Acute bronchial asthma associated with the administration of ophthalmic indomethacin

A life-threatening episode of bronchial asthma may follow treatment by ophthalmic indomethacin. This case report describes an elderly man who experienced a serious attack of bronchial asthma after receiving ophthalmic indomethacin solution for aphakic cystoid macular edema, following extracapsular cataract extraction.     

Surgical tactics in spontaneous pneumothorax

After 5 times repeated selection in vivo, combined with cloning technique in vitro and analysing of platelet aggregation activity, we had selected a highly lung metastatic salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma clone M-5clone24 (Acc-M). Compared with Acc-2, its metastatic rate was 96% vs. 18%; the weight of metastatic lung was 0.88 g vs. 0.31 g. The metastatic rate and the weight of metastatic lung positively correlated with platelet aggregation activity. The aggregation activity might be used as a useful parameter to assess Acc metastasis potential.     

Occupational bronchial asthma

Examination of 400 patients with occupational bronchial asthma helped to identify various clinical and pathogenetic variants of the disease in accordance with independent and combined occupational allergens and irritants. The authors evaluated diagnostic value of endonasal tests with occupational allergen, rhinocytologic tests and some specific allergologic blood tests in vitro.     

Functional state and reserve capacities of the adrenal cortex in euthyroid and thyrotoxic goiter

As a result of investigation and treatment of 5000 patients with disorders in menstrual function and endocrinous sterility sclerocystic ovaries were diagnosed in 1.8-2% (90 patients). In 6 of them ovarian changes were associated with cancer of the uterine body. In uterine body cancer and sclerocystic ovaries opsomenorrhea and menorrhagia, obesity were of great persistance, the duration of the disease being 12-20 years. Based on the conducted investigations it is considered rational to perform a wedge resection as early as possible, but not following many years of unsuccessful hormone therapy, and to study histologically endometrial curettage specimens. In recurrence of the disease and enlargement even of one ovary a repeat wedge ovariectomy should be performed.     

Long-term therapy of bronchial asthma with ingacort

To study the effectiveness of ACE-inhibitors in diabetic nephropathy (DN) 12 male and 16 female patients aged 13-21 years with DN having normal blood pressure (BP) were given ramipril (tritace) in a dose 2.5-5 mg/day in the course of 12-24 weeks. Efficacy and safety of the treatment were assessed by changes in albuminuria and proteinuria, BP. Reduction of albuminuria occurred in 19(79.1%) out of 24 patients with microalbuminuria, in 13(54.1%) of them urine excretion of albumin returned to normal levels. All the patients with proteinuria and macroalbuminuria benefited from ramipril therapy because their proteinuria diminished or even disappeared (2 cases). The persistence of the antiproteinuria effect on posttreatment week 12 was 66.6%. Ramipril effect on BP was minimal. It is inferred that ramipril is effective in the treatment of DN at the stage of microalbuminuria and proteinuria in patients with normal BP.     

Epithelial cells in bronchial asthma

The paper deals with the current data on the morphologic and functional damages to the epithelium in asthma. Structure of the normal airway epithelium is briefly described. Damage to the epithelium disrupts the barrier to the external environment, and may result in changes in mucous secretion, and mucociliary clearance; induce bronchoconstriction; promote chemotaxis of inflammatory cells. Epithelial cells can present antigens to T-lymphocytes. Epithelium is both target and effector in asthma. Hypothesis that eosinophils contribute to the damage of the epithelium gained increasing recognition.     

Surgical tactics in firearm wounds of abdomen

Determination of sound surgical tactics in all diversity of clinical manifestations of fire-arm injuries of the abdomen, especially in conditions mass evacuation of the wounded is one of the most complicated problems of war-field surgery. On the basis of the experience in treatment of 343 patients with fire-arm wounds of the abdomen the authors have developed an algorythm of surgical tactics in such kind of injuries which ensures adequate surgical aid to all wounded.
