This paper provides an overview of the design requirements for medium-sized wind turbines intended for use in a remote hybrid power system. The recommendations are based on first-hand experience acquired at the University of Massachusetts through the installation, operation, and upgrade of a 250-kW turbine on a mountain top with difficult access in Western Massachusetts. Experience with the operation of this turbine and the design of its control system, together with a long history in the design and analysis of hybrid power systems, has made it possible to extend the work in Western Massachusetts to remote or hybrid power systems in general. The University test site has many attributes of more remote sites and the overall wind turbine installation is typical of one that could power a hybrid wind system. For example, access to the site is limited due to steep terrain, snow, and environmental restrictions. Also, the power lines feeding the turbine exhibit voltage sags and phase imbalance, especially during start-up. This paper is based on the experience gained from the operation of this wind turbine and assesses the requirements for the design and operation of medium to large wind turbines in remote locations. The work summarizes lessons learned relative to: (1) sensors, communication, and control capabilities; (2) grid connection issues; and (3) weather-related problems. The final section of the paper focuses on design requirements to ensure successful installation and the completion of maintenance and repairs at remote sites.  相似文献

Global warming, climate change and the recent global financial crisis have emphasised the need for reducing carbon emissions whilst also ensuring economic feasibility. This study addresses this topic by investigating the technical and economic feasibility of replacing diesel power generation with hybrid wind power systems in remote communities. For this purpose, the economic, technical and environmental characteristics of eight different hybrid wind power systems were established and compared in respect to their performance in the isolated community of French Island (Victoria, Australia). The results obtained in this study demonstrated the economic and environmental superiority of the hybrid wind–diesel–battery system over all other systems studied in this project. This system was found to have the lowest net present cost and cost per kWh among the modelled systems. Furthermore, the results clearly indicated that hybrid wind power systems are, in general, a feasible and preferable alternative to diesel power generation on the French Island. The research methodology and procedure that were developed in this project can be used to investigate and identify the most viable hybrid power system for other remote communities based on their specific environmental, social and economic circumstances.  相似文献

This paper investigates the benefits of sharing a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in a distributed hybrid power system. The PEMFC is usually used as backup power in stationary hybrid power systems; however, in that scenario, it might be working only 2% of the time while incurring 20% of the system expenses. Therefore, this paper examines the potential of sharing a PEMFC among multiple power systems. We develop a distributed hybrid power system that comprises several immovable power stations and a fuel-cell vehicle (FCV). Each power station is equipped with solar panels and batteries, while the FCV contains a PEMFC module and can move among the stations to provide sustainable power as needed. We propose power management strategies and show that the total system costs can be significantly reduced by 10.83% and 17.89% when sharing one FCV between three and twelve power stations, respectively. We also design experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed distributed hybrid power system. In the future, the developed model can be extended to provide further cost reductions by optimizing distributed hybrid power systems with multiple FCVs.  相似文献

This paper proposes an optimal design procedure for a green building equipped with renewable energy, energy storages, and proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). First, we introduce the hybrid power system of the green building and construct a simulation model using Matlab/SimPowerSystem?. The model parameters are tuned so that the system responses can be estimated without extensive experiments in the optimization processes. Second, we define the cost and reliability indexes to optimize the system design using three steps: component selection, component sizing, and power management (PM) adjustment. We further define the safety index to evaluate the system's sustainability under extreme conditions when no renewable energy is available. Last, we apply the proposed procedures to the green building and demonstrate the benefits of the optimal design. The proposed method can be directly applied to develop customized hybrid power systems in the future.  相似文献

Renewable energy sources can produce less carbon than conventional energy sources, which has the significant disadvantage of being intermittent, which triggers a stable storage system. This work focuses on the issues of hydrogen energy storage which can solve the fluctuating output power problem by simulating results on HOMER software. Three combinations of the Solar-Hydrogen system, Wind-Hydrogen system, and Solar-Wind-Hydrogen hybrid system are presented to find the most optimum one. Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for Hybrid System has proven to be the most economical while the Wind Turbine cost 1.476% higher and the Solar Photovoltaics (PV) System costs 108.03% more. LCOE for Hybrid Model is $0.3387, while for Solar System it is $ 0.7046 and for Wind System it is $ 0.3437. These results show that a hydrogen-based energy storage system is viable for the considered.  相似文献

The main objective of the present study is the integration of hydrogen technologies as an energy storage medium in a hybrid power system. The existing power system of the island of Milos, which is based on fossil fuel generators and a small wind park, is assessed in the context of this paper. System level simulation results, from both technical and economic point of view, are presented for the currently existing and the proposed island's hybrid power system. The latter integrates a higher number of wind turbines and hydrogen technologies as energy storage medium, and the two system architectures are being compared taking into account not only technical and economic parameters but also Green House – Gas (GHG) emissions, fossil fuels consumption and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) penetration increase. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis has been performed in order to determine the contribution of hydrogen technologies equipment costs; with the cost of energy produced (COE) being the critical parameter. Results show that COE for the proposed power system is higher than the existing one, but on the other hand GHG emissions and fossil fuel consumption are significantly reduced. In addition, RES penetration increases dramatically and the sensitivity analysis indicates that a further reduction in hydrogen technologies equipment and subsidy on wind turbine costs would make RES & Hydrogen-based systems economically competitive to the existing power system of the island.  相似文献

Standalone diesel generating system utilized in remote areas has long been practiced in Malaysia. Due to highly fluctuating diesel price, such a system is seemed to be uneconomical, especially in the long run if the supply of electricity for rural areas solely depends on such diesel generating system. This paper would analyze the potential use of hybrid photovoltaic (PV)/diesel energy system in remote locations. National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) HOMER software was used to perform the techno-economic feasibility of hybrid PV/diesel energy system. The investigation demonstrated the impact of PV penetration and battery storage on energy production, cost of energy and number of operational hours of diesel generators for the given hybrid configurations. Emphasis has also been placed on percentage fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions of different hybrid systems. At the end of this paper, suitability of utilizing hybrid PV/diesel energy system over standalone diesel system would be discussed mainly based on different solar irradiances and diesel prices.  相似文献

In most isolated sites situated in south Algeria, the diesel generators are the major source of electrical energy. Indeed, the power supply of these remote regions still poses order problems (technical, economical and ecological). The electricity produced with the help of diesel generators is very expensive and responsible for CO2 emission. These isolated sites have significant wind energy potential. Hence, the use of twinning wind-diesel is widely recommended, especially to reduce operating deficits. The objective of this paper is to study the global modeling of a hybrid system which compounds wind turbine generator, diesel generator and storage system. This model is based on the control strategy to optimize the functioning of the hybrid system and to consolidate the gains to provide proper management of energy sources (wind, diesel, battery) depending on the load curve of the proposed site. The management is controlled by a controller which ensures the opening/closing of different power switches according to meteorological conditions (wind speed, air mass, temperature, etc).  相似文献

This paper analyses the technical and economic feasibility of using a hybrid renewable energy source for a typical telecom load in the state of Qatar. The hybrid system considered in this work consists of a solar photovoltaic with storage battery and diesel generator set. For this particular hybrid system, the meteorological data of solar irradiance in Doha city (latitude 25.15 ° North and longitude 51.33 ° East) are taken from NASA surface meteorology and solar energy websites. The solar irradiance in Doha is 5.33?kWh/m2/day on an annual average scale. The data are also taken through the study of load consumption of Qatar telecommunication hybrid power system. The system is designed and its techno-economic analysis is carried out using the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electrical Renewable software. The results show both technical and economic viability of replacing the conventional DG sets with the proposed renewable energy source.  相似文献

This paper discusses the uptake potential for a wind–diesel production incentive designed specifically for Canadian northern and remote communities. In spite of having over 300 remote communities with extremely high electricity costs, Canada has had little success in developing remote wind energy projects. Most of Canada’s large-scale wind power has been developed as a direct result of a Federal production incentive implemented in 2002. Using this incentive structure as a successful model, this paper explores how an incentive tailored to remote wind power could be deployed. Micro-power simulations were done to demonstrate that the production incentive designed by the Canadian Wind Energy Association would cost on average $4.7 $Cdn million and could be expected to result in 14.5 MW of wind energy projects in remote villages in Canada over a 10 year period, saving 11.5 $Cdn million dollars in diesel costs annually, displacing 7600 tonnes of CO2eq emissions and 9.6 million litres of diesel fuel every year.  相似文献

The Mexican territory has a large potential for renewable energy development, such as geothermal, hydro, biofuels, wind and solar. Thus, a 2.5 kW hybrid power system (solar, wind and hydrogen) was designed and installed to meet the power demand for a stand-alone application at the University of Zacatecas. The hybrid unit integrates three power energy sources –a photovoltaic system (PV), a micro-wind turbine (WT), a prototype of a unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC) and energy storage devices (batteries)– in addition to their interaction methodology. The main contribution of this work is the URFC integration to a hybrid power system for the production of H2 (water electrolyzer mode) and energy (fuel cell mode). These three energy technologies were connected in parallel, synchronized to the energy storage system and finally coupled to a power conversion module. To achieve the best performance and energy management, an energy management and control strategy was developed to the properly operation of the power plant. A meteorological station that has wireless sensors for the temperature, the humidity, the solar radiation and the wind speed provides the necessary information (in real time) to the monitor and control software, which computes and executes the short and mid–term decisions about the energy management and the data storage for future analysis.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical study of how wind power can be complemented by hydropower. A conceptual framework is provided for a hybrid power station that produces constant power output without the intermittent fluctuations inherent when using wind power. Two hypothetical facilities are considered as case studies. One of them is a hydropower plant located on the “Presidente Benito Juarez” dam in Jalapa del Marques, Oaxaca, Mexico. The other hypothetical facility is a wind farm located near “La Venta”, an area in Juchitan, Oaxaca, Mexico. The wind–hydro-power system is a combined wind and hydro power plant in a region that is rich in both resources. The model shows that the hybrid plant could provide close to 20 MW of firm power to the electrical distribution system. On a techno-economic basis, we obtain the levelized production cost of the hybrid system. Taking into account two different discount rates of 7% and 10%, figures for levelized production cost are developed.  相似文献

A demonstrative study for the wind and solar hybrid power system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In March 1995, a small scale wind and solar hybrid power system was installed at Ashikaga Institute of Technology. Until now, the authors have acquired the data of the output of the hybrid power plant along with wind speed, wind direction, and the solar radiation, in order to demonstrate a complementary relationship between solar energy and wind energy. After nine months operation of the system, the authors confirmed that there exists a complementary relationship between solar energy and wind energy. We also found, however, that the power output by wind does not have much prospect compared to that by solar cell especially in summer season in Ashikaga area.  相似文献

Algeria is in a region with an enormous potential of solar energy for power generation. However, photovoltaic (PV) power plants have not yet been developed sufficiently in the country, and its applications such as PV pumping, solar distillation, and solar heating. The main problem is the high maintenance, operating costs, fossil‐fuel transportation, and CO2 emission of Bordj Badji Mokhtar's (BBM's) diesel power plant that exhibits a noteworthy issue in south Algeria. This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental study for PV/diesel hybrid energy system (HES) considering the load demand profile and the solar radiation in isolated area of south Algeria. Suggested hybridization based on a renewable energy with a view to an improved environment is promising. Study results show the performance of PV/diesel system based on solar radiation. The experiment load curve in this typical area may conduct the diesel generator to operate at 60% to 70% of its nominal power with less fuel consumption, and it has been verified during this study that the implementation of a PV/diesel hybrid system is efficient for higher load and higher solar radiation. Results and discussions are encouraging considering less emission of greenhouse gases and less storage of fuel, which drives the government to draw a political arrangement for the improvement of cleaner forms of electricity generation.  相似文献

The active hybridization technique provides an effective approach to combining the best properties of a heterogeneous set of power sources to achieve higher energy density, power density and fuel efficiency. Active hybrid power sources can be used to power hybrid electric vehicles with selected combinations of internal combustion engines, fuel cells, batteries, and/or supercapacitors. They can be deployed in all-electric ships to build a distributed electric power system. They can also be used in a bulk power system to construct an autonomous distributed energy system. An important aspect in designing an active hybrid power source is to find a suitable control strategy that can manage the active power sharing and take advantage of the inherent scalability and robustness benefits of the hybrid system. This paper presents an agent-based power sharing scheme for active hybrid power sources. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed agent-based power sharing scheme, simulation studies are performed for a hybrid power source that can be used in a solar car as the main propulsion power module. Simulation results clearly indicate that the agent-based control framework is effective to coordinate the various energy sources and manage the power/voltage profiles.  相似文献

Renewable energy sources have been taken the place of the traditional energy sources and especially rapidly developments of photovoltaic (PV) technology and fuel cell (FC) technology have been put forward these renewable energy sources (RES) in all other RES. PV systems have been started to be used widely in domestic applications connected to electrical grid and grid connected PV power generating systems have become widespread all around the world. On the other hand, fuel cell power generating systems have been used to support the PV generating so hybrid generation systems consist of PV and fuel cell technology are investigated for power generating. In this study, a grid connected fuel cell and PV hybrid power generating system was developed with Matlab Simulink. 160 Wp solar module was developed based on solar module temperature and solar irradiation by using real data sheet of a commercial PV module and then by using these modules 800 Wp PV generator was obtained. Output current and voltage of PV system was used for input of DC/DC boost converter and its output was used for the input of the inverter. PV system was connected to the grid and designed 5 kW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system was used for supporting the DC bus of the hybrid power generating system. All results obtained from the simulated hybrid power system were explained in the paper. Proposed model was designed as modular so designing and simulating grid connected SOFC and PV systems can be developed easily thanks to flexible design.  相似文献

This research develops an efficient and robust polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell/battery hybrid operating system. The entire system possesses its own rapid dynamic response benefited from hybrid connection and power split characteristics due to DC/DC buck-boost converter. An indispensable energy management system (EMS) plays a significant role in achieving optimal fuel economy and in a promising running stability. EMS as an indispensable part plays a significant role in achieving optimal fuel economy and promising operation stability. This study aims to develop an adaptive supervisory EMS that comprises computer-aided engineering tools to monitor, control, and optimize the performance of the hybrid power system. A stationary fuel cell/battery hybrid operating system is optimized using adaptive-Pontryagin's minimum principle (A-PMP). The proposed algorithm depends on the adaptation of the control parameter (i.e., fuel cell output power) from the state of charge (SOC) and load power feedback. The integrated model simulated in a Matlab/Simulink environment includes the fuel cell, battery, DC/DC converter, and power requirements models by analyzing the three different load profiles. Real-time experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of EMS after analyzing the simulated operating principle and control scheme.  相似文献

A hybrid power source for pulse power applications   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Portable 12 V power supplies are used extensively for communications and power tool applications. These devices demand fast response times of the power supply. Fuel cells are generally best suited to continuous power applications and require an initial warm-up period, although they offer the prospect of increased operational duration over a battery for a given weight of portable system. This paper investigates the combination of specific energy performance from the fuel cell system with the specific power and response time of the battery. Two separate hybrid systems have been developed and tested; a planar, 20-cell, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack together with either a lead–acid or nickel/cadmium battery; and a conventional 20-cell, bipolar, PEMFC stack. Both systems have been tested under pulse-load conditions at temperatures between −20°C and +40°C, and for comparison, the individual components have undergone similar tests. The hybrid systems have successfully operated continuously for several weeks under load profiles that the fuel cell alone could not sustain.  相似文献

The use of super capacitors as secondary sources in fuel cell power systems with adequate energy management strategy strongly contributes to increasing the lifespan of fuel cells by protecting them against sudden variations of the load current and improves the efficiency and the dynamics of the hybrid power system, thus obtained. This paper presents an innovative management strategy of fuel cells-super capacitors hybrid power system, based on a nonlinear control using an integral hysteresis sliding mode controller combined with two cascaded linear controllers. The hybrid power system consists of the fuel cells system, the super capacitors, two power converters, the energy management system and the load. The proposed technique takes into account the physical operating limits of the secondary source such as deep discharges and excessive overloads. Furthermore, the integral effect added to the hysteresis sliding mode controller improves the robustness against disturbances and variations in parameters such as filtering inductances and DC bus capacitors. A detailed model of the system is established and simulated in Matlab/Simulink software, which allows showing its behavior with a very satisfactory accuracy. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed control strategy insures efficient and safe energy transfer. In addition, the control robustness is very satisfactory despite the variation of the system parameters.  相似文献

This paper mainly studied the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)–micro gas turbine (MGT) hybrid power system. The key parameters that greatly influence the overall system performance have been studied and optimized. The thermodynamic potential of improving the hybrid system performance by integrating SOFC with the advanced thermal cycle system is analyzed. The optimization rules of main parameters of SOFC‐MGT hybrid power system with the turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of MGT as a constraint condition are revealed. The research results show that TIT is a key parameter that limits the electrical efficiency of hybrid power system. With the increase of the cell number, both the power generation efficiency of the hybrid cycle power system and TIT increase. Regarding the hybrid system with the fixed cell number, in order to get a higher electrical efficiency, the operating temperature of SOFC should be enhanced as far as possible. However, the higher operating temperature will result in the higher TIT. Increasing of fuel utilization factor is an effective measure to improve the performance of hybrid system. At the same time, TIT increases slightly. Both the electrical efficiency of hybrid power system and TIT reduce with the increase of the ratio of steam to carbon. The achievements obtained from this paper will provide valuable information for further study on SOFC‐MGT hybrid power system with high efficiency. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
