintenance places the operator at lower risk. These findings provide etiological data that confirms the practical importance of operational safety practices as components of injury control strategies on farms.  相似文献

This study aims to find appropriate locations for wind farms that can maximize the overall energy output while controlling the effects of wind speed variability. High wind speeds are required to obtain the maximum possible power output of a wind farm. However, balancing the wind energy supplies over time by selecting diverse locations is necessary. The chemotaxis pathway of the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides shares many similarities with that of Escherichia coli. It exhibits robust adaptation and has several homologues of the latter''s chemotaxis proteins. Recent theoretical results have correctly predicted that the E. coli output behaviour is unchanged under scaling of its ligand input signal; this property is known as fold-change detection (FCD). In the light of recent experimental results suggesting that R. sphaeroides may also show FCD, we present theoretical assumptions on the R. sphaeroides chemosensory dynamics that can be shown to yield FCD behaviour. Furthermore, it is shown that these assumptions make FCD a property of this system that is robust to structural and parametric variations in the chemotaxis pathway, in agreement with experimental results. We construct and examine models of the full chemotaxis pathway that satisfy these assumptions and reproduce experimental time-series data from earlier studies. We then propose experiments in which models satisfying our theoretical assumptions predict robust FCD behaviour where earlier models do not. In this way, we illustrate how transient dynamic phenotypes such as FCD can be used for the purposes of discriminating between models that reproduce the same experimental time-series data.  相似文献

A central question in movement research is how animals use information and movement to promote encounter success. Current random search theory identifies reorientation patterns as key to the compromise between optimizing encounters for both nearby and faraway targets, but how the balance between intrinsic motor programmes and previous environmental experience determines the occurrence of these reorientation behaviours remains unknown. We used high-resolution tracking and imaging data to describe the complete motor behaviour of Caenorhabditis elegans when placed in a novel environment (one in which food is absent). Movement in C. elegans is structured around different reorientation behaviours, and we measured how these contributed to changing search strategies as worms became familiar with their new environment. This behavioural transition shows that different reorientation behaviours are governed by two processes: (i) an environmentally informed ‘extrinsic’ strategy that is influenced by recent experience and that controls for area-restricted search behaviour, and (ii) a time-independent, ‘intrinsic’ strategy that reduces spatial oversampling and improves random encounter success. Our results show how movement strategies arise from a balance between intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms, that search behaviour in C. elegans is initially determined by expectations developed from previous environmental experiences, and which reorientation behaviours are modified as information is acquired from new environments.  相似文献

由于风电固有的随机性与间歇性,使得风电场输出功率往往具有较大的波动。然而考虑到储能装置的昂贵成本,单独为风电场配置储能装置不利于其经济运行。为此,文中针对考虑电动汽车参与的风电场输出功率波动平抑方法进行了研究。根据国家标准中风电“有功功率变化”的要求,通过爬坡率概念来描述风电场输出功率变化率。采用鲁棒优化的方法处理风电出力的不确定性,建立风电机组和电动汽车协调控制的双层优化模型:上层模型决策者是风电场,以风电场售电收益最大化为目标函数;下层模型决策者是电动汽车车主,以电动汽车电费支出成本最小化为目标函数。通过线性规划对偶定理和Karush-KuhnTucker(KKT)最优性条件将此鲁棒优化模型转化为混合整数线性规划问题进行求解。最后,通过仿真结果验证了所提模型和方法的有效性。  相似文献

Reliability has an impact on wind energy project costs and benefits. Both life test data and field failure data can be used for reliability analysis. In wind energy industry, wind farm operators have greater interest in recording wind turbine operating data. However, field failure data may be tainted or incomplete, and therefore it needs a more general mathematical model and algorithms to solve the model. The aim of this paper is to provide a solution to this problem. A three-parameter Weibull failure rate function is discussed for wind turbines and the parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood and least squares. Two populations of German and Danish wind turbines are analyzed. The traditional Weibull failure rate function is also employed for comparison. Analysis shows that the three-parameter Weibull function can obtain more accuracy on reliability growth of wind turbines. This work will be helpful in the understanding of the reliability growth of wind energy systems as wind energy technologies evolving. The proposed three-parameter Weibull function is also applicable to the life test of the components that have been used for a period of time, not only in wind energy but also in other industries.  相似文献

The 0-1 quadratic knapsack problem (QKP) in wind farm layout optimization models possible turbine locations as nodes, and power loss due to wake effects between pairs of turbines as edges in a complete graph. The goal is to select up to a certain number of turbine locations such that the sum of selected node and edge coefficients is maximized. Finding the optimal solution to the QKP is difficult in general, but it is possible to obtain a tight upper bound on the QKP's optimal value which facilitates the use of heuristics to solve QKPs by giving a good estimate of the optimality gap of any feasible solution. This article applies an upper bound method that is especially well-suited to QKPs in wind farm layout optimization due to certain features of the formulation that reduce the computational complexity of calculating the upper bound. The usefulness of the upper bound was demonstrated by assessing the performance of the greedy algorithm for solving QKPs in wind farm layout optimization. The results show that the greedy algorithm produces good solutions within 4% of the optimal value for small to medium sized problems considered in this article.  相似文献

Wind turbines are a major source of renewable energy. Load monitoring is considered to improve reliability of the systems and to reduce the cost of operation. We propose a load monitoring system which consists of inertial measurement units. These track the movement of rotor blade, hub and tower top. In addition, wind turbine states, e.g. yaw angle, pitch angle and rotation speed, are recorded. By solving a navigation algorithm with a Kalman Filter approach, the raw sensor data is combined with an error model to reduce the tracking error. In total, five inertial measurement units are installed on the research wind energy converter AD 8–180 on the test site in Bremerhaven. Results show that tracking the blade movement in full operation is possible and that loads can be estimated with a model-based approach. In comparison to simulations, the blade deflections can be approximated by an aeroelastic model. The presented approach can be used as basis for comprehensive load monitoring and observer system with additional increase of system robustness by measurement redundancy.

This article proposes a method with light data requirements for generating robust wind farm layouts. Robustness in this work is quantified as the lowest energy conversion efficiency of the wind farm across all wind directions. A quadratic integer programming formulation for generating robustness-maximizing layouts is presented. Small instances of the proposed formulation can be solved to optimality using branch and bound. A modified greedy algorithm that guarantees solution feasibility with regards to inter-turbine safety distance is proposed to find solutions to larger problem instances. A series of experiments were conducted using real world wind data collected at two sites to demonstrate the trade-offs in power generation between robust layouts and power output maximizing layouts. The results show a loss of around 1.1% in hourly power generation in return for an increase in minimum power output of 1% to 45% across all directions for robust layouts generated in the experiments. The increase in robustness largely depends on the shape and orientation of the wind farm relative to the dominant wind direction, as well as the difference between the average wind speed at the site of the wind farm and rated wind speed of the turbines.  相似文献

Datasets from which wildlife contact networks of epidemiological importance can be inferred are becoming increasingly common. A largely unexplored facet of these data is finding evidence of spatial constraints on who has contact with whom, despite theoretical epidemiologists having long realized spatial constraints can play a critical role in infectious disease dynamics. A graph dissimilarity measure is proposed to quantify how close an observed contact network is to being purely spatial whereby its edges are completely determined by the spatial arrangement of its nodes. Statistical techniques are also used to fit a series of mechanistic models for contact rates between individuals to the binary edge data representing presence or absence of observed contact. These are the basis for a second measure that quantifies the extent to which contacts are being mediated by distance. We apply these methods to a set of 128 contact networks of field voles (Microtus agrestis) inferred from mark–recapture data collected over 7 years and from four sites. Large fluctuations in vole abundance allow us to demonstrate that the networks become increasingly similar to spatial proximity graphs as vole density increases. The average number of contacts, , was (i) positively correlated with vole density across the range of observed densities and (ii) for two of the four sites a saturating function of density. The implications for pathogen persistence in wildlife may be that persistence is relatively unaffected by fluctuations in host density because at low density is low but hosts move more freely, and at high density is high but transmission is hampered by local build-up of infected or recovered animals.  相似文献

This paper presents lessons learned from own research studies and field experiments with drivetrains on floating wind turbines over the last ten years. Drivetrains on floating support structures are exposed to wave-induced motions in addition to wind loading and motions. This study investigates the drivetrain-floater interactions from two different viewpoints: how drivetrain impacts the sub-structure design; and how drivetrain responses and life are affected by the floater and support structure motion. The first one is linked to the drivetrain technology and layout, while the second question addresses the influence of the wave-induced motion. The results for both perspectives are presented and discussed. Notably, it is highlighted that the effect of wave induced motions may not be as significant as the wind loading on the drivetrain responses particularly in larger turbines. Given the limited experience with floating wind turbines, however, more research is needed. The main aim with this article is to synthesize and share own research findings on the subject in the period since 2009, the year that the first full-scale floating wind turbine, Hywind Demo, entered operation in Norway.
