This paper examines thermal‐diffusion and diffusion‐thermo effects on the fully developed MHD flow of a micropolar fluid through a porous space in a vertical channel with asymmetric wall temperatures and concentrations. The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is adopted to obtain the approximate analytical solution for the velocity, micro‐rotation, temperature, and concentration field. The convergence and the accuracy of the solutions are discussed. The role of pertinent parameters on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the flow are presented graphically. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, effects of Soret and Dufour on free convection heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate embedded in a doubly stratified power‐law fluid‐ saturated non‐Darcy porous medium in the presence of a magnetic field is considered. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations, with the location along the plate as a parameter and then solved numerically. A parametric study of the physical parameters involved in the problem is conducted and a representative set of numerical results is illustrated by insisting on the comparison between pseudo‐plastic, dilatant, and Newtonian fluids. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present article investigates the influence of Dufour and Soret effects on mixed convection heat and mass transfer over a vertical plate in a doubly stratified fluid‐saturated porous medium. The plate is maintained at a uniform and constant wall heat and mass fluxes. The Darcy–Forchheimer model is employed to describe the flow in porous medium. The nonlinear governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are initially transformed into dimensionless forms. The resulting system of nonlinear partial differential equations is then solved numerically by the Keller‐box method. The variation of the dimensionless velocity, temperature, concentration, heat, and mass transfer rates for different values of governing parameters involved in the problem are analyzed and presented graphically. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The problem of a two‐dimensional free convective mass transfer flow of an incompressible, viscous, and electrically conducting fluid past a continuously moving semi‐infinite vertical porous plate with large suction in the presence of a magnetic field applied normal to the plate is studied. The non‐linear partial differential equations governing the flow have been transformed by a set of similarity transformations into a system of non‐linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting system of the similarity equations are solved analytically adopting the perturbation technique. The expressions for the velocity field, temperature field, concentration field, induced magnetic field, drag coefficient, and the coefficient of the rate of heat and mass transfer at the plate are obtained. The results are discussed in details through graphs and tables to observe the effect of various physical parameters involved in the problem. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the effects of viscous dissipation on mixed convection heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate embedded in a nanofluid‐saturated non‐Darcy porous medium have been investigated. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The new far‐field thermal boundary condition that has been recently developed is employed to properly account for the effect of viscous dissipation in mixed convective transport in a porous medium. The nonlinear governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are transformed to a set of nonsimilar ordinary differential equations and the resulting system of equations is then solved numerically by an improved implicit finite‐difference method. The effect of the physical parameters on the flow, heat transfer, and nanoparticle concentration characteristics of the model are presented through graphs and the salient features are discussed. As expected, a significant improvement in the heat transfer coefficient is noticed because of the consideration of the nanofluid in the porous medium. With the increase in the value of the viscous dissipation parameter, a reduction in the non‐dimensional heat transfer coefficient is noted while an increase in the nanoparticle mass transfer coefficient is seen. Further, an increase in the mixed convection parameter lowered both the heat and nanoparticle mass transfer rates. Moreover, the increase in the Brownian motion parameter enhanced the nanoparticle mass transfer rate but it reduced the heat transfer rate in the boundary layer. A similar trend is also found with the thermophoresis parameter. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of viscous dissipation and solutal dispersion on free convection about an isothermal vertical cone with a fixed apex half angle, pointing downwards in a power‐law fluid‐saturated non‐Darcy porous medium are analyzed. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into partial differential equations using non‐similarity transformation. The resulting equations are solved numerically using an accurate local non‐similarity method. The accuracy of the numerical results is validated by a quantitative comparison of the heat and mass transfer rates with previously published results for a special case and the results are found to be in good agreement. The effects of viscous dissipation, solutal dispersion, and/or buoyancy ratio on the velocity, temperature, and concentration field as well as on the heat and mass transfer rates are illustrated, by insisting on the comparison between pseudo‐plastic, dilatant, and Newtonian fluids. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study examines the double diffusive convection of a sparsely packed micropolar fluid‐saturated porous medium by using a linear stability analysis. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model is employed for the porous fluid layer. The stability criterion is sought analytically with the simple free‐free, iso‐thermal, and iso‐solutal boundary conditions. The dependence of stationary or oscillatory convection on the porous parameter, Lewis number, solutal Rayleigh number, and parameters involved in micropolar fluids is drawn and discussed. The results show that the critical wave number is found to be insensitive to the variation of governing parameters except for the porous parameter. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heat and mass transfer in the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid along a vertical isothermal unsteady stretching sheet in the presence of heat generation and a transverse magnetic field is investigated. The governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and species concentration are transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and solved numerically by using the Runge–Kutta fourth‐order method with shooting technique. The velocity, temperature, and concentration distributions are discussed numerically and shown through graphs. The expressions of skin‐friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number at the sheet are discussed numerically and their variations are presented through tables. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper looks at heat and mass transfer effects on an unsteady MHD flow of a couple‐stress fluid in a horizontal wavy porous space with travelling thermal waves in the presence of a heat source and viscous dissipation. Initially the temperatures of the walls are maintained at different constant temperatures. The analytical expressions for velocity, temperature, and concentration field are obtained by the regular perturbation technique. The results are presented graphically for various values of emerging dimensionless parameters of the problem and are discussed to show interesting aspects of the solution. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The problem of steady two‐dimensional free convective flow of a Walters fluid (model B ′) in a porous medium between a long vertical wavy wall and parallel flat wall in the presence of a heat source is discussed. The channel is divided into two passages by means of a thin, perfectly conductive plane baffle and each stream will have its own pressure gradient and hence the velocity will be individual in each stream. The governing equations of the fluid and the heat transfer have been solved subject to the relevant boundary conditions by assuming that the solution consists of two parts: a mean part and disturbance or perturbed part. Exact solutions are obtained for the mean part and the perturbed part is solved using long wave approximation. Results are presented graphically for the distribution of velocity and temperature fields for varying physical parameters such as Grashof number, wall temperature ratio, porous parameter, heat source/sink parameter, product of non‐dimensional wave number, and space‐coordinate and viscoelastic parameter at different positions of the baffle. The relevant flow and heat transfer characteristics, namely, skin friction and the rate of heat transfer at both walls, has been discussed in detail. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, the heat transfer analysis is investigated for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow in a vertical wavy porous space with one region filled with couple‐stress fluid and the other region with a viscous fluid in the presence of a temperature‐dependent heat source. The flow is generated by the periodic thermal waves prescribed at the wavy walls of the channel and the transport properties of both fluids are assumed constant. The resulting dimensionless coupled nonlinear equations are assumed into a mean (zeroth‐order) part and a perturbed part, using amplitude as a small parameter. The perturbed quantities are obtained by using the regular perturbation method. The results are graphically presented and the role of pertinent parameters on the heat transfer characteristics of the fluid flow is discussed. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study analysis has been performed for thermosolutal convection in a fluid‐porous composite medium, consisting of a fluid‐saturated porous medium followed by an overlaying clean medium. The fluid‐porous composite medium is subjected to both a horizontal solutal and a thermal gradient. Top and bottom walls of the fluid‐porous composite medium are assumed to be impermeable and adiabatic. The Darcy‐Brinkman‐Forchheimer model is used to study the flow through the fluid‐porous composite medium. A single domain approach is taken into consideration for numerical simulation. The solution is done by control volume integration. A comprehensive analysis has been performed for various pertinent parameters to delineate their behavior. Results of the transport phenomenon have been provided in graphical and tabular form, for the complete understanding of the complex phenomenon. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on the research in turbine blade super cooling techniques, experiments were carried out to investigate the thermo‐driving heat transfer phenomenon in a new cooling configuration filled with porous medium in a centrifugal force field. Moreover, the heat transfer effectiveness of the configuration was compared to one with no porous medium. The results showed that the thermo‐driving heat transfer effectiveness of the configuration filled with porous medium could be enhanced by increasing the rotating speed, heat flux, and cooling air speed. Meanwhile, the heat transfer effectiveness of the configuration was strengthened with the installation of porous medium. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article is concerned with the steady laminar magnetohydrodynamic boundary‐layer flow past a stretching surface with uniform free stream and internal heat generation or absorption in an electrically conducting fluid. A constant magnetic field is applied in the transverse direction. A uniform free stream of constant velocity and temperature is passed over the sheet. The effects of free convection and internal heat generation or absorption are also considered. The governing boundary layer and temperature equations for this problem are first transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity variables, and then solved by a new analytical method and numerical method, by using a fourth‐order Runge–Kutta and shooting method. Velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically. It is shown that the differential transform method solutions are only valid for small values of independent variables but the results obtained by the DTM‐Padé are valid for the entire solution domain with high accuracy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Experimental investigation of two‐phase laminar forced convection in a single porous tube heat exchanger is presented. The effect of Darcy, Reynolds, and Prandtl numbers on the performance of this heat exchanger during the condensation process of carbon dioxide at different test conditions were investigated. Gravel sand with different porosities is used as a porous medium. The flow in the porous medium is modeled using the Brinkman–Forchheimer‐extended Darcy model. Parametric studies are also conducted to evaluate the effects of porosity and Reynolds and Prandtl numbers on the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor. A dimensionless performance parameter is developed in order to be used in evaluating the porous tube heat exchanger based on both the heat transfer enhancement and the associated pressure drop. The study covers a wide range of inlet pressure (Pin), mass flow rate (), porosity of gravel sand (ε), and Darcy number (Da) which ranged: 34.5 ≤ Pin ≤ 43 bars, 8 * 10? 5 ≤ ≤ 16 * 10? 5 kg/s, 34.9% ≤ ε ≤ 44.5%, 1.6 * 10? 6 ≤ Da ≤ 5 * 10? 6, respectively. The study predicted the combined effect of the Reynolds number, Darcy number, porosity, and Prandtl number on the heat transfer and pressure drop of carbon dioxide during the condensation process in a porous medium. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The stability of a thin layer of viscoelastic fluid flowing through a porous medium down a non‐uniformly heated inclined plane with a constant temperature gradient along the plane is considered. The film flow system is influenced by gravity, mean surface tension, thermocapillary forces, viscoelastic forces, porosity, and permeability of porous medium. We seek a solution of the stability problem in a series in small wave numbers, and the obtained results, when the plane is heated in the downstream direction, show that the Marangoni, Galileo, and Biot numbers, porosity, and permeability of the porous medium have dual roles in the stability of the flow system, while the viscoelastic parameter and angle of inclination have stabilizing effects, and the Prandtl number has a destabilizing effect. The effects of these physical parameters are also discussed in the case when the plane is cooled in the downstream direction, and we found that their effects are opposite to those of the previous case. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The onset of Darcy‐Brinkman convection in a binary viscoelastic fluid‐saturated sparsely packed porous layer with an internal heat source is studied using both linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The Oldroyd‐B model is employed to describe the rheological behavior of binary fluid. An extended form of the Darcy‐Oldroyd law incorporating Brinkman's correction and time derivative is used to describe the flow through a porous layer. The onset criterion for stationary, oscillatory, and finite amplitude convection is derived analytically. There is a competition between the processes of thermal diffusion, solute diffusion, and viscoelasticity that causes the convection to set in through an oscillatory mode rather than a stationary mode. The effect of internal Rayleigh number, relaxation and retardation parameters, solute Rayleigh number, Darcy number, Darcy‐Prandtl number, and Lewis number on the stability of a system is investigated and is shown graphically. The nonlinear theory based on the truncated representation of the Fourier series method is used to find heat and mass transfer. The transient behavior of the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers is obtained using numerical methods. Some known results are recovered for the particular cases of the present study. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, the hydro‐thermal behavior of a ferrofluid flow (kerosene and 4 vol% Fe3O4) in a vertical tube in the presence of different magnetic field gradients using a two‐phase Euler–Lagrange model and control volume technique has been reported. Two cases for the magnetic field gradients have been considered to affect the mixed convection of the ferrofluid: non‐uniform axial negative and positive field gradients. Unlike our previous studies instead of uniform nanoparticle distribution within the flow, it has been considered as non‐uniform (maximum concentration profile is at the flow centerline). Based on the obtained results in this case, the velocity profiles in the negative magnetic field gradients are more affected than our previous studies. Also the time variations of the Nusselt number and skin friction factor have been presented. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
