The allelopathic potential of eight aquatic plants associated with wild rice was investigated using lettuce and wild rice seedling bioassays. Rhizome aqueous extracts of Scirpus acutus, Potamogeton natans, Nymphaea odorata, Nuphar variegatum; shoot extract of Eleocharis smallii; whole plant extract of Myriophyllum verticillatum; and leaf extract of P. natans significantly reduced the root length of lettuce and wild rice seedlings. The lettuce seedling bioassay was more sensitive than the wild rice bioassay. Shoot growth was less affected than the root growth. Water extract of sediments associated with the aquatic plants had little growth inhibitory effect on wild rice. Our study did not yield any conclusive evidence that the wild rice-associated aquatic plants have allelopathic effects on wild rice. We emphasize the use of target species as a bioassay material in allelopathic studies. Further investigation on allelopathic effects of lake sediments associated with the neighboring plants of wild rice is necessary to evaluate their ecological significance.  相似文献

Hydroxamic Acid Content and Toxicity of Rye at Selected Growth Stages   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rye (Secale cereale L.) is an important cover crop that provides many benefits to cropping systems including weed and pest suppression resulting from allelopathic substances. Hydroxamic acids have been identified as allelopathic compounds in rye. This research was conducted to improve the methodology for quantifying hydroxamic acids and to determine the relationship between hydroxamic acid content and phytotoxicity of extracts of rye root and shoot tissue harvested at selected growth stages. Detection limits for an LC/MS-MS method for analysis of hydroxamic acids from crude aqueous extracts were better than have been reported previously. (2R)-2-β-d-Glucopyranosyloxy-4-hydroxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIBOA-G), 2,4-dihydroxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIBOA), benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (BOA), and the methoxy-substituted form of these compounds, (2R)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA glucose), 2,4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-(2H)-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA), and 6-methoxy-benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (MBOA), were all detected in rye tissue. DIBOA and BOA were prevalent in shoot tissue, whereas the methoxy-substituted compounds, DIMBOA glucose and MBOA, were prevalent in root tissue. Total hydroxamic acid concentration in rye tissue generally declined with age. Aqueous crude extracts of rye shoot tissue were more toxic than extracts of root tissue to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) root length. Extracts of rye seedlings (Feekes growth stage 2) were most phytotoxic, but there was no pattern to the phytotoxicity of extracts of rye sampled at growth stages 4 to 10.5.4, and no correlation of hydroxamic acid content and phytotoxicity (I50 values). Analysis of dose–response model slope coefficients indicated a lack of parallelism among models for rye extracts from different growth stages, suggesting that phytotoxicity may be attributed to compounds with different modes of action at different stages. Hydroxamic acids may account for the phytoxicity of extracts derived from rye at early growth stages, but other compounds are probably responsible in later growth stages.  相似文献

The concept that some crop plants may be allelopathic to common weeds of agricultural lands is receiving greater attention as an alternative weed control strategy. Several crops showing promise are: grain and forage species such as barley (Hordeum), oat (A vena), fescue (Festuca), and sorghum (Sorghum), and the agronomic species of corn (Zea) and sunflower (Helianthus). Among the problems that hinder the conclusive demonstration of allelopathic effects of crop plants are the loss of that capacity through selection and the variability among cultivars. Recent studies to evaluate the allelopathic potential of crop plants have shown that several sunflower varieties inhibit the germination and growth of associated weeds and to a greater extent than found in several biotypes of native sunflower. Aqueous extracts of dried sunflower and rape tissue inhibited or stimulated germination and growth of weeds, and the response depended upon the source of extract, the extract concentration, and the weed species tested. The validity of bioassay results was tested in a 5-year field study with sunflower and oat grown in rotation. Weed density increased in all plots but the extent of increase was significantly less in plots of sunflower than in control plots. The use of crop plants with increased allelochemical production could limit the need for conventional herbicides to early season application with late season control provided by the crop.  相似文献

A screening was conducted to study the allelopathic potential of Australian-held accessions of Triticum speltoides. Of 26 accessions, four were found to inhibit root growth in the indicator species, lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The methanol leaf extracts of these accessions significantly reduced the root length of wild oat (Avena spp.). In all but one case, alellopathic accessions contained higher amounts of DIMBOA than did nonallelopathic accessions. Since some variation in allelopathic response was detected within lines, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to estimate genetic diversity between and within the allelopathic accessions of Triticum speltoides L. The average genetic similarity between all possible pairs of selected accessions was found to be 55% and ranged from 44% to 88%. Comparison of DNA extracted from different single seedlings within the same accession revealed significant intraaccession genetic diversity (4–24%), although this was much less than that observed between accessions tested. This intraaccession diversity has significant implications for the selection of T. speltoides accessions in breeding or screening programs.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate biomass production, tissue phytotoxicity, and allelochemical content of rye (Secale cereale L.) shoots grown in three fertility regimes (low, medium or high) in the greenhouse. Wheeler rye or a polyculture of rye and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) grown with high fertility produced the greatest biomass (78.7 and 82.7 g), with the lowest root-to-shoot ratio (0.22 and 0.43) produced in the high-fertility treatments. The polyculture treatment grown with low fertility had a greater proportion of hairy vetch (18%) than when grown with high fertility (6%). Rye shoot residue phototoxicity was affected by fertility regime. Radicle elongation of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and barnyardgrass [Enchinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. I was inhibited by rye shoot residues in a modified Parker bioassay. Rye shoot residue grown with low fertility was less inhibitory to cress radicle elongation than rye residue from the medium- or high-fertility regimes. Extracts of dried rye shoots grown with high fertility were less inhibitory than extracts from other fertility regimes. The concentrations of ether extracts of rye causing 50% inhibition (I50) of cress radicle elongation were between 125 and 276 µg/ml for greenhouse-grown and 60 and 138 µg/ml for the field-grown rye shoots. The major phytotoxic compounds in the rye shoot extracts were identified as DIBOA and BOA. The concentration of DIBOA in the greenhouse-grown rye shoots ranged between 128 and 423 µg/g while BOA concentration ranged between 2.5 and 31 µg/g. DIBOA and BOA levels were lowest in rye shoots grown with high fertility. Correlations between rye shoot biomass, DIBOA and BOA concentration, and cress barnyardgrass radicle length were significant.  相似文献

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted at the Agricultural and Water Resources Research Center Station, Baghdad, in 1985 and 1986 to investigate the possible allelopathic potential of alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) and its decomposed residues on bladygrass (Imperata cylin-drica L. Beauv.), a noxious weed in Iraq, and to isolate, characterize, and quantify possible allelopathic agents in alfalfa residues and root exudates. Results indicated that decomposed alfalfa roots and their associated soil produced a 51–56% reduction in bladygrass seed germination. Root and shoot length of bladygrass seedlings were reduced by an average of 88%. Decayed and undecayed mixtures of alfalfa roots and soil at 0.0151 (w/w) inhibited bladygrass seedlings reproduced from rhizomes by 30 and 42%. It was found that root exudates of alfalfa seedlings caused significant reduction in shoot and root dry weights of bladygrass seedlings when alfalfa and bladygrass were grown together in nutrient culture. Caffeic, chlorogenic, isochloro-genic,p-coumaric,p-OH-benzoic, and ferulic acids were detected in alfalfa root exudates and residues. The highest amount (126 fig phenolic acids/g soil) of these compounds was found in alfalfa root residues after six months of decomposition in soil.  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments was to study the effects of various experimental procedures and conditions on bioassay sensitivity in allelopathic studies. The following factors were considered: bioassay methods, choice of test species, the effect of osmotic potential on germination and growth of the test species, growth in dark or in light and the effect of concentrating the extracts in vacuo. Extracts from rape and rye were used in the studies to act as allelopathic agents. Ryegrass appeared as the most sensitive test species when grown horizontally on quartz sand, while radish was the most sensitive test species when grown on filter paper in transparent boxes at a 45° angle. Root length was the most sensitive growth variable measured. Percent germination appeared a more sensitive measure than the speed of germination index, S, when germinated seeds were counted after one and two days for radish and ryegrass, respectively. A rise in the osmotic potential affected germination more than root length, and radish appeared more sensitive to a rise in osmotic potential than ryegrass. A confounding of germination and root length inhibition may therefore, give misleading results.  相似文献

Rye residues contribute weed suppression in no-tillage cropping systems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The use of allelopathic cover crops in reduced tillage cropping systems may provide an ecologically sound and environmentally safe management strategy for weed control. Growers often plant winter rye (Secale cereale L.) for increased soil organic matter and soil protection. Spring-planted living rye reduced weed biomass by 93% over plots without rye. Residues of fall-planted/spring-killed rye reduced total weed biomass over bare-ground controls. Rye residues also reduced total weed biomass by 63% when poplar excelsior was used as a control for the mulch effect, suggesting that allelopathy, in addition to the physical effects of the mulch, did contribute to weed control in these systems. In greenhouse studies, rye root leachates reduced tomato dry weight by 25–30%, which is additional evidence that rye is allelopathic to other plant species.Journal Article No. 10712 of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. The allelopathic effects of root exudates ofBidens pilosa L. on seedling growth ofLactuca sativa L.,Phaseolus vulgaris L.,Zea mays L., andSorghum bicolor (L.) Moench were studied using a root exudate recirculating system that allows continuous exposure of crop plants to allelopathic chemicals. This system maintains an undisturbed rhizosphere and eliminates competition and physical contact between the donor and acceptor plants. Comparison of responses to hydrophobic and hydrophilic root exudates is made possible by removal of hydrophobic compounds using XAD-4. Treatments consisted ofB. pilosa, B. pilosa with an Amberlite XAD-4 resin column attached to the donor pot to remove hydrophobic allelochemicals, and a donor pot without weeds.B. pilosa significantly inhibited seedling growth of all crop species tested. The crop species varied in response to the root exudates, withL. sativa being most sensitive. Larger and olderB. pilosa plants caused greater inhibition of seedling growth ofL. sativa andP. vulgaris than did smaller (younger)B. pilosa plants.B. pilosa with XAD-4 caused significantly less inhibition to all crop species, exceptZ. mays, thanB. pilosa without XAD-4, indicating that the hydrophobic exudates played an important role in the allelopathic growth inhibition. Variability in species response toB. pilosa with and without XAD-4 was probably due to differences in sensitivity to hydophobic and hydrophilic allelochemicals.Supported by a grant under USDA Agreement No. 83-CRSR-2-2293. An alternative to the use of synthetic pesticides is to exploit the natural defense chemicals produced by cereals. An important class of allelochemicals is cyclic hydroxamic acids and related benzoxazolinones. A prolonged degradation experiment of the allelochemical compound from rye 2-benzoxazolinone (BOA) was carried out for up to 90 d at 15°C at three different concentration levels, 3, 3000, and 30,000 nmol BOA· g soil–1, respectively, in a sandy loam soil. Two main degradation products, 2-amino-(3H)-phenoxazin-3-one (APO) and 2-acetylamino-(3H)-phenoxazin-3-one (AAPO), were identified and quantified by LC-ESI-MS-MS. The half-life of BOA increased with higher levels of BOA added to the soil. Half-lives of BOA, APO, and AAPO were determined by fitting a single first-order model to the degradation data. Half-life of BOA was determined to be 0.6 d in the 3 nmol BOA g soil–1 treatment. Half-lives of BOA, APO, and AAPO were 3.1, 2.7, and 2.1 d, respectively, in the 3000 nmol BOA· g soil–1 treatment. In the 30,000 nmol BOA· g soil–1 treatment, the half-lives were 31 d for BOA and 45 d for APO. The microbial community structure was not affected by addition of BOA to the soil as investigated by analysis of signature fatty acids. The results suggest that the exploitability of BOA for crop protection is dependent on the existing concentration of BOA in the soil and the timing of incorporation of hydroxamic acid synthesizing crops into the soil.  相似文献

Defined relationships among grain yields, water-use efficiencies (WUE) and nutrient uptake of different genotypes under varied irrigation and nitrogen (N) regimes would be invaluable for optimizing production of corn (Zea mays L.). Our objective was to evaluate these factors for six popular corn hybrids grown in Nebraska. The procedure involved measuring the effects of three supplemental irrigation rates and two N rates on yields, consumptive water use (ET), water-use efficiency, and nutrient uptake of these hybrids in one field experiment. A second field experiment evaluated effects of irrigation timing on the same characteristics of the six hybrids. Soils employed for the field experiments were Sharpsburg sicl, a typic Argiudoll, and Zook sicl, a cumulic Haplaquoll. In addition, two greenhouse experiments measured above-ground and root yields, water use, and nutrient uptake of the six hybrids under limited and high soil moisture levels. From 30–40 percent reductions in grain and stover yields occurred by limiting moisture supply in the greenhouse but with no reduction in root yields. There was only a small benefit to grain and stover yields from the higher soil moisture levels provided in the field experiments because of very favorable rainfall amount and distribution in 1979. Light, frequent irrigation was advantageous to yield and WUE over the same total amount of water applied in larger, less frequent intervals explainable in part by a N use efficiency factor. Genotype B73xMo17 produced significantly higher grain, stover, root and total yields than the other hybrids under all moisture and N regimes. Amounts of water consumed by the six hybrids in the field experiments were similar, but because of higher yields B73xMo17 had the highest WUE values. This hybrid had greater root development in the field and took up disproportionately more P, Ca, S, Fe, Cu, and Zn and less Mn and Cl than the other hybrids suggesting that its superior yielding capacity may be related to efficiency in mobilizing and utilizing certain nutrients.Contribution of the Nebraska Agric Exp Stn, Lincoln, NE as paper No. 7041 Journal Series.  相似文献

The goal of our work was to expand the knowledge about plant stress response to the allelochemical 2(3H)-benzoxazolinone (BOA). We focused on physiological processes that are affected by this secondary metabolite. Physiological and biochemical characteristics of plants exposed to BOA help us to better understand its mode of action and open the gate to the use of allelochemicals as “natural” herbicides. Measurements on photosynthesis, fluorescence, water relations, antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase), ATPases, and lipid peroxidation indicated that a phytotoxic effect follows BOA exposition. This effect was intense enough to interfere with plant growth and development and to produce “induced senescence.” Based on this, we propose a multifaceted mode of action for BOA with effects at different levels and in different parts of the plant.  相似文献

Two phytotoxic compounds [2,4-dihydroxy-1,4(2H)-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA) and 2(3H)-benzoxazolinone (BOA)] were previously isolated and identified in 35-day-old greenhouse-grown rye shoot tissue. Both compounds were also detected by TLC in greenhouse-grown root and fieldgrown shoot tissue. The concentration of DIBOA varied in the tissues, with the greatest quantity detected in greenhouse-grown shoots. DIBOA and BOA were compared with -phenyllactic acid (PLA) and -hydroxybutyric acid (HBA) for activity on seed germination and seedling growth and were consistently more toxic than either compound. Dicot species tested, including lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), were 30% more sensitive than the monocots tested. Of the two benzoxazinone compounds, DIBOA was most toxic to seedling growth. DIBOA and BOA reduced chlorophyll production inChlamydomonas rheinhardtii Dangeard, by 50% at 7.5 × 10–5 M and 1.0 × 10–3 M, respectively. Both DIBOA and BOA inhibited emergence of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli L. Beauv.), cress (Lepidium sativum L.), and lettuce when applied to soil, indicating their potential for allelopathic activity.Journal Article No. 11945 of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

To understand the interference mechanism of the weed, cogongrass,Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv., its effect on nutrient availability and mycoflora of its soil rhizosphere as well as nodule characteristics, root length, and root/shoot ratio of Melilotus parviflora Desf. were investigated. Additionally, the effect of the leachates of leaves and root/rhizome of cogongrass on seed germination and seedling characteristics of radish, mustard, fenugreek, and tomato were examined. Furthermore, to assess the qualitative and quantitative differences in phytochemical components, the leachates and the soils from three sampling sites (with cogongrass and 1.5 m and 3 m away from cogongrass) were analyzed with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a C18 column. No significant difference in nutrient availability was found, but qualitative and quantitative differences in phenolic fractions were recorded in the three sampling sites. Furthermore, of the 19 fungi recorded in the soils, decreases in the number of colonies (per gram of soil) ofAspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, A. candidus, and an increase of A. flavus was recorded in the soils with cogongrass. The inhibition in nodule number, weight, nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction activity), root length, and root/shoot ratio of Melilotus parviflora were noted. Percent seed germination, root and shoot length, fresh and dry weight of seedlings of different seeds were affected by the leachates of leaves and root/rhizome. It was found that root/rhizome leachate was more inhibitory than leaf leachate. However, the inhibition was higher in soil+leaves leachate than soil+root/rhizome leachate. HPLC analysis established that four compounds were contributed by the weed to the soil system even though their relative concentration varies in various leachates. It is surmised that these compounds cause allelopathic inhibition of growth characteristics of seeds tested. Significance of the data vis-a-vis the interference potential of the cogongrass is discussed.  相似文献

Four herbaceous plant species from woodland (clearings),Deschampsia flexuosa, Scrophularia nodosa, Senecio sylvaticus, andChamaenerion angustifolium, were tested for their sensitivity to phenolic acids. Seven commonly occurring phenolic compounds were used in a germination experiment in concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10 mM, i.e., salicylic,p-hydroxybenzoic, syringic, caffeic, vanillic,p-coumaric, and ferulic acids. Germination was delayed rather than inhibited. Radicle elongation was strongly affected; at lower concentrations stimulatory effects were observed, whereas at high concentrations radicle elongation was severely reduced. Salicylic acid was the most effective phenolic compound, whereas caffeic acid caused no effects. Early growth was studied in more detail in a second experiment withDeschampsia flexuosa andSenecio sylvaticus and the phenolic acids, ferulic and p-coumaric acid. Primary root length, number and length of secondary roots, and dry weight were stimulated at 0.01 mM but were inhibited at 10 mM of both compounds. The results are discussed in view of the allelopathic relations between trees and herbaceous understory vegetation.  相似文献

An examination of the phytotoxicity of the water shield,Brasenia schreberi   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Antialgal, antibacterial, and allelopathic properties of the submersed, aquatic, dicotyledonous water shield,Brasenia schreberi Gmelin (Cabombaceae), were examined. Extracts ofB. schreberi were found to inhibit the eukaryotic alga,Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and the prokaryotic alga,Anabena flosaqua, as well as nine different bacteria. Lettuce seedling bioassay showedB. schreberi to be allelopathic. These phytotoxic properties probably contribute to the observed dominance ofB. schreberi in aquatic environments and also make it a promising candidate for allelopathic plant management of aquatic weeds.  相似文献

Bioassay of naturally occurring allelochemicals for phytotoxicity   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The bioassay has been one of the most widely used tests to demonstrate allelopathic activity. Often, claims that a particular plant species inhibits the growth of another are based entirely on the seed germination response to solvent extracts of the suspected allelopathic plant; few of these tests are of value in demonstrating allelopathy under natural conditions. The veracity of the bioassay for evaluating naturally occurring compounds for phytotoxicity depends upon the physiological and biochemical response capacity of the bioassay organism and the mechanism(s) of action of the allelochemicals. The possibility that more than one allelochemical, acting in concert at very low concentrations, may be responsible for an observed allelopathic effect makes it imperative that bioassays be extremely sensitive to chemical growth perturbation agents. Among the many measures of phytotoxicity of allelochemicals, the inhibition (or stimulation) of seed germination, radicle elongation, and/or seedling growth have been the parameters of choice for most investigations. Few of these assays have been selected with the view towards the possible mechanism of the allelopathic effect.  相似文献

The primary objective of this research was to determine if soil extracts could be used directly in bioassays for the detection of allelopathic activity. Here we describe: (1) a way to estimate levels of allelopathic compounds in soil; (2) how pH, solute potential, and/or ion content of extracts may modify the action of allelopathic compounds on germination and radicle and hypocotyl length of crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and ivyleaved morning glory (Ipomoea hederacea L. Jacquin.); and (3) how biological activity of soil extracts may be determined. A water-autoclave extraction procedure was chosen over the immediate-water and 5-hr EDTA extraction procedures, because the autoclave procedure was effective in extracting solution and reversibly bound ferulic acid as well as phenolic acids from wheat debris. The resulting soil extracts were used directly in germination bioassays. A mixture of phenolic acids similar to that obtained from wheat-no-till soils did not affect germination of clover or morning glory and radicle and hypocotyl length of morning glory. The mixture did, however, reduce radicle and hypocotyl length of clover. Individual phenolic acids also did not inhibit germination, but did reduce radicle and hypocotyl length of both species. 6-MBOA (6-methoxy-2,3-benzoxazolinone), a conversion product of 2-o-glucosyl-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one, a hydroxamic acid in living wheat plants, inhibited germination and radicle and hypocotyl length of clover and morning glory. 6-MBOA, however, was not detected in wheat debris, stubble, or soil extracts. Total phenolic acids (FC) in extracts were determined with Folin and Ciocalteu's phenol reagent. Levels of FC in wheat-conventionaltill soil extracts were not related to germination or radicle and hypocotyl length of either species. Levels of FC in wheat-no-till soil extracts were also not related to germination of clover or morning glory, but were inversely related to radicle and hypocotyl length of clover and morning glory. FC values, solute potential, and acidity of wheat-no-till soil extracts appeared to be independent (additive) in action on clover radicle and hypocotyl length. Radicle and hypocotyl length of clover was inversely related to increasing FC and solute potential and directly related to decreasing acidity. Biological activity of extracts was determined best from slopes of radicle and hypocotyl length obtained from bioassays of extract dilutions. Thus, data derived from the water-autoclave extraction procedure, FC analysis, and slope analysis for extract activity in conjunction with data on extract pH and solute potential can be used to estimate allelopathic activity of wheat-no-till soilsThe use of trade names in this publication does not imply endorsement by the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service of products named, or criticism of similar ones not mentioned.  相似文献
