We introduce a Fabry-Perot cavity-length modulation technique for measuring the linewidth of a continuous wave (cw) laser. We calculate the peak intensity of a cw laser transmitted through a Fabry-Perot cavity as a function of mirror speed. By fitting the experimental data to the results of the calculation, we determine the linewidth of a frequency-stabilized cw laser. The linewidth of a cw ring dye laser measured in the 570-590-nm wavelength range is approximately 170 +/- 20 kHz. We also demonstrate the use of this technique to measure the reflectivity of a high-reflectance mirror.  相似文献

The paper deals with the fabrication of long-period gratings (LPG) in special optical fibers with an inverted parabolic-index profile of the cladding by periodically exposing the fibers to radiation of a high-power CO2 laser. Details on the fiber fabrication and preparation of LPGs with a period of about 1 mm in the fibers are presented. The fabricated LPGs were evaluated on the basis of their transmission spectra determined by measuring the output spectral density of the fiber with the LPGs. It is shown that the position of the band and its strength depend on the laser beam velocity, beam power and the interaction time of radiation with the fiber.  相似文献

Second-harmonic output at 4.6-5.5 mum of the order of 6 mW with a 0.12% external conversion efficiency has been obtained by pumping a AgGaSe(2) crystal with a low-power cw CO(2) laser. The surface damage threshold of AgGaSe(2) for cw radiation was found to be inside the limit of 33-45 kW/cm(2) in the 9.2-10.8-mum wavelength region. Another important limitation of the pump power connected with a thermal lensing effect in crystal was determined experimentally. A comparison was made of AgGaSe(2) and ZnGeP(2) crystals as materials suitable for the efficient generation of the second harmonic of cw CO(2) laser radiation.  相似文献

Water vapor absorption at 161 wavelengths, from 9.2 to 11.9 micron, of the 12C1602, 13C1602, and 14CI602 lasers was measured using a resonant optoacoustic spectrometer. Results were obtained at several precisely determined vapor concentrations in a flow of pure air at a total pressure of 1 atm. Since the same apparatus and methodology were used for all measurements, a reliable assessment can be made of the relative merits of the three lasers in applications such as atmospheric propagation and ranging.  相似文献

Results are given for the reconstruction, based on spectral distributions of the amplification factor of the active medium, of the progressive temperature and the upper laser level temperature in the working chamber of a 1.2-kV technological CO2 laser. Near-IR and visible room-temperature diode lasers in broadly tunable external-cavity configurations are becoming commercially available for gas-sensing applications. Near 1.57 mum, a coincidence of overtone and combination-band transitions from CO, CO(2), OH, and H(2)O is particularly interesting for combustion and combustor emissions monitoring. We report a step toward optoelectronic integration on low-temperature cofired ceramics substrates in the form of fiber alignment U-grooves. The precision of the CO2 laser machining of green state ceramic for this purpose is investigated. The groove-writing process with a speed of 1 mm/s was carried out in air at room temperature and ambient pressure. The process is to a large extent self-cleaning without any gas jet assist. By analysis of groove profiles after firing of a near-zero shrinkage green tape formulation, it is shown that the cutting accuracy is approximately 2 microm, which is at the fundamental limit set by the particle size (1-5 microm). We demonstrate low-loss butt coupling of <1 dB for single-mode fibers using the laser written U-grooves. The technique exhibits a potential for fabrication of low-cost fiber ribbon and fiber array connectors.  相似文献

We demonstrate stable operation of a diode-pumped cw Raman ring laser in diatomic hydrogen gas. Doppler-induced asymmetry between the the forward and the backward Raman gains leads to inherent unidirectional operation in the forward direction without intracavity optical elements. Use of the ring-cavity geometry dilutes the deleterious effects of thermal lensing and significantly reduces optical feedback to the pump laser.  相似文献

A high-resolution liquid-nitrogen-free mid-infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) system was used to perform real-time measurement of acetaldehyde concentrations in human exhaled breath following ingestion of an alcoholic beverage. Acetaldehyde absorption features were measured near 5.79 mum (1727 cm(-1)) using a IV-VI semiconductor laser, a 100 m long path optical gas cell, and second- harmonic detection coupled with wavelength modulation. Acetaldehyde levels were measured with a minimum detection limit of 80 ppb for 5 s integration time. The variations in exhaled acetaldehyde levels over time were analyzed prior to and following ingestion of two different amounts of white wine. A method to calibrate acetaldehyde measurements internally using water vapor absorption lines was investigated to eliminate the need for system calibration with gas standards. The potential of a TDLAS system to be used as a noninvasive clinical tool for measurements of large volatile compounds with possible applications in cancer detection is demonstrated.  相似文献

A 193-nm ArF excimer laser transmission was measured at subablative fluence through varying strength solutions of dissolved collagen, yielding an absorption cross section of 1.14 x 10(-17) cm2 for the peptide bond, which accounts for 96% of the total collagen attenuation that is based on additional transmission measurements through solutions of isolated constituent amino acids. The measured absorption cross sections, in combination with typical corneal tissue composition, yield a predicted corneal tissue absorption coefficient of 16,000 cm(-1). In addition, dry collagen films were prepared and ablation-rate data were recorded as a function of laser fluence. Ablation rates were modeled by use of a Beer-Lambert blow-off model, incorporating a measured ablation threshold and an absorption coefficient that are based on the measured collagen absorption cross section and the film bond density. The measured ablation rates and those predicted by the model were in very good agreement. The experiments suggest that collagen-based absorption coefficients are consistent with predicted corneal tissue ablation rates and previously observed dynamic changes in tissue properties under ablative conditions.  相似文献

A time-resolved photoacoustic technique has been applied to the study of dissolved and dispersed absorbers in aqueous systems. The temporal pressure profiles generated from colloidal graphite and glucose solutions were measured, and it was found that the amplitude of the photoacoustic signal of both the glucose and the colloidal graphite solutions increase linearly with concentration and that acoustic signal time delay yields the acoustic velocity. The logarithm of the photoacoustic signal amplitude changes linearly with the time delay, with a slope that is proportional to the product of the acoustic velocity and the optical absorption that can thus be determined.  相似文献

We report a new method to measure the CO(2)-laser-irradiation-induced refractive index modulation in the core of a single-mode optical fiber for the purpose of design and fabrication of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) without applying tension. Using an optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the laser-induced axial refractive index perturbation was measured. We found that the CO(2)-laser-irradiation-induced refractive index change in the fiber core had a negative value and that the magnitude was a sensitive function of the laser exposure time following almost a linear relation. Under the assumption of a Gaussian-shaped refractive index modulation profile and based on the first two terms of Fourier series approximation, the measured refractive index perturbations were used to simulate the LPFG transmission spectra. LPFGs with the same laser exposure parameters were fabricated without applying tension, and their spectra were compared with those obtained by simulations.  相似文献

We investigate light-induced heating by nonlinear absorption in LiNbO3-type crystals under continuous-wave (CW) laser irradiation. The heat source is one-photon absorption by long-lived excited states created by two-photon absorption. The accumulated effect of excited states, which act as light absorbers, is significant for a CW laser. Light-induced heating causes catastrophic CW laser breakdown in LiNbO3-type crystals in which the band-gap energy is less than twice the photon energy and in which long-lived excited states, like polarons, can exist. For LiNbO3, the threshold intensity for catastrophic breakdown is estimated to be in the order of MW/cm2.  相似文献

The measurement of the transmission coefficient of laser radiation in the atmosphere is considered. The measurement is performed by means of a triple prism situated at the opposite end of the route and that returns a portion of the radation in the opposite direction and a receiver that records a portion of the scattered radiation, integrated over the area of the detecting plate.
