Nano-SiC (SiCn) coating was deposited on SiC pre-coated C/C composites by a hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition. The phase compositions, surface and cross-section microstructures, and anti-oxidation properties of the multilayer coatings were investigated. Results show that hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition is an effective route to prepare smooth and homogeneous SiCn coating on SiC-C/C composites. The as-prepared SiCn/SiC multilayer coatings can effectively protect C/C composites from oxidation in air at 1773 K for 202 h with a weight loss of 0.79% and at 1873 K for 64 h with a weight loss of 1.3%.

The present study has been conducted in order to investigate the effect of the surface morphology of SiC inner coating on the bonding strength and ablation resistance of the sprayed ZrB2-SiC coating for C/C composites. The microstructure of SiC inner coatings prepared by chemical vapor deposition and pack cementation at different temperatures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and 3D Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. Tensile bonding strength and oxyacetylene ablation testing were used to characterize the bonding strength and ablation resistance of the sprayed ZrB2-SiC coating, respectively. Results show that SiC inner coating prepared by chemical vapor deposition has a smooth surface, which is not beneficial to improve the bonding strength and ablation resistance of the sprayed ZrB2-SiC coating. SiC inner coating prepared by pack cementation at 2000 °C has a rugged surface with the roughness of 72.15 µm, and the sprayed ZrB2-SiC coating with it as inner layer exhibits good bonding strength and ablation resistance.

To improve the wear resistance of SiC coating on carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) were introduced into the SiC wear resistant coating. The dense SiC nanowire-reinforced SiC coating (SiCNW-SiC coating) was prepared on C/C composites using a two-step method consisting of chemical vapor deposition and pack cementation. The incorporation of SiCNWs improved the fracture toughness of SiC coating, which is an advantage in wear resistance. Wear behavior of the as-prepared coatings was investigated at elevated temperatures. The results show that the wear resistance of SiCNW-SiC coating was improved significantly by introducing SiC nanowires. It is worth noting that the wear rate of SiCNW-SiC coating was an order of magnitude lower than that of the SiC coating without SiCNWs at 800 °C. The wear mechanisms of SiCNW-SiC coating at 800 °C were abrasive wear and delamination. Pullout and breakage of SiC grains resulted in failure of SiC coating without SiCNWs at 800 °C.

Oxidation resistant C-AlPO4–mullite coating for SiC pre-coated carbon/carbon composites (SiC-C/C) was prepared by a novel hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition process. The phase composition, surface and cross-section microstructure of the as-prepared multi-layer coatings were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of deposition voltage on phase composition, microstructure and oxidation resistance of the as-prepared coatings was particularly investigated. Results show that the outer layer coating mainly composed of C-AlPO4 and mullite phase can be achieved after the hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition. The thickness, density and anti-oxidation property of the C-AlPO4–mullite coating was improved with the increase of deposition voltage from 160 V to 200 V. The multi-layer coating prepared at a voltage of 200 V exhibit excellent anti-oxidation property, which can effectively protect C/C composites from oxidation in air at 1773 K for 324 h with a weight loss of 1.01%. The failure of the multi-layer coatings is due to the generation of cross-holes in the coating, which cannot be self-cured by the metaphosphate and silicate glass layer after long time oxidation at 1773 K.

To improve the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, a dense HfC nanowire-toughened Si-Mo-Cr/SiC multilayer coating was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and pack cementation. The microstructure, thermal shock and isothermal oxidation resistance of the coating were investigated. HfC nanowires could improve the toughness of the coating and suppress the coating cracking. After incorporating HfC nanowires in the coating, both of the thermal shock and isothermal oxidation resistance of the coating were obviously improved. The multilayer coating with HfC nanowires could effectively protect C/C composites at 1773 K for 270 h, whose weight loss is only 0.19%. The good oxidation resistance is mainly attributed to the formation of a compound glass layer containing SiO2 and Cr2O3.

To protect carbon/carbon (C/C) composites against oxidation, a mullite coating was prepared on SiC precoated C/C composites by a hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition process. The phase composition, microstructure and oxidation resistance of the prepared mullite/SiC coatings were investigated. Results show that hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition is an effective route to achieve crack-free mullite coatings. The mullite/SiC coating displays excellent oxidation resistance and can protect C/C composites from oxidation at 1773 K for 322 h with a weight loss rate of only 4.89 × 10?4 g/cm2 h. The failure of the multi-layer coatings is considered to be caused by the volatilization of silicate glass layer, the formation of microholes and microcracks on the coating surface and the formation of penetrative holes between the SiC bonding layer and the C/C matrix at 1773 K. The corresponding high temperature oxidation activation energy of the coated C/C composites at 1573–1773 K is calculated to be 111.11 kJ/mol.

To improve oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, a multiphase double-layer ZrB2-CrSi2-SiC-Si/SiC coating was prepared on the surface of C/C composites by pack cementation. Thermogravimetry analysis showed that the as-prepared coating could provide effective oxidative protection for C/C composites from room temperature to 1490 °C. After thermal cycling between 1500 °C and room temperature, the fracture behaviors of the as-prepared specimens changed and their residual flexural strengths decreased as thermal cycles increased. The specimen after 20 thermal cycles presented pseudo-plastic fracture characteristics and relatively high residual flexural strength (83.1%), while the specimen after 30 thermal cycles failed catastrophically without fiber pullout due to the severe oxidation damage of C/C substrate especially the brittleness of the reinforcement fibers.

To improve the oxidation resistance of the carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, a TaB2–SiC–Si multiphase oxidation protective ceramic coating was prepared on the surface of SiC coated C/C composites by pack cementation. Results showed that the outer multiphase coating was mainly composed of TaB2, SiC and Si. The multilayer coating is about 200 μm in thickness, which has no penetration crack or big hole. The coating could protect C/C from oxidation for 300 h with only 0.26 × 10?2 g2/cm2 mass loss at 1773 K in air. The formed silicate glass layer containing SiO2 and tantalum oxides can not only seal the defects in the coating, but also reduce oxygen diffusion rates, thus improving the oxidation resistance.

Al2O3-modified SiC (AOSC) and Al-modified SiC (ASC) coatings were prepared on carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by one-time pack cementation (PC). Their microstructures and anti-oxidation performances were studied. Compared with ASC coating, AOSC coating shows more conspicuous defects (micro-cracks and holes) and lower densification. ASC coating can offer better oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance to C/C composites than AOSC coating. Al additive can more efficiently improve the sinterability of SiC, which causes the above results. Besides, Al2O3 oxidation product is more stable than SiO2 (l) of oxidized SiC at 1500 °C based on the thermodynamic analysis.

In this study, SiC coating for C/C composites was prepared by pack cementation method at 1773 K, and MoSi2-SiOC-Si3N4 as an outer coating was successfully fabricated on the SiC coated samples by slurry method at 1273 K. The microstructure and phase composition of the coatings were analyzed. Results showed that a porous β-SiC inner coating and a crack-free MoSi2-SiOC-Si3N4 coating are formed. Effect of Si3N4 content on the oxidation resistance of the coated C/C composites at 1773 K in air was also investigated. The weight loss curves revealed that introducing the appropriate proportion of Si3N4 could improve the oxidation resistance of coating. The MoSi2-SiOC/SiC coated C/C sample had an accelerated weight loss after oxidation in air for 20 h. However, the coating containing 45% Si3N4 could protect C/C composition from oxidation for 100 h with a minute weight loss of 0.63%.

To improve the oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites at high temperature, a SiC nanowire-toughened MoSi2-WSi2-SiC-Si multiphase coating was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and pack cementation. The microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of the coating were investigated. After the introduction of SiC nanowires, the elastic modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness of the MoSi2-WSi2-SiC-Si coating were increased by 25.48%, 4.09% and 45.03%, respectively. The weight loss of the coated sample with SiC nanowires was deceased from 4.83–2.08% after thermal shock between 1773 K and room temperature for 30 cycles and the weight loss is only 3.24% after isothermal oxidation at 1773 K in air for 82 h. The good oxidation resistance of the coating is mainly attributed to that SiC nanowires can effectively inhibit the propagation of cracks in the coating by the toughening mechanisms including bridging and pull-out.

Yttrium silicate environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) on C/SiC composites were fabricated by using polysiloxanes-derived ceramic process. In order to reduce the free silica in the resultant ceramic coatings, Y2O3 was added as an active filler. The materials with different weight ratios of polysiloxanes to Y2O3 were synthesized. Their coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and water-vapor resistance were tested. The results indicated that the composition of 50% Y2O3–50% polysiloxanes (Y50) was suitable to be the EBCs for C/SiC composites. The C/SiC composites coated with Y50 were tested in the water-vapor environments at 1400 °C for 200 h. The results revealed that such a coating could effectively protect the C/SiC composites.

To investigate the silicon/graphite ratio and temperature on preparation and properties of ZrB2–SiC coatings, ZrB2, silicon, and graphite powders were used as pack powders to prepare ZrB2–SiC coatings on SiC coated graphite samples at different temperatures by pack cementation method. The composition, microstructure, thermal shock, and oxidation resistance of these coatings were characterized and assessed. High silicon/graphite ratio (in this case, 2) did not guarantee higher coating density, instead could be harmful to coating formation and led to the lump of pack powders, especially at temperatures of 2100 and 2200 °C. But residual silicon in the coating is beneficial for high density and oxidation protection ability. The SiC/ZrB2–SiC (ZS50-2) coating prepared at 2000 °C showed excellent oxidation protective ability, owing to the residual silicon in the coating and dense coating structure. The weight loss of ZS50-2 after 15 thermal shocks between 1500 °C and room temperature, and oxidation for 19 h at 1500 °C are 6.5% and 2.9%, respectively.

Oxidation protective SiC nanowires‐reinforced SiC (SiCNWs‐SiC) coating was prepared on pack cementation (PC) SiC‐coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. This double‐layer SiCNWs‐SiC/PC SiC‐coating system on C/C composites not only has the advantages of SiC buffer layer but also has the toughening effects of SiCNWs. The microstructure and phase composition of the nanowires and the coatings were examined by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The single‐crystalline β‐SiC nanowires with twins and stacking faults were deposited uniformly and oriented randomly with diameter of 50‐200 nm and length ranging from several to tens micrometers. The dense SiCNWs‐SiC coating with some closed pores was obtained by SiC nanocrystals stacked tightly with each other on the surface of SiCNWs. After introducing SiCNWs in the coating system, the oxidation resistance is effectively improved. The oxidation test results showed that the weight loss of the SiCNWs‐SiC/PC SiC‐coated samples was 4.91% and 1.61% after oxidation at 1073 K for 8 hours and at 1473 K for 276 hours, respectively. No matter oxidation at which temperature, the SiCNWs‐SiC/PC SiC‐coating system has better anti‐oxidation property than the single‐layer PC SiC coating or the double‐layer CVD SiC/PC SiC coating without SiCNWs.

In order to improve the bonding property of joint between SiC modified carbon/carbon (C/C) composites and Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 (LAS) glass ceramics, SiC nanowires were attempted as the reinforcement materials in the interface region of SiC transition layer and Li2O–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (LMAS) gradient joining interlayer. The C/C–LAS joint with SiC nanowire-reinforced interface layer was prepared by a three-step technique of pack cementation, in situ reaction and hot-pressing. The microstructure and thermal shock resistance of the as-prepared joints were examined. The average shear strength of the joined samples with SiC nanowires increased from 24.9 MPa to 31.6 MPa after 40 thermal cycles between 1000 °C and room temperature, while that of the joined samples without SiC nanowires dropped from 21.4 MPa to 8.3 MPa. The increase of thermal shock resistance of the C/C–LAS joints was mainly attributed to the toughening mechanism of SiC nanowires by pullout, bridging and crack deflection.

An oxidation protective Si–SiC coating with randomly oriented SiC nanowires was prepared on the SiC-coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by a two-step technique. First, a porous network of SiC nanowires was produced using chemical vapor deposition. This material was subjected to pack cementation to infiltrate the porous layer with a mixture of Si and SiC. The nanowires in the coating could efficiently suppress the cracking of the coating by various toughening mechanisms including nanowire pullout, nanowire bridging, microcrack deflection and good interaction between nanowire/matrix interface. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and thermal shock showed that the coating had excellent oxidation protection for C/C composites between room temperature and 1500 °C. These results were confirmed by two additional oxidation experiments conducted at temperature of 900 and 1400 °C, which demonstrated that the coating could efficiently protect C/C composites from oxidation at 900 °C for more than 313 h or at 1400 °C for more than 112 h.

Three-dimensional carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites were fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) with polycarbosilane as the matrix precursor, SiC coating prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and ZrB2-SiC/SiC coating prepared by CVD with slurry painting were applied on C/SiC composites, respectively. The oxidation of three samples at 1500 °C was compared and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that the C/SiC without coating is distorted quickly. The mass loss of SiC coating coated sample is 4.6% after 2 h oxidation and the sample with ZrB2-SiC/SiC multilayer coating only has 0.4% mass loss even after oxidation. ZrB2-SiC/SiC multilayer coating can provide longtime protection for C/SiC composites. The mode of the fracture behavior of C/SiC composites was also changed. When with coating, the fracture mode of C/SiC composites became brittle. When after oxidation, the fracture mode of C/SiC composites without and with coating also became brittle.
