Interpopulation variation in the diet of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, is well documented. In this study, we examined the gut morphology and apparent absorption efficiencies of two populations of wood mice whose diet in the field was known to differ. One population inhabited sand dunes, where food availability was relatively low and the diet was dominated by invertebrates. The other population lived in deciduous woodland, with greater food availability and a diet consisting primarily of seeds. Wood mice from the woodland had longer small intestines and total digestive tract lengths than mice from the sand dunes. However, these differences had no effect on the apparent absorption efficiencies of dry mass or energy when the mice were fed mealworms, wheat grain, or All-Bran diets (apparent energy absorption efficiencies of 88%, 89%, and 65%, respectively). The population differences in gut morphometry may be linked to different resource availabilities at the two field sites.  相似文献

Fermentable energy in insoluble dietary fibre (DF) sources was evaluated by in vivo and in vitro methods using rats. Test diets contained 50 and 100 g maize husk or organic-acid-treated maize husk/kg diet. Soluble fractions were removed from both the DF sources by washing. The acid treatment increased digestibility by a microbial hemicellulase from 12.7% to 32.6%. The fermentability of DF was evaluated by measurement of the production rate of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in a short-term in vitro incubation of the caecal contents of rats fed on test diets for 22 d. The production rates of the major SCFA, acetic, propionic and butyric acids, were increased by feeding both DF sources, and these production rates in the acid-treated DF group were significantly higher than those in the untreated DF group. The production rate of a minor SCFA, isovaleric acid, was decreased by feeding both diets. The production rate of total SCFA in rats given the acid-treated maize husk was 32.6% higher than that in rats given the untreated maize husk. The fermentable energy in DF was estimated in vivo by subtracting the faecal excretion of DF energy from ingested DF energy. The fermentable energy in DF was increased by the acid treatment (32.5% in maize husk and 63.4% in acid-treated maize husk), which agreed with the SCFA production rate predicted in the caecum. These results indicate that a short-term incubation of caecal contents is a useful method for evaluation of the fermentability of DF sources, and that acid treatment can increase the fermentability of an insoluble DF source.  相似文献

Reptiles show a high degree of physiological adaptation to their habitates. The digestive tract is characteristic in herbi- or folivorous, omni-, ovi- and carnivorous species, mainly differing in the length and volume of small and large intestine. The specialization requires adequate feeding methods for captured reptiles, not only with regards to the composition of the diet, but also to the feeding techniques. The quantitative knowledge of energy and nutrient requirements is still incomplete and feeding experiments are urgently required. Energy demand for maintenance is considerably lower than in warm blooded species (around 50-60 kJ ME/kg BW0.75/d). Nutritional disorders are found mainly in herbivorous species, especially if unbalanced rations with only one or two feedstuffs are offered. Among nutrient deficiencies, concerning vitamins and minerals, overdosage of some nutrients is encountered occasionally, which may be detrimental especially in case of vitamin A and D.  相似文献

Olestra is a fat substitute made from sucrose and vegetable oil. Olestra is neither digested nor absorbed, and therefore adds no calories or fat to the diet. Because the gut is the only organ that is exposed to olestra, the potential for olestra to affect gastrointestinal structure and function, and the absorption of nutrients from the gut, has been investigated. Histological evaluations performed after long-term feeding studies have shown no indications that olestra causes injury to the gastrointestinal mucosa. Olestra is not metabolized by the colonic microflora, and has no meaningful effects on the metabolic function of these organisms. Studies of gastrointestinal transit have shown that the consumption of olestra with food does not affect gastric emptying, or small or large bowel transit times. Olestra does not affect the absorption of macronutrients, water-soluble vitamins or minerals. It causes a dose-responsive decrease in the availability of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K; however, this potentially adverse effect is offset by the addition of vitamins to olestra-containing foods. Olestra has no consistent effect on the amount of total bile acids excreted in the faeces, and therefore probably has no significant effect on bile acid absorption. The occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea, loose stools, gas and abdominal cramping, after consumption of olestra under ordinary snacking conditions is comparable to that following consumption of triglyceride-containing snacks.  相似文献

Beef tallow was hydrolyzed to produce a series of fats with 3, 10, 20, 46, and 100% free fatty acids, which were incorporated at the level of 10% into semipurified diets. These diets along with a low-fat control diet were each fed to five piglets from 10 to 22 days of age. Tridodecyl glycerol ether was used as an indicator of fat absorption. Feces samples were collected between 19 and 22 days of age and the pigs were killed to allow samples of digesta to be collected. Analysis of feces and digesta allowed the progress of fat absorption to be monitored through the digestive tract. The corrected absorbability of the total lipid was between 88 and 93% for the partially hydrolyzed tallows, but was only 75% for the completely hydrolyzed tallow. The oleic acid was well absorbed (95-99%) in all the diets; palmitic and stearic acids were also well absorbed in the intact and partially hydrolyzed tallow (82-84% and 63-77%, respectively, the for palmitic and stearic acids), but their absorption was impaired in the completely hydrolyzed tallow (62% and 38ll intestine is the major site of fat uptake. Comparison of the amounts of fatty acids in the ileal digesta and in thl feces showed that there was no change in the total amount of fat in the digesta as it passed through the large intestine.  相似文献

Biliary/pancreatic (B/P) secretions are a major component of endogenous secretions, and endogenously secreted Zn is a primary means of Zn homeostasis. This study examined whether B/P fluid alters the absorption/reabsorption of Zn and, in doing so, whether this contributes to homeostatic control of Zn. Animal experiments utilized rats fed 10 or 300 micrograms Zn/kg diet. An open-ended gut perfusion study in which 65Zn-labeled B/P fluid or 67Zn-labeled and digested diet found significantly decreased Zn absorption from B/P fluid. Although Zn absorption from both sources was less in animals fed diets higher in Zn, there was no interaction of treatment and diet. Further studies utilizing cultured human colon carcinoma cells (CACO-2) as in vitro models of gut enterocytes found that the presence of B/P fluid significantly decreased Zn retention and/or transport and resulted in a redistribution of cellular Zn after 1200 min of incubation. These studies show that a substance in B/P fluid can decrease the absorption of Zn and also suggest that dietary Zn and Zn associated with B/P secretions are absorbed from distinct pools. However, the lack of an interactive effect with diet, and the amount of time required to see differences in CACO-2 cells, suggest that differences in absorption are not a major contributor to Zn homeostasis.  相似文献

Symbiosis is a dominant trait in the Platyhelminthes. The Neodermata (Aspidogastrea, Monogenea, Digenea, Udonellidea, Cestoda) are wholly parasitic and even the predominantly free-living Turbellaria have almost 200 species from 35 families living in permanent associations with other animals. In the simplest turbellarian symbioses, ectosymbiotes such as the Temnocephalida, some other Rhabdocoela and a few Tricladida live on the body surfaces or in the branchial chambers of their mainly arthropodan or chelonian hosts. They feed on the same types of prey as their free-living relatives but supplement their diet by opportunistic commensalism. Their digestive physiology and food reserves are the same as in free-living species. The entosymbiotic Umagillidae, Graffillidae, Pterastericolidae, Fecamplidae and Acholadidae live in internal body cavities or body wall derivatives of echinoderms, molluscs or arthropods and show increasing metabolic dependence on their hosts. Patterns of digestive physiology and food storage generally differ markedly from those of ectosymbiotic and free-living species. Some umagillids, in echinoids, feed as entozoic predators on co-symbiotic protozoa, supplemented by opportunistic ingestion of the hosts' ingesta, gut cells or coelomocytes. Others, in holothurians, feed mainly on gut cells, which also provide some digestive enzymes, and to a lesser extent on host ingesta and co-symbiotes. Graffillids, in molluscs, lack endogenous digestive enzymes and rely entirely on those taken in with host ingesta and gut tissues. Pterastericolids, in asteroids, similarly utilise gut tissues both as food and enzyme sources. The climax to metabolic dependence occurs in the Fecamplidae and Acholadidae. The former, in crustacean haemocoels and myzostomid tissues, lack conventional alimentary systems and absorb soluble nutrients through the epidermis. In the latter the only known species lives in the tube feet of its asteroid host, lacks a normal endodermal gut, but has a modified epidermis performing both digestive and absorptive functions. Most of these entosymbiotes show a shift from the lipid storage characteristic of free-living and ectosymbiotic species to the glycogen storage predominating in the Neodermata. In both groups this emphasis on carbohydrate metabolism is often independent of the PO2 of their environment. Both groups also show high fecundity and it is suggested that there is a direct relationship between this and glycogen storage. High fecundity, while clearly of adaptive value in entosymbiotes, is arguably primarily related to the assured food supply conferred by the entosymbiotic habit and thus can be viewed as a consequence of the latter rather than a prerequisite for it. Some entosymbiotic Turbellaria have evolved physiologically active haemoglobins, allowing them to abstract oxygen preferentially from host tissues; some have also evolved facultative glycolytic mechanisms comparable to those of the Cestoda. All these adaptations to ecto- and entosymbiotic life in the Turbellaria exemplify possible pathways to wholly parasitic lifestyles, with total metabolic dependence on the hosts, which may have been followed during the evolution of the Neodermata.  相似文献

Little is known about the relationship between gastric emptying of nutrients regulated by feedback mechanisms and the absorptive capacity of the gut. Therefore, we wanted to elucidate these interrelationships. A 150-cm jejunal segment was perfused (1-8 kcal/min) with three different nutrient solutions (either 60% of energy as carbohydrate, or 60% as protein, or 33.3% of each nutrient). In separate experiments, gastric emptying was measured after administration of three different meals with the same nutrient composition as the perfusion solutions. The jejunal absorption of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and energy demonstrated saturation kinetics. The kinetics differed among the three nutrients; carbohydrates were absorbed at higher rates than fat and protein. Interactions among the nutrients altered the kinetics providing a constant absorption of energy. After meals, the stomach emptied equal amounts of energy despite large variations in meal composition. The available intestinal absorptive capacity for protein was utilized by 96%, whereas that for carbohydrate, fat and energy were utilized only by 46-62%. Besides reserves in the absorptive capacity, the intestine provided reserves in total length available for absorption. The results indicate a close relationship between the energy-dependent absorption of nutrients and the energy-dependent feedback inhibition of gastric emptying.  相似文献

The dynamics of intestinal absorption, blood concentration and distribution of thiamin, biotin, nicotinate, riboflavin, pantothenate, various folates (folic acid, folinic acid, pteroyltriglutamate), vitamins A, E, C, B12, and B6 were monitored in 12 patients by multiple simultaneous sampling of blood obtained by combined catheterization of portal vein, hepatic vein, and femoral artery after vitamin ingestion. All water-soluble vitamins proved elevated after vitamin ingestion principally in portal blood within 10 minutes as compared with hepatic and femoral blood. Elevated vitamin levels in portal blood--compared to hepatic and femoral blood--remained high even after 120 min. indicating that absorption from the gut was still progressing. In contrast, ingestion of the fat-soluble vitamins A and E evoked no elevated vitamin activity in portal blood. Within 10 min. after vitamin ingestion, all folates were converted into reduced and methylated 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-CH3THF) on passage through the gut. At this time, portal blood elevation of 5-CH3THF persisted before its elevation in hepatic or femoral blood. Presumably, the elevation was not due to the flushing of stored 5-CH5THF from tissues but rather of folate conversion to 5-CH3THF upon gut passage. The nutritional habits of 38 randomly selected single aged people with free choice of food have been investigated by the precise weighing method. Blood serum levels of the vitamins A, C, and E and of beta-carotene and biotin were analyzed, and the nutritional status with respect to the vitamins B1, B2, and B6 was examined by the transketolase-test, the glutathione-reductase-test, and the glutamic-acid-oxalo-acetic-transaminase-test. In relation to the desirable daily supply of nutrients and other dietary components the food was deficient in the vitamins B1, and B6 and in magnesium. For women an additional calcium-deficiency was demonstrated. The dietary fat content, however, was found to be high (44% of total calorie intake). The results of the blood analyses suggest an insufficient dietary supply of vitamin B1, partly also of the vitamins B6 and C. The total caloric intake was found to be rather low with respect to the age.  相似文献

Forty-four multiparous and 43 primiparous Holstein cows were used to study the effect of dietary alfalfa silage: grain ratio on digestion, passage of digesta, and energy balance in a complete lactation experiment. Cows were placed on one of five treatments with forage contents from 38.2 to 98.2% (DM basis) during the first 12 wk of lactation. Forage content was increased during wk 13 to 26 of lactation to give diets containing 48.2 to 98.2% forage and again during wk 27 to 44 to give diets containing 68.2 to 98.2% forage. Both DMI and DM digestibilities decreased as proportion of dietary forage increased. The DM digestibilities for multiparous and primiparous cows ranged between 69.3 and 57.3% during early lactation and 64.9 and 55.5% during late lactation. Increased percentage of forage in the diet decreased and then increased (quadratic relationship) the ruminal retention time of La, a marker applied to the alfalfa silage in early and late lactation. Time cows spent eating and ruminating per kilogram of DMI increased as proportion of forage in the diet increased. Cows fed diets with a high proportion of alfalfa silage remained in negative energy balance longer than cows fed high grain diets. Intake of NEL (calculated by either of two methods) minus NEL output (milk, maintenance, and BW change) resulted in net balances of NEL after 36 wk of lactation within 5% of NEL intake and indicated that estimates of the NEL value of feedstuffs used in this experiment were reasonably accurate.  相似文献

Daily outputs of mucin in ileal digesta were estimated in three barrows fed a protein-free diet while administered either saline (SAI) or a complete amino acid mixture (AAI) intravenously. The water soluble-ethanol precipitable fraction of ileal digesta (crude mucin; CM) was used to estimate the composition of mucin in ileal digesta. This fraction exhibited a carbohydrate composition characteristic of mucin and had a high threonine, serine and proline content (40 mol/100 mol). The proportions of soluble gastric and intestinal mucins, approximately 27 and 73%, respectively, were estimated from the N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)/N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) ratio in CM. The daily outputs of soluble mucin, 2.75 and 3.41 g/day from SAI and AAI pigs (p = 0.13), respectively, were determined from the GalNAc outputs in CM, assuming the above contributions of gastric and intestinal mucins. The estimated soluble mucin outputs accounted for more than 99% of the fucose, galactose, GalNAc and GlcNAc in CM. Total mucin outputs in ileal digesta, 5.32 and 5.65 g/day from SAI and AAI Pigs (p = 0.24), respectively, were determined from the total GalNAc output in digesta, assuming soluble and insoluble mucin had similar compositions. Based on these outputs, mucin represented approximately 30, 7 to 22, 15 and 11% of the endogenous threonine, proline, serine and protein, respectively, in ileal digesta. Approximately 74, 76, 100 and 53% of the fucose, galactose GalNAc and GlcNAc, respectively, in ileal digesta from pigs in this study was attributed to mucin. The results from this study demonstrate the importance of mucin as a source of some endogenous amino acids and carbohydrates.  相似文献

At an average of 32 days after a modified Roux-en-y repositioning of rat small intestine, the mucosal mass, mucosal composition, in vivo absorption of galactose and the activity of maltase, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase were measured. In the gut segment with digestive secretions but without food (A) the only change was a decrease of sucrase activity which occurred most probably at the cellular level. In the gut segment with food and gastric juice and a reflux of digestive secretions (B) complex changes took place. An increase in mucosal mass was not accompanied by an increase in galactose absorption. There was a high increase of sucrase activity, a moderate increase of maltase activity and a tendency of the alkaline phosphatase activity to decrease. The changes (increase in mucosal mass and total enzyme activity, but no changes in activity at the cellular level) in the segment exposed to both digestive secretions and food (C) were compatible with a more proximal promotion of a distal gut segment.  相似文献

Faecal concentrations and output of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) were assessed on successive days by gas-liquid chromatography in 24 patients with acute watery diarrhoea. Absorption of water and sodium from the rectum was also measured by a dialysis technique in 17 of these patients and in nine normal subjects in the presence and absence of luminal SCFA. Faecal SCFA concentrations were low on the first day of diarrhoea (mean (SEM) 9.9 (5.8) mmol/kg) and increased to 94.8 (16.4) mmol/kg by the fifth day. Faecal output of SCFA corresponded to these figures. Net water absorption, in the absence of luminal SCFA, was stopped in patients with acute diarrhoea (-59 (81) nl/cm2/min) compared with healthy controls (+322 (63) nl/cm2/min) (p < 0.01). Luminal SCFA restored net water absorption to +184 (67) nl/cm2/min in patients with acute diarrhoea (p < 0.01). Net absorption of sodium decreased in patients with acute diarrhoea in the absence of luminal SCFA, but returned to normal with luminal SCFA. Net secretion of potassium increased in acute diarrhoea, and did not change in the presence of SCFA. Defective absorption from the rectum in acute diarrhoea is reversed by luminal SCFA. The reduction of luminal SCFA in acute diarrhoea treated conventionally may be a factor contributing to colonic dysfunction.  相似文献

The use of nutrients for pharmacotherapy is a recent advance in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders or alterations of gut function and structure. Nutrients may have a direct effect on the gut, or may enhance the response to medications. Alternatively, pharmacologic agents may improve the absorption of nutrients. Potentially, pharmacotherapy may be an adjunct to the traditional approach used in the treatment of compromised patients.  相似文献

External digesta markers (Yb-labelled diets and Co-EDTA) were given orally as a pulse dose to four pairs of Rasa Aragonesa twin ewe lambs, fed on either chopped or ground and pelleted lucerne hay, in order to estimate slow (k1) and fast (k2) rates of passage of liquid and solid phase from faecal marker excretion curves. After the faecal sampling period daily doses of the same markers were infused continuously for 5 d and the animals slaughtered. Concentrations of markers in the different compartments of the gut were determined and used to calculate mean retention times. The results showed that the rumen and the large intestine were the two main mixing compartments of the gut, accounting for more than 95% of total mean retention time. Rates of passage estimated from faecal marker excretion did not accurately represent marker kinetics in the compartments of the gut derived from slaughter data. Accuracy in the estimation of fractional outflow rate from rumen (kR) by k1 was higher for low values of kR whereas k2 consistently overestimated large intestine outflow rate (kLI), especially for high values of kR. The relationship between outflow rates from the main two mixing compartments was important in influencing the accuracy of prediction of faecal estimates.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of digestive disease in poultry involves the cellular events and reactions that result in a deviation from normal structure and function. To a degree, the differentiation of disease and normal in commercial poultry also involves an economic perspective. Factors external to the digestive tract may mimic digestive disease, including reductions in the density of various nutrients and feed refusal. Antinutritional factors, such as certain storage polysaccharides and proteins, are inaccessible to endogenous enzymes and are either indigestible or act as blockers of the digestion of other nutrients. Changes in digestive secretions that result in either excess or deficiency also influence digestive structure and function. Infectious agents and toxins that cause degeneration and necrosis are especially injurious because a series of critical repair events must occur in order to regain function. The consequences range from lethal injury of the host animal to diminished performance. The digestive tract has a large component of lymphoid tissue and impairment of the immune system influences the course of protozoan, bacterial and viral enteric diseases.  相似文献

Poultry litter is composted to reduce odor and pathogens and to improve its quality as a soil amendment. Organic material, e.g., sawdust, is added to increase the C:N ratio to achieve optimum degradation of organic C and retention of N through microbial biomass formation. However, the relative biodegradabilities of the organic material in poultry litter and the amendment are usually not known. Furthermore, it is assumed that as microorganisms metabolize organic compounds and produce CO2, they increase in biomass and, therefore, retain N. In this study, bench-scale compost reactors were used to determine the relative contributions of poultry litter and of the amendment (sawdust) to the biodegradability of a compost mix. Approximately 29% of the volatiles lost from the poultry litter mix came from the sawdust. Fiber analyses revealed that only a small portion of cellulose was degraded. Although microbial subpopulations able to degrade selected macromolecules were present at varying levels, the overall level of microorganisms did not change markedly. Populations capable of degrading bacterial cell walls were present throughout the composting period, and microbiological assays indicated that inorganic nutrients were available to support limited microbial growth. These results suggest that N compounds and inorganic nutrients are recycled, rather than fixed during composting.  相似文献

Safety and efficacy are crucial but separate issues for vitamin and mineral supplements. Misinterpretation of "safe and adequate" to mean "safety limit" would impose restrictions on vitamin and mineral intakes that are not needed to ensure safety. Substantial evidence indicates that intakes greater than the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of certain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, folic acid, vitamin E, selenium, and chromium reduce the risk of certain diseases for some people. Limitation of intakes to the RDAs would preclude reductions in disease risk from these nutrients. The margin of safety between the usual dietary intake and the intake that would produce adverse effects varies greatly among the different nutrients. Very high intakes of vitamins A and D, niacin, pyridoxine, and selenium have produced adverse effects. Many widely discussed putative adverse effects of vitamin C, vitamin E, and trivalent chromium have little factual basis. There is no evidence of adverse effects from beta-carotene supplements except in current heavy smokers.  相似文献

A mixed culture of fungi, enriched from degraded polymeric materials, formed biofilms on coupons of fiber-reinforced polymeric composites (FRPCs). They grew actively in aqueous extracts of the composites under ambient conditions. The data indicate that the fungi utilized the resins or fiber chemical sizing as carbon and energy sources. A progressive decline in impedance from above 10(7) Ohms to below 10(8) Ohms was detected in the inoculated FRPC panels by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) after 179 days of incubation, but not on the sterile controls. The degradation proceeds through an initial ingress of water into the resins, followed by degradation of bonding between fiber surfaces and resins and finally separation of fibers from the resins. At the end of EIS study, the extent of disbonding in the inoculated composite was greater than the control observed by scanning electron microscopy. These results suggest that the composite materials are susceptible to microbial attack by providing nutrients for growth.  相似文献
