Students are using the Internet as a primary source of information when researching topics for reports, presentations, or research. Because of the vast amount of data currently available, students need assistance developing an approach to gather this information. Without a proper plan on how to obtain information, they will waste countless hours, and become very frustrated at the process. This paper describes several methods for searching for technical information on the Internet, as related to both electrical engineering and electrical and computer engineering technology (ECET). These methods were presented to students in several ECET classes at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The students were then required to develop presentations on technical topics within their discipline, using several of the sites described in this paper. This paper also suggests a hierarchy in using these various methods, depending on the type of search required. While the initial concept in developing these techniques was to present a method for student information gathering on the Internet, the author has used many of these techniques for class lectures, as well as research topics. Therefore, the techniques presented in this paper are also pertinent to faculty research and teaching.  相似文献

Alternatives in the application of the Internet are applied to power engineering education. Because the student perception of power engineering is often that this is an old technology, new ways to effectively present the challenges, and the opportunities as well, are needed. The Internet and innovative graphic and textural materials are suggested to effectively present the case for power engineering as a valuable career. This is suggested to build on student interest in these computer technologies. New exercises are needed to stimulate interest in power engineering, especially providing links to the other areas of electrical engineering such as computers or controls. While de-regulation has revitalized many technical challenges in power system engineering, power faculty members need updated resources to interest students in power engineering as a career. This paper describes a case study developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU). This exercise provides an educational opportunity for electrical engineering students at the sophomore/junior level to expand their knowledge about power systems in general, and more specifically power system blackout restoration. Besides offering explanations of concepts, this case study uses the dynamic environment of HTML to help create links for more detailed and often more visual representations for key concepts. The end goals for the students are (1) to complete open-ended exercises to see how they can immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge, and (2) an introduction to advanced power system subjects  相似文献

The goal of engineering education is to train students to enter the practice of engineering. To accomplish this, there must be a faculty which is itself well-educated and adept at the practice of engineering, as well as a sympathetic environment, adequately equipped with appropriate facilities. Today's rapid technological progress renders earlier developments obsolete. The engineer, therefore, must be alert to adapt to his purposes the latest and most powerful advances of scientific knowledge. The failure of the faculty to keep up this pace has resulted in an inability to cope with the implication of scientific advances and a lack of communication between the educator and his counterpart in industry and development laboratories. By default, the scientist has had to step in to assume engineering responsibilities; thus the training of our engineers all too often has become a function of industry and development centers. If industry and science continue to take over this responsibility, we need a searching examination to determine the cause of our inadequacy. Our faculties and institutions must maintain an adequate and identifiable program of engineering education, or our role will become precarious and ambiguous. At the heart of the problem are the opportunities, or lack of them, provided for engineering faculties to continue their educational and professional development. A total program of faculty education and professional development will include: 1) research and development investigations, 2) consulting, 3) internal educational activities, and 4) external educational activities.  相似文献

This paper deals with the application of web-based technologies to power engineering education in an interactive student/mentor environment. The modern teaching/learning concepts and new technologies to support these concepts have been developed. This project incorporates web-based tools, including Internet, videoconferencing, and educational intelligent system modules for power engineering education. Different student learning styles are adapted for power engineering applications. The proposed interactive learning environment allows the mentor and students to best utilize the facilities for effective teaching and learning.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the use of the World Wide Web in courses and course units dealing with engineering ethics and/or the social implications of engineering. Course materials and other resources for use by students and faculty are discussed and a new website, the Web Clearinghouse for Engineering and Computing Ethics, is introduced. Course materials and resources found on the Web include: ethics centers that focus on engineering ethics and/or other fields of professional ethics; case studies and other instructional materials; course syllabi; codes of engineering ethics; ethics pages of professional societies; papers, articles and reports with relevance to engineering and computer ethics; on-line ethics journals and newsletters; and primary source archives. The Web lends itself for use as a place to post a “living” course syllabus, with hypertext links to on- and off-site material containing course information and assignments as well as information on content and pedagogical techniques of interest to faculty who are developing and teaching courses in engineering and computing ethics. By illustrating in real-time the interconnectedness of information from engineering, the humanities and the social sciences, the Web serves as a tangible metaphor for the interdisciplinary approach necessary for a complete examination of ethics in engineering  相似文献

An interactive multimedia educational manual on the Internet through the World Wide Web for commercial optical fiber telecommunications equipment is described. The Telecommunications Laboratory Manual is a vehicle for enhancing engineering education with realistic laboratory or virtual laboratory experience. The manual provides a brief system tutorial, operating instructions, online help, and multimedia experimental demonstrations. It incorporates block diagrams, photographic images, and hypertext links that are mouse clickable, allowing users to access documents or links describing components or processes in any order. An experimental section guides students through laboratory experiences, demonstrates selected equipment characteristics, and provides for direct instructor contact through e-mail. Other remote resources on the Internet are linked to create a global multimedia library. This paper presents the “GENAS” simulation program which has been developed and used for educational purposes. The program is developed based on a combination of animation and Monte Carlo concepts to help students interactively and visually understand the random behavior and reliability performance of large electric power systems as a function of time. The “GENAS” program dynamically produces color moving pictures of the system as well as the numerical values of system reliability indices. The Internet provides a new environment for developing a variety of applications for educational and research purposes. This paper presents the implementation of a web-based laboratory experiment on a coupled tank apparatus, a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system. The web-based laboratory has been developed to serve students and staff in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The laboratory is an educational tool for teaching students the basic principles and methodology in performing a series of experiments on a coupled tank apparatus at any time and from any location through the Internet. With the capability to implement strategies for manual, proportional integral derivative (PID), general state-space, and fuzzy logic control, the laboratory also provides a platform for research staff to test control algorithms. Video conferencing has been used to provide audio and video feedback, with a camera mounted on a movable platform so that the user can control both the zooming and viewing angle  相似文献

This paper describes a laboratory equipped for the teaching of advanced courses in computer engineering, computer science, information systems, and software engineering. Other related work areas include computer vision, real-time systems, programming languages, and computer architectures. The laboratory has been built around a digital model railroad platform controlled by a client-server system using an object-oriented language. The characteristics of this laboratory are suitable for implementing Web activities for educational purposes. The paper also includes an overview of the system in which most of these topics have been considered and a summary of the relationship with the most relevant international curricula in computing.  相似文献

Laboratory oriented instruction for engineering students continues to be a difficult aspect of engineering education. The decreased amount of laboratory instruction in the curriculum, the decreased presence of professorial rank faculty in laboratory instruction, the dwindling level of student interest, and the inadequate resources applied to laboratory oriented instruction are some of the symptoms of the broader, deeper malaise found with this segment of engineering education. The roles the undergraduate engineering laboratory are expected to play are important in determining the future of the engineering laboratory. These roles are usually stated in terms of how the laboratory experience serves the student. To these roles another is added: the continuing professional development of the faculty. This added role gives great emphasis to laboratories concerned with new and developing topics in the discipline. One possible scenario for the engineering instructional laboratory of the future may require a lower level of resources than a more traditional approach, but demands even more in terms of new, properly maintained equipment, competent support staff, and direct involvement of faculty.  相似文献

This paper describes a unique electrical engineering laboratory course. This laboratory is an example of industry-university cooperation in engineering education. The organization and operation of the course is outlined and explained. The educational benefits derived from such cooperation between industry and the university are briefly detailed. These benefits are extended to the students, the university, the faculty, and the participating industry. This paper provides the framework and challenge to industry from which other laboratory experiences can be conceived and developed.  相似文献
