Vitamin A concentration in breast adipose tissue as a risk factor for breast cancer was studied by assessing the vitamin A concentration in breast adipose tissue of women with benign breast disease (n = 45) and of those with breast cancer (n = 36). No significant differences in vitamin A concentration between the two groups were found either in premenopausal or postmenopausal subjects. The same was true with the dietary intake of vitamin A in these two groups of women. The vitamin A concentration in breast adipose tissue had a significant correlation with the dietary intake in breast cancer cases only (r = 0.42, p < 0.01). The present results support the previous suggestion that vitamin A is unlikely to be related to the risk of breast cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Calcium and vitamin D have been hypothesized to reduce colorectal cancer risk. Epidemiological evidence, however, is mixed. METHODS: To explore those relationships, data were collected as part of a population-based, case-control study of colorectal cancer in Wisconsin women (678 controls, 348 colon and 164 rectal cancer cases). A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to ascertain food and dietary supplement intake 2 years prior to interview. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (OR). RESULTS: Higher levels of calcium intake were associated with reduced colon and rectal cancer risk. The following adjusted OR and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were observed, comparing the fifth quintile (based on control intake) with the first: colon cancer: OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-1.0, P-trend: 0.03; rectal cancer: OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.3-1.1, P-trend: 0.07. Similar relationships were observed for vitamin D intake, although OR were closer to the null value and did not always behave in a step-wise fashion (fifth quintile versus the first--colon cancer: OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.4-1.1, P-trend: 0.05; rectal cancer: OR = 0.8, 95% CI: 0.5-1.5, P-trend: 0.42). CONCLUSION: These data support a protective association of calcium on colon and rectal cancer risk.  相似文献

This work presents estimates and middle-term projections of incidence and prevalence levels in Italy for cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, of the stomach, and of colon and rectum. The estimation procedure was previously validated using incidence data observed by Italian cancer registries operating in limited geographical areas. Projections up to the year 2000 of mortality, incidence, and prevalence rates and estimated cohort effects are reported for stomach and colorectal cancers only. For both cancer sites, cohort effects, rather than period effects, result to be responsible for mortality and incidence dynamics. Incidence levels show a general decreasing trend for stomach cancer and an increasing one for colorectal cancer. Cumulative risk trend tends, however, to level-off for the youngest cohorts. Moreover, the well known geographical differences between the North and the South of the country seem to be progressively reducing.  相似文献

Proposed mechanisms of action for ascorbic acid (ascorbate, vitamin C) in the prevention and treatment of cancer include enhancement of the immune system, stimulation of collagen formation necessary for "walling off" tumors, inhibition of hyaluronidase which keeps the ground substance around the tumor intact and prevents metastasis, prevention of oncogenic viruses, correction of an ascorbate deficiency often seen in cancer patients, expedition of wound healing after cancer surgery, enhancement of the effect of certain chemotherapy drugs, reduction of the toxicity of other chemotherapeutic agents such as Adriamycin, prevention of free radical damage, and neutralization of carcinogenic substances. Scottish as well as Japanese studies have pointed to the potential benefit of high dose vitamin C for the treatment of "terminal" cancer. Mayo Clinic studies, however, have contradicted the Scottish and Japanese findings, resulting in accusations of methodological flaws from both sides. Numerous epidemiological studies have pointed to the importance of dietary and supplemental ascorbate in the prevention of various types of cancer including bladder, breast, cervical, colorectal, esophageal, lung, pancreatic, prostate, salivary gland, stomach, leukemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  相似文献

Dietary patterns in 81 rural Nepali households with a 1-6-y-old child with a history of xerophthalmia were compared with dietary patterns of 81 households with an age-matched nonxerophthalmic control subject. Weekly food-frequency questionnaires were collected from case and control "focus" children, a younger sibling (if present), and the household 1-2 y after recruitment and treatment of cases. Control households and children were more likely than case households and children to consume vitamin A-rich foods during the monsoon (July-September) and major rice harvesting (October-December) seasons. Cases were less likely to consume preformed vitamin A-rich foods throughout the year [odds ratio (OR) = 1.2-4.5] with the strongest differences observed from October to December (OR = 2.0-4.2). Dietary risks were generally shared by younger siblings of cases, suggesting that infrequent intake of beta-carotene and preformed vitamin-A rich foods begins early in life and clusters among siblings within households, a pattern that is consistent with their higher risk of xerophthalmia and mortality. In developing countries where vitamin A deficiency is endemic, dietary counseling for children with xerophthalmia should be extended to their younger siblings. Moreover, dietary intake of preformed vitamin A may be as, or more, important as carotenoid-containing food consumption in protecting children and other members of households from vitamin A deficiency.  相似文献

A 1:1 case-control study of lung cancer incidence among women in Shenyang was conducted to explore the relationship between diet and the risk of lung cancer, with emphasis on the potential effects of a list of specific dietary constituents on modifying lung cancer risks. Dietary information on 290 cases and population-matched controls was obtained by personal interviews. Multiple logistic regression models were used for the statistical analysis and summarization of the data. A significant difference was found between cases and controls with respect to intake of beta-carotene, vitamin C and fibers, all of which reduced the risk for lung cancer in a dose-dependent manner; yielding calculated odds ratio (OR) of 0.84, 0.75, and 0.46, respectively. The apparent effects of these nutrients persisted after adjusting for cigarette smoking;suggesting that they may function as protective factors to reduce the risk for lung cancer in Chinese women.  相似文献

The 'antioxidant hypothesis' proposes that vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and other antioxidants occurring in fruit and vegetables afford protection against heart disease and cancer by preventing oxidative damage to lipids and to DNA, respectively. To test elements of this hypothesis, we have measured blood levels of dietary antioxidants, and 8-oxodeoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) concentrations in lymphocyte DNA, in healthy men and women from five European countries: France, Ireland, The Netherlands, Spain, and the U.K. Volunteers, aged 25 45, all nonsmokers, gave blood samples before and after a 12-wk carotenoid supplementation regime. Vitamin C was measured in plasma and vitamin E and carotenoids were measured in serum by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 8-oxo-dG was assayed by HPLC (with coulometric detection) in DNA isolated from lymphocytes from the same blood samples. Mean values were calculated for groups of volunteers at each sampling time according to country, sex, and supplementation (between 9 and 24 individual samples contributing to each mean). We found that 8-oxo-dG levels in lymphocyte DNA vary significantly according to sex and country. A low mean 8-oxo-dG concentration is seen in DNA of women from all five countries, and of men from France and Spain. 8-oxo-dG is significantly higher (up to about threefold) in lymphocyte DNA from men in Ireland and the U.K. Oxidative DNA damage is not significantly affected by carotenoid supplementation; nor is there any association with mean baseline levels of antioxidants, which are generally similar in the five countries. The five countries sampled lie on an axis from northern to southern Europe with a steep gradient in terms of premature heart disease. There is a strong association between premature coronary heart disease mortality in men and the mean levels of 8-oxo-dG for the five countries (r = 0.95, P < 0.01). Women have low coronary heart disease mortality rates, which do not correlate with 8-oxo-dG. In terms of cancer deaths, only colorectal cancer in men shows a significant positive correlation (r = 0.91, P < 0.05), and stomach cancer in women is negatively correlated with DNA oxidation (r = -0.92, P = 0.01).  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Experimental and epidemiologic investigations suggest that alpha-tocopherol (the most prevalent chemical form of vitamin E found in vegetable oils, seeds, grains, nuts, and other foods) and beta-carotene (a plant pigment and major precursor of vitamin A found in many yellow, orange, and dark-green, leafy vegetables and some fruit) might reduce the risk of cancer, particularly lung cancer. The initial findings of the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study (ATBC Study) indicated, however, that lung cancer incidence was increased among participants who received beta-carotene as a supplement. Similar results were recently reported by the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET), which tested a combination of beta-carotene and vitamin A. PURPOSE: We examined the effects of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene supplementation on the incidence of lung cancer across subgroups of participants in the ATBC Study defined by base-line characteristics (e.g., age, number of cigarettes smoked, dietary or serum vitamin status, and alcohol consumption), by study compliance, and in relation to clinical factors, such as disease stage and histologic type. Our primary purpose was to determine whether the pattern of intervention effects across subgroups could facilitate further interpretation of the main ATBC Study results and shed light on potential mechanisms of action and relevance to other populations. METHODS: A total of 29,133 men aged 50-69 years who smoked five or more cigarettes daily were randomly assigned to receive alpha-tocopherol (50 mg), beta-carotene (20 mg), alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene, or a placebo daily for 5-8 years (median, 6.1 years). Data regarding smoking and other risk factors for lung cancer and dietary factors were obtained at study entry, along with measurements of serum levels of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene. Incident cases of lung cancer (n = 894) were identified through the Finnish Cancer Registry and death certificates. Each lung cancer diagnosis was independently confirmed, and histology or cytology was available for 94% of the cases. Intervention effects were evaluated by use of survival analysis and proportional hazards models. All P values were derived from two-sided statistical tests. RESULTS: No overall effect was observed for lung cancer from alpha-tocopherol supplementation (relative risk [RR] = 0.99; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.87-1.13; P = .86, logrank test). beta-Carotene supplementation was associated with increased lung cancer risk (RR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.02-1.33; P = .02, logrank test). The beta-carotene effect appeared stronger, but not substantially different, in participants who smoked at least 20 cigarettes daily (RR = 1.25; 95% CI = 1.07-1.46) compared with those who smoked five to 19 cigarettes daily (RR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.76-1.23) and in those with a higher alcohol intake (> or = 11 g of ethanol/day [just under one drink per day]; RR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.01-1.81) compared with those with a lower intake (RR = 1.03; 95% CI = 0.85-1.24). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with alpha-tocopherol or beta-carotene does not prevent lung cancer in older men who smoke. beta-Carotene supplementation at pharmacologic levels may modestly increase lung cancer incidence in cigarette smokers, and this effect may be associated with heavier smoking and higher alcohol intake. IMPLICATIONS: While the most direct way to reduce lung cancer risk is not to smoke tobacco, smokers should avoid high-dose beta-carotene supplementation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of supplementary and dietary vitamin E and C intake with the progression of coronary artery disease. DESIGN: A subgroup analysis of the on-trial antioxidant vitamin intake database acquired in the Cholesterol Lowering Atherosclerosis Study, a randomized, placebo-controlled, serial angiographic clinical trial evaluating the risk and benefit of colestipol-niacin on coronary artery disease progression. SETTING: Community- and university-based cardiac catheterization laboratories. SUBJECTS: A total of 156 men aged 40 to 59 years with previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery. INTERVENTION: Supplementary and dietary vitamin E and C intake (nonrandomized) in association with cholesterol-lowering diet and either colestipol-niacin or placebo (randomized). OUTCOME: Change per subject in the percentage of vessel diameter obstructed because of stenosis (%S) determined by quantitative coronary angiography after 2 years of randomized therapy on all lesions, mild/moderate lesions (< 50%S), and severe lesions (> or = 50%S). RESULTS: Overall, subjects with supplementary vitamin E intake of 100 IU per day or greater demonstrated less coronary artery lesion progression than did subjects with supplementary vitamin E intake less than 100 IU per day for all lesions (P = .04) and for mild/moderate lesions (P = .01). Within the drug group, benefit of supplementary vitamin E intake was found for all lesions (P = .02) and mild/moderate lesions (P = .01). Within the placebo group, benefit of supplementary vitamin E intake was not found. No benefit was found for use of supplementary vitamin C exclusively or in conjunction with supplementary vitamin E, use of multivitamins, or increased dietary intake of vitamin E or vitamin C. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate an association between supplementary vitamin E intake and angiographically demonstrated reduction in coronary artery lesion progression. Verification from carefully designed, randomized, serial arterial imaging end point trials is needed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Health care of nursing mothers and their infants is an important priority of primary preventive care. The mother's diet plays an important role in this respect. The objective of the presented investigation was to assess the adequacy of the dietary intake of lactating mothers during the sixth month after delivery. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data on the education, body weight, height of the mother, dietary intake, evaluated from a three-day dietary record, were collected from 131 nursing mothers and compared with the Czech recommended dietary allowances for nursing mothers as well as with data from 265 controls, i.e. women who did no longer breastfeed their babies. From the results ensues a significantly higher calcium intake (937 mg; SD = 415, p < 0.001), vitamin B1 (1.1 mg, SD = 0.5, p < 0.001), total energy (8.7 MJ, SD = 2.6, p < 0.01), protein 75.4 g, SD = 18, p < 0.01), carbohydrates (281 g, SD = 112, p < 0.01) and riboflavin (1.3 mg, SD = 0.5, p < 0.01) in nursing women as compared with those not nursing. The nursing mothers, however, do not meet the Czech recommended dietary allowances as regards total energy, calcium, vitamin C, linoleic acid, vegetable proteins and iron. Other problematic nutrients-magnesium, zinc, folates, pyridoxine, selenium and iodine could not be assessed as they are not listed in the Czech food composition tables. In women with university education the energy and nutrient intake was in the majority more favourable than in women with elementary education. On the other hand no statistical differences were found in weight increments during the period from the beginning of gestation to the sixth month after delivery between nursing and not nursing mothers. CONCLUSIONS: The results of analysis of the dietary intake of nursing mothers indicate that the Czech recommended allowances are not met as regards energy, calcium, linoleic acid, protein and iron. Whether the intake is really inadequate or whether the recommended allowances are excessive remains an open question.  相似文献

Cancer is a disease of the genome and free-radicals can damage genomic DNA, hence the interest in the potential protective antioxidant effect of vitamin and minerals. Indeed, the findings of most retrospective studies suggest that diets rich in fruits and vegetables have a protective effect against cancer. Prospective randomized trials have however given controversial results. Beta-carotene, the precursor of vitamin A has been shown to induce regression of precancerous lesions and 13-cis retinoic acid has a preventive effect on the development of a second cancer in patients with epidermoid cancer of the buccal cavity, the pharynx or the larynx although no effect has been observed on the primary cancer. Current research also suggests vitamin C has a potential anticancer effect, particularly for cancer of the stomach, the rectum and the cervix. For vitamin E, epidemiological data give less conclusive results. Several prospective studies suggest the absence of any correlation between vitamin E intake and general risk of cancer. A Chinese trial has shown a decreased incidence of oesophageal and gastric carcinoma while a Finnish trial revealed increased incidence of cancer among smokers treated by beta-carotene and vitamin E. Selenium and zinc intake, based on geographical correlations, has also been suggested to affect cancer incidence, but the results of prospective studies are conflicting. For example in 10 such trials analyzing blood selenium levels and risk of cancer, 4 have demonstrated a significant correlation. Further research is needed but is hindered by the absence of an adequate animal model and the difficulty in conducting large clinical trials. Nevertheless, positive data collected to date must be validated to determine the real effect of dietary preventive measures in the fight against cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an association between tea drinking and lung cancer. In view of these data, the relationship between tea drinking as well as other dietary factors and lung cancer was investigated in a case-control study in the west of Sweden. METHODS: Patients with suspected lung cancer were collected from pulmonary units at central hospitals in the area investigated, and population controls were matched for age. The material reported here comprises 308 male cases with a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer and 504 controls. The participants were interviewed by specially trained nurses, using a questionnaire to assess smoking, dietary habits, occupational exposures and conditions in the residential area (local air pollution). This paper reports the results from dietary factors studied with a food frequency technique. RESULTS: The results demonstrated a strong protective effect of vegetables (odds ratio [OR] = 0.69, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.46-1.05, and OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.23-0.61 for intermediate and high consumption classes respectively). A low OR was consistent for all histological types of lung cancer. High consumption of fruits did not show any similar protective effect. Drinking milk was associated with a dose-response related risk increase after adjustment for smoking and vegetable consumption (P for trend = 0.07). Odds ratio was 1.73, 95% CI: 1.00-3.01 for high consumption of milk. CONCLUSIONS: High intake of vegetables had a strong protective effect among males. Diet is thus a potential confounding factor in studies on lung cancer and environmental factors and should thus be taken into consideration in the planning of such studies.  相似文献

Lung cancers occur more commonly in the upper lobes than in the lower lobes, but its pathophysiologic basis is not well understood. Because numerous studies have reported a consistent inverse relationship between lung cancer risk and intake of certain vegetables and fruits, we hypothesized that the balance between diet-derived protective substances delivered via the circulation and cigarette-derived carcinogenic substances delivered via the airways would be less favorable in the upper lobes compared with the lower lobes, hence accounting for the upper lobe predominance of tumors among smokers. Thus, we examined the association between diet and tumor location in 328 patients with lung cancer. The ratio of upper to lower lobe tumors was 2.5:1.0. In univariate analysis, age, height, weight, sex, race, family history of cancer, education level, tumor histology, calories consumed per day, and intake of animal fat did not differ significantly between patients with upper versus lower lobe tumors. Predictors of tumor location in univariate analysis were family history of lung cancer; smoking history; history of asbestos exposure; and intakes of yellow-orange vegetables, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, C, and E. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, the independent predictors of upper lobe tumor location were family history of lung cancer (p = 0.03), history of asbestos exposure (p = 0.02), less intake of yellow-orange vegetables (p < 0.04), and less intake of vitamin E (p = 0.05). Our results show a strong inverse association between upper lobe location of lung cancer and intake of yellow-orange vegetables and vitamin E.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In recent years, mortality from lung cancer has increased rapidly in Korea, a South East Asian country with a high prevalence of smoking. The objectives of this study are to examine how age, period, and birth cohort effects contributed to trends in lung cancer mortality in Korea 1980-1994, and to predict lung cancer mortality rates for 1995-2004. METHODS: Age- and sex-specific lung cancer mortality rates were obtained from annual reports of the National Office of Statistics in Korea. Poisson regression models were used to estimate age, period and cohort effects. RESULTS: Among men, age-adjusted annual mortality rates from lung cancer (per 100000) increased from 3.7 in 1980 to 17.8 in 1994; corresponding rates for women were 1.4 and 7.0. As age increased, mortality rates from lung cancer increased more rapidly in men than in women. Within the same age group, the mortality of younger cohorts was higher than older cohorts. The average annual number of lung cancer deaths projected for the years 2000-2004 among men and women will be 15441 and 3572 respectively, while the average annual age-adjusted mortality rates from lung cancer (per 100000) will be 65.4 for men and 15.1 for women. These rates correspond to 17.7- and 10.7-fold increases over the 1980 mortality rates in men and women, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results, in conjunction with trends in tobacco consumption, indicate that mortality from lung cancer in both men and women will increase substantially through the early part of the 21st century in Korea.  相似文献

Stomach cancer remains the second leading cancer in incidence in Shanghai, China, despite its decline over the past 2 decades. To clarify risk factors for this common malignancy, we conducted a population-based case-control study in Shanghai, China. Included in the study were 1,124 stomach cancer patients (age 20-69) newly diagnosed in 1988-1989 and 1,451 controls randomly selected among Shanghai residents. Usual adult dietary intake was assessed using a comprehensive food frequency questionnaire. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using logistic regression models. Risks of stomach cancer were inversely associated with high consumption of several food groups, including fresh vegetables and fruits, poultry, eggs, plant oil, and some nutrients, such as protein, fat, fiber and antioxidant vitamins. By contrast, risks increased with increasing consumption of dietary carbohydrates, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1-2.1) and 1.9 (95% CI 1.3-2.9) in the highest quartile of intake among men (p for trend=0.02) and women (p=0.0007), respectively. Similar increases in risk were associated with frequent intake of noodles and bread in both men (p=0.07) and women (p=0.05) after further adjustment for fiber consumption. In addition, elevated risks were associated with frequent consumption of preserved, salty or fried foods, and hot soup/porridge, and with irregular meals, speed eating and binge eating. No major differences in risk were seen according to subsite (cardia vs. non-cardia). Our findings add to the evidence that diet plays a major role in stomach cancer risk and suggest the need for further evaluation of risks associated with carbohydrates and starchy foods as well as the mechanisms involved.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies have shown dietary antioxidants to be inversely correlated with ischemic heart disease. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether dietary beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E were related to the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in an elderly population. DESIGN: The study sample consisted of 4802 participants of the Rotterdam Study aged 55-95 y who were free of MI at baseline and for whom dietary data assessed by a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire were available. During a 4-y follow-up period, 124 subjects had an MI. The association between energy-adjusted beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E intakes and risk of MI was examined by multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Risk of MI for the highest compared with the lowest tertile of beta-carotene intake was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.34, 0.83; P for trend = 0.013), adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, pack-years, income, education, alcohol intake, energy-adjusted intakes of vitamin C and E, and use of antioxidative vitamin supplements. When beta-carotene intakes from supplements were considered, the inverse relation with risk of MI was slightly more pronounced. Stratification by smoking status indicated that the association was most evident in current and former smokers. No association with risk of MI was observed for dietary vitamin C and vitamin E. CONCLUSION: The results of this observational study in the elderly population of the Rotterdam Study support the hypothesis that high dietary beta-carotene intakes may protect against cardiovascular disease. We did not observe an association between vitamin C or vitamin E and MI.  相似文献

Delayed stool transit and other gastrointestinal abnormalities are commonly observed in persons with diabetes mellitus and are also known to be associated with colorectal cancer. Previous studies of the contribution of diabetes to colorectal cancer incidence and mortality have been limited by small sample sizes and failure to adjust for covariates. With more than 1 million respondents, the 1959-1972 Cancer Prevention Study provided a unique opportunity to explore whether persons with diabetes (n=15,487) were more likely to develop colorectal cancer during a 13-year follow-up period than were persons without diabetes (n=850,946). After adjustment for colorectal cancer risk factors, such as race, educational level, body mass index, smoking, alcohol use, dietary intake, aspirin use, physical activity, and family history of colorectal cancer, the incidence density ratio comparing colorectal cancer in those with diabetes and those without diabetes was 1.30 (95% confidence interval 1.03-1.65) for men and 1.16 (95% confidence interval 0.87-1.53) for women. However, diabetes was not associated with greater case fatality. Future studies should explore the possibility of a cancer-promoting gastrointestinal milieu, including delayed stool transit and elevated fecal bile acid concentrations, associated with hyperglycemia and diabetic neuropathy.  相似文献

We examined the cross-sectional relation of dietary vitamin C intake to serum lipids in 1,825 preadolescent black and white girls. Dietary vitamin C intake exclusive of supplement use, determined by 3-day diet record, appeared unrelated to total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Because other investigators have demonstrated an inverse association between vitamin C and total serum cholesterol in individuals with elevated total serum cholesterol levels, we analyzed the subgroup of 285 girls (142 blacks and 143 whites) with total serum cholesterol levels > or = 200 mg per dl. Multivariate analyses of this subgroup, which adjusted for saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, and energy intake and for body mass index, demonstrated negative association between vitamin C intake and total serum cholesterol. In girls with total serum cholesterol levels > or = 200 mg per dl, each 100 mg per day increase in dietary vitamin C intake (ranges 13-373 and 14-242 mg per day for blacks and whites, respectively) was associated with a total serum cholesterol decrease of 4 mg per dl (95% confidence limits = -10.34, 2.77) in blacks and 13 mg per dl (95% confidence limits = -22.99, -2.68) in whites. If the observed association is causal and generalizable, our results suggest that increased vitamin C intake could play an important role in the cholesterol homeostasis of females with elevated total cholesterol levels.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In a population-based case-control study of colon carcinoma and nutrition involving the francophone community in Greater Montreal, a total of 402 cases (200 males and 202 females) and 668 controls (239 males and 429 females) were interviewed. METHODS: Cases from 1989-1993 were identified through the admission offices of 5 major francophone teaching hospitals in Montreal and were ages 35-79 years. Controls matched by age, place of residence, and language were selected by a modified random digit dialing method. Information on dietary intake was collected with a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS: No associations were evident between colon carcinoma and total energy, protein, or carbohydrate consumption, whereas a suggestive inverse association was found with total fat intake, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.78 (P = 0.0637), and with saturated fat intake as well (OR = 0.71, P = 0.0893). A strongly significant inverse association was found with dietary fiber (OR = 0.50, P = 0.0018). The strongest inverse association concerning fiber was found with fiber from vegetable sources (OR = 0.57, P = 0.0096), and a suggestive (although nonsignificant) inverse association (OR = 0.74, P = 0.0687) was found with fiber from fruits. Calcium was inversely associated with risk (OR = 0.69, P = 0.0411), as was dietary intake of vitamin A (OR = 0.67, P = 0.0162), retinol, (OR = 0.069, P = 0.0409), vitamin E (OR = 0.53, P = 0.0028), and alphatocopherol (OR = 0.63, P = 0.0256). Although there was no association demonstrated between dietary beta-carotene intake and risk, a suggestive (although nonsignificant) inverse association with intake of other types of carotene was observed (OR = 0.76, P = 0.0740). No association was found between intake of other nutrients investigated in this study and risk of colon carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: There is strong evidence from epidemiologic studies that high intake of fat and meat are risk factors for colorectal carcinoma in humans, whereas high intake of vegetable and fruit are inversely associated with risk of colon carcinoma. The findings from this study are in agreement with this observation.  相似文献

When comparing nutrition and health among mothers in both Japan and Philippines, it can be concluded that, in regard to nutrition, the results of the total dietary scores for mothers in divided into pregnant and after-delivery stages showed that pregnant Filipino mothers' average are lower than those of pregnant Japanese mothers. Pregnant Filipino mothers and those just after delivery to 4 months had lower average dietary scores than Filipino mothers 5 months and later after delivery. These results are thought to be an important factor in the improvement of health condition and life expectancy of Filipino mothers and their children. In Japanese mothers, such differences were not found. When comparing individual dietary scores and the rate of nutrients consumed to the optimum amounts, significant differences were found among mothers in both countries. Analysis of food diaries of mothers from both countries found that Japanese mothers had average intakes of nutrients such as energy, protein, fat, vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 and were deficient in calcium, iron and vitamin A. Filipino mothers took in average amounts of protein, calcium, iron, vitamin B2 and vitamin C and were deficient in energy, fat and vitamin B1.  相似文献
