Special Issue on Selected Papers from BiOCAS 2008 Guest Editors' Introduction

The 11 papers in this special issue were among the top papers from the 2008 IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BiOCAS 2008) held November 20-22, 2008 in Baltimore, MD.     

Power modulators and repetitive pulsed power - [editorial]

Some of the 31 papers in this special issue are the extended, expanded, and revised versions of the presentations of the 2008 International Power Modulator Conference (IPMC) which was held in Las Vegas, USA during May 27-31, 2008 while the other papers are not, but within the general interest of the special issue topics submitted as a result of "Call-for-Papers" announcements placed in several publications and on the web.     

CEIDP conference report

This year, out of 245 abstracts submitted, 239 were accepted and 179 papers were finally published in the CEIDP Annual Report. These papers were submitted from 28 different countries, with the largest numbers from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Canada.

The four papers in this special issue were originally presented at the 2008 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2008), held on May 18-21, 2008, in Seattle, Washington.

The best concepts from the NEC,CEC, and IEC

In Alberta, Canada, the authority having jurisdiction, or the regulator, has allowed qualified users the flexibility to adapt or combine elements from the CEC, NEC, and IEC into a single operating system to take advantage of the best in global technologies. This has resulted in a unique blended system that combines the best of the traditional North American and international approaches and provides cost savings over traditional electrical installations. This article discusses some of the elements used to develop this hybrid approach in terms of global technology equipment designs and wiring practices.

Energy Conservation Technologies and Expectation in Japan

Energy conservation technologies are primary measures against the global environmental issues. Since ‘Oil Shock’ in the middle of 1970s, Japanese industries have endeavored to increase energy efficiency that has resulted in a decrease in the production cost. This article describes the transition of energy consumption in Japan, outline of the energy conservation laws, and energy conservation technology developments for the industrial sector, for the commercial/residential sector, and the transportation sector. Five development themes on energy conservation of the national technological strategies are designated to be promoted by the year 2030. As one of the designated topics in the commercial sector, some development results of a national project on HEMS (Home Energy Management System) are described.
