The thermal behaviour of polystyrene composites reinforced with short sisal fibres was studied by means of thermogravimetric and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The thermal stability of the composites was found to be higher than that of sisal fibre and the PS matrix. The effects of fibre loading, fibre length, fibre orientation and fibre modification on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated. Fibre modifications were carried out by benzoylation, polystyrene maleic anhydride coating and acetylation of the fibre and the treatments improved the fibre-matrix adhesion. PS/sisal composites are thermally more stable than unreinforced PS and sisal fibre. The addition of 10% fibre considerably increases the modulus but the increase is found to level off at higher fibre loadings. The Tg values of the composites are lower than that of unreinforced PS and may be attributed to the presence of some residual solvents in the composites entrapped during the composite preparation. The treated-fibre composites show better properties than those of untreated-fibre composites. The Arrhenius relationship has been used to calculate the activation energy of the glass transition of the composites. A master curve is constructed based on time-temperature superposition principle.  相似文献

Rapidly increasing packaging density of electronic devices puts forward higher requirements for thermal conductivity of glass fibers reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites, which are commonly used as substrates in printed circuit board. Interface between fillers and polymer matrix has long been playing an important role in affecting thermal conductivity. In this paper, the effect of interfacial state on the thermal conductivity of functionalized Al2O3 filled GFRP composites was evaluated. The results indicated that amino groups-Al2O3 was demonstrated to be effective filler to fabricate thermally conductive GFPR composite (1.07 W/m K), compared with epoxy group and graphene oxide functionalized Al2O3. It was determined that the strong adhesion at the interface and homogeneous dispersion of filler particles were the key factors. Moreover, the effect of interfacial state on dielectric and thermomechanical properties of GFRP composites was also discussed. This research provides an efficient way to develop high-performance GFRP composites with high thermal conductivity for integrated circuit packaging applications.  相似文献

The effect of polymer chain structure, addition of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) to initiate grafting onto the fibre, and different fibre loadings on the morphology and thermal properties of polyethylene/sisal fibre composites was investigated. The gel content results suggest both crosslinking between the polyethylene chains and grafting onto the sisal fibres. There were significant differences in gel contents between the composites because of the differences in the polyethylene molecular structures. The SEM micrographs of the samples show clear evidence of grafting, particularly in the case of the LDPE and LLDPE composites. The presence of the sisal fibres gave rise to thermally less stable composites compared to the neat matrices, whereas marginal differences in stability were observed between the untreated and peroxide treated composites. The DSC results show interesting trends in terms of the influence of fibre content and dicumyl peroxide treatment on the crystallisation behaviour of the composites.  相似文献

Mechanical and thermal properties of non-crimp glass fiber reinforced clay/epoxy nanocomposites were investigated. Clay/epoxy nanocomposite systems were prepared to use as the matrix material for composite laminates. X-ray diffraction results obtained from natural and modified clays indicated that intergallery spacing of the layered clay increases with surface treatment. Tensile tests indicated that clay loading has minor effect on the tensile properties. Flexural properties of laminates were improved by clay addition due to the improved interface between glass fibers and epoxy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the modified clay particles affected the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the nanocomposites. Incorporation of surface treated clay particles increased the dynamic mechanical properties of nanocomposite laminates. It was found that the flame resistance of composites was improved significantly by clay addition into the epoxy matrix.  相似文献

Semi-analytical Mori-Tanaka methods and numerical models for studying the overall thermal conduction behavior of metal matrix composites reinforced by diamond particles are presented, special emphasis being put on the effects of finite interfacial conductances. Good agreement between the simulation approaches is obtained and the influence of particle shapes and homogeneous vs. inhomogeneous interfacial conductances on local and global responses is studied. Analogous methods are applied to modeling the elastic and thermoelastoplastic behavior of diamond reinforced metals.  相似文献

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites became more attractive due to their light weight, high specific strength, and environmental concern. However, some limitations such as low modulus, poor moisture resistance were reported. This study aimed to investigate the effect of glass fiber hybridization on the physical properties of sisal–polypropylene composites. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the compatibility between the fibers and polypropylene. Incorporating glass fiber into the sisal–polypropylene composites enhanced tensile, flexural, and impact strength without having significant effect on tensile and flexural moduli. In addition, adding glass fiber improved thermal properties and water resistance of the composites.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity of hollow glass bead (HGB)-filled polypropylene (PP) composites was estimated using the thermal conductivity equation of inorganic hollow microsphere-filled polymer composites published in the previous paper. The estimations were compared with the measured data of the PP composites filled with two kinds of HGB with different size (the mean diameter was respectively 35 μm and 70 μm). The results showed that the predictions of the thermal conductivity were in good agreement with the measured data except to individual data points. Furthermore, both the estimated and measured thermal conductivity decreased roughly linearly with increasing the HGB volume fraction when the HGB volume fraction was less than 20%; the influence of the particle diameter on the thermal conductivity was insignificant.  相似文献

In this research, magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and zinc borate, as flame retardants, were incorporated into sisal/PP composites. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene was also used as a compatibilizer. Adding flame retardants into sisal/PP composites reduced burning rate and increased thermal stability of the composites. No synergistic effect was observed when both magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate were incorporated in the sisal/PP composites. In addition, the sisal/PP composites exhibited insignificant difference of shear viscosity at high shear rate indicating that types of flame retardants used in this study had no impact on the processability of the composites. Good distribution of flame retardants and sisal fiber in PP matrix was also observed. All PP composites had lower impact strength than the neat PP. However, the sisal/PP composites with the addition of Mg(OH)2 and zinc borate exhibited comparable tensile and flexural properties to the sisal/PP composites without adding those flame retardants. Therefore, the addition of Mg(OH)2 and zinc borate enhanced flame retardancy of sisal/PP composites without sacrificing their mechanical properties.  相似文献

Polymeric composites with relatively high thermal conductivity, high dielectric permittivity, and a low dissipation factor are obtained in the present study. Three types of core-shell-structured aluminum (Al) particles are incorporated in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) by melt-mixing and hot-pressing processes. The morphological, thermal, and dielectric properties of the composites are characterized using thermal analysis, a scanning electron microscope, and a dielectric analyzer. The results indicate that the Al particles decrease the degree of crystallinity of PVDF, and that the particle size and shape of the filler affect the thermal conductivity and dielectric properties of Al/PVDF. No variation in the dissipation factor is observed up to 60 wt.% Al. Thermal conductivity and dielectric permittivity values as high as 1.65 W/m K and 230, respectively, as well as a low dissipation factor of 0.25 at 0.1 Hz, are realized for the composites with 80 wt.% spherical Al.  相似文献

Dimer fatty acid-based polyamides (DAPA) are reinforced with cellulose fibres (CF) from 5 to 20 wt.%. Thermal, morphological, dynamic mechanical and mechanical properties of the corresponding biocomposites (DAPAC) are investigated. They exhibit a high increase in glass transition temperature (Tg) and a decrease in the crystallisation temperature and crystallinity degree. This can be attributed to carbonyl (DAPA) and hydroxyl (CP) groups’ interactions. These hydrogen bonds reduce the polymer mobility. For instance, the dynamic mechanical spectra of these biocomposites reveal an increase in the stiffness and higher thermal–mechanical stability. Morphological observations reveal a moderate interfacial adhesion between the fibres and the matrix. With the increase of the fibre content, tensile tests show a high increase in Young modulus and yield stress, and a decrease of elongation at break. Predicted modulus results based on micromechanical models, Voigt and Reuss bounds and Halpin–Tsai approaches, are compared with the experimental values. They show that the Halpin–Tsai model can be used to quantify the mechanical properties for DAPA/CF biocomposites.  相似文献

Thermal conductivity of boron nitride reinforced polyethylene composites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The thermal conductivity of boron nitride (BN) particulates reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites was investigated under a special dispersion state of BN particles in HDPE, i.e., BN particles surrounding HDPE particles. The effects of BN content, particle size of HDPE and temperature on the thermal conductivity of the composites were discussed. The results indicate that the special dispersion of BN in matrix provides the composites with high thermal conductivity; moreover, the thermal conductivity of composites is higher for the larger size HDPE than for the smaller size one. The thermal conductivity increases with increasing filler content, and significantly deviates the predictions from the theoretic models. It is found also that the combined use of BN particles and alumina short fiber obtains higher thermal conductivity of composites compared to the BN particles used alone.  相似文献

A flame retardant efficiency of flame retardants; ammonium polyphosphate (APP), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), zinc borate (Zb), and combination of APP with Mg(OH)2 and Zb in sisal fiber/polypropylene (PP) composites was investigated using a horizontal burning test and a vertical burning test. In addition, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the compatibility in the system; i.e. PP-fiber and PP-flame retardants. Thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the PP composites were also studied. Adding the flame retardants resulted in improved flame retardancy and thermal stability of the PP composites without deterioration of their mechanical properties. APP and combination of APP with Zb effectively enhanced flame retardancy of the PP composites. No synergistic effect was observed when APP was used in combination with Mg(OH)2. SEM micrographs of PP composites revealed good distribution of flame retardants in PP matrix and good adhesion between sisal fiber and PP matrix.  相似文献

Aramid fibers reinforced silica aerogel composites (AF/aerogels) for thermal insulation were prepared successfully under ambient pressure drying. The microstructure showed that the aramid fibers were inlaid in the aerogel matrix, acting as the supporting skeletons, to strengthen the aerogel matrix. FTIR revealed AF/aerogels was physical combination between aramid fibers and aerogel matrix without chemical bonds. The as prepared AF/aerogels possessed extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.0227 ± 0.0007 W m−1 K−1 with the fiber content ranging from 1.5% to 6.6%. Due to the softness, low density and remarkable mechanical strength of aramid fibers and the layered structure of the fiber distribution, the AF/aerogels presented nice elasticity and flexibility. TG–DSC indicated the thermal stability reaching approximately 290 °C, can meet the general usage conditions, which was mainly depended on the pure silica aerogels. From mentioned above, AF/aerogels present huge application prospects in heat preservation field, especially in piping insulation.  相似文献

Dense BaSi2Al2O8 (BAS) and Ba0.75Sr0.25Si2Al2O8 (BSAS) glass–ceramic matrix composites reinforced with carbon short fibers (Csf) were fabricated by hot pressing technique. The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, and three-point bend tests. The carbon fibers had a good chemical compatibility with the glass–ceramic matrices and can effectively reinforce the BAS (or BSAS) glass–ceramic because of associated toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection, fiber bridging and pullout effects. Doping of BAS with 25 mol% SrSi2Al2O8 (SAS) can accelerate the hexacelsian to celsian transformation and result in the formation of pure monoclinic celsian in Csf/BSAS composites, which can avoid the undesirable reversible hexacelsian to orthorhombic transformation at 300 °C and reduce the thermal expansion mismatch between the fiber and matrix.  相似文献

This paper presents a preliminary investigation on the effects of organically modified iron-montmorillonite (Fe-OMT) and zinc borate (ZnB) on thermal degradation behaviors and flame retardancy of melamine polyphosphate (MPP) flame-retarded glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (GFPA6). The samples were characterized using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 tests, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared coupled with the thermogravimetric analyzer (TG-FTIR) and Microscale Combustion Calorimeter (MCC) measurements. The residue after LOI test was also analyzed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. A substitution of a certain fraction of MPP with ZnB or Fe-OMT can significantly improve the UL-94 rating of GFPA6/MPP composites from no rating to V0 rating, exhibiting excellent flame retardacny. Based on the investigations, different flame retardant mechanisms were proposed for the two effective flame-retardant formulations.  相似文献

Poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) was used to modify diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) type epoxy resin cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone (DDS) and the modified epoxy resin was used as the matrix for fibre reinforced composites (FRPs) in order to get improved mechanical and thermal properties. E-glass fibre was used as the fibre reinforcement. The morphology, dynamic mechanical and thermal characteristics of the systems were analyzed. Morphological analysis revealed heterogeneous dispersed morphology. There was good adhesion between the matrix polymer and the glass fibre. The dynamic moduli, mechanical loss and damping behaviour as a function of temperature of the systems were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). DMA studies showed that DDS cured epoxy resin/SAN/glass fibre composite systems have two Tgs corresponding to epoxy rich and SAN rich phases. The effect of thermoplastic modification and fibre loading on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were also analyzed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed the superior thermal stability of composite system.  相似文献

The long term performance of composite materials is highly desired for their expanding application range. Tuning the interphase properties has been proven to be a practical way to enhance the performance of composites. In this study, short glass fibre (GF) reinforced polypropylenes (PPs) with improved hygrothermal durability were obtained by incorporating NaBF4 into the sizing and thus the interphases of GF/PP composites. Detailed investigations were performed on the surface properties of sized GFs and the mechanical properties of virgin and aged composites. It was found that the retention in both ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact toughness of aged composites monotonically increased with increasing NaBF4 content. The improvement in hygrothermal durability was related to the enhanced fibre/matrix adhesion strength induced by the presence of NaBF4 as indentified by fracture surface analysis using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and single fibre pull-out test.  相似文献

Experimental investigations on flax and glass fabrics reinforced epoxy specimens, i.e. FFRE and GFRE, submitted to fatigue tests are presented in this paper. Samples having [0/90]3S and [±45]3S stacking sequences, with similar fibre volume fractions have been tested under tension–tension fatigue loading. The specific stress-number of cycles to failure (SN) curves, show that for the [0/90]3S specimens, FFRE have lower fatigue endurance than GFRE, but the [±45]3S FFRE specimens offer better specific fatigue endurance than similar GFRE, in the studied life range (<2 × 106). Overall, the three-stage stiffness degradation is observed in all cases except for [0/90]3S FFRE specimens, which present a stiffening phenomenon of around 2–3% which could be related to the straightening of the microfibrils.  相似文献

The effects of small amount of organically modified Clay (Clay) in polyamide 6 (PA6) on fire performance and thermal mechanical properties of Clay/PA6/woven glass fibres (GF) laminates are investigated by cone calorimeter test, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and heat distort temperature (HDT) measurement. The mechanical properties, such as tensile and flexural properties of Clay/PA6 composites and Clay/PA6/GF laminates were also measured. Up to 3 wt.% Clay in a Clay/PA6/GF laminate with fibre volume fraction of 30 vol.% delayed the ignition time and peak heat release rate (PHRR) time by 55% and 118%, respectively, even though the value of the PHRR or the HDT was not significantly affected. 2 wt.% Clay increased flexural modulus and strength of the Clay/PA6/GF laminate by 10% and 16%, respectively, but more Clay did not increase the mechanical properties accordingly. Small amount of Clay does not affect glass fibre dominated properties, such as HDT, but do affect matrix dominated properties, and significantly affect the fire performance in terms of delaying ignition time and PHRR time. Optimization of laminate making process could benefit from additions of more Clay, therefore further improve fire performance and enhance mechanical properties.  相似文献

Nanoparticle reinforcement of the matrix in laminates has been recently explored to improve mechanical properties, particularly the interlaminar strength. This study analyses the fatigue behaviour of nanoclay and multiwalled carbon nanotubes enhanced glass/epoxy laminates. The matrix used was the epoxy resin Biresin® CR120, combined with the hardener CH120-3. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) 98% and organo-montmorillonite Nanomer I30 E nanoclay were used. Composites plates were manufactured by moulding in vacuum. Fatigue tests were performed under constant amplitude, both under tension–tension and three points bending loadings. The fatigue results show that composites with small amounts of nanoparticles addition into the matrix have bending fatigue strength similar to the obtained for the neat glass fibre reinforced epoxy matrix composite. On the contrary, for higher percentages of nanoclays or carbon nanotubes addition the fatigue strength tend to decrease caused by poor nanoparticles dispersion and formation of agglomerates. Tensile fatigue strength is only marginally affected by the addition of small amount of particles. The fatigue ratio in tension–tension loading increases with the addition of nanoclays and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, suggesting that both nanoparticles can act as barriers to fatigue crack propagation.  相似文献
