An important aspect of the analysis of auditory “scenes” relates to the perceptual organization of sound sequences into auditory “streams.” In this study, we adapted two auditory perception tasks, used in recent human psychophysical studies, to obtain behavioral measures of auditory streaming in ferrets (Mustela putorius). One task involved the detection of shifts in the frequency of tones within an alternating tone sequence. The other task involved the detection of a stream of regularly repeating target tones embedded within a randomly varying multitone background. In both tasks, performance was measured as a function of various stimulus parameters, which previous psychophysical studies in humans have shown to influence auditory streaming. Ferret performance in the two tasks was found to vary as a function of these parameters in a way that is qualitatively consistent with the human data. These results suggest that auditory streaming occurs in ferrets, and that the two tasks described here may provide a valuable tool in future behavioral and neurophysiological studies of the phenomenon. Canaries (Serinus canarius) of the Belgian waterslager strain from two different colonies were trained with operant techniques for audiometric testing. For both young and old birds, absolute thresholds in the middle- to high-frequency region of the audiogram were between 30 and 40 dB (SPL) higher than those of other song birds, including canaries of other strains. Thus the Belgian waterslager canary, selectively bred for loud, low-pitched song, has also developed poor high-frequency hearing. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Blackbirds and pigeons were trained to detect tones in quiet and in broadband noise by using positive-reinforcement techniques. In Experiment 1, thresholds in noise were obtained in blackbirds as a function of both tone frequency and noise intensity for a pulsed noise masker (noise gated on and off with tone). For blackbirds, critical ratios (the ratio of the power of the just-detectable tone in noise to the power of the noise masker) obtained in pulsed noise showed no consistent relation to tone frequency. For pigeons, on the other hand, critical ratios obtained in continuous noise increased by about 3 dB/octave across their range of hearing, being similar to known critical ratio functions for cats and humans. In Experiment 2, critical ratios in blackbirds obtained with both continuous noise and pulsed noise were compared. Blackbird critical ratios were more stable in continuous noise and averaged 4 dB lower than critical ratios in pulsed noise. The blackbird critical ratio function obtained with continuous noise was similar to the known critical ratio function of another avian species, the parakeet. Thus, small birds appear to have atypical critical ratio functions, compared with pigeons and other vertebrates. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

We conducted 2 studies to determine the importance of several brain systems for remembering odorants in a go/no-go delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMTS) task. In Experiment 1, impairments were observed for lesions of pyriform cortex or (to a lesser extent) the lateral internal medullary lamina of thalamus. Lesions of the entorhinal cortex or the mediodorsal (MDn) or the paracentral and centrolateral (PC-CL) thalamic nuclei did not affect DNMTS. In Experiment 2, an impairment comparable to the pyriform lesion was observed for a lesion of the intralaminar nuclei (PC-CL plus the central medial nucleus) but not for a larger lesion of MDn. None of the lesions in either study affected the ability to learn a 2-choice odor discrimination using go/no-go procedures comparable with the DNMTS task. Compared the frequency resolving power of 3 male budgerigar birds and 3 humans on several nonsimultaneous masking procedures in which one pure tone was used to mask another. Similar patterns of frequency selectivity were found for all 3 masking procedures (forward, backward, and combined forward/backward) for both species. Budgerigars showed considerably greater frequency resolving power on all 3 procedures than humans. Budgerigars also showed differences in frequency resolving power across masking conditions, but human Ss did not. Results indicate that the budgerigar auditory system may be even more highly tuned than was previously thought and suggest fundamental differences between the mechanisms of frequency selectivity of birds and humans. The role of the amygdala in dyadic social interactions of adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was assessed after bilateral ibotenic acid lesions. Social, nonsocial, and spatial behaviors of amygdalectomized and control monkeys were assessed in 3 dyadic experiments: constrained, unconstrained, and round robin. Lesions produced extensive bilateral damage to the amygdala. Across all experiments, the amygdalectomized monkeys demonstrated increased social affiliation, decreased anxiety, and increased confidence compared with control monkeys, particularly during early encounters. Normal subjects also demonstrated increased social affiliation toward the amygdalectomized subjects. These results indicate that amygdala lesions in adult monkeys lead to a decrease in the species-normal reluctance to immediately engage a novel conspecific in social behavior. The altered behavior of the amygdalectomized monkeys may have induced the increased social interactions from their normal companions. This is contrary to the idea that amygdalectomy produces a decrease in social interaction and increased aggression from conspecifics. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

The acoustic startle response (ASR) was used to investigate the effects of auditory cortical lesions on a brain stem-mediated auditory behavior. The ASRs were obtained longitudinally from young adult C57BL/6J mice before bilateral ablation of auditory cortex, 1 day after ablation, and 1 month later. Control mice received lesions of nonauditory cortex. For some mice, averaged brain stem-evoked responses (ABR) were obtained, and these indicated no effects of lesions on auditory sensitivity. One month after surgery, mice with auditory cortex ablations were statistically indistinguishable from controls on all suprathreshold measures of ASR. However, 1 day after ablation of auditory cortex, experimental animals (but not controls) exhibited a change in ASR amplitude (but not threshold or latency). When a noise burst of 80 dB SPL was used to elicit the ASR, the amplitude was diminished, but with a 110 dB stimulus, amplitude was enhanced. The findings can be interpreted in one of two ways: temporary interference with modulation of the ASR normally performed by auditory cortex; or a general effect of auditory cortex ablation on brain stem auditory circuits not specific to the ASR. In any event, if auditory cortex plays a modulatory role with regard to the ASR, it is apparently nonessential and/or readily compensated for after ablation. 相似文献

Two monkeys were trained on an auditory-visual (AV) delayed matching-to-sample (DMS) task with auditory cues serving as sample stimuli and visual cues serving as comparison stimuli. To determine whether the monkeys were remembering auditory or visual information during the delay period, auditory and visual interference were presented following the sample stimulus. Auditory interference had little effect on AV DMS performance. In contrast, visual interference severely impaired AV DMS performance, indicating that the monkeys were remembering visual information during the delay period. This finding may reflect a predisposition of monkeys toward remembering information via their dominant visual modality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Gonadectomized male and female ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) given either testosterone propionate (TP) or oil vehicle preferred to investigate the side of a test cage previously soiled by a breeding male or female as opposed to a clean side. Male and female ferrets receiving TP showed more urogenital wiping than oil-treated animals in either side of the test cage. In a 2nd experiment, ferrets treated sequentially with TP, oil, and estradiol benzoate (EB) were given simultaneous access to sides of a test cage previously soiled by either a breeding female or male. Either EB or TP treatment of females and TP treatment of males facilitated the investigation of odors of opposite-sex ferrets. Females given TP and males given either TP or EB showed increased urogenital wiping in both sides of the test cage. Sex steroids modulate scent investigation and marking in adult ferrets in a sexually differentiated fashion. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

We investigated the absolute auditory sensitivities of three monkey species (Cercopithecus aethiops, C. neglectus, and Macaca fuscata) and humans (Homo sapiens). Results indicated that species-typical variation exists in these primates. Vervets, which have the smallest interaural distance of the species that we tested, exhibited the greatest high-frequency sensitivity. This result is consistent with Masterton, Heffner, and Ravizza's (1969) observations that head size and high-frequency acuity are inversely correlated in mammals. Vervets were also the most sensitive in the middle frequency range. Furthermore, we found that de Brazza's monkeys, though they produce a specialized, low-pitched boom call, did not show the enhanced low-frequency sensitivity that Brown and Waser (1984) showed for blue monkeys (C. mitis), a species with a similar sound. This discrepancy may be related to differences in the acoustics of the respective habitats of these animals or in the way their boom calls are used. The acuity of Japanese monkeys was found to closely resemble that of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta) that were tested in previous studies. Finally, humans tested in the same apparatus exhibited normative sensitivities. These subjects responded more readily to low frequencies than did the monkeys but rapidly became less sensitive in the high ranges. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Used 2-choice and 3-choice tests to evaluate the effects of bilateral auditory cortical lesions on pure-tone sound localization by 10 male albino rats. Both tests required that Ss approach a distant sound source to obtain water reinforcement. Stimuli were single noise and tone bursts, 65 msec in duration including 20-msec rise and fall times. Tone frequencies were 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 kHz adjusted to 40 dB (sound pressure level) above the S's absolute threshold. Five Ss were tested in the 2-choice situation following bilateral ablation of auditory cortex. Some reduction in performance was observed relative to normals, but impairments were not severe. Similar results were obtained for 2 brain-damaged Ss tested in the 3-choice situation. Thus, the ability to localize sounds in space remained intact after complete destruction of auditory cortex, and there was no indication of a frequency-dependent deficit. Findings are considered in relation to the more severe deficits observed in other mammals after lesions of the auditory cortex. The development of head orientation to auditory stimulation was examined in rat pups at Postnatal Days 8, 11, 14, 17, and 20. The animals were tested in a quiet environment with single bursts of 65 dB (SPL) broad-band noise. A reflexive head turn toward the sound was first seen on Postnatal Day 14 and subsequently on Days 17 and 20. This result demonstrates that the onset of directional auditory responses occurred between Day 11 and Day 14. The role of binaural cues in early sound orientation was examined in 17-day-old pups with monaural ligation of the external meatus. These animals were unable to localize a sound source and consistently turned toward the side of the unligated ear regardless of the position of the stimulus. Thus binaural cues were shown to be important for head orientation to sound in early development. In a separate study, head orientation to high and low frequency tone pips was examined. Directional responses were first seen on Day 12 for a 16-kHz tone and Day 14 for a 2-kHz tone. These results indicate an earlier onset for orientation to high frequency sounds in the rat. Monkey auditory memory was tested with increasing list lengths of 4, 6, 8, and 10 sounds. Five-hundred and twenty environmental sounds of 3-s duration were used. In Experiment 1, the monkeys initiated each list by touching the center speaker. They touched 1 of 2 side speakers to indicate whether a single test sound (presented from both side speakers simultaneously) was or was not in the list. The serial-position functions showed prominent primacy effects (good first-item memory) and recency effects (good last-item memory). Experiment 2 repeated the procedure without the list-initiation response and with a variable intertrial interval. The results of both experiments were similar and are discussed in relation to theories and hypotheses of serial-position effects. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Normal infant monkeys and infant monkeys with neonatal damage to either the medial temporal lobe or the inferior temporal visual area were assessed in dyadic social interactions at 2 and 6 months of age. Unlike the normal infant monkeys, which developed strong affiliative bonds and little or no behavioral disturbances, the lesioned monkeys (each of which was observed with an unoperated control) exhibited socioemotional abnormalities and aberrant behaviors. The socioemotional changes predominated at 6 months of age and were particularly severe in monkeys with medial temporal lesions. In both the pattern and time course, the socioemotional deficits produced by the neonatal medial temporal lesions bear a striking resemblance to the behavioral syndrome in children with autism. Further analysis of these lesion-induced abnormalities in nonhuman primates may therefore provide insight into this debilitating human developmental disorder. 12 male rhesus monkeys received bilateral stereotaxic lesions centered in the basolateral, lateral, and dorsal amygdala, or the temporal white matter lying adjacent to the lateral amygdala. Ss were compared with 4 others with control operations. Controls then received total amygdaloid lesions (AMX). AMX Ss exhibited the typical amygdaloid syndrome of hypoemotionality, meat eating, coprophagia, and excessive exploration. In contrast, Ss with subtotal amygdaloid lesions would not eat meat or feces, though they were more willing than controls to investigate inanimate objects. Extreme emotional changes after total amygdalectomy were found only in the S with the largest subtotal lesion. Only Ss that were hypoemotional showed a deficit in learning successive reversals of an object discrimination. This suggests that both the hypoemotionality and the successive reversal deficit arise from the same underlying dysfunction. (31 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Four monkeys were trained to discriminate between "tunes" that differed primarily in their temporal structure, or frequency envelopes. The conclusion drawn from a variety of transfer tests was that they learned the discrimination on the basis of local features of the tunes rather than on their temporal patterns. Subsequent comparisons of retention based on auditory–visual and visual–visual matching tasks suggested that this deficiency was not due to a truncated auditory short-term store. Indeed, when previous experience with remembering visual and auditory stimuli was comparable, short-term memory also seemed comparable in the 2 modalities. It is noted that the ability to discriminate and employ the frequency contours of tonal patterns may be related to the capacity for acoustically based language, and that in the human infant, these skills seem to develop in parallel. Results from 6 experiments suggest perinatal visual experience interferes with postnatal auditory responsiveness in bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Light- or dark-reared control chicks responded similarly to bobwhite maternal Calls A or B following hatching. Light-reared chicks that experienced 10 min/hr of Call A or B from hatching until testing preferred the familiar call at Days 2-4, but dark-reared chicks preferred the familiar call at all ages. Increased amounts of exposure to maternal calls during postnatal Days 1-2 led to auditory responsiveness deficits in light-reared chicks. Similarly, embryos exposed to 10 min/hr of prenatal visual cues required 48 hr of postnatal Call A or B exposure to demonstrate auditory discrimination. These findings highlight the linkages between developing auditory and visual systems during infancy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

The authors examined auditory distance perception using a go/no-go operant discrimination task in the laboratory. They taught male black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to discriminate degraded (far) from undegraded (near) versions of male chickadee songs and female zebra finch calls, showing for the 1st time that males can discriminate distance cues in heterospecific vocalizations and in female calls. Chickadees learned faster than zebra finches, and both species learned to discriminate chickadee songs faster than zebra finch calls. Chickadees more than zebra finches attended to amplitude in tests pitting it against other distance cues, demonstrating that amplitude is a potentially useful cue for estimating distance from vocalizations. This study examined the effects of specific types of prenatal auditory stimulation on the auditory learning capacity of bobwhite embryos (Colinus virginianus) incubated in either communal or isolation conditions. Results revealed that socially incubated embryos could learn an individual bobwhite maternal call, whereas embryos denied physical and tactile stimulation as a result of isolation incubation failed to demonstrate prenatal auditory learning of the maternal call. In contrast, embryos exposed to bobwhite chick contentment calls in the period prior to hatching demonstrated prenatal auditory learning, whether they were incubated socially or in isolation. Socially incubated and isolation-incubated embryos exposed to bobwhite chick distress calls failed to learn the individual maternal call, indicating that the type of sensory stimulation the developing organism encounters prenatally is important in fostering normal perceptual learning ability. One group of bobwhite quail embryos (Colinus virginianus) was exposed to 10 min/hr of bobwhite chick contentment calls immediately followed by 10 min/hr of bobwhite chick distress calls. A 2nd group of embryos was exposed to the same auditory stimulation but in the opposite order of presentation. Postnatal testing revealed that chicks exposed prenatally to the bobwhite chick contentment call and distress call (in either order of presentation) continued to respond to maternal auditory cues into later stages of postnatal development compared with unmanipulated chicks. Chicks exposed prenatally to the contentment call followed by the distress call showed an accelerated pattern of visual responsiveness to maternal cues, whereas chicks exposed prenatally to the distress call followed by the contentment call showed deficits in the normal pattern of perceptual visual responsiveness, suggesting that the auditory stimulation precocial avian embryos encounter 1st is influential in directing early intersensory development.
