Let (X, #) be an orthogonality space such that the lattice C(X, #) of closed subsets of (X, #) is orthomodular and let (, ) denote the free orthogonality monoid over (X, #). Let C0(, ) be the subset of C(, ), consisting of all closures of bounded orthogonal sets. We consider the parallel time complexity of logic programs without function symbols, called logical query programs, or Datalog programs. We give a PRAM algorithm for computing the minimum model of a logical query program, and show that for programs with the polynomial fringe property, this algorithm runs in time that is logarithmic in the input size, assuming that concurrent writes are allowed if they are consistent. As a result, the linear and piecewise linear classes of logic programs are inN C. Then we examine several nonlinear classes in which the program has a single recursive rule that is an elementary chain. We show that certain nonlinear programs are related to GSM mappings of a balanced parentheses language, and that this relationship implies the polynomial fringe property; hence such programs are inN C Finally, we describe an approach for demonstrating that certain logical query programs are log space complete forP, and apply it to both elementary single rule programs and nonelementary programs.Supported by NSF Grant IST-84-12791, a grant of IBM Corporation, and ONR contract N00014-85-C-0731.  相似文献

Our starting point is a definition of conditional event EH which differs from many seemingly similar ones adopted in the relevant literature since 1935, starting with de Finetti. In fact, if we do not assign the same third value u (undetermined) to all conditional events, but make it depend on EH, it turns out that this function t(EH) can be taken as a general conditional uncertainty measure, and we get (through a suitable – in a sense, compulsory – choice of the relevant operations among conditional events) the natural axioms for many different (besides probability) conditional measures.  相似文献

This paper reports on the status of The University of Texas at Arlington student effort to design, build and fly an Autonomous Aerial Vehicle. Both the 1991 entry into the First International Aerial Robotics Competition as well as refinements being made for 1992 are described. Significant technical highlights include a real-time vision system for target objective tracking, a real-time ultrasonic locator system for position sensing, a novel mechanism for gradually moving from human to computer control, and a hierarchical control structure implemented on a 32-bit microcontroller. Detailed discussion about the design of multivariable automatic controls for stability augmentation is included. Position and attitude control loops are optimized according to a combined 2 and criteria. We present a modification of a recently published procedure for recovering a desired open-loop transfer function shape within the framework of the mixed 2/ problem. This work has led to a new result that frees a design parameter related to imposing the constraint. The additional freedom can be used to improve upon the performance and robustness characteristics of the system.  相似文献

Given a finite setE R n, the problem is to find clusters (or subsets of similar points inE) and at the same time to find the most typical elements of this set. An original mathematical formulation is given to the problem. The proposed algorithm operates on groups of points, called samplings (samplings may be called multiple centers or cores); these samplings adapt and evolve into interesting clusters. Compared with other clustering algorithms, this algorithm requires less machine time and storage. We provide some propositions about nonprobabilistic convergence and a sufficient condition which ensures the decrease of the criterion. Some computational experiments are presented.  相似文献

Workflow Management Systems (WFMSs) are often used in context of B2B integration as a base technology to implement business-to-business (B2B) integration processes across enterprises. In this context the notion of distributed inter-organizational workflows is introduced to indicate the collaboration of enterprises on a process level. This notion requires a thorough examination presented in this article since WFMSs were not designed with inter-enterprise distribution as one of the design goals. At a closer look, the proposed use of WFMSs in context of B2B integration is often very naïve and inappropriate. Consequently it does not address the real requirements found in enterprises. Enterprises do not share common workflow definitions, let alone common workflow instance execution state and have no intent to do so due to competitive knowledge protection. Furthermore, trading partner specific business rules within enterprises are not accounted for leading to an unwanted explosion of workflow definitions. This article clarifies the notion of distributed inter-organizational workflows as well as private and public processes. Based on this definition, the appropriate use of WFMSs is shown in context of an overall B2B integration solution that allows enterprises to protect their competitive knowledge while participating in B2B integration.  相似文献

Games such as CHESS, GO and OTHELLO can be represented by minimax game trees. Among various search procedures to solve such game trees,- and SSS* are perhaps most well known. Although it is proved that SSS* explores only a subset of the nodes explored by-, - is commonly believed to be faster in real applications, since it requires very little memory space and hence its storage management cost is low. Contrary to this folklore, however, this paper reports, using the OTHELLO game as an example, that SSS* is much faster than-. It is also demonstrated that SSS* can be modified to make the required memory space controllable to some extent, while retaining the high efficiency of the original SSS*.This research was partially supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan, under a Scientific Grant-in-Aid.  相似文献

Summary This paper is devoted to developing and studying a precise notion of the encoding of a logical data structure in a physical storage structure, that is motivated by considerations of computational efficiency. The development builds upon the notion of an encoding of one graph in another. The cost of such an encoding is then defined so as to reflect the structural compatibility of the two graphs, the (externally specified) costs of implementing the host graph, and the (externally specified) set of intended usage patterns of the guest graph. The stability of the constructed framework is demonstrated in terms of a number of results; the faithfulness of the formalism is argued in terms of a number of examples from the literature; and the tractability of the model is hinted at by several results and by further references to the literature.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to test a distinct-window conferencing screen design as an electronic cue of social status differences in computer-mediated group decision-making. The screen design included one distinct window to symbolize high-status, and two nondistinct windows to symbolize low-status. The results indicated that the distinct-window screen design did produce status affects in groups of peers making decisions on judgmental problems. Randomly assigned occupants of the distinct window had greater influence on group decisions and member's attitudes than occupants of nondistinct windows.The authors would like to thank Shyam Kamadolli and Phaderm Nangsue, the programmers who developed the software used in this experiment. In this paper, a variotherm mold was designed and fabricated for the production of 316L stainless steel microstructures by micro metal injection molding (MIM). The variotherm mold incorporated a rapid heating/cooling system, vacuum unit, hot sprue and cavity pressure transducer. The design of the variotherm mold and the process cycle of MIM using the variotherm mold were described. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the molded microstructures produced using variotherm mold and conventional mold. The experiments showed that microstructures of higher aspect ratio such as 60 m × height 191 m and 40 m × height 174 m microstructures could be injection molded with complete filling and demolded successfully using the variotherm mold. Molded microstructures with dimensions of 60 m × height 191 m were successfully debound and sintered without visual defects.  相似文献

An important motivation for the object-oriented paradigm is to improve the changeability of the software, thereby reducing lifetime development costs. This paper describes the results of controlled experiments assessing the changeability of a given responsibility-driven (RD) design versus an alternative control-oriented mainframe (MF) design. According to Coad and Yourdon's OO design quality principles, the RD design represents a good design. The MF design represents a bad design. To investigate which of the designs have better changeability, we conducted two controlled experiments--a pilot experiment and a main experiment. In both experiments, the subjects were divided in two groups in which the individuals designed, coded and tested several identical changes on one of the two design alternatives.The results clearly indicate that the good RD design requires significantly more change effort for the given set of changes than the alternative bad MF design. This difference in change effort is primarily due to the difference in effort required to understand how to solve the change tasks. Consequently, reducing class-level coupling and increasing class cohesion may actually increase the cognitive complexity of a design. With regards to correctness and learning curve, we found no significant differences between the twodesigns. However, we found that structural attributes change less for the RD design than for the MF design. Thus, the RD design may be less prone to structural deterioration. A challenging issue raised in this paper is therefore the tradeoff between change effort and structural stability.  相似文献

Conclusions Gerhard's vision of domain-oriented design environments, initially seeded by a special startup effort but from then on living and growing through interaction in a work environment is a compelling one. His positioning of this idea as complementary to more traditional approaches like KBSA (which, by the way, are beginning to embrace many of the ideas he espouses) is correct. Furthermore, I agree with this vision and with much of his work in supporting human-centered design. However, as he himself admits, it remains to be tested in the real world and such tests will force the vision, the technology, and the way people work to evolve in mutually supportive way.  相似文献

In 1996, the author attended a seminar on ethics given by C. West Churchman at the University of California, Berkeley. During that year, the author also interviewed Churchman several times regarding the future direction of information sciences in general and the information systems research field in particular. This article is a compilation of the seminar and the interviews. It is set in the context of both Churchman's earlier and his current views of a global god, good, kindness, and caring. C. West Churchman holds that global ethics should lead to the study and design of information systems to solve large and difficult problems of the humankind such as poverty, crime and disease. His Global Ethical Management (GEM) of information sciences translates into abandoning the current goals and boundaries of the information sciences fields and changing what constitutes valid research to globally ethical endeavors.  相似文献

We study the question of which optimization problems can be optimally or approximately solved by greedy or greedy-like algorithms. For definiteness, we limit the present discussion to some well-studied scheduling problems although the underlying issues apply in a much more general setting. Of course, the main benefit of greedy algorithms lies in both their conceptual simplicity and their computational efficiency. Based on the experience from online competitive analysis, it seems plausible that we should be able to derive approximation bounds for greedy-like algorithms exploiting only the conceptual simplicity of these algorithms. To this end, we need (and will provide) a precise definition of what we mean by greedy and greedy-like.  相似文献

The Diplomat rapid-deployment speech-translation systemis intended to allow naï ve users to communicate across a languagebarrier, without strong domain restrictions, despite the error-pronenature of current speech and translation technologies. In addition,it should be deployable for new languages an order of magnitude morequickly than traditional technologies. Achieving this ambitious setof goals depends in large part on allowing the users to correct recognition and translation errors interactively. We present the Multi-Engine Machine Translation (MEMT) architecture, describing how it is well suited for such an application. We then discuss ourapproaches to rapid-deployment speech recognition and synthesis.Finally we describe our incorporation of interactive error correctionthroughout the system design. We have already developed workingbidirectional Croatian English and Spanish English systems, and have Haitian Creole English and Korean English versions under development.  相似文献

Pizer and Eberly introduced the core as the analogue of the medial axis for greyscale images. For two-dimensional images, it is obtained as the ridge of a medial function defined on 2 + 1-dimensional scale space. The medial function is defined using Gaussian blurring and measures the extent to which a point is in the center of the object measured at a scale. Numerical calculations indicate the core has properties quite different from the medial axis. In this paper we give the generic properties of ridges and cores for two-dimensional images and explain the discrepancy between core and medial axis properties. We place cores in a larger relative critical set structure, which coherently relates disjoint pieces of core. We also give the generic transitions which occur for sequences of images varying with a parameter such as time. The genericity implies the stability of the full structure in any compact viewing area of scale space under sufficiently small L2 perturbations of the image intensity function. We indicate consequences for finding cores and also for adding markings to completely determine the structure of the medial function.  相似文献

A geometrical stiffness matrix for a flexibly-connected member is developed for the analysis and design of semirigid framed structures when geometrical non-linearity (P — effects and other second-order effects) must be considered. A fixity factor defining the rigidity of a connection relative to the attached member is introduced to model different types of member connectivity. The sensitivities of the geometrical stiffness matrix with respect to the fixity factor are developed with a view to conducting structural optimization.
