A certifying algorithm for a problem is an algorithm that provides a certificate with each answer that it produces. The certificate is an evidence that can be used to authenticate the correctness of the answer. A Hamiltonian cycle in a graph is a simple cycle in which each vertex of the graph appears exactly once. The Hamiltonian cycle problem is to determine whether or not a graph contains a Hamiltonian cycle. The best result for the Hamiltonian cycle problem on circular-arc graphs is an O(n2logn)-time algorithm, where n is the number of vertices of the input graph. In fact, the O(n2logn)-time algorithm can be modified as a certifying algorithm although it was published before the term certifying algorithms appeared in the literature. However, whether there exists an algorithm whose time complexity is better than O(n2logn) for solving the Hamiltonian cycle problem on circular-arc graphs has been opened for two decades. In this paper, we present an O(Δn)-time certifying algorithm to solve this problem, where Δ represents the maximum degree of the input graph. The certificates provided by our algorithm can be authenticated in O(n) time.  相似文献

We study the classical Bandwidth problem from the viewpoint of parametrised algorithms. Given a graph G=(V,E) and a positive integer k, the Bandwidth problem asks whether there exists a bijective function β:{1,…,∣V∣}→V such that for every edge uvE, ∣β−1(u)−β−1(v)∣≤k. It is known that under standard complexity assumptions, no algorithm for Bandwidth with running time of the form f(k)nO(1) exists, even when the input is restricted to trees. We initiate the search for classes of graphs where such algorithms do exist. We present an algorithm with running time n⋅2O(klogk) for Bandwidth on AT-free graphs, a well-studied graph class that contains interval, permutation, and cocomparability graphs. Our result is the first non-trivial algorithm that shows fixed-parameter tractability of Bandwidth on a graph class on which the problem remains NP-complete.  相似文献

AnOE¦log2 n) algorithm is presented to construct the visibility graph for a collection ofn nonintersecting line segments, where ¦E¦ is the number of edges in the visibility graph. This algorithm is much faster than theO(n 2)-time andO(n 2)-space algorithms by Asanoet al., and by Welzl, on sparse visibility graphs. Thus we partially resolve an open problem raised by Welzl. Further, our algorithm uses onlyO(n) working storage.  相似文献

We present a distributed algorithm for maximum cardinality matching in general graphs. On a general graph withn vertices, our algorithm requiresO(n 5/2) messages in the worst case. On trees, our algorithm computes a maximum matching usingO(n) messages after the election of a leader.  相似文献

A bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) is convex on B if there exists an ordering of the vertices of B such that for any vertex v??A, vertices adjacent to v are consecutive in?B. A complete bipartite subgraph of a graph G is called a biclique of G. Motivated by an application to analyzing DNA microarray data, we study the problem of finding maximum edge bicliques in convex bipartite graphs. Given a bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) which is convex on B, we present a new algorithm that computes a maximum edge biclique of G in O(nlog?3 nlog?log?n) time and O(n) space, where n=|A|. This improves the current O(n 2) time bound available for the problem. We also show that for two special subclasses of convex bipartite graphs, namely for biconvex graphs and bipartite permutation graphs, a maximum edge biclique can be computed in O(n??(n)) and O(n) time, respectively, where n=min?(|A|,|B|) and ??(n) is the slowly growing inverse of the Ackermann function.  相似文献

We present the first dynamic graph algorithm for recognizing interval graphs. The algorithm runs in O(nlog?n) worst-case time per edge deletion or edge insertion, where n is the number of vertices in the graph. The algorithm uses a new representation of interval graphs called the train tree, which is based on the clique-separator graph representation of chordal graphs. The train tree has a number of useful properties and it can be constructed from the clique-separator graph in O(n) time.  相似文献

We show that the 3-colorability problem can be solved in O(n1.296) time on any n-vertex graph with minimum degree at least 15. This algorithm is obtained by constructing a dominating set of the graph greedily, enumerating all possible 3-colorings of the dominating set, and then solving the resulting 2-list coloring instances in polynomial time. We also show that a 3-coloring can be obtained in 2o(n) time for graphs having minimum degree at least ω(n) where ω(n) is any function which goes to ∞. We also show that if the lower bound on minimum degree is replaced by a constant (however large it may be), then neither a 2o(n) time nor a 2o(m) time algorithm is possible (m denotes the number of edges) for 3-colorability unless Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails. We also describe an algorithm which obtains a 4-coloring of a 3-colorable graph in O(n1.2535) time.  相似文献

In this paper, we present optimal O(log n) time, O(n/log n) processor EREW PRAM parallel algorithms for finding the connected components, cut vertices, and bridges of a permutation graph. We also present an O(log n) time, O(n) processor, CREW PRAM model parallel algorithm for finding a Breadth First Search (BFS) spanning tree of a permutation graph rooted at vertex 1 and use the same to derive an efficient parallel algorithm for the All Pairs Shortest Path problem on permutation graphs.  相似文献

Finding a dominating set of minimum cardinality is an NP-hard graph problem, even when the graph is bipartite. In this paper we are interested in solving the problem on graphs having a large independent set. Given a graph G with an independent set of size z, we show that the problem can be solved in time O(2nz), where n is the number of vertices of G. As a consequence, our algorithm is able to solve the dominating set problem on bipartite graphs in time O(2n/2). Another implication is an algorithm for general graphs whose running time is O(n1.7088).  相似文献

We present an optimal parallel algorithm for the single-source shortest path problem for permutation graphs. The algorithm runs in O(log n) time using O(n/log n) processors on an EREW PRAM. As an application, we show that a minimum connected dominating set in a permutation graph can be found in O(log n) time using O(n/log n) processors.  相似文献

Two algorithms for shortest path problems are presented. One is to find the all-pairs shortest paths (APSP) that runs in O(n 2logn + nm) time for n-vertex m-edge directed graphs consisting of strongly connected components with O(logn) edges among them. The other is to find the single-source shortest paths (SSSP) that runs in O(n) time for graphs reducible to the trivial graph by some simple transformations. These algorithms are optimally fast for some special classes of graphs in the sense that the former achieves O(n 2) which is a lower bound of the time necessary to find APSP, and that the latter achieves O(n) which is a lower bound of the time necessary to find SSSP. The latter can be used to find APSP, also achieving the running time O(n 2).  相似文献

In this paper we propose two new multilayer grid models for VLSI layout, both of which take into account the number of contact cuts used. For the first model in which nodes “exist” only on one layer, we prove a tight area × (number of contact cuts) = Θ(n 2) tradeoff for embeddingn-node planar graphs of bounded degree in two layers. For the second model in which nodes “exist” simultaneously on all layers, we give a number of upper bounds on the area needed to embed groups using no contact cuts. We show that anyn-node graph of thickness 2 can be embedded on two layers inO(n 2) area. This bound is tight even if more layers and any number of contact cuts are allowed. We also show that planar graphs of bounded degree can be embedded on two layers inO(n 3/2(logn)2) area. Some of our embedding algorithms have the additional property that they can respect prespecified grid placements of the nodes of the graph to be embedded. We give an algorithm for embeddingn-node graphs of thicknessk ink layers usingO(n 3) area, using no contact cuts, and respecting prespecified node placements. This area is asymptotically optimal for placement-respecting algorithms, even if more layers are allowed, as long as a fixed fraction of the edges do not use contact cuts. Our results use a new result on embedding graphs in a single-layer grid, namely an embedding ofn-node planar graphs such that each edge makes at most four turns, and all nodes are embedded on the same line.  相似文献

We give the first optimal algorithm that computes a minimum cycle basis for any weighted outerplanar graph. Specifically, for any n-node edge-weighted outerplanar graph G, we give an O(n)-time algorithm to obtain an O(n)-space compact representation Z(C) for a minimum cycle basis C of G. Each cycle in C can be computed from Z(C) in O(1) time per edge. Our result works for directed and undirected outerplanar graphs G.  相似文献

In this paper we describe a parallel algorithm that, given annvertex cubic graphGas input, outputs an orthogonal drawing ofGwithO(n) bends,O(n) maximum edge length, andO(n2) area inO(log n) time using a CRCW PRAM withnprocessors. We give two slight variants of the algorithm. The first generates a drawing in which each edge has at most 2 bends; the total number of bends and the area are bounded byn+3 and [formula], respectively. The second optimizes the number of bends per edge (at most one) even if the values of the other functions are slightly worst. Despite its nonoptimality, this parallel algorithm is the first dealing with nonplanar, nonbiconnected graphs. Moreover, no embedding of the graph is requested as input nor is anst-numbering (orlmc-numbering) computed.  相似文献

Ghosh and Bhattacharjee propose [2] (Intern. J. Computer Math., 1984, Vol. 15, pp. 255-268) an algorithm of determining breadth first spanning trees for graphs, which requires that the input graphs contain some vertices, from which every other vertex in the input graph can be reached. These vertices are called starting vertices. The complexity of the GB algorithm is O(log2 n) using O{n 3) processors. In this paper an algorithm, named BREADTH, also computing breadth first spanning trees, is proposed. The complexity is O(log2 n) using O{n 3/logn) processors. Then an efficient parallel algorithm, named- BREADTHFOREST, is proposed, which generalizes algorithm BREADTH. The output of applying BREADTHFOREST to a general graph, which may not contain any starting vertices, is a breadth first spanning forest of the input graph. The complexity of BREADTHFOREST is the same as BREADTH.  相似文献

We present a novel distributed algorithm for the maximal independent set problem (This is an extended journal version of Schneider and Wattenhofer in Twenty-seventh annual ACM SIGACT-SIGOPS symposium on principles of distributed computing, 2008). On bounded-independence graphs our deterministic algorithm finishes in O(log* n) time, n being the number of nodes. In light of Linial’s Ω(log* n) lower bound our algorithm is asymptotically optimal. Furthermore, it solves the connected dominating set problem for unit disk graphs in O(log* n) time, exponentially faster than the state-of-the-art algorithm. With a new extension our algorithm also computes a δ + 1 coloring and a maximal matching in O(log* n) time, where δ is the maximum degree of the graph.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of generating all maximal cliques in a sparse graph in polynomial delay. Given a graph G=(V,E) with n vertices and m edges, the latest and fastest polynomial delay algorithm for sparse graphs enumerates all maximal cliques in O(Δ 4) time delay, where Δ is the maximum degree of vertices. However, it requires an O(n?m) preprocessing time. We improve it in two aspects. First, our algorithm does not need preprocessing. Therefore, our algorithm is a truly polynomial delay algorithm. Second, our algorithm enumerates all maximal cliques in O(Δ?H 3) time delay, where H is the so called H-value of a graph or equivalently it is the smallest integer satisfying |{vVδ(v)≥H}|≤H given δ(v) as the degree of a vertex. In real-world network data, H usually is a small value and much smaller than Δ.  相似文献

We present an O(n 2logn)-time algorithm that finds a maximum matching in a regular graph with n vertices. More generally, the algorithm runs in O(rn 2logn) time if the difference between the maximum degree and the minimum degree is less than r. This running time is faster than applying the fastest known general matching algorithm that runs in $O(\sqrt{n}m)$ -time for graphs with m edges, whenever m=ω(rn 1.5logn).  相似文献
