The problem of steady two‐dimensional free convective flow of a Walters fluid (model B ′) in a porous medium between a long vertical wavy wall and parallel flat wall in the presence of a heat source is discussed. The channel is divided into two passages by means of a thin, perfectly conductive plane baffle and each stream will have its own pressure gradient and hence the velocity will be individual in each stream. The governing equations of the fluid and the heat transfer have been solved subject to the relevant boundary conditions by assuming that the solution consists of two parts: a mean part and disturbance or perturbed part. Exact solutions are obtained for the mean part and the perturbed part is solved using long wave approximation. Results are presented graphically for the distribution of velocity and temperature fields for varying physical parameters such as Grashof number, wall temperature ratio, porous parameter, heat source/sink parameter, product of non‐dimensional wave number, and space‐coordinate and viscoelastic parameter at different positions of the baffle. The relevant flow and heat transfer characteristics, namely, skin friction and the rate of heat transfer at both walls, has been discussed in detail. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present article, we have investigated the unsteady mixed convection flow of a rotating second‐grade fluid in a rotating cone with time‐dependent angular velocities. Two cases of heat transfer are presented which are known as (i) prescribed wall temperature (PWT) and (ii) prescribed heat flux (PHF). The governing coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are simplified with the help of transformations and non‐dimensional similar and non‐similar variables, and solved analytically with the help of the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of pertinent parameters on the velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction coefficients, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number have been examined through graphs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper looks at heat and mass transfer effects on an unsteady MHD flow of a couple‐stress fluid in a horizontal wavy porous space with travelling thermal waves in the presence of a heat source and viscous dissipation. Initially the temperatures of the walls are maintained at different constant temperatures. The analytical expressions for velocity, temperature, and concentration field are obtained by the regular perturbation technique. The results are presented graphically for various values of emerging dimensionless parameters of the problem and are discussed to show interesting aspects of the solution. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper examines thermal‐diffusion and diffusion‐thermo effects on the fully developed MHD flow of a micropolar fluid through a porous space in a vertical channel with asymmetric wall temperatures and concentrations. The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is adopted to obtain the approximate analytical solution for the velocity, micro‐rotation, temperature, and concentration field. The convergence and the accuracy of the solutions are discussed. The role of pertinent parameters on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the flow are presented graphically. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, effects of Soret and Dufour on free convection heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate embedded in a doubly stratified power‐law fluid‐ saturated non‐Darcy porous medium in the presence of a magnetic field is considered. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations, with the location along the plate as a parameter and then solved numerically. A parametric study of the physical parameters involved in the problem is conducted and a representative set of numerical results is illustrated by insisting on the comparison between pseudo‐plastic, dilatant, and Newtonian fluids. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer of Casson non‐Newtonian fluid from a semi‐infinite vertical plate in the presence of thermal and hydrodynamic slip conditions is analyzed. The plate surface is maintained at a constant temperature. Increasing velocity slip induces acceleration in the flow near the plate surface and the reverse effect further from the surface. Increasing velocity slip consistently enhances temperatures throughout the boundary layer regime. An increase in thermal slip parameter strongly decelerates the flow and also reduces temperatures in the boundary layer regime. An increase in the Casson rheological parameter acts to elevate considerably the skin friction (non‐dimensional wall shear stress) and this effect is pronounced at higher values of tangential coordinate. Temperatures, however, are very slightly decreased with increasing values of Casson rheological parameter. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present article investigates the influence of Dufour and Soret effects on mixed convection heat and mass transfer over a vertical plate in a doubly stratified fluid‐saturated porous medium. The plate is maintained at a uniform and constant wall heat and mass fluxes. The Darcy–Forchheimer model is employed to describe the flow in porous medium. The nonlinear governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are initially transformed into dimensionless forms. The resulting system of nonlinear partial differential equations is then solved numerically by the Keller‐box method. The variation of the dimensionless velocity, temperature, concentration, heat, and mass transfer rates for different values of governing parameters involved in the problem are analyzed and presented graphically. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present article looks at the theoretical analysis of a steady stagnation‐point flow with heat transfer of a third‐order fluid towards a stretching surface. The formulation of the problem has been carried out for a third order fluid and constructed partial differential equations are rehabilitated into ordinary differential equations. The consequential ordinary differential equations are solved analytically using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical illustrations are shown for various parameters involved in the flow equations. Numerical values of skin friction coefficients and heat flux are computed and presented through tables. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluid flow and mass transfer characteristics in an axisymmetric sinusoidal wavy‐walled tube are experimentally investigated in the Reynolds number range of 50 to 1000. Attention is paid to the transitional flow, which is observed in the Reynolds number range of 160 to 200. In the laminar flow regime, wall shear stress and mass transfer rate increase with the slopes of 1 and 1/3, respectively, whereas in the turbulent flow regime they increase with the slopes of 3/2 and 3/5, respectively. In the transitional flow regime they increase dramatically, with a sharp slope. It is found that in this flow regime, laminar‐like motion and turbulent‐like motion alternatively take place at different time intervals. This is quite different from the flow instability for the wavy‐walled channel, where Tollmien‐Schlichting waves are observed. The flow instability in the wavy‐walled tube in the transitional flow regime is considered to be responsible for a significant increase in the wall shear stress and mass transfer rate. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this investigation, the boundary layer flow and heat transfer analysis in a Maxwell fluid over an exponentially continuous moving sheet are studied. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically for a non‐similar solution using a shooting method with the Runge–Kutta algorithm. The purpose of this article is to look into the influence of the Deborah number on the velocity, temperature, and Nusselt number. The obtained results show that an increase in the Deborah number decreases the fluid velocity and boundary layer thickness. On the other hand, it increases the temperature and thermal boundary layer thickness. It is also found that the numerical results are in excellent agreement with the previous existing results for the case of a Newtonian fluid (λ = 0). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three‐dimensional numerical simulations are performed on a plate‐fin heat exchanger (with triangular fins as inserts between the plates) to evaluate the laminar heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics with longitudinal vortex generators (LVGs). The effect with an inline rectangular winglet pair (RWP) with a common‐flow‐down (CFD) configuration is studied. The numerical results indicate that the application of inline LVGs effectively enhances the heat transfer of the channel. The heat transfer further increases with the increase in the Reynolds number from 200 to 500 and angle of attack from β = 15° to 22.5°. The computations are also performed to find the best location for the second RWP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The transient heat transfer in a heat‐generating fin with simultaneous surface convection and radiation is studied numerically for a step change in base temperature. The convection heat transfer coefficient is assumed to be a power law function of the local temperature difference between the fin and its surrounding fluid. The values of the power exponent n are chosen to include simulation of natural convection (laminar and turbulent) and nucleate boiling among other convective heat transfer modes. The fin is assumed to have uniform internal heat generation. The transient response of the fin depends on the convection‐conduction parameter, radiation‐conduction parameter, heat generation parameter, power exponent, and the dimensionless sink temperature. The instantaneous heat transfer characteristics such as the base heat transfer, surface heat loss, and energy stored are reported for a range of values of these parameters. When the internal heat generation exceeds a threshold the fin acts as a heat sink instead of a heat source. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study, the effect of inclination on mixed convection heat transfer and fluid flow in a lid‐driven cavity with a wavy wall is investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The double‐population approach with second‐order accuracy at velocity and temperature fields is used to simulate the curved boundary in the lattice Boltzmann method. The problem is investigated for different Richardson numbers (0.1 ≤ Ri ≤ 10), curve amplitudes (0.05 ≤ A ≤ 0.25), and inclination angles (0 ≤ θ ≤ 180) when the Reynolds number is equal to 100. Results show that the inclination phenomenon has important effects on both flow and temperature fields at high Richardson numbers. It is also found that the inclination loses its role on mixed convection heat transfer from the wavy wall by the increase of the curve amplitude of the wavy wall for all Richardson numbers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The flow pattern and heat transfer in a composite system containing a porous region has received considerable attention due to its importance in many engineering applications. In this study a thermal lattice Boltzmann model with nine velocities, D2Q9, is employed to investigate the fluid flow, heat transfer, and entropy generation inside a channel with a heat‐generating porous block. The effects of the porous block's length, porosity, and the Reynolds number, overflow pattern, heat transfer, and entropy generation were studied. The mentioned parameters have different effects on heat transfer and conjugate phenomena. By increasing the block length, Reynolds number, and porosity the dimensionless entropy generation will reduce. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses the results obtained through a two‐dimensional numerical simulation following a finite volume approach on the forced convection heat transfer for the hydromagnetic flow around a square cylinder at low Reynolds and Hartmann numbers. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid is assumed to take place in a rectangular channel subjected to externally imposed magnetic fields and the cylinder is fixed within the channel. The magnetic fields may be applied either along the streamwise or transverse directions. Simulations are performed for the range of kinetic Reynolds number 10 ≤ Re ≤ 60 with Hartmann number 0 ≤ Ha ≤ 15 and for different thermal Prandtl numbers, Pr = 0.02 (liquid metal), 0.71 (air), and 7 (water) for a blockage ratio β = 0.25. A steady flow can be expected for the above range of conditions. Besides the channel wall, the magnetic field imparts additional stability to the flow as a consequence of which the recirculation region behind the obstacle reduces with increasing magnetic field strength for a particular Re. The critical Hartmann numbers for the complete suppression of flow separation in the case of a transversely applied magnetic field are computed. The rate of heat transfer is found almost invariant at low Re whereas it increases moderately for higher Re with the applied magnetic field. The heat transfer increases in general with the Reynolds number for all Hartmann numbers. Finally, the influence of obstacle shape on the thermohydrodynamic quantities is noted. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study, the effects of Cu and CuO nanoparticles' presence on mixed convection heat transfer in a lid‐driven cavity with a corrugated wall are investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The boundary fitting method with second‐order accuracy at both velocity and temperature fields is used to simulate the curved boundaries in the LBM. The problem is investigated for different Richardson numbers (0.1–10), volume fractions of nanoparticles (0–0.05), curve amplitudes (0.05–0.25), and phase shifts of corrugated wall (0–270) when the Reynolds number is equal to 25. The volume fraction of added nanoparticles to the water‐based fluid is less than 0.05 to make dilute suspensions. Results show that adding nanoparticles enhances the rate of heat transfer. It is found that nanoparticles have significant effects on both fluid flow and heat transfer of the mixed convection, especially for low Richardson numbers. A comparison between Cu and CuO nanoparticles shows the Cu nanoparticles have a better effect on heat transfer enhancement for all tested conditions. The results also represent the effective role of a corrugated wall on the rate of nanofluid heat transfer. It is observed that increasing the wavy wall's amplitude leads to a decrease of the average Nusselt numberfor a high Richardson number. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fully developed flow and heat transfer in a horizontal channel consisting of couple‐stress permeable fluid sandwiched between viscous fluid layers is investigated analytically. The channel walls are maintained at two different constant temperatures. The transport properties of the fluids in all regions are assumed to be constant. The governing equations are linear ordinary differential equations and hence closed form solutions are obtained. Effects of physical parameters such as viscosity ratio, thermal conductivity ratio, Eckert number, and Prandtl number on the flow are reported. An interesting and new approach is incorporated to analyze the flow for strong, weak, and comparable porosity with couple‐stress parameter. The variation of rate of heat transfer for different values of couple stress parameter and porosity is also discussed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we investigate the nonlinear steady‐state boundary‐layer flow, heat and mass transfer of an incompressible Jeffrey non‐Newtonian fluid past a vertical porous plate. The transformed conservation equations are solved numerically subject to physically appropriate boundary conditions using a versatile, implicit finite‐difference technique. The numerical code is validated with previous studies. The influence of a number of emerging non‐dimensional parameters, namely, Deborah number (De), Prandtl number (Pr), ratio of relaxation to retardation times (λ), Schmidt number (Sc), and dimensionless tangential coordinate (ξ) on velocity, temperature, and concentration evolution in the boundary layer regime are examined in detail. Furthermore, the effects of these parameters on surface heat transfer rate, mass transfer rate, and local skin friction are also investigated. It is found that the velocity is reduced with increasing Deborah number whereas temperature and concentration are enhanced. Increasing λ enhances the velocity but reduces the temperature and concentration. The heat transfer rate and mass transfer rates are found to be depressed with increasing Deborah number, De, and enhanced with increasing λ. Local skin friction is found to be decreased with a rise in Deborah number whereas it is elevated with increasing λ. And an increasing Schmidt number decreases the velocity and concentration but increases temperature. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of viscous dissipation and solutal dispersion on free convection about an isothermal vertical cone with a fixed apex half angle, pointing downwards in a power‐law fluid‐saturated non‐Darcy porous medium are analyzed. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into partial differential equations using non‐similarity transformation. The resulting equations are solved numerically using an accurate local non‐similarity method. The accuracy of the numerical results is validated by a quantitative comparison of the heat and mass transfer rates with previously published results for a special case and the results are found to be in good agreement. The effects of viscous dissipation, solutal dispersion, and/or buoyancy ratio on the velocity, temperature, and concentration field as well as on the heat and mass transfer rates are illustrated, by insisting on the comparison between pseudo‐plastic, dilatant, and Newtonian fluids. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
